I am extremely disappointed with this practice. After spending thousands of dollars over the past month alone caring for both of my dogs, from routine exams to urgent issues, they were unable to accommodate my dog for an acute, painful injury. I understand schedules get busy, but I expected more effort to accommodate an established patient with an urgent issue, especially given his recent history. I contacted their text service around 2 AM hoping to arrange a same-day appointment. Despite explaining that my dog was in pain and needed to be seen, the only appointment they offered was 3 days later. I ultimately contacted Bond Vet and was able to get an immediate appointment. They promptly evaluated him, prescribed the medication he needed, and were incredibly kind and understanding throughout the entire visit. I rarely write reviews, but this experience left me extremely upset, and I would not want another pet owner to find themselves in this position when their animal needs timely care. I switched veterinary practices that same day because this experience made it clear that I can no longer rely on this practice when one of my dogs has an urgent medical need. read more

I've had several pets treated here over the past year or so, and up until now, everything was fine. In July, I brought a newly adopted kitten in with a stool sample, after learning that his littermate had tested positive for hook worm. His test came back positive, so both of my cats had to be treated. I was skeptical that a single pill would treat the condition, but the vet assured me this was sufficient for the task. I paid the $400 bill, and I personally crushed up the pills, put them in my cats' food, watching to be certain that both cats consumed it. Fast forward two months - I'm out of town, my cat just threw up, and my petsitter found a hook worm in the vomit. I called Westside, and the receptionist insisted that while they SAW one my cats and did the testing (and, of course, they DID manage to collect the $400 in fees), they had never actually TREATED my cats. It seems that Dr. Friedman failed to make note of the medication she dispensed, so I was (rudely) told I'd have to book and pay for a new office exam as well as new testing. That's not happening. Instead, I will be taking all of my pets to a new clinic, one with a modicum of professionalism and accurate record keeping. I will also be writing reviews on Yelp and every other social media site I can find, because this is insane. So disappointing. And a lousy way to do business. read more

Doctor Karen Cantor is nothing short of magnificent and having had a decades-long relationship with her as the primary physician for all my animals, I can tell you that unequivocally there is no better veterinarian and staff to whom I would ever entrust the care of our pets. Murray has been there a good 27 years, offering an even greater sense of stability and security, addressing concerns arise expeditiously and always with the greatest compassion. He's a one-man "Mr. Fix-It" for any (out of the ordinary), administrative and clinical issues. No one just works there. Every employee is a true animal lover which we find to be a rarity in quite a number of practices. The nursing staff, for example, Dawn who has also been there for decades, are some of the most caring, compassionate and warm individuals we've ever met. We can go on for paragraphs about the whole clinic and each particular nuance of attentiveness from admissions to discharge or just general care and the gracious, welcoming and inviting nature of the clerical staff, such as Gina. Doctors and surgeons kasovsky, Cavanaugh, Napolitano, Bodkin, etc. are the finest first line of medical defense and treatment around. We must also mention a very special employee, Crystal, who has honestly been just a joy to have known over these many years. When legitimate concerns arise due to the illness of your pet, who have no voice of their own to ask for help, we always felt as though we were going to people known on a first name basis, dear old friends, to identify any illnesses, ailing your fur babies but also to offer great comfort in the knowledge that your loved one is in the very best of care. I took my dog here after moving, I needed to find a new vet. She was vomiting for 3 mornings and it got bad on the third day. The vets were kind and knowledgeable. However, they took her to the back and gave her several treatments without consulting me about ANY. I'm used to getting an itemized breakdown of what they are going to do beforehand, at any vet I've ever been to. They took her to the back and gave her several medications. One I would have objected towards. I wish I could get a refund. It's not only the amount on the bill, but knowing what your animal is about to have in their body. I am so thankful for Westside Veterinary Center. Very few places care for parakeets and the one or two Avian places are ridiculously expensive and expected money upfront before I even brought my beautiful budgie "Cookie" in for her first wellness check when I rescued her after she was abandoned in an apartment for 6 days with hardly any food or water. So grateful that Dr. Cantor was able to see her fairly quickly and didn't charge me a fortune to do so. She is very kind, caring and professional. The facility is clean and is always "buzzing" with dogs, cats, etc. and their owners. The staff is always kind and helpful on the phone and in person. I've had Cookie for a little over two years and am still learning how to care for her because I always had dogs in my life. Dr. Cantor has been extremely instrumental in helping me and somewhat educating me about caring for my parakeet. I would overwellmingly recommend this vet practice to any animal parent. I've been a client for three cats, including my present one. Being a group practice, Westside has the advantages of peer consultations with many specialties, extensive facilities and their staff is great, from reception, vet techs and nurses to the doctors. But one aspect of this practice enrages me. They send an email reminding you that your pet's rabies shot is due. You make an appointment a week and a half after the due date for a check-up. You attend the appointment. Three days later you get another email reminding you your pet's rabies shot is due! You review the invoice: sure enough, no shot was given. Why should I be responsible for reminding them to give a shot they reminded me was due?!? Inefficient record keeping at best, a flagrant bid to charge for an additional visit at worst. This is no slight inconvenience for us: a vet visit means a pre-surgical fasting regimen because my cat is so traumatized by travel he voids from every orifice unless he's already empty. Fun times. They have seen our beloved Shih Tzu through two bouts of an urgent, life-threatening, acute GI tract problem. They helped us find the right help five years ago, when she developed cancer in a hind leg. It had to be removed and they sent us to a great surgeon. She's now almost 13,, still enjoying life, and getting acupuncture at Westside regularly to help her with arthritis. They also offer 24 hour care. I took my 13 year old dog for the first time to this clinic so she can get acupuncture to relieve symptoms of her IVDD. I had a very positive experience from the time I walked through their door til I left. My dog GiGi was seen on time by Dr. Jones who explained everything and was gentle with my baby. I hesitate to write a negative review on Yelp, but I think my experience merits it. When I moved to the city last spring, I brought my dog in for nasal discomfort. We were told it was because he needed a tooth cleaning, which we did (under anesthesia, which is a lot for an older dog to go through). The vet told me he would be fine and there was no need to worry. His condition didn't improve, so the dr put him on allergy meds - no improvement - and then steroids. Still no improvement, so she told us we would have to do a rhinoscopy next. This all unfolded over the course of several months. When his condition rapidly deteriorated, she sent us to the Animal Medical Center, where we spent $1000 and were told that they could not do a rhinoscopy on site (???). I finally took him to a different vet, who immediately said it could not be allergy-related because the issue was in only one nostril. He swabbed the nostril to diagnose. (This new vet was also shocked to hear that Westside didn't examine his nose while they had the chance under anesthesia.) Later that week, we learned from the culture that it was a fungal infection. By then it had already spread to his brain, and he died. I know that older dogs are weaker and eventually do die, but this was such a wild case of misdiagnosis I'm not sure if his age matters. He was otherwise in good health. We spent months troubleshooting with this vet, spending tons of money on bringing him back to the office, when all he needed was a nose swab to diagnose. I am still heartbroken and always will be. read more

