As a gluten-intolerant gal who often feels a bit left out at meals (especially brunches), I'd been trying to get here for months! This weekend I finally had time. We arrived around 2pm with an hour until close. It was busy but we didn't have to wait for a table. We ordered a popover, cheddar cheese biscuits and sausage gravy, spicy potatoes and the prosciutto eggs Benedict. There seemed to be some issue with the ticketing system and we ended up waiting about 30 minutes before having to flag down a staff member to ask about our food. Our neighbors who arrived after us received their food much before us. The staff immediately addressed our concerns and the food came out shortly after. Our waitress, as an apology, gave us two baked goods on the house. Although we were quite hangry waiting for or food, the staff's swift action and kindness made up for it. Now on to the food! While the popover was good, the honey butter that accompanied it was the real star. I would recommend anything with the honey butter! Spicy potatoes were tasty but my girlfriend and I agreed that we would have liked them crispier. The eggs benedict were satisfying and I would highly recommend the seeded English muffin over the original. Finally, I've missed biscuits and gravy since cutting gluten. The gravy did not disappoint. I was in heaven. We also loved the cheddar biscuits and would recommend those over the plain. Overall, it wasn't the most mind-blowing meal of my life but I was so happy to look at a menu and be able to eat it all. Decent place. Nothing really stood out nor was anything displeasing. The avocado toast was the only one I've had not served on some type of sourdough or anything artisanal but it was fine. I opted for chicken sausage atop my English muffin sandwich. What was lacking with my sandwich was some type of jelly or aioli hence it was very dry to say the least. I have to state that I had tons of trouble trying to place an order via the "Ritual" app & when trying to use "UberEats" the menu didn't allow me to order certain products such as the avocado toast but a quick phone call to the restaurant allowed me to place an order & they gave me a specific pickup time. The most soft and fluffy donuts I've ever had in my mouth all I could think about what if this was a fat piece of cake right now!!! The fried vegetable entree with the dip tasted very fresh and delicious. Reminded me of a falafel. I could eat that every day as well! On a side note I walked in when they just opened and the staff was nice and friendly and ready to work. Some places the workers are not even awake yet. A friend of mine brought me here because she's wanted to try it for a while. She was set on the bagel and lox so I decided to get something different. I was stuck mainly between the pancakes and waffles, so I asked the waiter for her thoughts. Apparently the waffles are only available on the weekends, so I went ahead and got those. The chocolate chip waffles came with bananas on top, and were just scrumptious. Without being too sweet, they satisfied my sweet tooth. Crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. They were easy to cut and had the chocolate chips spread out nicely. The bananas has a sort of glaze over them, not entirely sure what it is, but adds a nice crispy and not too tough texture to the bananas. A couple more slices of bananas would have been nice! Employees were all very kind. I asked for honey and she forgot for a bit but came back, apologized and asked if I still wanted it, then brought it out right away. I was so sad to see that Wheat's End has really changed. I used to go often at the old location, but this was my first time in the new spot. No dine-in, prices have skyrocketed, and the quality has diminished significantly. The beet-cured lox, a regular favorite of mine, wasn't nearly as good as it used to be. The lox tasted frozen, the bagel over toasted, and it no longer comes with salad. We also got a pumpkin cinnamon roll and chocolate chip cookie, both of which were not good at all. The cookie was dry as a bone and the cinnamon roll was similar and overly spiced. Really disappointing :( read more

My daughter and I drove across town 45 minutes because I'm gluten free. Unfortunately everything we had was pretty gross. I had a basic salad with grilled chicken. The chicken was super rubbery..almost fake looking and tasting. My daughter had the chicken sandwich. The chicken itself was good. The gf bun not so good. A must try for everyone!! My husband and I visited this place for brunch on weekend morning and man was I glad we did! Mind you, showing up hungry and having a 30 min wait isnt always fun but glad we did wait! Being gluten free myself, i was overjoyed at the options. They are endless and the whole menu is open to eat! A rare find for those gluten free. The food was delicious! As well as presented nicely. We started with two different flavors of donuts, chocolate and pumpkin, both delicious. For warning, the chocolate is very decadent. Then I had trouble deciding on the main so I got one slice of avocado toast and then a side chive biscuit with vegetable gravy. The toast was awesome and the biscuit delicious. Although I wish I would have had the sausage gravy. There wasnt anything wrong with the veggie and it was tasty, but came with chunks of veggies in it which I wasnt expecting. Quaint neighborhood cafe serving an entire gluten-free menu! Despite being very gluten tolerant, the name and restaurant aesthetics caught my eye. On a Sunday afternoon, there was no wait for two seats at the counter. It was a tight fit but we were hungry! We ordered a Bellini, OJ, pancakes, lox bagel, chocolate donut, and a side of potatoes. My best friend and I were in Chicago for a concert. She has celiacs, and I am vegan, so finding a place with both options isn't always