Everything is done over the phone which was kind of sketchy as I am older and expect to go to a place of business when renting. They had a pick up location near me which was convenient with instructions to call a number that gives instructions on where to locate the key. Disappointed!!! Drove from LAX to San Diego , just for the door to FALL off the hinge!! and NO AC, NO charging port, so I was stranded for good while. They offered to switch the van but not until the end of the day, but that wasn't in the itinerary to stay in SD. The next day, we drove back to LAX , to switch the van. This is the worst company to rent from in the history of rental vans. The communication, the parking garage return ticket, the cleanliness of the van, the drivers seat belt was nonfunctioning, and they have the worst follow through of any rental company I have ever dealt with. Not to mention the smell inside the van. . . They also canceled my reservation the night before I was to fly into SeaTac to transport my wheelchair bound sister home. They had no plan, no resolution, and no options. When I asked them to compensate me for stranding me and my dying little sister in another state with no notice and no resolution, they said they wouldn't charge me for it. That was their big solution to a problem they created... I was not pleased. DO NOT trust these people to keep their word. Wish I could give 0 Stars, I was really hoping to have a great experience but unfortunately it was awful. I rented and van, paid upfront, also they held a 500 deposit. I was told I would receive instructions to pick up the vehicle but I did not. I called once I arrived at the parking lot in Orange County CA, and was given instructions. After paying 80 dollars to exit the lot I went home. I parked the car in my driveway. Because the key fob did not work to lock the doors I manually locked and checked them all. The next morning I went out and the car would not start. I could go through the whole story but it would be a waste of your time. Let's just get to the point. I called on Saturday, told them the battery was not good as we had tested it. I was told they have no team in CA and therefore there was no real way to help me. EVERY time I got into the car it had to be jumped. There is NO ONE on Sundays to call to help if you have problems. If you are willing to get stuck somewhere with a wheelchair and no way to get to your destination then feel free to rent from them, but if you are like most people who travel with a wheelchair, then DO NOT RENT, or you may be trying to find a medical transport to get yourself home ( and those are not cheap). Finally on Monday I asked them to pick up the van, of course they had no team so they sent out someone to change the battery. On Saturday I had asked for a manager to call. After calling everyday and some days twice, I finally got a call back Wednesday evening. The manager was off for three days and then told me that on her first day back in the office she was doing important things so did not call me back (!customers are not important things) on day 5 I left two messages before she called back. Heather was extremely rude, talked over me, and tried to blame me for the battery issue. She did not care that the problem was unresolved over the weekend. She offered to give me 1/2 day back. Had she seemed to care, that may have been good, but by this point it was not and to be perfectly honest, I could care less if I get anything back except the 80 I paid in parking. I just want to be done with this whole thing and their rude manager. When I asked who the owner was she told me to look it up, then she purported to be the owner. After looking up this info, either she is not telling the truth or their records are incorrect. Maybe she is a child of the owner and feels entitled, not sure, but either way I am making sure that you the consumer know how poorly this business is run. Because anyone who travels with a wheelchair is already in a more precarious position by being at the mercy of others, please be warned, this is not the way to go. I flew into Houston, Tx, expecting to pick up my handicap van rental with my disabled mother who can't walk and the van said, "look for me"!!! After renting from Wheelers previously, I recently posted a very favorable review of which I must now retract. It was no more than 2 hours after we picked up the van, and the 3rd time using the sliding door when it came off the top track. The door was literally attached to the van with only a bottom connector. When I phoned in for assistance, the Supervisor, Heather wanted us to try and fix it. I told her that I didn't want to risk it completely falling off the van and injuring us and to send assistance. It was a couple of hours before anyone showed up, so I had to get an Uber to pick up our wheelchair bound passenger who had just had a medical procedure. When the repairman got the door back on the track, we immediately returned it. This was my 3rd time renting from Wheelers in a month. Because of the unsafe rental, Uber expense, and inconvenience, I expected some sort of an apologetic offer of compensation. We recently rented a van from Wheelers Los Angeles for the first time, and it will be the