This has always been a local favorite when we are visiting family in Massachusetts. It's the type of place that reminds you of Cheers "Where everybody knows your name". Don't let the rough looks scare you away. They offer a great selection of food and don't skimp on the portions! We always love coming here for lobster rolls or fried seafood that they have shipped in. Be warned that they are cash only, but they do have an ATM inside. Used to make the 40 minute drive at least 1 Friday a month for many years. The lobster roll was amazing!!! Full of fresh tender lobster and price was reasonable. Went last night for the first time in many years. Was so looking forward to the lobster roll. Surprised to see the price was almost double what it used to be and it was the most disappointing terrible lobster roll I think I have ever had. The lobster meat was frozen and it was soggy and completely tasteless. You could not have made a lobster roll any worse and believe me I have had many lobster rolls. The saving grace was the good french fries. I left close to a half a lobster roll which I never ever do and don't regret leaving it. Bring back the old owners recipe and bring your price down because that is uncalled for to have such a huge price for terrible lobster!! The more things change, the more they stay the same at JP's. While the prices have understandably creeped up, the menu offerings and decor are very familiar. No credit cards, no frills...but also little-to-no seasoning or creativity. What does that mean? Well, the burger bun is untoasted, the cheese unmelted, the beef patty unseasoned, the fries unsalted, etc. The shrimp cocktail is served with a good cocktail sauce, but don't expect a wine glass adorned with shrimp. For $0.49 each, just toss those shrimp on a piece of lettuce alongside a plastic cup of cocktail sauce. It is a total dive bar / local neighborhood joint that nobody other than locals would have ever discovered if not for internet restaurant reviews. You'll probably love it...or hate it. Almost every time I am in central Massachusetts, we end up at JP's. Although the prices used to be a lot better, JP's has stayed consistent with other restaurants in the area as the prices slowly increase. Still, the value and the taste is almost always on point here. The latest trip we took to JP's ended up in takeout - specifically the fried scallop plate and the fried clam roll, which was enough food for 3 people. In the past, we have eaten at the restaurant as well and the portions they give you for both takeout and eat in are very fair - we almost always have leftovers. Fried scallop plate - While this is a bit on the pricy side, the scallops in this plate are always fairly large and extremely sweet. The tartare sauce also has some dill in it which adds a nice touch to the sweet seafood. This particular time, however, there weren't may french fries in the platter, so that was a little disappointing. Still, this is a consistently great tasting dish and probably the one we order most times we visit JP's. Fried clam roll - You probably can't see the hot dog roll bun in this, but it's there. Since the beginning, JP's stacks its clam roll high with fried clams so much that it looks like a clam plate. Depending on the season, the bellies can be substantial, but sometimes towards the end of the season they will be smaller - you can call them and they will honestly let you know how big the bellies are though! This time, they also skimped on the fries unfortunately, but this was still a good plate. All in all, I give this a 4/5 - it's very good and we will keep on coming back, but I do wish the prices were a bit smaller or they gave more fries. But it's still a delicious place! read more

I hate, hate, hate to do this ... but I guess nothing lasts forever. This used to be the most fantastic, hidden, hole in the wall locals spot in the midst of an urban sprawl, gentrification like MA has never seen. The towns of Westborough/Northborough used to be sleepy little hamlets ... notw booming with every upscale restaurant or fake bougie chain restaurant imaginable. The town residents have gone from boat shoes with lawn mowing to boat shoes x J Crew. The prices here were the star of the show ... in the last few years they have DOUBLED. I understand that we are in a period of inflation unseen since the 1970's in the US ... BUT, JP's (despite the huge inconvenience of not taking cash in 2023) has skyrocketed prices and cut serving sizes. I no longer feel that beyond the cool unintentionally retro early/mid 1980's decor and homey atmosphere, that there is much value here. Average, decent food for the same prices as anywhere else. It makes me sad to say this. I will mention, the place is always still packed ... and likely always will be, until 'locals' are no more. They are living off their psst reputation and that will likely get them through for the next decade. Again ... the food is decent. It's all the bar food staples you grew up with in the 80's and 90's. The type of food your grandparents ate ... and the health magazines tell you not to. The prices are on par with anywhere else. You'll not find this type of dimly lit, red pleather and pine paneling anywhere in MA. It's a time warp from the 1980s. For those who grew up in the 80's and watched all their childhood spots modernize or turn into condos or offices ... this will give you that same feeling ET had when he said 'Phone Home'. It's a warm connection that still exists to your past in a new strange and unfamiliar world that you find yourself immersed in. The lobster roll used to be $17 only 5 years ago and was as big as a Nerf football packed with chunks of tail and claw meat. Now, its 1/3 of the size, $10 more and contains smaller pieces of chopped claw meat and the 'spindle' filler scraped from the legs and body by machines. This lobster roll of 2023 is nothing at all like the one from 5 years ago. I ate my last one the other night. The appetizers are fairly similar ... maybe 10 - 15% smaller. Frozen, bagged and fried. Satisfying and go good with a beer or four. The steak ... meh. A bit fatty and any entree with a salad now will cost you $2 more (not printed on the menu but an added charge posted on the wall). The cole slaw is runny and mostly mayonnaise. The fries are bagged and underseasoned. The burger ... mostly bun, greasy ... but tasty. Scallops are actually the star of the show. Big portion and large scallops. The new 'Market Pricing' is about what you'd pay on Cape Cod over the summer. There are no 'deals' to be had here, anymore for being landlocked. Overall, we will come back. It's annoying to find an ATM before coming. They have one there but you may as well just hand all your info right over to the dark web and save yourself the time vs. using tiny non-branded ATMs in dark corners of restaurants. Bottom line ... this place has been around since the 80's. It's very crowded. Lots of regulars. And it will be here in 20 years. I heard something about new ownership. If true, I'd believe it. Aside from the decor, its not much like the spot we used to go twice a week for decades. PS ... I hate writing this review. read more