an easy task. We tried this place out, and were pleasantly surprised. The interior is adorable, although it is take out only currently. I appreciate them taking precautions in this sense. We both got iced lattes, which there were lots of syrup/milk options for. For food, I got the everything bagel with vegan cream cheese, and my friend got the lemon poppyseed donut. Both were delicious, and very reasonably priced. The employees were extremely accommodating and kind- they answered all of our questions very knowledgeably. Ahhh. I want to give this 5 stars so badly. The food is incredible and the staff is really nice but they have really struggled with wait times for their orders in COVID. I went a month ago and they lost our order and we waited over an hour and a half. They gave us a free coffee and I absolutely understand that happens. We gave it another try today and it took over an hour for an avocado toast and donut. The food is incredible and I know that staffing can be challenging in COVID but fair warning that if you are going to get food here you must have the expectation of waiting at least an hour. Went here today for a late "lunch" but ordered breakfast. We got the skillet which is described (on their menu) as, "spicy potatoes, bacon, seasonal grilled vegetables, a slice of sour dough, topped with 2 fried eggs". What we actually got was grilled red peppers and onions topped with two SLICES of bacon, the worst GF bread Ive ever had, and on the other side of the container the "spicy" potatoes, as in seasoned, topped with two eggs. Each of these "skillets" were $16! It was a huge rip off. We will NEVER we back. I could of easily made this $5 meal at home with a slice of Trader Joes bread and would've been 100% better in flavor and with wayyyy more vegetables. I finally am here. It's been several months since tasting the English muffins at the gluten free expo. The cheese biscuit is buttery, cheesy and moist. By far the best gluten free biscuit I've tasted and pretty close to the best ever. Ask that it be served warm-heavenly.... The cinnamon roll comes out piping hot. It is sweet and had just the right amount of cinnamon. The bread part is a little sticky. Apple-pear pancakes. They come with maple syrup and candied pecans. Nice twist on traditional pancake. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about menu. There are usually vegan donuts, cookies and muffins available which are quite tasty. They also have English muffins prepackaged to go-they're pretty tasty when toasted. read more

So good and such a cute little cafe located on a busy Broadway street. I got omelette with potatoes on the side. The best potatoes I tried by far. They are a bit spicy and have a lot of seasoning. My Celiac sister in law and I came by on a short trip to Chicago and it was so WORTH IT. There are not many completely GF places anywhere so it was such a relief and pleasure to have this option while traveling for her. We got a latter, chai lattes, orange spice doughnut, egg sandwich and avocado toast. Everything was amazing. Love the food and the atmosphere and service was really, really nice! I have been wanting to try this brunch place for the longest time. And... let me tell you I was NOT disappointed! The food here was AMAZING, it didn't taste gluten free at all. I went here because my friend is gluten free and the entire restaurant is GF, but I come back because of the vegetarian biscuits and gravy. I'm not a huge biscuit person to begin with -- as a kid, the biscuit was just the vessel for the sausage gravy -- but the biscuits here are amazing. Buttery, flaky and soft in just the right proportion. And the mushroom gravy is done well. They now serve the eggs separately to the biscuit and gravy so you can mix them in your preferred proportions, but it's still just as good as always. I tried a cinnamon roll and it was OK -- I'm sure it's a treat if you're gluten free, but if don't have restrictions, there are better cinnamon rolls to be had. I recently came here with my three nieces and they were able to accommodate all of us (a party of 8), but you'll want to get there early if you have a large party or want to avoid a wait on the weekends around brunch time as it's a relatively small spot. read more

Wow, I wish I lived closer because I would be here ALL THE TIME. I mean, dairy free hollandaise for eggs benedict. OMG! So I don't have any gluten issues, but a good friend has celiac, so this was a great place for us to meet up for brunch. She certainly appreciated the wealth of options. We both had benedicts with prosciutto. The menu does not mention it, but the waitress told me that they could do a dairy-free hollandaise, which, no joke, made my day. I have missed being able to eat bennies!! And it was so yummy!!! I can't really speak to the texture of the english muffin, as it was beneath all the other deliciousness, but the taste was great! Wouldn't have known it was gluten free. I also got a single egg scrambled plus a blueberry muffin for my toddler daughter. I stole a few bites of the muffin, but mostly she devoured it. The muffin was really good - great texture and flavor. Nice size as well. The seating area isn't huge, but it didn't seem to be an issue. It did get a little drafty, as the exterior door isn't protected at all, but overall, that was such a small blip to an otherwise awesome experience that I'm not even docking a star for it. I had just gotten off a flight from Florida to Illinois and was starving. I looked for a gluten free restaurant near me and Wheat's End came up. I had never been there before, so I was taking a gamble which is always the case with gluten free food :-). I looked at the menu and they had food food (lol) not just cookies or bread. I lost my mind. I ordered waffles, a chicken sandwich (last had 10+yrs ago), a grilled