last. We were charged an extra full days rental for returning our van a few hours late. Being unfamiliar with Los Angeles and running into traffic caused us to return the van late. The supervisor could have easily waived the extra charge but decided that the $150 extra day charge was worth more than keeping a first-time customer happy and securing future rentals from us. Yes, the contract had a specific time to return the vehicle, but having run into unforseen circumstances caused us to be a few hours late. A small late penalty I could see here, but charging an extra full day is excessive and petty. We even called to let them know we were running late. If you need to rent a wheelchair van for yourself or a loved one, AVOID Wheelers Van Rentals at all costs. They don't stand behind their promises, and their vehicles are unsafe and dangerous to drive. Let me explain. In late May, I rented a van from Wheelers while mine was in the body shop after being rear ended. Their nearest office was over two hours away, so I agreed to an additional charge of $300, for them to deliver the wheelchair van to me and then pick it up at the end of the rental period. All seemed fine. Since our house can be difficult to find, I had Wheelers drop the van off at a local supermarket parking lot, to make it easier for their delivery team. The rental was an MV-1, a vehicle designed from the ground up to be a wheelchair van, but which ultimately failed in the automotive marketplace. Being a real gearhead, I was excited to be able to drive an MV-1. On the 3.5-mile drive from the supermarket to my driveway, I was shocked at how awful this vehicle was. The brakes and steering both required extraordinarily high levels of strength to operate. This vehicle has both power brakes and power steering, but you wouldn't know it. And I'm plenty strong. I have driven cars without power brakes and steering that took much less effort to turn and stop! In addition, the driver's seat was not securely attached to its base; it rocked back and forth and was not safe. Finally, many interior trim pieces were either missing, or fell off during this short drive. With the awful and unsafe steering and brakes, I assumed the power brake and power steering reservoirs must be low on fluid. So as soon as I got home, I popped the hood and grabbed my cans of power brake and power steering fluid so I could top them off. I was shocked to find that both reservoirs were completely full up to the marked line. This vehicle is unsafe, unfit to be on the road, and definitely should not be rented to the public, especially to handicapped drivers. It had Arizona plates, and I know it would never pass the required annual inspection here in Massachusetts. I immediately let Wheelers know that this vehicle was unsafe and undriveable. One of their representatives admitted to me on the phone that Wheelers was sorry to have bought a fleet of new MV-1's. They know these vans are absolutely awful. But Wheelers is stuck, since there is no resale market for these automotive pigs. They finally came a couple days later and retrieved the van that I had only driven for three and a half miles. Wheelers did refund half of the roughly $950 total rental fee. But they insist I pay the remaining $475. Since they had my credit card number, I now have to take them to court, since no one should have to pay $475 to drive an automotive death trap for three and a half miles! Stay away from Wheelers, if you value your safety and that of your loved ones!! read more

I needed a last minute 2 day wheelchair van rental and wheelers was nearby and was able to accommodate my needs. The overall experience was as positive as renting a 120 a day van could be. Just 2 things that made me doc a star. 1. The tire pressure light kept going off even though there was no tire pressure issue 2. I DO NOT recommend this company. We spent two hours of the first day of our San Diego vacation in a very hot garage trying to get the van lift and doors to work. The outside temperature was around 90° that day and it was much hotter inside the garage. Unfortunately the only other van that was available was a van that had been "put out of service." Wheeler's words, not ours. It was clear from the beginning why that van had been put out of service. First, neither the door nor the lift were electric. I specifically requested a van with an electric door and lift because my husband has a bad back. We never would have chosen Wheeler's if we would have been told we would be receiving a van with a manual lift and door. The new van not only was all manual but it was also really bouncy because the shocks are in bad shape. I was in neck pain the entire trip because of all that bouncing around. As well, the brakes were very touchy. If you just tried to gently put on the brakes, the van stopped abruptly. There may have been other reasons why the van had been put out of service but those were the issues that affected us. Wheeler's does not maintain their vans. Wheeler's saves money by not having a person in San Diego who does maintenance. We were not unable to go on a sailboat ride that we had planned because of all of the time wasted plus the poor condition of the van we did take. read more