I've been taking my cats to Westside for more than 20 years--that's five Abyssinians, ranging in age from three months to more than 18 years old--and I highly recommend them. I've always found both the staff and the veterinarians to be compassionate and helpful, whether at a routine checkup or in an emergency. Appointments are reasonably easy to get, and though I usually see one vet in particular who has long experience with the breed, I know from experience that anyone I see there will provide excellent care. Yes, prices have risen over the years, but they have spiked everywhere. And at Westside I've felt that I've gotten everything I paid for, in a good way. I continue to be amazed at the high level of care, kindness, and competency displayed by all who work there. Birdie--so called because he likes to sit in the window and sing with the birds--spent his first year alone in the streets of South Carolina, before being rescued by Best Friends, where I found him and brought him home. He just turned three last month and shortly thereafter developed a problem with his digestive tract. Over a two-week period, he ate less and less until he stopped. Along the way he was throwing up and dry heaving regularly a couple of times a day. We feared that he had a blockage. Dr. Cantor, clinic director, stayed in close contact with me throughout his treatment. It was reassuring knowing I could always reach her by email or phone, and she was diligent in responding in a timely fashion. I'm the kind of person who asks a lot of questions. Dr. Cantor was always patient and thorough in making sure I was comfortable with and understood every step of the process. Westside Veterinary Center has in-house pharmacy, X-ray, surgery access, dental care, plus they offer boarding and a 24-hour operation. Whether it's annual vaccinations or wellness care, to immediate and life threatening concerns, WSVC can be trusted with your baby. If the whole story were told, the outcome would be that the writer was miffed that the WSVC staff always puts the animal first. No shortcuts. No masking the truth. Took my precious to this veterinary practice with what seemed like a skin rash. Waited for a long time then saw Dr. Jones for an exam that lasted all of 3 minutes. She prescribed some antibiotic and sent us on our way. She didn't want to run bloodwork until the rash cleared because if she had an infection levels could be temporarily off. Whenever I tried to call for follow ups front staff would take a message. Only once did Dr. Jones return my call. I came home to visit my family and brought my pet with me. Took her to a local vet in Tennessee. The vet was immediately concerned and ran some blood tests that indicated there was some internal infection or issue with her liver and the rash was secondary. We were immediately sent to an emergency vet and started treatment. By that time whatever infection was already running rampant. My dog died two days later. Had Westside Veterinary actually examined my pet and not brushed me off, my dog might still be alive today. Add on top of the curt staff -- the costs. If you're charging 120 for a basic visit which is more than other vets in Manhattan you should at least be taking the time to carefully examine the pets you see. This place is nothing more than a money mill. All they care about is billing. If they happen to figure out what wrong with your pet it's by coincidence not because they actually care. This vet once tried to charge me $80 to give my dog medications that I brought from home. read more

