Very bad. I ordered the fish and chips, the Cod was heavily battered, extremely greasy and tough. The dish reminded me more of a giant hush puppy than fish and chips. I ordered queso, to go along with the chips at the table. The queso was barely melted Velvita cheese with mixed in hamburger meat. These two less than delectable dishes cost me 22$. Even If these were free I still would have been disappointed. One of my friends at the table had a burger and said it was delectable! That's the only reason I am giving two stars. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros with mixed green & red chile sauces with corn tortillas. I'm pretty sure the corn tortillas were store-bought but they were really good nonetheless. The portion was huge! Ordered the eggs over medium & they were perfectly cooked. Loved the sauces, not sure which one had a kick to it but it was the right level of spice for me. The beans & hash browns were ok but loved the eggs & sauces. The only way I think it could be improved is to put some avocado on it, add some onions to the hashbrowns, & if there were homemade corn tortillas, that would be great! I'd definitely order again. I almost didn't go in initially because walking past the building I could smell cigarette smoke, however, no one smoked in the restaurant & it didn't smell of smoke, & I would definitely know it! read more

Yikes, what a "meh" experience. We called ahead for a group of 12. It was ready to go but we had the rudest waitress at first, soon augmented with another more pleasant one (thankfully). After getting my drink order wrong, it was replaced with a snarky comment. The food was just okay and at least affordable. We had breakfast here yest am. Huge beautiful omelet full of ham and I had 6 perfectly crispy pieces of bacon! Wonderful! Then we came back through and had dinner after a chilly day of motorcycle riding. We we cold! When we came in Jill took us and put us at the table in the back by the little heater she has. We were so comfy & warm, which allowed us to enjoy our dinner better! So I ordered a cheeseburger, which was a perfect & generous patty cooked just right. We are here for lunch Friday after Thanksgiving. After over an hour wait to get our order of tacos and a cheeseburger we finally got our food: burger was burnt and no lettuce or tomato. A squeeze bag of mayonnaise was the only "garnish." Taco meat was disgusting and tasted old. Sent them back. Waitress didn't offer any alternative and didn't seem to care. Her excuse for the delay was they were busy. Will not come back. read more

This is a fun place to go for a Friday or Saturday night. In some ways it is like a pool hall with tons of locals and a jukebox machine where you are sure you will have a good time. The restaurant and bar are not classy but have fun parts like all the dollar bills on the ceiling. The food is really good too for the price. I enjoy their enchiladas. This is one of my favorite places in Cloudcroft. read more

As I write this, I'm still slightly indecisive regarding the #of stars I will give this place. Being in Cloudcroft for two nights this weekend for a running event, we visited this place twice. The first night, we arrived there somewhat exhausted from our 100 mile unplanned detour during our auto travel to the village. When we arrived to the Western, we found at least 5 open seats at the bar and had a seat, hoping to grab a couple beers and (eventually) dinner. We were greeted after a few minutes by a less-than-pleasant blond bartender with "I need your ID's". Cool! Being the age I am, I freaking love being carded! While we pulled out our ID, she disappeared to the other end of the bar, seemingly irretrievably lost. While the better half waited to order our beers, I shot over to the ATM in the corner (cash only here!). After I returned, we still were left sitting for over 10 min. Finally, a nicer lady with dark hair came around and asked if "she got your drinks". Score! She served us immediately, then continued to seemingly serve every other customer at the bar while the blond remained at the opposite end doing god-knows-what. We guessed we would have difficulty ordering another drink, let alone dinner, and we were right! The lady who had finally taken our order seemed to be the only one at the bar working, so she understandably didn't make it back often. I became pretty annoyed when the blond bartender finally came closer to us to help a younger make patron and I heard her comment on how nauseated she was after going out to smoke a cigarette. She proceeded to relate how she was taking medication to assist her I. Stopping smoking. Ah! We were ignored so she could smoke! Awesome! Anyway, after finally procuring a menu (which I had to ask the man next to me for because we were told they were " short on menus), we finally ordered. Got the fried okra appetizer which was delicious! Cobb salad 7/10, the boyfriend had a chef salad-"it was alright". Continued to have difficulty ordering drinks, left early after tipping our server well due to our appreciation for her hard work. Next day, we returned because we were tired and not wanting to dress up and the only other dinner place/bar in town seemed a little high class for our current mood. Still ignored by blond bartender-interestingly, the four male bikers at the bar had her full attention. We received relatively prompt attention from another server who was very sweet, again, until mid visit, she appeared to be the only one working. Got the very same thing due to being underwhelmed by menu choices. Still pretty decent food. Still hard to get refills on drinks because our server seemed to be serving the whole place. It's a good thing they are nearly the only place to eat dinner. If I had had more energy, I would have made an effort to put on nicer clothes and spring for the higher priced food at the place down the road. Reading the reviews of this place, I'm not the only one to complain about some degree of poor service. If I return to Cloudcroft, I think I will bring food to cook or something ready made. And lots of beer or wine! read more

Went there for lunch. Asked what was in a dish and the waitress went to ask the cook. She came back with "he has no idea as it's not made on the premises". We ended up ordering burgers. They were mediocre. The lettuce smelled of preservatives. The check came and we were going to pay by credit card. The waitress said they accept cash only and that they have an ATM machine. The waitress said it was posted in the window. The only thing posted is that there is an ATM. Having an ATM does not mean you do not take credit cards. We did have the cash; however customers should be made aware upfront. read more

