This is now the 3rd or 4th time I've used Chris over the past 12 years. 2nd review. I can not emphasize enough how hard-working and honest he is. He is a one-man shop these days, so super busy... but made time to stop by and replace dimmer switches and install a Nest. Not complex electrical work, but he got the job done efficiently amongst the painters who were also at the house.He's very detail oriented. FWIW, Chris spent many of the last few years doing contract work for big commercial builders and the county. Luckily, he is back doing more residential jobs. Chris expertly and meticulously corrected the work of another solar contractor. The original solar contractor made errors which caused the city inspector to fail the inspection. I will keep this review focused on the positive experience we had with Chris, which contrasted with the contractor who caused the errors. I contacted Chris, he came out the next day, Friday, to inspect the work, he carefully reviewed the notes left by the inspector. The following Tuesday and Wednesday he did the work to correct the errors. One of the inspector corrections required that Chris reconfigure the inventor box, which included some changes within the walls, Chris took pictures prior to patching the wall and provided the pics to the inspector. Chris met with the city inspector for the second inspection, we passed the second inspection. We have worked with many contractors over the years, including a complete remodel of our home. I'll try and curb my usually very sarcastic and sardonic self in this review because the gentleman that showed up at the door today is a truly upstanding person and deserves a positive review. I will admit that I have very little experience with electricians, but I can spot a genuine person and an honest person when I meet one. He was truthful about what should and shouldn't be done and even about what I could do myself. What kind of electrician or mechanic or plumber wouldn't jump at the chance to create more paid work for himself that really doesn't require a professional??? An HONEST one. Because of the nature of my electrical problem, there was little he could do this time other than advise replacing the lighting itself since the transformer was dead. He also gave me tips on which ones I should buy and seemed knowledgeable about the why as well as the what, which is just as important. Our almost new electric oven recently quit working, and the appliance warranty technician diagnosed it to be due to an electrical problem. I called a local electrician whom I found on a yellow page. He said that we would need to replace outside panel and run a new wire to the kitchen for the grand total of $4,000! Seeking a second opinion, I was referred to Chris by a client of mine. After inspecting the situation and our premise thoroughly, he gave us an estimate of $1,200 for an alternate repair plan - reconnecting to the wire that used to be connected to our old oven, but was now behind a new pantry. It required cutting the sheet rock, moving the refrigerator - in other words, lots of labor on his part, but $2,800 less than the other guy. He worked over 7 hours that day very hard, and when the job was completed beautifully, he charged us $300 less because he said that job was easier than expected. Talk about honesty and professionalism! Many days later, I discovered that he also installed a new outdoor outlet on the wall facing the kitchen at no additional charge. It was a pleasant surprise gift. My wife was home that day, and I was at work whole day, so I never met Chris in person. My wife was thoroughly impressed with his courteous, pleasant personality. Chris was prompt, skilled, knowledgeable, and very easy to work with. We called Westsun Electric (along with a bunch of other electricians) on a Friday because another electrician canceled our appointment and couldn't come again for a week. Chris was able to make it to our place the next morning to replace a wall sconce in our bathroom and repair a light in a bedroom ceiling fan. It was a lifesaver because we were expecting overnight guests very soon. During the job, he gave us great advice about other work we could do in our home, taking into account function, aesthetics, and cost. This is my first experience with an Electrician and it was a very positive one. Chris came in and did a great job. On the 1st visit, he fixed my 2 pendant lights with the parts that were available. Unfortunately, 1 of the lights failed to turn on a few hours later after Chris left. I called Chris and he immediately made himself available within a day. When he returned, he came back with new parts he went to pick up from his supplier, and fixed the light again with no additional labor charge. His rates are very competitive and I can tell he prides himself in his work. I felt he was also a honest and genuine person, someone who does his job the right way. Called in for some emergency per outage at my home. He came right away and debugged very systematically but also took time to explain everything he was doing. As an engineer I like to understand why things work and why things break and he was very patient and explained carefully. We've used Chris twice. First time we had Chris replace an old fuse box with a circuit breaker box, reroute/rewire some old wiring