My husband and I are happy that we used West Seattle Fence. We chose them based on a friend's recommendation and because of their positive Yelp reviews. We wanted to replace a small fence in our backyard. James, the owner, came to do the estimate. He measured our existing fence and talked to us about different options. James has tons of experience in the fencing industry and he is truly passionate about his work. The price estimate was extremely reasonable, especially compared to what other fencing companies are charging. You can also save some money by using a different quality of wood. We had to wait a few weeks before the work started because they were booked up. West Seattle Fence is a traditional mom-and-pop operation with a small crew. We didn't mind waiting because we prefer supporting local businesses. Once they started the job, it only took them two days to finish. They removed the old fence and chopped down a bunch of trees that were in the way. They took great care when they were working on our property and they did an excellent job of cleaning everything up afterwards. Our new fence looks (and smells) beautiful and feels solidly built. Patty, the other owner is also very nice. She handled most of the scheduling and communication. After the job was done, she followed up with us to make sure that everything was to our satisfaction, which we appreciated. We had our new fence completed in February 2020 and are beyond thrilled with the quality of work. James is a true craftsman, and he and his crew completed our rough cedar fence around the entire perimeter of our house within days. The only thing that held up the last piece of the project was that we had requested a wide sliding gate in the back that needed to be custom-built and installed during non-freezing temperatures. Patty and James have both been so kind throughout the whole process, including being patient with us for over three years when we first reached out to them but we kept postponing the project. They are in high demand and incredibly busy but we were committed to hiring them due to the quality of their work and the reasonable price. They are a very, very small team so if you contact them in the summer -- their busiest building season -- be prepared to consistently follow up to schedule your project or get an estimate, but it is worth it. I am so glad we chose this fence company. We liked them because they use posts on pipe in the ground rather than pressure treated wood that will eventually rot. They are a small business and very busy because of the quality of work that they do. They couldn't schedule us for a couple months but it was well worth the wait, that's for sure. Once they got started, it only took about a week to fence our large yard. Patty and James were upfront and honest throughout the whole process and they were very patient with all of my fence questions. James and Patty and their team were wonderful! We just purchased our first home and our yard had an old, dilapidated fence that our dog could jump over. James came out quickly to help us with a quote and some options that could resolve our problems of keeping our dog in our yard, but being able to keep visibility open in the front yard. We received a quote quickly from Patty and were able to get on WSF's calendar for the job to be completed in two months. During that time we were able to make updates to the plan and get an updated quote before the work began. Patty was always quick to respond and give accurate information. James and his team began work at the end of February. His team worked quickly to take down the old fence and set new posts. The next phase was amazing to see the fence be built. James checked in frequently to give some options with heights, stepping where the land slopes and customization. He even had suggestions to keep some posts longer to string lights over a patio in the future! He even added some extra wire guards to make sure our dog couldn't crawl into small spaces between our house and fence. Overall, the fence came out beautiful and it makes our house look much better! If there could be more stars, I'd give them! West Seattle Fence is awesome! James came out to visit with us in late June and spent a lot of time looking over the details of our yard and fence needs. While we waited for him to finish another job, he even came out to put up a couple sections of temporary fencing and a gate to keep our dogs contained. His quote was very fair, but really, when he was here every day on site during the construction of our fence, I quickly realized his quote was beyond fair! Our fence was quite intricate to put together came out beautifully. Every board was cut by hand and carefully installed. It looks great, is SOLID as a rock in terms of structure, and really goes nicely with the house. James was very helpful in many small design aspects too, using dutch double gates and such. We recently purchased a new home and the fence was in serious need of replacing. After months of deciding what style we liked best we called around to get quotes. We met with 3 different contractors and in the end we went with WSF. James came out and took the time to walk the yard with us. We discussed options, what we wanted to keep out/in the yard and the pros and cons of each piece. We're pretty picky, detailed people so we asked a ton of questions and at no time did it seem like he was annoyed or in a hurry to leave. In fact he was happy to answer all of our questions. Patty is behind the scenes, I call her the project manager :) She handles all of the communication, scheduling, invoicing and general wrangling of all the information. She was so accommodating to my busy work schedule and was so nice to let me email her back and forth with questions throughout the course of planning. She was great about our slight change of plans and put together a great quote with a couple of different options. This was incredibly helpful to us as we're on a tight budget and really needed to nail down what was really important and what wasn't. We booked the work a few months out; we called during busy season in July but knew we wouldn't be ready for a couple of months, we booked an October start date. I highly recommend doing the same.They're busy, and for good reason. The fence looks amazing!! We really couldn't be any more pleased with the work that the team at WSF did. They even took extra care with the posts (it was cold and the posts didn't all set correctly, so they had to reset a few so that cracks could be avoided). I really can't recommend the team enough. The work is incredible We weren't able to pay for the whole thing at once so they worked with us and did one half until we were able to pull together enough to get the rest of it done and we are SO