And they charge you for every little piece of paper , serious amounts ! ) . at the brilliant vet - they took her x ray without sedating her! My cat ' sonogram - also no sedating . Also . Amazing communication with receptionists - nurses - doctors at Brilliant vets. You can talk to doctors without feeling like you have three minutes and talk fast . We took my sick cat to Westside Vets last week. We were sure she was dying. The vet was very kind, examined the cat and didn't seem to agree. She said an Xray might be a good idea. We agreed. She said blood work might be a good idea, too. We agreed. The diagnosis was constipation; the remedy Miralax; no surgery was involved'; no follow-up called for. The cost for the visit $1,200. I objected on the grounds that we had been given no indication of the expensiveness of X-rays and blood work, and that, given the diagnosis the veterinarian might have been expected by virtue of experience to suggest Miralax before suggesting the more costly route. I cannot shake the feeling that our anxiety over the cat was taken advantage of. To be fair the Xrays which cost $400 - were taken off the bill by the vet. The blood work remained as the manager explained that they were a full hospital facility and as such had to run a very expensive operation. My question to him was why should I be expected to contribute to their full hospital operation. I will not go back there, and I will advise anyone who asks me accordingly. read more

Not a great experience at this vet--the appointment was very rushed and my pet's sensitive test results were delivered in a crowded waiting room among lots of other people and pets. The vet was clearly overbooked and rushing between appointments. After seeing the vet, I waited at least 30 minutes in the waiting room for the vet tech to bring out my pet's medication which they kept forgetting; eventually, the receptionist told me I needed to move spots to sit right outside the vet tech's office or else "they would never remember to give it to me," which I thought was strange as it's their job to give me the medication I had already paid for. I do believe Dr. Friedman is very knowledgeable and caring but is not able to give clients the personal attention and care they need due to the volume of patients. read more

Brought 2 of my senior dogs for their first appointment at this clinic today and it went fantastic. We saw Dr. Friedman for a general check up and vaccines. She was amazing - super friendly, knowledgeable, personable, and non judge mental. Would definitely recommend her again and will be bringing our other pets to see her as well. All of the staff we interacted with were professional and friendly, great vibes. I think they are on par with other clinics in terms of cost. The only thing to be aware of (especially if you have a reactive pet) is the layout of the lobby is small and it got very crowded when we were waiting to check out. There were 6 dogs including my own plus parents in a tight space which could be a recipe for disaster. One of my dogs can be a bit of a butthead towards large male dogs so it was a little hectic trying to hear the receptionist when checking out. Overall great experience and they will definitely be our new vet! read more