going to a separate cottage, and add some exterior lights on motion sensors. I had a new commercial space which needed more power installed including some 240 V / high current circuits. I feared it would be very expensive. I had Chris come out based on the positive reviews and his fast availability, and told him I was looking to get the job done inexpensively. Chris was able to devise a plan to reuse/convert unused portions of the existing electrical electrical system and gave a very reasonable quote to get the job done which was great for our start-up company. He was extremely knowledgeable and did everything according to code. I think the job took a little longer than he anticipated due to reasons that were not his fault (a fluorescent ballast he bought to fix a light turned out to be bad and he had to go back to get another one and come back another day), but he still charged the same quoted cost. Overall a great experience and will use him for future electrical work. read more

We are so lucky to find chris as our electrician for our kitchen remodel. He is very professional, well skilled, easy to communicate with, most importantly he is a extremely tidy and well organised person, my husband comments on his sub-pannel work is like a art!! I am a sceptical person and i had lots of troubles with contractors. but for Chirs, there is absolutely nothing I can criticize for at all. His work is just Fantastic!! Oh, one more thing, I know there are lots of contractors out there, doing multiple jobs at the same time, sometimes no show or leave you unfinished work for days. But this is not the case with Chris at all. From the day one he starts the job, he show up every morning at 9, hard working whole day until the job finish. I've now hired about 3 different electricians to work on our place - a 100 year old place in SF that needs repairs. A few months ago, I was referred to Westsun Electric. Its owner run (Chris Choy), and he's the one doing the work. I had him fix a few non-working outlets in our kitchen, rewire some lighting switches, and install new outlets. Most recently, Chris worked on totally upgrading our system to meet current standards. This involved running a new 70 amp power supply to our in-law unit. He explained everything along the way, and insured that our system overall was good. His prices were very reasonable - for the first job, I got 3 quotes and Westsun beat all of the other. One last note on the non-working outlets that Chris fixed in our kitchen. They were actually not working when we bought the home. The house was previously owned by an electrician; he was unable to fix them before selling the home, and Chris was able to isolate the issue and get it resolved. It turned out to be a lose wire in a totally different room. Also, he does Solar installations. Haven't used him for this, next on the list (in a few years). read more

(August 2009) We needed some ceiling lights installed in our living room, which involved "can" lighting and new light switches. As a bonus, Chris added an outlet above our fire place for our tv/cable. Oh, AND Chris changed out a light fixture for us, over our kitchen table for free!! He even changed out the plates on our outlets so they would all match the new dimmer switch plates. He is thorough to say the least. I was about to get ripped off by another company listed by Angies List who quoted $3680.00 for the job that has costed me minimum with WestSun, paid only $130.00. Other guys wanted to replace my enter service panel. Chris has inspected my service panel and said, nothing wrong with it and re-wired my electrical outlet and charged me minimum. Everything is working as expected and no more problems with my electrical outlet or the circuit breakers. I wouldn't call anyone other than WestSun for all my future electrical problems. He doesn't repair kitchen appliances, only Electrical work and Solar! Great guy and God bless him for his honesty! Received a referral for Chris from a co-worker. I called Chris on 6/1/15 to come out and provide electrical work to my outside lighting. He provided an estimate and approximately 2-3 hours worth of work and was scheduled to come out 6/8/15. After confirming the day before and the morning of the visit, he messaged saying he would be late (4:30pm instead of 4pm). I mentioned that I have another appointment at 6pm. At that point, we were messaging and he said that it was not enough time for him to do the work. He proceeded to send me unpleasant messages to the effect of only coming out to the site once and does not come back again because he is so busy. I said that he could come and do what he can and I can pay him for what was done; we can always do another job at another time. Chris provide NO response after that last mesage. He may possibly provide quality work but I, personally, WILL NOT recommend this electrician to anyone as his customer service skills are not professional. I will continue to spread the word to others I know who are in need of electricians and put him at the top of the list as NOT to call. Currently looking for another electrician. read more