Wheelers is the worst company I have ever used. We have rented wheelchair accessible vans many times so when we needed to make a trip to Seattle did not hesitate to rent again. This was our first and last time using Wheelers. On Friday we were to pick up the van at a Wally World since the company is in Arizona. When we arrived the van was filthy. Trash and dog hair all over and even coffee spilt inside. We had requested and paid for the passenger seat to be removed for the wheelchair. It was not done. We called and they said they would refund us for the seat removal but their employee was part time so we were out of luck as far as the seat and had to clean the van ourselves. They had a Wally World employee help but he had just had open heart surgery so an employee from another location had to help. I returned to the hotel to pick up the wheelchair passenger, my wife. Only to find out there was not a seat belt for her seat. It was found in the back of the van later, not hooked up. All this made us late for our appointment. Saturday we drove one place and stayed for the day so no problems. Sunday we went to a mall about 20 minutes away, About 7 pm we pulled out of a parking lot and the car died in the middle of the intersection on a busy street. Luckily there was a police officer and he and another pushed us to the side but we were still in the street in the turn lane. We called Wheelers. They had no back up plan. After over an hour and multiple calls to Wheelers, we finally got assistance. There was not a wheelchair taxi on duty and after trying to add gas which was not the problem they decided to tow the van to a dealer. Since it was closed it would be outside the gates. The plan for us? Just leave us on the side of the road. That's right no plan to get us to our condo 20 minutes away. We called back and they talked to the tow company. They were not happy about it but finally agreed to put us on the flatbed in the van, take us to our condo and reload the van to be left closer to where we were staying. We were told this was legal in Washington. We later found out it is legal if certain conditions were met, which were not. It was a rough and scary ride. When we told Wheelers that we had an important meeting at 7 am and that we made this trip for business and had to be there they responded in almost a laugh, "well that's not going to happen." The van was not ready until 3 pm the next day. By the time the mechanic picked me up and I took him back it was too late to do any business that day. During all this we were told by Wheelers that they have had this problem a lot with their vans and blamed it on the conversion. They told the mechanic the same thing and how to fix it. If they knew this they should have been proactive and fixed the problem before we broke down or had a back up plan. This was not enough. Tuesday we tried again to get things done. The first stop I happened to look down and saw there was a big gouge in a tire. I contacted Wheelers and they told us to replace it. We went several places before finding one that had the tire but they wouldn't take Wheelers credit card. We ended up replacing it with a compatible tire. Another couple hours lost. We only had Thursday with no issues before returning the van on Friday. After several calls we received an email that they credited us with 1 day and 2 days we could use on a future trip. When we returned we called and talked to the owner on several occasions. He agreed to refund the money for the seat removal which they hadn't and refund 2 additional days instead of the credit for a future rental. About a week later we were credited 1 day and the seat. I called again and was told the owner was a busy person and we couldn't just talk to him whenever we wanted. I left a message and a week later called again. When I was finally able to talk to him he denied he had agreed to 2 days, I understand vehicles can break down but because of this I lost a lot of time I needed for business. It cost me a lot of money both for the trip and for what I was unable to do so will need to make another trip. The worst part was their attitude. Nothing was their fault. It was the people they hired that didn't do the job cleaning and maintaining the vehicle, they are not local so can't have a backup plan, it is the van converters fault that it causes problems and it was just too bad that we paid for the use of a van for 7 days and only were able to use it for 3. read more