A small, western-style bar with an attached restaurant. Restaurant section is small, yet family friendly. Service is brisk, food is good. Seems to be popular with locals and tourists. Located on Burro in the old-town section of Cloudcroft, it is close to shopping and the local hotel. Definitely worth a visit. read more

We just spend a long weekend in Cloudcroft and ate at the Western every night we were there. EXCELLENT FOOD! The quail is SO good and much less expensive than what you would pay for it in Central Texas (where I'm from). The mexican food is also great - wonderful red sauce! The huevos rancheros are the best I've ever had. The service was great, the people were friendly and best of all - there's a bar right next door!! We'll definitely be back. read more

First note: Bring cash or a check as they do not accept credit or debit cards. My husband and I are spending the summer in the Cloudcroft, NM area and have visited the Western Bar/Restaurant four times in the past two weeks ~ two times for breakfast on the restaurant side and two times for dinner/drinks on the bar side. Breakfast was very good, as was the service. I highly recommend the Chilaquiles with red sauce! For dinner/drinks, the restaurant turns into a completely different place. The service is HORRIBLE in the evenings on the bar side. We went in this past Sunday evening (6/16/13) and seated ourselves as no one was behind the bar nor was there a waitress on this side of the restaurant/bar. We waited more than ten minutes and I then went to the bar to order our drinks. Our drinks arrived within a few minutes and then the waitress/bartender completely ignored us for the next hour. We were not brought a menu and would have ordered food had anyone bothered to bring us a menu or even check on us. We also never received a check/ticket. We knew approximately the costs of our drinks so we left money and a tip (which was very generous on our part considering the lack of service) on the table and left. One more note ~ both bathrooms were disgusting. The trash cans were full and both smelled awful. There was trash (a couple of paper towels from the bathrooms and some toilet paper) on the floor in the hallway between the two bathrooms. The ladies room was just about out of toilet paper and I would have told somebody about this had anyone checked on us. There was also a surgical glove with something (Vaseline like substance) on it in the ladies room. Half of the glove was in the trash can and half of the glove was stuck to the wall. NOT appetizing, to say the least! In summary, the breakfast food and service is above average but the bar side of the establishment at night is HORRIFIC. We will eat breakfast there again at some point in the next three months but will never go there again in the evenings. read more

My wife, our grandchildren and three family friends had gone camping in the Cloudcroft area. They had endured a hail storm and rain in a rather rough camping experience but were in a great mood, this morning, when my wife decided to show the grandkids where she had spent much of her time growing up. They went into Cloudcroft and were very hungry so they stopped at the Western for breakfast. Upon being seated, they asked about breakfast and were informed that it was too late for breakfast so they would have to order lunch. That was fine with them, so they began looking at the menus and deciding what they wanted to order. One guest was indecisive, so he asked if he could order 1 chicken and two beef tacos. He was told "no" abruptly and abrasively. So, he simply ordered the beef tacos. After more consideration, he got up and asked the waitress to please change his order to the chicken tacos and he apologized for the change. This obviously angered the waitress, but she changed the order. When the food arrived at the table, the guest discovered that there was chili inside of the chicken tacos. Being unable to eat chili, due to stomach problems, they asked if they could simply return the item and have it removed from the check. It was then that the waitress went into the kitchen and a large, obese older man appeared from the kitchen and took a look at my wife and her party and said, "just get them out of here." My wife was stunned at this treatment and tried pulling the server to the side to apologize to her and explain that she just wanted her grandkids to experience where she grew up. At this time, the obese man returned and said, loudly, "Just pay your bill and leave. You are on drugs, or something. I don't know what, but pay your bill and leave." My wife was so stunned she dropped her wallet trying to get the money out to pay the bill and she had to get on her hands and knees to collect the contents of her wallet while receiving no assistance of any kind. All of this occurred in front of a restaurant full of patrons and my wife and grandkids were utterly mortified. They have never been so humiliated, ever! My wife is disabled, and to have her on her hands and knees in humiliation, is way beyond inhumane treatment. I called the Western upon hearing about the events of that visit. A lady named Brandi answered the phone and I asked her, "Is your owner in?" She replied that she does not have an owner but that the restaurant's owner had left for the day. I asked what his name was and I left my name and phone number. He certainly has not made any effort to contact me. I would welcome, a return call. Please avoid similar humiliation and avoid dining at The Western. The obese grey haired man is the owner, Allen Henry. Mr Henry's cowardly behavior is despicable. read more

This place is not the same with new owners. We had queso made with sweetened condensed milk one evening...gross! Supposedly an error on the part of a new prep cook. Today, we waited close to an hour and a half before our food arrived. One table just walked after also waiting an hour. Can't blame them. We were just told only one cook working (19 years old). The Western needs to invest in additional employees to meet customer needs. There are too many other options in town. We passed on waiting in a long line at Mad Jack's BBQ, where we would have gotten our food much sooner despite the lines. Once we were served, one hamburger arrived with an ice cold bun. When it was called to the server's attention, she asked if the guest wanted another one. To their credit they managed to get a warmed bun out in another 15 minutes. Server had several children running in and out of the kitchen. Will not be back until they fix the problems! read more