I just want to say that I have never been more pleased with this kind of service. I made the arrangements to have Chris come to our house to do some electrical work that he originally said may be quite expensive depending on how we had the electrical set up already. To be honest, I don't know enough about electrical stuff to have known the difference. I was not able to be there when he came to do the work, just my wife. He was even more polite and wonderful to her than I expected. He even spent time playing with our dogs in the backyard when he was done - so funny. He could have charged us the worst case scenario cost and I wouldn't have known any different. But he didn't and it ended up being LESS than his original low end quote. He was fast, very polite and professional and explained EVERYTHING to my wife about what he did and why. I almost wish I had more work for him to do just to have the pleasure of having him DO the work. HIGHLY recommended. UPDATE: It turns out that we had Chris install the wrong 220 outlet (our mistake, not his). Chris was fantastic!!! I called a lot of other "Tesla recommended" electricians and got the stiff arm or super pricey quotes. However, not only was he amazingly responsive but very knowledgeable. I recently purchased a Tesla 75D and needed a 30a/240v outlet installed to use a NEMA-1450 charging adapter. I wanted to install the 50a EV station but it would have been 3x more expensive. Chris explained all of my options and walked me through the electrical process for my older home as well as the pro's/con's of each option. Being a newer owner, shared his opinions as to why trickle charging was better for the long term battery life then allowed me to select the most practical solution. Now I have a charging outlet that works great and can really find out if a 50a charger is what I need in the future. He had great energy, very social and paid attention to details. We had him do a bunch of work in our house, and we were very impressed with the (a) quality of his work, (b) his desire to not waste our money and do only the things that are important and (c) his gentle and kind nature. First is regarding his quality of work. We recently purchased a house where we had to upgrade the electrical system as the previous owners had done a poor quality job. Chris gave us a reasonable quote for the work and explained the rationale for them (e.g., labor costs, equipment costs). Further, since I am an engineer by training, Chris explained some of the technical aspects to me (e.g., 150 Amp system has 25 Amp safety factor) which made me comfortable with his approach. Once we decided to go with Chris, he started the work within 3 days and did an excellent job in the time frame that he had specified. The pride that Chris takes in his work is reflected in the care and attention to detail in his work. Second is regarding his desire to do what is important for us. After Chris did the first job, we gave him a copy of the pre-purchase inspection report that listed lots of electrical problems that "needed" to be fixed. Chris read the report and explained to us that many of these upgrades were not necessary (e.g., some of the earlier work was done well but with older guidelines, and so while upgrading would make them more compliant with recent regulations, they would not make the house safer). Chris also suggested some money saving solutions instead of more expensive repairs (e.g., using surge protectors with ground, instead of changing the wiring in the house). There were of course a few things that needed to be done to make the house safe (e.g., wiring in the attic) for which Chris did a terrific job. What impressed me about this interaction that Chris turned down opportunities to do more work, and instead focused on what was important for us. Finally, Chris has a kind and gentle personality which will be obvious when you meet him. An example of his nature is the interaction he had with my 3-year old son who is rather inquisitive and asked Chris many questions. Chris sat down on the ground so that he could be at the same eye-level as my son, and patiently explained things to him. Chris then took my son by hand to his truck, and showed him around. Needless to say, my son was thrilled by this!! In summary, we think that Chris is a terrific electrician and person. He's very knowledgeable and cares about getting it right - he even came out on a Sunday and worked for several hours to resolve an issue with a 3-way Z-wave switch which wasn't functioning properly. This is the second visit Chris Choy has made to our home for electrical work. He came out the same day I called and fixed the problem which was flickering lights. Other contractors gave me response times of 5+ days. Three weeks ago I called Chris to relocate some recessed lighting in our living room as we had moved the furniture around the lighting was not lighting where it should. We also wanted to Chris to replace the under cabinet lighting in our kitchen as the exitsing lights were not providing adaquate light. Chris showed up on time, installed the recessing lighting and updated the lighting under the kitchen cabinets . His choice of fixtures was perfect and it sure brightened up the kitchen. I need an electrician for a kitchen remodel after realizing that the job was too big for our general contractor to handle. Not knowing a good one locally, I turned to Yelp, and was extremely fortunate to find Chris at Westsun Electric & Solar! He literally saved the day