To whom it may concern: I would NOT rent a van from Wheelers Accessible Van Rentals, a nationwide company, the location where I did business is located at 6141 W Century Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90045. Wheelers is credited with being the first wheelchair accessible van rental companies to serve across the US at premier metropolitan and tourist cities. The particular van I rented has Arizona plates and is not indicative of business headquarters, some vans owned by the franchise license stores are also moved from one location to another by clients and company. During my experience, I worked with two individuals, Julie, and David. I leased a van from this company for four days, September 19-22. On the timeline of events happened in this matter. On the 16th, I was supposed to have been charged $500 fee for a damage deposit which I was told was refundable, however, I was later told by the same representative that if I had insurance I didn't need to place a holding/damage deposit. On the 17th around 6:07 pm after emailed Wheelers with a copy of my insurance and my ID and the response from Julie, said "Thank you for sending the documents. We send out notifications the night before w/the van location, make/model/AZ lic plate # and instructions to call when you get to the van. We will then unlock it and enable it for you. Have a good night! Julie". I was under the impression that everything was good to go since I provided my own insurance and had some semblance of confirmation from the company. On September 18, 2019, I received a text at 11:44 am: "Timothy, your Wheelers van at Joe's Parking (6151 W Century Blvd), is a 2016 Granite Dodge Caravan with Arizona license plate KBL 82 At van call 623-776-8830 to have it unlocked and provide beginning mileage/fuel. *If flying call 310-670-0290 for accessible shuttle. Jenna". On the day on our flight September 19, 2019, at 12:28 pm, I received a text from Wheelers, "Hello, Timothy...please call us prior to picking up the van today. Your authorization did not go through and we cannot release the van, until the matter is resolved. You can reach us at 623-776-8830. Thank you - Serena". After receiving this text I was a bit worried and it got my heart pounding, thinking about my transportation arrangements once I landed in LA, because I am in an electric wheelchair it is not an easy thing to find readily available transportation that suits my needs. I had my sister call to find out the situation because we paid for the rental with her debit card and I have a speech impairment. From this point, it's my understanding that my sister and Julie exchanged words and my family and I got a negative impression that Julie was trying to get us to pay an increased rate higher than quoted. The quote was for $742.56 with a $500 holding fee (if we didn't have full coverage insurance). The contract states, "Renter will be charged for the entire rental at the time the reservation is made. The $500 Authorization/Deposit will be taken 24 hours prior to the start of the rental date and held during the term of the rental. So long as there are no additional fees or charges, the authorization is voided. Those taking the Wheelers LDW (Loss Damage Waiver) or RLC (Renter's Liability Coverage) will have a $500 authorization/deposit." I feel that this company supplied us with false and misleading information. I was very upset about this happening because I was on a strict budget, and did not want to miss out on my family vacation. The van did not function well at all with the main problems being that the van couldn't accommodate the weight of the wheelchair and the air compressor was malfunctioning even when supposed to be turned off. The wheelchair van equipment appeared to be unsafe. The air compressor continued to turn off and on while we (my siblings and I) were driving down the highway and caused the van to bounce and jerk, which was unsettling and seems dangerous I couldn't go where I really wanted to visit and/ or planned to go because the van was not really stable and I was afraid driving it would cause serious damage. I had my brother call and speak to the company, he was told by David that the particular van I was issued to us by Julie (his wife) was not to be used due to maintenance reports. I have tried reconnecting with the company and haven't received a response from the CEO (as I requested). This was a very disappointing experience and greatly limited my plans during my vacation. I suspect this may have been taken as an offense because I feel I may have been treated unfairly because my sister and I exchanged words with Julie and then (I believe) the next day when my brother called to report the maintenance on the rental, David told my brother Julie was his wife & Wheelers was a family-owned company. I have to admit after reading reviews of Wheelers on Yelp I was very nervous about our trip to Los Angeles with my daughter. I have to say that our experience simply could not have been better. The van was spacious inside easily fitting my daughter's large power wheelchair. We had a very kind and helpful contact person named Leslie who was texting with us late into the evening to make sure everything was great on both the pick up and drop off times. Before we ever got on the plane I had many questions and received prompt responses every time. I honestly cannot thank Wheeler's more for being such an integral part of what ended up being a flawless vacation. My advice to anyone looking at wheelchair vans is to speak to the companies on the phone and not just online. Traveling with someone in a wheelchair is always going to be complex. When things don't go smoothly for us the impact is magnified tremendously. I would advise you NOT rent from this company. I rented in the Tampa Bay area. The van was dirty, had been smoked in, the check engine light never went off (even after checking the gas cap), the ramp AND door to the accessible side of the van literally came off!! When complaining