cheese sandwich, pumpkin ginger doughnut, and a cinnamon roll (can't recall last time I had one). All that was just for me a 5'2" female. My guest ordered the shrimp and grits and a shrimp panini style sandwich. So, after order all this food, I was nervous that I wouldn't like it. Boy was I wrong!! I devoured the gooey grilled cheese on fresh bread in the car. I don't know what grains they used in that sandwich but wwwoooowww!!! Then drove 1hr to my hotel to eat the rest. The fried chicken sandwich I'm sure would easily beat Popeyes or Chick-fil-A. It was still crispy and fried to perfection. The chicken was juicy and fresh. The bread wasn't soggy by the time I arrived at the hotel. I tried my friend's food as well. The vegetables in the shrimp sandwich were crispy and not over sauteed. The bread was fantastic. I ate the blueberry waffles and sweets the next day and I was equally as impressed as the first day. They are closed on Mondays so I couldn't drive the hr. to get it fresh but it held up overnight. If you struggle to find gluten free restaurants with an extensive menu, you definitely have to try Wheat's End in IL!!! I give them a 10 out of 5!! I was visiting Chicago for work and was excited to get to try Wheat's End Café. I had heard of them before but just was never in the right area to be able to give them a try. I ended up visiting for just a long weekend but was able to go twice, once for their weekday menu on Friday and once on Sunday for brunch. On Friday I got the crispy veggie fritters with white bean hummus for the dip, with a side of spicy potatoes. My BF got the egg and bacon breakfast sandwich on bagel with a side of fries. We also got a dairy free popover to share. I was really impressed with the veggie fritters and the spicy potatoes. It is impossible to pick a favorite because they were both just so darn good. The sandwich my BF got was huge; it was an open faced bagel with a full sized omelet on top. It was a really great deal and the bagel had a great texture. The fries were also really good too; I even managed to steal a few. On this day we ended up getting 2 cinnamon rolls to-go to eat later. On Sunday the menu was quite a bit different. I ended up with the blueberry pancakes and the BF ended up with french toast. We both got the vegan butter and maple syrup was available on the table. For our additional side items we got, 2 fried eggs, nitrate-free bacon, breakfast potatoes and of course another order of the spicy potatoes. The only complaints I have were the cinnamon rolls were very hard to eat later when we went to try them. I am sure they would have been better if we would have had a microwave available to reheat them. Also, on the Sunday we went the maple syrup was very hard to get out of the container and my BFs eggs that we ordered over hard still had a runny yolk. They remade them though and gave us a discount which was nice. Overall I love seeing gluten free restaurants doing well and this place was definitely a busy joint when we showed up Sunday around 1:30pm. My wife is gluten-free and she has been searching for a gluten-free brunch place forever. She was so thrilled when she found this place! She loved the blueberry pancakes and the classic popover. They both tasted amazing. I had some as well and they tasted fantastic - I couldn't tel the difference between these pancakes and regular pancakes that I usually get. The 48 hour dish was also delicious. The meat was so tender, and their home potatoes were soft but crispy not the outside. The service was also really good. Let me start by saying, I have a severe gluten allergy. It's really hard to find restaurants that are safe to eat at. Wheat's End is a haven for those with gluten allergies and Celiacs. The food was delicious and the staff very friendly. The ambiance of the cafe is great, it has style, is comfortable, and isn't cramped. It's disappointing they aren't open all day. Closing at 3 pm made it a bit tricking to get there while exploring Chicago. read more

I hate to say that because as a gluten-free eater I wanted to love this place... sadly my popover was underwhelming (& overly eggy & soggy versus moist in the middle), my spicy potatoes were greasy, and my eggs were rubbery. I did enjoy the Bellini, but it wasn't either big enough or good enough to warrant $8.50 (one of the two would have been enough). Service is a bit tone deaf too... I was eating alone and was seated next to a couple along the cramped bar at the window... several times we were asked things or treated like we were together. Been wanting to try this place as I am gluten intolerant. I ordered the 48 hour ribs and seemed to be lacking any sort of seasoning or salt. The rib was cooked great but just needed an additional kick of flavor. The chive biscuits are amazing and dense, not dry at all! I brought home a lemon poppy seed donut and that was good. Oh the struggles of living on an Autoimmune Paleo protocol! Thanks to this place we were able to have a Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free and Soy-Free breakfast. Not only was the food compliant per our dietary needs, it was 5 stars in quality & taste! We came here at 10:10am, exactly 10 minutes after opening on a Saturday. There were only two tables left for two. Lucky us! So if you hate waiting try to be here close to opening hours. A very clean and hip restaurant. First of all, hilarious name. Second, do you know how hard it is to find gluten free AND dairy free food?? Practically impossible. So many times it's one or the other. But I'm visiting from Missouri and knew I had to try this place, and thank goodness I did! The everything bagel was freakin delicious. The decadent chocolate donut melted in my mouth. The pumpkin cinnamon roll was not overwhelmingly pumpkin and just tasted like a normal roll (in the best way!!)
