BEST FLY SHOP IN TOWN! Being from Northern California, I love to fish. I struggled for a while to find a legitimate, knowledgeable fly shop here in San Diego. I am so glad I found this place! The people who work here are very inviting and very knowledgeable. We spent about 45 minutes - 1 hour in the shop talking bay and ocean fly fishing, what flies to use, and all their tips and tricks for fishing down here in San Diego. They recommended a few different flies, which we bought and used that day. And would you know my best friend and I both caught fish in the San Diego Bay. I can't think these guys enough! These guys are also great people, as they donate a lot of stuff to fly fishing organizations here in San Diego. I love this shop! Rick (the owner) is very friendly and helpful. He carries a full line of equipment and plenty of options. Rick would also be the first person I go to for information about fishing not just local spots, but also the sierras. They also have a ton of great fly tying supplies (the staff all know how to tie and can help you there) This is the kind of fly shop we want to keep around in San Diego, so make sure to patronize when considering buying. Best customer service you could ask for. Being a complete novice, I asked Rick every question I could think of for an hour and a half. He spent extra time going into detail explaining EVERYTHING to me. He even stayed open late for me because he just loves talking about fishing. Let me state up front- I know nothing about fly fishing. I wanted to get my brother a fly fishing set up for his birthday since we are going on a trip to the Bitterroot river in MT in Aug. Looked on Amazon and they had kits that ran the full range of $ and I had no idea what I was looking at. I drove all over the county checking out sporting goods stores. Nothing...but the last place I was in out of Lakeside told me I should look up Stroud's. He wasn't sure if they were still around. Thanks to the power of the almighty Yelp! There it was! I called them and asked how late they were open and hauled you-know-what out to Moreana Blvd. Walked in and immediately felt like I was stepping back in time, just a great small business vibe with a passion for what they do. The two guys behind the counter were fly fishing Jedi's- wise, very helpful and cracking wise. It just felt, well, unusually comfortable. That's when it sunk in that with all of today's technology and convenience, our community is losing places like this and the experience that makes buying a possible heirloom gift special and meaningful. I ended up with a great set up for my brother, some great tips and advice and a new found desire to take up fly fishing myself. I'm going back and buying a set up for myself too. I recently stumbled upon this shop after having a meeting at an architect's office a couple doors down. As I was just getting started on the fly fishing era in my life (I've been spinning reel fishing the Sierra for 25 years, but plan to fly fish until I can't walk anymore) it seemed like fate. Rick is an all around fantastic guy to strike up a conversation with and super knowledgeable in the fly fishing realm. He put up with my dumb questions like we'd known each other for a long time.