I know ownership has changed - but our recent visit showed no difference in the fast friendly service we always have received, the strong cocktails, and the quality of the food. Yes - prices have gone up everywhere on everything and it's completely unreasonable to think the $17 lobster roll would be a forever thing. What I can say is that the portion and quality was exactly as I remember - and it's definitely still a deal at $26 (note they now use market price, this happened to be the price the night we went). This place is a local "hidden gem". Food is fresh, well prepared and delivered by friendly and professional servers. Come on in ! One of the best "dive" restaurants I have been in. The prices are good and the portions are large. The interior is dark and small with a fairly large bar area. We were seated promptly and the service was attentive and prompt. I always visit when in the Farmington area because of the incredible food, the size of the portions and the service. They only accept cash but another plus is the ATM on premise that only charges 50 cents for a withdrawal. I would go there just to use the ATM, most in the area are 3 to 4 bucks . read more

There was at least an entire lobster on top of a large salad. It is delicious. I know they lose money on this dish. They also have great broiled bay scallops. The service is typical bar service, they are good but not super attentive. The bar is lined with locals. The staff and locals were really friendly giving us recommendations for the rest of our stay. I've been a long time patron of JP'S Restaurant. Going back to when they first opened. Since ownership has changed hands I've been back approx 6 or more times. I'd heard complaints that things were not the same as far as quality of the food. I was beginning to agree with the rumors as the last couple of times visiting JP'S. The quality and portions were not up to the standards the new owners had originally served upon taking over the business. On 7-28-23 I and 4 others arrived at 6:00pm. The restaurant was busy as usual at this time of day. My name was taken and we were seated approx 15 minutes later. Sonya our waitress took our drink order and returned with them a short time later. Appetizers were ordered. Clam chowder, wing dings, and mozzarella sticks. All arrived within 7-8 minutes. All arrived hot and properly cooked. The clam chowder was semi-thick and had a good clam chowder flavor. Maybe not the best chowder I've had but was certainly acceptable for a restaurant in central Mass. 3 of us ordered the Fried Scallop Plate. One had the Lobster Salad and the last one had the Chicken Parm. Our ordered arrived in approx. 10 minutes of ordering which was surprisingly fast considering the amount of people in the restaurant. My major interest in the food quality was with the lobster salad and the fried Scallops as I had seen someone complain on Facebook about the Lobster Roll they had gotten when ordering takeout. The photo they included was less then appetizing. The scallops I had gotten previously were not up to the standards I was used to in their quality and quantity. I'm pleased to say that when the food arrived it was back to the old standards. The lobster salad consisted of a large portion of lobster and mayo on a bed of lettuce. See pic. The scallop plate had a generous portion of 12-14 large fried sea scallops. Tender and not over done. I'm sorry to say but I don't know the exact prices of the individual meals as the scallops and lobster salad were marked market price on the menu and I forgot to check the bill. The bill included 4 beers, a strawberry Daiquiri,ice tea and a Pepsi. The total was $173.00 and some change. This averaged out to $34.60 per person before tip. I'm not sure if my past couple mediocre experiences were just a fluke or the restaurant returned to the formula that has worked for so many years. A quality meal and more than ample portions has worked well in the past. People more then ever realize the costs of food have risen dramatically. Cutting corners to maintain a lower price eventually ends badly. It appears JP's is back on track and serving food that made it a central Mass favorite for years. read more