I came to Westside without an appointment as my dog who is on a low fat diet due to pancreatitis got into some high fat cheese with onions and was really sick and passing blood. Even though they were fully booked up, Dr Friedman saw us immediately and treated my dog with great knowledge and care. she also followed up the next day to see how she was doing. Choosing a vet is easy when your pets are young and healthy, it's more important as they become ill and near the end of their life. Clearly Westside Vet is the right choice. I've been a client of Westside Vet for 11 years. First with my chocolate lab, Ella. Dr Lewis took excellent care of her until the very end with the utmost knowledge, kindness and compassion. I now have two rescue dogs (Gerta and Oliver) and a cat (Finnegan). We've been lucky but a few years ago my terrier-mix, Gerta, was diagnosed with a heart murmur which requires specials meds and extra care. During the pandemic, she got really sick and I was scared. I waited too long to bring her in as I knew I wasn't allowed to come in with her. By the time I brought her in she was near death and diagnosed with renal failure, dehydration and anemia. Dr Rutherford allowed me to come in and we had the end of life conversation but she saw a small glimmer of hope and suggested they could keep her overnight for fluids, antibiotics and 24-hour care. The nurses, Kim and Amanda in particular, took special care and Amanda even sent me a video so I could see her and know she was okay. When they released her 2 days later, I was told she may have weeks or months. She was weak but she was home and I was tasked with a new medicine regime and instructed how to give her daily fluids. It was complicated, so complicated I had to make a check list. I had Qs and was on the phone with them for clarification on a regular basis. We made it thru one week, we marked one month and now we've passed the 3 month mark. It hasn't always been easy but as single dog parent - especially during a pandemic - when my neighbors are gone and so many friends have moved, Westside Vet has been my only reliable support. I am 100% confident when I say Gerta would not still be with me without their excellent and loving care. Special thanks to Dr Rutherford, Rebecca, Amanda, Kim, the front desk staff and Murray. When they say it takes a village, they are my village and there are no words to truly express my gratitude for this gift of time. And of course Gerta should get some credit as well. It has been almost a year since my beloved budgie died. On 12/20/23 I took my budgie to Dr Karen Cantor since he seemed unwell. Never in my life did I think that this appointment was going to go as it did. Dr Cantor said he had a crop infection and tried to culture his crop. The technician held my budgie in her hands while Dr Cantor tried to stick the culture probe down his throat into the crop. There was a struggle while my budgie resisted. As soon as it went in, my budgie projectile vomited the fluid in the crop and died. I saw the moment the life went out of him when his head fell back and eyes closed. It was so horrible. I can still see it in my head vividly and can't stop crying when I think of it. I miss him so much and I'm so sorry that I was not able to keep him safe, and that he had to pass in such a way. His name was Happy. I had him since he was a baby, and he lived to be 8 years old and was the best budgie I ever had. While I understand they needed to figure out if the infection was bacterial or fungal, if he was as unwell as they said he was, I wish they had given him one or both the treatments without culturing. I wish I was more informed of the process, how invasive it could be, and the possibility that budgie could be harmed in the office. I wish I told them to be more gentle with him. I trusted them. It was stressful and overall a horrible experience. I am still so upset that I took him there a year later. Dr. Cantor and the technician rushed out of the exam room with him. I was left in the exam room shocked at what I saw and kept telling my husband that I think Happy died. He didn't believe it. He thought they were going to bring him back. When Dr. Cantor came back, there was minimal explanation to the point that my husband had to clarify and ask if Happy was dead. The technician never came back. I felt no one looked sorry or showed compassion or empathy that day as I left. I ended up leaving the office with his dead body. Despite him being sick, I can't help feel that she/they killed my bird, and that more could have been done to prevent this. I feel he was mishandled and died in such an unnecessary way. I wish I did not put him through this by taking him there. I am not going to tell you where to take your budgie. I am just sharing my experience as I grieve so other budgie owners can be informed. I hope no one has to go through what my budgie and I went through. read more

Dr Friedman is a gift from Heaven. My dog and cat have been seeing her several years. She picked up on my dogs lung cancer extremely early and saved his life. We were referred to specialists who promptly removed the cancer. She is the absolute best. Extremely professional and extremely kind human being. Her support staff is equally fantastic and I paid some of them to walk the dog when I was out of town. They are all fantastic. We found this vet practice to be uncaring, greedy, dog-centric, with a rude receptionist. We took our cat there in May 2020 because he was vomiting his food on a daily basis. After examining him the vet determined he was healthy and the vomiting was probably an allergic reaction to the dry food we used. She recommended we switch to a HSD Prescription dry food but neglected to provide us with a script, so we had to follow-up with them. The vet wrote a prescription for DOG food instead of cat food but luckily HSD sent us the correct cat food when I called them to explain the vet's error. The HSD dry food is great and our cat stopped vomiting, so we have continued to order this food from HSD. Today we received an email from HSD asking for a new prescription before they ship any more food. I called West Side Vet and the receptionist informed me that the vet said she would not renew the 'prescription' until we brought our "dog" back in for another visit. I explained that our CAT is healthy and does not need to be seen by a vet immediately. Our dry food will run out in a week and while they call it 'prescribed' the food contains no actual medications. I asked if they could write a time limited 'prescription', so that we could get our June delivery of food, with plan to schedule our cat for their annual visit later in June. The receptionist reiterated no and refused to check back with the vet. We will be taking our cat in for an annual physical this summer but not to West Side Vet! read more

The doctors and nurses are very kind and nice! However the front desk staff are not very friendly. Quite dismissive and do not seem at all interested in being there or helping you. If you can put up with that though your pet will have great care from the doctors. read more

Such wonderful people and such great care! Both Murray the office manager and Dr. Friedman went out of their way to help me when I brought in a friend's cat. They really cared about getting him the treatment he needed. The staff at the front desk was also very kind and helpful. Thank you all! read more
