We were surprised that only 4 or 6 people were there on a Saturday night as we had called for reservations. The restaurant was clean but they didnt have several things on the menu (lasagna and clam strips) The bartender was also the server and the person at the door was in her twenties, wearing short short and texting on her phone while holding the door open - never saw her again during our visit. Can't beat the food, prices and portions. Very informal, neighborly atmosphere. Many regulars present at the bar and dining area but new comers are always welcomed by the very friendly staff who are always willing to converse and answer any questions etc. Service can become a little slow during busy times. If you are in a time crunch (on a lunch break etc,) be sure to mention it to the waitress. Their specialty is seafood and the fried clams are excellent. read more

I recently found this jewel of a restaurant and have been there 3 times.....Its a well set-up restaurant with a huge parking lot outside and a corresponding nicely laid-out interior with a really nice bar/eating counter and well-spaced tables of 2 different heights.. The clientel were quiet and quite friendly.....Today I had a very genius portion and salad , liver with onions and a nice baked potato..... the server is named Riley who could not have been more friendly, personal and professional.....The meal was absolutely superb ! From the moment I drove up tp the second I left I was treated with respect and dignity.....My experience was that of commitment to the patron.....I will be going there again.....and incidentally the portions were very very genius and I needed 2 boxes to bring the balance home with me......I trust I will see you there ! chow !...and cia !... read more

The menu presents many choices, but not all are good. The baked haddock is good, but anything fried is iffy. Lasagna is huge, sandwiches ok while burgers are just so so. The beer draft system requires cleaning and attention. Favorite part of any visit is the super nice bar tender read more

Strange So I heard a lot of good things about the WI and sadly I didn't don't see it. Now we only stopped in on Sunday night and it was quiet. Had a Rib eye last night. Very good, cooked to taste, served hot. With the best fries in town, at a good price.

The bride and I stopped for lunch last weekend. We were very impressed with the place. The young lady tending bar was very attentive and provided great service. Atmosphere was typical tavern but in a good way. Spotless restrooms and friendly customers. We could tell they were all regulars but talkative and welcoming to us. I had twin lobsters and she had an Italian grinder. Lobsters were very good and a bargain. The grinder was more of a ham and cheese with pepperoni. While good the bread was stale. Bummer. We will definitely be back. Happily it's a bar full of guys who speak like gentlemen. Not a single f-bomb was heard. Amazing in this day and age. I was impressed. read more

You can always guarantee a good meal when going to the wheelock inn. The prices are reasonable n the portions are large. Service can be hit or miss depending when you go , where you sit and what day/time. I find if you go right at 5pm , there is less conflict with the bar crowd and likely able to experience better service. We sat at the bar on this most recent visit and found it hard to flag down someone to wait on us. The lower review is only because of the service and I would go back again as the food is that good. read more

I've been going here since it was The Anchor. Then a while ago it appears new owners sunk some money into the place. So, keep in mind that this is a step up from what it had been. The place looks better with a stone cascade on the outside. I'm glad they kept the cheesy 80s pin up girl. It's pretty funny. Although, it would be nice if the walls weren't plain white. I'd suggest throwing a color on the wall to liven it up- especially since most of the patrons look dead. The clientel could have been taken from The Winchester from Shaun of the Dead. Dogs may not be able to look up but the people in there are a bunch of zombies. I only go here because it is close to a friend's house. The drinks are reasonably priced but the food is terrible. It's just microwaved crap that's a step below warm catfood. In my experience, the servers have been very nice. On the other hand, I'm a little annoyed that they don't take credit cards. On the whole, the place has made some progress but has a lot further to go. read more

It's a strange place. My experience was like something out of the Monty Python Argument Clinic sketch. I went to order a lobster for my sister-in-law and me, and I took an extra second to explain because of a mistranslation I noticed (her English isn't fluent yet), because she didn't understand I was ordering a double, and went to order a third. Suddenly the waitress starts belittling me, cussing at me, interrupting me to put me down and call me name, and even implying that I'm "F-ed up" on drugs --- when really I just process the world differently due to my mild autism, so she's not familiar with my mannerism. The verbal abuse was unsolicited, and especially caught me off guard since I was speaking to her politely. Had I said nothing, we were guaranteed to get an order neither of us wanted and paid for extra food, but the waitress had zero patience and was simply the rudest waitress I've ever seen in my life; and that includes in every country I've been to. Very disappointing, drinks were decent and seafood was pretty good. However, three of the people in my group ordered steaks medium-rare and all three came out raw. Not rare, raw. We also heard other tables complaining about the same issue. Overall, our server was kind but extremely slow and forgetful. We did not get drink refills and had to ask for silverware and condiments. One of us also ordered a cup of clam chowder which we received halfway through our meal. Lastly it felt like we were eating in a sauna. If you want decent drinks and seafood you will be in luck, but as far as service and the other food items stay away. read more

Not sure where the nasty reviews are coming from?? The place has been redone, nice, new and clean!! The staff, from the bar tenders to the wait staff are all awesome!! The food is fabulous, as Steve has a couple of awesome cooks working performing their magic in the kitchen (nothing is micro-waved!) Fresh home made french fries that can't be beat...and don't forget the seafood stuffed mushrooms too. If you're looking for meatloaf...look no further! We went to the Wheelock a few weeks ago to see a band. We got there early and had dinner. It was excellent. Our 2nd trip was a week ago, we weren't disappointed. Prime rib and lobster were great. Scallops and burgers awesome and they have real hand cut fries. Beer selection is very good too. read more

This has become our go to place on Friday night. Word is out about the good food at reasonable prices because now there can be a wait for a table. The food is very good. Not done dining but still excellent. Great dish and chips. They also do a very strong bacon cheeseburger. I would say I highly recommend but I don't want wait for a table. Hidden gem! Service was awesome, very nice waitress-bartender. Feels like the local hangout. We meet friends 1/2 between our homes and we picked this place for location! Gave it one star for the food which is very good.Great sea food,hand cut fries and great steak and cheese.The lobster special is a good deal except they are so cheap that they give you some kind of melted margarine instead of real butter.That ruins the whole meal.the bartender is an older woman with a bad attitude.She acts like she wishes you would just leave and not bother her.I think shes the owners wife.The patrons are straight out of dawn of the dead.Wont be going back again.cant get a drink when you want or keno ticket. read more

gave 2 stars food is great, best french fries home made hand cut, potato skins excellent as well, fried clams and prime rib also wonderful....But the service sucks, that one waitress tall skinny short spiky blonde hair is always high or drunk on something for sure...went there one night with friends and she gave us wrong change all night but like 4-5 dollars at a time..should be on the patrons side of the bar....I don't know why they keep her.
