I had a friend tell me that Whataburger is just like In N Out. Well, I know In N Out, and you, sir, are not In N Out. Heading south from Albuquerque, trying to make a break for interstate 10, after the 40 got shut down due to snow and ice, our trip back to Los Angeles was rudely interrupted by a stop at this restaurant. Based on the number of locations, it seems there is a market for people enjoy beef patties reminiscent of those delightful ones they used to serve in your school cafeteria. We can almost taste the newspaper and gym mats, ground into the meat. What they lacked in flavor, they more than made up for with heartburn and Weird burps clear on through to Phoenix. All the fountain drinks had some weird taste... Maybe some kind of cleaner used to flush the lines? Not clear, but if there's any highlight to those, they have that nice pillow ice that's very chewable on a long road trip. They got that going for them at least. We ordered a couple of chocolate shakes, and they were neither entirely chocolatey nor shaker.... Sort of an eclectic, half melted mix of things. The choice between regular catchup and spicy ketchup, in theory, is a good one. But when they failed to put either in the bag after being asked, well you're just playing with my emotions, Smokey. There's no way to give 0 stars but I would. I waited 20 minutes in line to get food I pay they forget one of my drinks and ask me to pull forward and someone will have your food up shortly. Went to this restaurant last night with the family and decided to eat in instead of carrying out. The food wasn't as good as usual. The burgers were under cooked. What was really upsetting was that there was an employee in the kitchen yelling obscenities ( the F bomb) loud enough for everyone in the building to hear. Not a good atmosphere for the family. I will have to admit that I have been to this location a few times and have a had a problem with almost every visit but perhaps, one? I like whataburger, I am not huge on fast food in general, as you know, but working in the south valley leaves me with but a few options. When this place opened up, it gave us, one more fast food choice. Hahaha! If that's what we get to break up the monotony, what they hey, why not. It was super busy when it first opened, as any place here in Albuquerque, everyone acts like they've never been to one, even though there are a few others around town. So of course the work bunch and I waited a few weeks for the buzz to die down before checking them out. First visit was nice, no problems or issues. Food came out in a timely manner, fresh and hot. Made well and not sloppily thrown together. I was with a few of the work fam and were very happy with our visit and quality of food. On another visit a meal and an extra sandwich was ordered which my coworker and I split. The second sandwich was a bit funky, almost like there was soap in it, like lettuce was rinsed with soapy water. It was weird. We requested another, which they were happy to take care of. Another occasion took my through the drive thru of which I needed to split an order with two forms of payment. I wanted to split it on two cards but was told by the cashier, who was speaking to her manager, that they could only split it if half is on a card and the other half is cash. So I agreed to that, then the cashier proceeded to put the whole thing on one of the cards. I reminded her that she said I could split the payments if half was on a card and half was cash, and that was what I wanted to do. I handed her cash to take care of the other half and waited for her to take care of the issue. She refunded the full amount to card and proceeded to redo my order. She had to call the manager because she couldn't figure out how to do it, and then I had the same problem with the manager. I had to pretty much tell her, again, that I wanted to split the bill and this was the only way that I was told I would be able to do it, that you can't split a bill into two payments on two cards, one had to be cash. And she was like yes, but how much? So i had to tell her, that (the total was $8.16) you can the card for $4.08 and take $4.08 from the $20 i handed you. I am sorry, but when you can't do simple math in your head, I would think that is a little bit of a problem when you are the manager. Now at this point, whataburger (this location) has lost it's spot on my list of places to go, but as it is easier to do a group run for work, it still makes the cut. Another request brought me to the drive thru. I ordered two meals and subbed onion rings for the fries on one of them, and even remembered to ask for 4 spicy ketchups and two ranches as well as because they are actually 35 cents a piece and don't like when you ask for the after you've payed. I also ordered the drink with no ice which I was worried about them messing up, nope, they handled that great. Not a piece of ice to be found. My order took awhile so they asked me to pull forward. Someone came and brought my order to my window I figured for sure they were going to forget the ranch and the ketchups. I took a peek in the bag and saw them. Huh, this may be a mistake free trip. I was pretty stoked and drove back to work in a pretty good mood. I got back to the office to divvy up the foods, and there weren't any onion rings. Now we can argue that I should have checked my order, that's my fault. But it is? I've already told you I want onion rings instead of fries and paid the difference, or should I say upcharge. Yet, I didn't get what I paid for. For a place with so many previous bad experiences, and me trying my best to be clear about what I want, I figure the least that could happen would be me getting my order right. Alas, that was too much to ask. Who knows when I will be back. Originally I wanted to give them five stars but after each visit came with issues and problems, they dwindled down to a two. My family goes here for dinner every couple weeks and we always enjoy our food. The caramel salted shake is to die for and I hope they make it a permanent menu item.