HAPPY! They went the extra mile too in dealing with all sorts of unforeseen issues (a beehive, electrical cords, a collapsing retaining wall). And when we came home we were in awe of the special touches they did (including putting all of our plants back and cleaning up. The workmanship was amazing! Recently had a small fencing project done in my front yard. I contacted several businesses in regards to having the project done. WSF came as a referral from a friend who stated they do good work. After I received all my bids, WSF was among the cheapest and I was happy with the conversation with James about the planning for the fence. They were booked out for several months which was unfortunate but we did what we had to do. I was first provided with an estimate of second or third week of Feb. I will say that email communication could be slow at times. I had a couple of times to email twice, but after the 2nd email I got a response. I would say just keep after them and you will get a response. As for the install, they came for a few hours midweek in order to place the posts. They let them settle and dry for two days before installing the rest of the fence. The fence itself came out PERFECT. I love how they blended the colors of the cedar in the fence. I have a rental house in west seattle. I called west seattle fence based on their reviews. What I should have done is looked at all of their reviews. They seem to have a history of not showing up. The first thing the owner asked me when I called was "if I was going to waste their time to get bids from them and other companies?" It was so rude that I didn't know how to respond. She then proceeded to tell me how everyone is looking for a deal and she didn't have time for that. All I asked was if they were available for a job in the spring and if they were interested to take a look at my fence and give me a bid. I hadn't called anyone else yet, but with her attitude I wondered if I should. She then asked me what was my budget and made sure I knew that they were not cheap. Against all better judgment, we make an appointment and I drive all the way from the east side to meet her and her husband. Guess what? They didn't show and didn't pick up their phone. Want to waste your time......Call them. She was clear that she was in this to make money but that attitude is not going to make you successful as you lack customer service I'd you only care about how much money you can get out of your customers. read more

I called them to request an estimate on my fence repair. Instead of agreeing to come out, they asked me to email photos to them. I was disappointed, as with repairs, sometimes in a generalized photo, things appear okay that actually need to be repaired or replaced. But, I agreed to do what they requested. They gave me an aol.com address, which I thought strange, since no one I know uses AOL anymore. Sure enough, my email came back as UNDELIVERABLE, with the message "This user doesn't have an aol.com account". Wasting my time in that manner was not only "unprofessional", but down right rude. read more

I love supporting local businesses. I hate writing bad Yelp reviews. I also hate wasting my time and especially when someone knowingly wastes your precious time. I chose West Seattle fence because of their good yelp reviews. What I failed to do is look at the "reviews that are not currently recommended" because the two other 1 star reviews under there also had the same terrible experience I had. The good: -I got responses from Patty promptly. She chose her own date and time for availability to meet and discuss the project -20 minutes after our agreed meeting time and date, I had to call and email Patty for another 25 minutes before I got an email from her apologizing that they couldn't make it. (This is now almost an hr after the time we were suppose to meet). -Patty apologized and quickly promised to meet us on another date and time. Again, she chose the meeting date and time. The TERRIBLE: -Guess what? They didn't show up the 2nd time either. Both my husband and I called, emailed, called, texted, and emailed again. We've heard nothing since. No apology...nothing. West Seattle fence seems okay with not showing up and wasting your time. -on the phone, Patty did ask if we had talked to any other contractors. I told her that we had not, but we would be doing so because it seems like a smart consumer idea. Patty didn't seem very happy about that and told me that they have the best Yelp reviews. I did wonder why she cared if I would talk to other contractors. -I wish I hadn't given them a second chance. Both my husband and I had to leave our jobs early twice, waste both our times in traffic twice, waste well over an hour waiting for Patty and James, and worst of all, they are so unprofessional that they don't even apologize. Instead they never pick up the phone when we were calling or email to let us know they weren't coming. But we were also dumb enough to give them a 2nd chance. If you look closer at West Seattle Fence's reviews, you can see they have a pattern of treating other potential customers in the same manner. That is so unprofessional and unkind. If you have lots of extra time on your hands or you like being disrespected...then do business with West Seattle Fence. On a side note, both my husband and I work for large Seattle companies and many of our coworkers were waiting to see how our experience was. It obviously wasn't a good one. When a company can't return calls or show up without even the consideration to communicate that, then it's all just excuses, excuses. Notice that Patty takes a lot of time to respond to the poor reviews here and even tries to justify their lack of common courtesy by telling everyone how small, busy, and overworked they are. Never mind that they only work in West Seattle!! How hard is THAT to ask before telling people you're going to be somewhere only to leave them hanging? No, there is NO EXCUSE for any company to not communicate with the customer. Imagine what the situation will be when these "too busy" for courtesy people need to come out and correct something and they're not making any money at it. Let this be fair warning. We're in the process of re-designing our front yard and needed someone to install about 20 ft of fence. We read all the great reviews on Yelp about James' work so we thought we'd give him a try. We're so happy we did. Even though they were booked about 2 months out, James and his on the ball secretary Patty managed to sneak my lil fence project in at the tail end of one of his other jobs. On the day of the project, James showed up around 1:30 in the afternoon while I was at work and had the entire fence finished by the time I came home (that includes a couple trips to the lumber yard)!