for us (and may have prevented a future disaster!) as he discovered that prior electrical work had been dangerously and not to code (despite being permitted work for a small home addition that we had done some 6 years earlier - the inspector had obviously not seen inside our panel despite signing off on the work!). Before you think that perhaps Chris was just looking to make a few more $ off of us read on. When I called Chris our contractor had completed demolition of the old kitchen (our home in Los Altos was built in 1962) and realized that all the electrical in the kitchen needed to be brought up to code. I called Chris after reading his Yelp reviews and fortunately he was available due to luck to start our job right away -- he showed up the next morning ready to go. He initially gave us a very reasonable quote to rough in the wiring and complete installation the outlets/switches as well as install under cabinet lighting for which he proposed high efficiency LED lights. He was helpful with suggestions on updating our ceiling lighting as well, though not pushy in trying to up-sell us (we initially declined to upgrade the ceiling fixtures). He worked efficiently and diligently and from the get go made an excellent impression. On the second day our general contractor called us and said we had a problem -- Chris was so concerned when he looked in our sub-panel that he said he could not proceed without some significant additional work! I came home to look and Chris had discovered that the wiring in the sub-panel was so poorly done that the grounding was marginal at best. On top of that the prior contractors had used an illegal (outdoor) panel and cut a rough notch in it with a sawzal to run wires in from the top -- these roughly cut metal edges were rubbing against many of the wires going in and out of the sub-panel! It was visible even to a layman (I am trained as an electrical engineer and am one for Apple so have more than a passing familiarity with wiring requirements) that this had been done so poorly as to constitute a very real safety risk. Chris proceeded to give us a very fair estimate for the additional work (which including replacing the illegal panel, fixing the supply that was incorrectly wired through a junction box in the attic) and proceeded to get the basic rewiring done in a day so we were never without power for long. The job ended up being quite complex and the fact that the house was built in 1962 (and had been updated several times) meant that the wiring was a true maze of intertwined and tapped off circuits that needed to be figured out and often cleaned up. Through all this Chris never complained, asked for more money (beyond the obvious second quote for the sub-panel replacement and a subsequent quote to meet a requirement by the City to upgrade the smoke sectors, home ground, and kitchen lighting), and was always friendly, took every step in stride, and did extremely diligent work -- I wish I could include a picture of the new sub-panel wiring which was day vs night better than the old fire-trap he ripped out. When the final bill came due I was extremely impressed that Chris had kept exactly to his estimates, which by the way for all the work (complete rewire of a medium large size kitchen to current code and installation of all new outlets/switches, sub-pannel replacement+junction box in attic rewiring, installation of high efficiency LED lights in kitchen and under cabinets, new hardwired smoke detectors for a 4 bedroom house, grounding of exterior sub-panel, moving ceiling lights, and sundry troubleshooting came to an EXTREMELY reasonable $3400. Despite all the extra work required due to the old dangerous wiring he found it was still significantly less than an estimate for the electrical work from a big box store. I rarely take the time to write Yelp! reviews let alone lengthy ones but in the case of Chris I feel that he needs to be rewarded with a positive review. To be 100% fair and if there is one thing I could criticize through the entire process it would be that occasionally Chris can be hard to reach via phone/text - understandable as he is undoubtedly treating all his customers the way he treated us and does not want too many interruptions. However he always comes through in due time and this in no way detracts from the fact that I would ABSOLUTELY recommend Chris to anyone looking for an honest, fair, helpful and all around great person as well as great electrician. Thank you Chris for saving our day (and I mean that quite literally in that especially with a minor earthquake/etc causing some shifting, we might very well have had an electrical fire...) read more

I hired Mr. Choy to upgrade a '50s-era house from a fuse to a circuit breaker system and was pleasantly surprised by the efficiency he demonstrated in doing the task. He completed the work in one day with only an hour-long break for lunch, and with just a minimal amount of time when the power was disrupted. I had three contractors bid on the project and Mr. Choy's was by far the least expensive. But cost was only one of the factors in my final decision. As the person newly responsible for the upkeep of two homes (owned by my siblings), I wanted to find an experienced electrician on whom I could depend to handle any future projects or problems.
