The honest mechanic is not dead! This place isn't cheap, but that's your own damn fault for buying a VW. Tom runs a good business, and knows more about your car than you know about yourself. I've learned to take his advice whenever I'm lucky enough to get it. I've only had one service problem on a 2009 Passat, related to the intake manifold. After a proper scolding from Tom on not fueling my car with premium gas, I got a good tip that there were recalls related to the intake manifold. Thanks to the tip, I was reimbursed almost fully by VW for that repair. I will continue to come here until I manage to run my car into the ground. read more

These guys are the best! I brought my car in for some general maintenence and mentioned i thought I might be due for front brakes and there was a slight hesitation in acceleration. Tom said it was probably spark plugs. A couple hours later I get a call and he says my front brakes are fine and that my spark plugs were in need of replacing. They could have easily sold me on brakes but didnt. When i pick my car up it ran like the day i bought it, Tom got my VW Rabbit tuned up and running like a champ. VWs, unfortunately, require specialized care...and it's not cheap. I found Wheaton Service Center through its many, many positive reviews. They have always been able to work on my car when I need them to. They always fix my car in a timely fashion. Most importantly, I've never felt that I was paying for unnecessary work or been treated in a dishonest fashion. Look, my father owned and operated a repair shop in the NY/NJ area. I grew up around it. I know how they tend to operate: if they think they can get a few extra bucks from you or convince you that you need work done that you really don't, they will. That's the way my father ran his shop, and that's the way his competitors (and friends) ran theirs. I've never felt that Wheaton Service Center has taken advantage of me or charged me for work I didn't need. In fact, they are pretty straightforward with, "Well, this is something you need right now, but this is something that can wait." On my limited budget, that's always a plus. The Check Coolant Level light on my almost 10-year old VW Golf came on about a month ago. I was hesitant to bring my car to the dealer (due to anticipated high repair costs), and found Wheaton Service Center when I googled VW repair shops near Silver Spring. I was thoroughly impressed with Tom - he took the time to explain to me what could be wrong with the vehicle, what diagnostics showed, and how the shop would resolve the issue. Unfortunately, the issue was bigger than originally anticipated, and a much more expensive repair would have been necessary to resolve the coolant leak. I really appreciate Tom's honesty - Wheaton Service Center could have charged me quite a bit to repair the car - Tom explained that even more repairs might be necessary to resolve the issue and this could get prohibitively expensive. He led me to decide that I needed to purchase a new vehicle. Having a repair shop basically recommend you not to get repairs is kind of like a surgeon not recommending surgery. I so much appreciated Tom's ethics, even more so during a pandemic when Wheaton Service Center is not getting much business. I ended up buying a new VW Golf and I know where I will be taking it for service. Wish I would have found Wheaton Service Center sooner! read more

Wheaton Service Center provides excellent service, has friendly staff, and is cheaper and more thorough than the dealer service center. Tom is great to work with, and he's always willing to explain what's going on. Once he even referred me to a transmission specialist, forgoing a major service job in case the specialist could repair my wife's Jetta for a bit cheaper than it would cost me to replace the part in question. He cared more about the car and customer than making a quick buck. I no longer have a VW, but I would continue taking it to Wheaton Service Center if I did. Absolutely recommend. read more

Have our VW serviced there since 1996. Very good prices, not too low though. But much better then a dealer's. Excellent quality. Peter or Tom lately are very nice guys. Always will explain something and always are willing to help, change my light bulbs for free now. Give advice on what to do: replaceing your skid plate with a metal one is a very good idea. I would recommend Dieselgeek.com for the source or evolution imports. After we got a new car, we went to the dealer for the free oil change and then went to Tom for the rest of them. They use the same oil/filter as the dealer, and it is cheaper to have it serviced there. Nice guys. P read more

Are we talking about the same place? My experience was pretty bad. I took my VW in for a check up. However, I never heard back from them. So, after three weeks, I went up and asked WTF. Apparently, they did the diagnostic two days after I brought the car in, but they never seemed to find time to get back to me with the results. In the end, they said that the car was essentially unservicable. I was very disappointed. I will try to sell my VW, because I can't handle being treated this way. They must have so much business that they don't need or want mine. I'm POed over this deal, and it's been WEEKs ago that I finally got me car back. Terrible experience with their service!!! my jetta was some sort of leaking coolant, I took the car to that shop and I've been told need to replace everything for cooling system except radiator, the cost would be 800+ bucks!! then I took the car to VW dealer shop and get car repaired for just less than 400 bucks!!! We've been taking VWs here for at least 10 years. I always felt that we were getting straightforward answers to our questions and all the work done on the cars was necessary. Now I know very little about cars so I can only base this assessment on how my experiences with WSC felt versus the few times we took a car to a dealership. At the dealership I always felt like they were pushing extra repairs on you. Tom would sometimes recommended other repairs, but he also showed a willingness to send us to a dealership when there was a recall or other issues the dealership would fix for free. He also helped our son find a good VW repair shop when he moved away. The bottom line is that you can build a relationship with Tom that you can't match at a dealership, which makes the whole car repair experience a little easier to take. read more