to the company they said my complaints were not in their control! I requested a discount on the egregious $100.00 a day rental and all they did was evade responsibility and offer me 20% off the next rental. Like I would rent again from them?? Very disappointed with this company. We rented a van for a once in a lifetime trip to the Grand Canyon. We had to "pay extra" to get the van at 7:30pm as it was after 7pm. We arrived at the airport and we were given the wrong location by text message for the van. We walked to the complete opposite end of the airport, with 5 suitcases and my son who uses a wheelchair and a ventilator only to discover the van was not there. Called the number Wheelers gave us - on hold for 25 minutes waiting. Finally reached someone who told us the correct location (the other end of the airport) and we schlepped everything back. It was not a van as we had requested and specifically discussed with the rental agent, but instead was an MV-I - a huge tank of thing. Retrieved the key from the gas cap as person on the phone could not unlock it remotely. I called Wheelers the next day and was told that all the vans were given to other customers. I expressed my dismay about our airport debacle as well as the ery obvious "bait and switch" with the van rental and requested a call from the manager/owner to discuss. I was told he was on vacation. It has been over a week and no call back yet. Insult to injury was the terrible gas mileage greatly increased the cost of our trip and the vehicle itself was terrible to drive/maneuver/park. we had a confirmed reservation, credit card registered for pickup of a wheelchair van to get my folks from Tampa airport. On the day of arrival, we called to find out where to pick up the van, they said they did not have one now. This was a total blindside! We had to scramble big time to find a way to even pick them up at the airport as they sat there for hours. When I called them , they said, "well we were busy the other day when this reservation was made, so you should have called to verify we have the van". We were hoping this company would be the answer to our transportation problems for our mother after having less than successful attempts with other wheelchair transportation companies. Unfortunately, this was not the case. We had reserved one of their vans to transport my mother to our father's funeral. We arrived when scheduled only to find out the van we were to use had been given to someone else. Needless to say, this added to an already stressful morning. Their offer to get the van to us as soon as possible, was not an option given it was a military funeral on a very strict timeline. Fortunately, we were able to find last minute transportation. We were extremely disappointed with our van rental experience from Wheelers. It took until the very last minute to get things lined up and the paper work to sign before we flew out to Phoenix. Each time the paperwork had an incorrect email so I finally asked for their email to connect us and then they could reply and attach the papers. The price for a week was extremely steep but we accepted that the price was more than double a normal van rental because of the accessibility and the scooter. We arrived late evening and were able to have the van delivered to our hotel the next morning. That was a great service! That's where it ended. We paid $1300 Canadian for 8 days and when we went out to the van, we couldn't believe it. The "fully modern luxury van" was actually a 2004 Chevy Venture, that had been modified. My husband is a mechanic and even he felt uncomfortable driving it. The steering was awful. It wandered all over the road and the "power" steering seemed almost non existent. The breaks squealed and would grind when applied. The door to the glove box as well as to the storage cubby under the drink holder would both fall off in your hand when you opened them. The signal light on the right hand turn didn't work externally and we were issued a citation for it. The floor of the van was so low that it would scrape across every single spot that was slightly risen - speed bumps were impossible to go over. The luxury interior they speak of was all torn on both of the sliding doors from the lift. The spare tire was mounted in the back behind the rear seat and as there were four of us travelling, we had no where to store the luggage. We had to load the scooter, and pack the luggage in around it each time we stopped. When we arrived at our destination over two hours away from Phoenix, the scooter "included" in the price did not work. When we arrived home, we were charged an additional $300 for the scooter from the signed agreement because, apparently, they "forgot to add it'. the scooter didn't work and they refused to remove the charge. It was my mistake in assuming that a van rental was twice the normal price because it was handicap accessible, would still be a current rental vehicle. It was there mistake for misrepresenting the age and condition of the vehicle. I rented better vehicles from rent a wreck while I was in college. My in laws were uncomfortable riding in the vehicle and we altered our plans because of it. It was a very disappointing experience. read more
