Close... but no cigar. Kind of run-down. Has dollar bills all over the walls and ceilings. Maybe they could use those for renovations? The restaurant takes only cash or check as of this writing. NO CREDIT CARDS. Was massively understaffed when we came for dinner....it was Friday night before New Years so should be no surprise they would need more wait staff. The waiter tried very hard and he warned us that he was taking orders at 12 tables, so we got our drink orders in quickly. He was right - Took 35 minutes for our dinner order to arrive. Drinks review only: Upon exploring the town of Cloudcroft (which took about five minutes...nice place), I decided to grab a brew or two before heading back to Alamo. Being that this is seemingly the only place in down, the decision wasn't hard. I bellied up to the bar, and the very friendly bartender was immediately there to help. I wanted something local, and got a Santa Fe IPA in can. I spoke with some of the others at the bar, which seemed split between regulars and visitors. Later, I switched to a Green Chile beer that was fantastic. During happy hour, each drink was something like $3 - excellent. Seems like the kind of place that would pour strong mixed drinks too, but can't confirm. The people next to me ordered food and it looked/smelled good, but I didn't have any food myself. read more

We have been coming to Western Bar for years. This is the first time I have been sadly disappointed. The loaded nachos had just a little meat, no beans, a sprinkle of cheese and lettuce and tomato, no guacamole. The chicken fingers were from frozen, tasteless. Good food. We tried here with some friends of ours (who have been afew times) for lunch. Was impressed. The portions were big. My wife tried the huevos rancheros and the plate was massive. I triedthe double meat burger. I loved it. it was so big and I was so full when I left I actually didnt eat dinner that night (which never happens). Lower your expectations put on a mask to stifle the smoke from the bar next door. Only place to eat when you are in the village. Ambiance is "divey charm" but that's about where the charm ends. The waitress did not know any of the beers (in her defense, she said it was her first day, but there was no beer list...), when a friend asked for a cider, she offered an O'Douls and argued that it wasn't non-alcoholic since "it's at the bar". We got one correct drink, one incorrect drink, and it took 20 minutes for the third drink to arrive. After 45 minutes, I asked when our appetizers were expected. When they finally emerged, 2 out of 3 were cold. My friend summed it up best when she said, "I mean, I think the food would have been good if it was warm." Went here for an early lunch. For seating, you can choose between the unremarkable restaurant area or the more rustic (and dark/dingy) bar area. My gf and I chose the latter because we found the hint of cigarette smoke more bearable than the overpowering aroma of greasy breakfast food that was present in the restaurant area. The food was OK. We shared a Mexican platter, which included a DELICIOUS chili relleno (I might go back sometime just for that), a dry-ish tamale, and a decent cheese enchilada and beef taco. Our waiter was very friendly and helpful. Overall, it's fairly decent/average. Given the limited choices available in Cloudcroft I'll probably be back at some point. read more

Stopped here for lunch en route from Carlsbad to Alamogordo. Lots of character. They had been slammed that day so service was a bit slow, but the waitress gave is fair warning when we were seated. I'd give this place zero stars if I could. TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. I have never been to a bar where I sat at the bar for over 20 minutes waiting on a single drink. The bartender passed us up several times and took other orders after acknowledging us. We were actually seated and she was taking orders of the guys walking up and ignoring us. They were not that busy and had 3 people working the bar. I don't know if it's because we obviously weren't local but screw this place. We just wanted a beer after hiking. The only way this place is in business is because it's the only bar in town. The owners need better bartenders, she was an ogre. read more

I have been coming to Cloudcroft for many years and the Western used to have great food. I live here now and have been seriously disappointed with the quality of their food. I don't know what happened, but in was really embarrassed in front of my friends when we went there. The food has gone seriously down hill. The staff is great, but i through my last take out meal away. Big Daddy's and Dusty Boots are heads and shoulders above this place now. It makes me sad, because I have eaten their for so long. Cloudcroft is a cute little mountain town. Stopped here after doing the Osha Trail down the hill. The ambiance is unimpressive, the waitresses are friendly. I got the Mexican combo, which included a Taco Bell beef taco, cheese enchilada, pork tamale, and chile relleno. The chile relleno was by far the best. I also got it with christmas sauce, both red and green. For beer they do have a selection from Santa Fe brewing. Other than that its shitty domestic draft. Overall worth trying if you're in the area. This used to be a great place to eat. I do not know what has happened. The service is very good, but the food we could not eat. The menu has changed and not for the better. My date ordered the enchiladas, rice and beans. The rice and beans were definitely right out of their cans and the enchiladas were tasteless and tough. He left 1/2 of the food on the plate. I ordered the Santa Fe Chicken dish and it also had the terrible rice and beans. The chicken breast was cooked on their grill with a tomato atop the breast and a ton of some white cheese. Tasteless even with the tomato. We will not be recommending this place to anybody and will not return. It's sad when new owners take over and change the menus when the old menus were money makers. I have been here to eat quite often in the last ten or so years. The last two times my husband and I went the food was not good. After the first time we thought it might have been a fluke. The next time my husband got the philly cheese steak sandwich and the meat was tough. I love okra and order it whenever I see it on the menu. The breading almost seemed stale and lacked flavor. If I could give zero stars I would. We waited an hour for our food. It was NOT edible in the slightest. The burger was totally charred, the cheese on my enchilada was not melted, the red sauce tasted like tomato sauce. Absolutely terrible & over priced. read more