This is the best car repair shop I have ever found in my many years of driving. Tom and the others are honest, if anything to a fault. Twice I got heavily discounted oil changes just because in writing up the bill they forgot to include the price of the oil. I pointed it out and tried to insist on paying the right price, but Tom said they would never, under any circumstances charge for something not in the write-up. I bought my 2010 VW CC, replacing a 2000 Passat, in part so I could keep them for service (they handle only VW passenger vehicles). Alas, this fall I sold the CC and bought an Audi Q5. Talented, honest, reliable staff. I have been going to WSC for almost 6 years now. I have never had to pay more than was initially estimated, and was always prepared for major repairs that were to come. This shop knows Volkswagens--it's all they do!--and they know what has to be fixed, what should be fixed, and what can wait. When they do make a repair it lasts. In six years, I've mostly gone in for routine maintenance, but I have had a few repairs (the water pump went out as I was driving away from having an oil change done. Before I paid, Tom told me that next time I come in I should plan to change the timing belt and water pump; so I was not surprised when it went). The repairs I have had them perform have lasted; I've never been in for the same issue twice. I'm in the process of changing cars, and I'm sad to say that I couldn't make another VW work this time, so I'll be parting ways from a repair shop that I trust. I'm not looking forward to the quest for a new one--but I'm sure Tom knows someone he can recommend. If you own a VW and want high-quality, honestly-priced work done the Wheaton Service Center team is your best bet. Make an appointment; drop-ins are welcome, but they wait a lot longer. read more

Don't be a fool like I was for so long and take your beloved VW anywhere but the Wheaton Service Center. I'm not kidding. If that doesn't convince you, here's why: I called in a panic after being quoted an outrageous price for work that "needed" to be done on my car, and when Tom answered the phone he was kind and calmed me down. He gave me a quote that was three hundred dollars (300!!) less than what the dealer had quoted me for the same work. When he called the day after I dropped my car off, I was afraid to call him back, imagining that he would tell me how many other things were actually wrong with my car and how many thousands of dollars that would cost (anyone who has owned a car for any length of time has had this conversation, right?). I prepared myself for the worst, but instead he told me that doing one simple thing would solve the problem, and he was right, it did. I would have had to pay $700 more if the dealer had done the work, and I would have left the dealer's repair shop with that awful feeling of being taken advantage of. But I know that the team at the Wheaton Service Center has my best interest at heart, which is priceless. I left happy and smiling, with assurances that if anything went wrong to just bring my car back in. I will be back for all of my VW's bumps and bruises, and I can honestly say I'm looking forward to my next visit! read more

Wheaton Service Center is by far the best experience I've ever had at a repair shop, and I can't recommend them highly enough. Not only did Tom know exactly what my electronics problem was when I called to make an appointment (after two places were baffled) he fit me in the same day. When our old and dying VW Passat was brought back to them, they gave us the info of all that needed to be fixed - but most helpful of all they told us that we better get rid of this puppy fairly soon because an even huger repair was coming not too far away that was just not worth it. I highly recommend it to anyone with a VW. I started bringing my car to Wheaton Service Center 5 years ago after being completely ripped off by a VW dealer. My Passat is a 2002 with over 180K miles on it, but I love it and don't want a new car- Wheaton Service Center makes that possible. Each time I go, they give me the good and bad news, what has to be done and what can wait, and estimates on all of it, so at any given time I can predict what I am going to spend to maintain my car. As with any old car though, there are unexpected issues, and Tom has walked me through how to handle every crisis, including one time when my battery randomly died while my car was in the middle of a street. He talked me through testing the battery and how to jump it, which actually took him well beyond the shop's close time. I ended up having to replace the battery myself since WSC was already closed, but they offered to check my handy work just to ensure everything was done properly. I could list at least a dozen other things that have gone wrong with my car (or that I have done wrong to my car), and Wheaton Service Center always fits me in, always gives me the options, and always handles it expeditiously. Everyone I have worked with there has been professional, nice to work with, and nothing but concerned about my car's condition and my safety. Above all, they are incredibly honest and reliable. No one likes to spend money fixing and maintaining their car, but it definitely eases the pain to know you are not being ripped off and that you can always count on your garage to help when you need it. Wheaton Service Center does all of this and more. It might be too hopeful to say I will never have to get a new car, but thanks to WSC, I don't anticipate it any time soon. Thanks guys!! read more