My daughter's former teammate found this place because it was close to the ice rink they were playing at in the beantown tournament. When we pulled up, it was one of the sketchiest looking restaurants in the strip mall which was very old. We almost left because it didn't look like anyone was there either. When we walked in, everything about it nailed the dive bar stereotype. Old booths with red vinyl seating, wood paneling, nothing has ever been updated, and to make the stereotype complete, old Boston sports pictures all over and "Cash Only"signs as you walk in. As soon as the waitress brought us our free popcorn in a wooden bowl, we knew we hit the jackpot! There were 4 of us and we all ordered the lobster roll which is 10oz on a piece of bread. Within 5 minutes or less of us ordering, our sandwiches were delivered which was impressive. Yes it's a simple dish, but we were just down south and it's a whole nother world down there when it comes to quick service. Go to any Bojangles once and you'll know what I'm talking about. Basically if you order a biscuit that's sitting in the hot holding case in front of you, it will still take 15 minutes to get your biscuit after you listen to the 20 employees argue with each other over who has to put the biscuit in the bag. But this isn't biscuit talk so I'm moving on... The bread wasn't special like some places grill theirs and use thick bread or whatever, but the quality of the lobster and large chucks of meat on the sandwich was perfect. The way we travel around the area is based on searching for "lobster roll" and we all agreed this one was one of the best ones we had in the couple days we've been here. The coleslaw was fantastic too, as I'm a coleslaw connoisseur and it's very easy to find crappy coleslaw these days. The waitress was super friendly and told us she's been working there for 46 years! Firstly, im not a local, I have family here and I always come here when I visit. Im in my mid 20's and remember coming here as a kid. We ordered food to go and it was as great as I remember it! I only ordered the lobster roll and THEY ARE MASSIVE!! The roll is easily 60% lobster and 40% bread. The lobster itself was soooo good. Used to go here all the time before Covid. Have only been there a couple of times since and it was OK but went there the other day and ordered the chicken supreme. What a mistake!! Terrible. A one and done for me. We asked if the calamari was fresh and not frozen, and they said fresh. We got calamari that was so rubbery it might as well be labeled tendon on the menu. The bun on my buffalo chicken sandwich was falling apart before I could even put it in my mouth. That same sandwich was strange in that it was a grilled chicken and not fried and lacked any flavor. Even the fries lacked any flavor, which is a first for me. I had to drown them in ketchup and salt. My father-in-law's steak also lacked any flavor and he had to bust out the A1 sauce, which he hasn't done in years. The climax of this wonderful experience was getting the check only to realize they only take cash. However, they do have an ATM (w/fee) available for your convenience. What's the takeaway (not takeout)? When a restaurant is so full of senior citizens that you think they're filming a remake of the movie Cocoon, don't expect the food to have any flavor. read more

This pub rocks in many delicious ways! Close to my hotel, my last business trip to the Westborough/Boston area took me to JP's Restaurant Pub. Located in a strip mall type environs, this is a smallish pub you'd find in New England, draped with nice homey woods, comfy and chill. Yelp led me here, a place where locals meet up snacking on popcorn bowls while enjoying beer, drinks and pub food. But wait, there is a jewel of a find here: The lobster roll. A lobster roll? In a pub in Westborough? Hmmmm, piqued. Dinner? I walked in around 6pm and snagged the last table. Score. Woweth, 15 minutes later, there was a wait. My server who was the most helpful lady recommended other dishes that are popular. She was so busy, she was super kind to have listed them for me. I mentioned, "I came here for the lobster roll." She threw back a familiar smile in affirmation that I'm not the only eater who's quested for this dish here. She replied, "Coming right up." So, I ordered the recommended appetizer, buffalo boneless chicken and that was excellent, definitely a huge order (geesh Louise, people eat large portions here LOL) and took the rest ToGo. Then THE lobster roll came. OMFG, that was the largest lobster roll this world has ever given me. It was heaped, it was replete with lobster chunks, the littlest amount of mayo and veggies about 10%, 90% lobster. Since this is a cold lobster roll, the meat was firm and meaty compared to a warm lobster roll. And the price? $17.99 "Git outta heeyah!!!!!" At the end of the meal, my server delivered the check with another affirmative quip and a smile, "You'll be back". She wan't lyin'. I returned twice. My wife and I went to JP`s Restaurant last week, hadn't been there in years. I ordered fried clams, it was good. My wife ordered country chicken. When it arrived, the chicken appeared to be a processed chicken paddy, the gravy appeared to be jarred gravy and the beans appeared to from a can. I read about this place on yelp ahead of time. It had decent reviews so I went to check it out since I was in the area. It was in a small strip mall and the front of this resturant was sort of nondescript. When we went inside this place had this kind of old school pub vibe with the dark wood and booths and tables. After we were seated our waitress brought us a bowl of fresh popcorn (who needs bread), our menu's plus told us their specials for the day all in one whole swoop, it was great. I ordered their fried tortellini as an appetizer with a tomato sauce dip. For our entree we had their lobster roll and fried clams (whole fried clam belly). Everything came out pretty quickly. You really get a generous amount of food. They straight out offer delicious food at reasonable prices. They don't accept credit cards but they have an ATM in the back. Since this place can get really busy. I am rarely in this area and when I am I don't have a lot of time. I asked about takeout but was told unfortunately they don't do that anymore because the kitchen gets too crazy :-( The next time I come to this area again this is my to go place for lobster rolls plus there were a few other dishes I want to try too. read more

Not as good as it once was...I am not a fan of sitting at the 2-seat tables along the bar wall, but ended up there to avoid a wait. The waitresses running up & back the isle is obnoxious. People at the bar should not be allowed to stand along the wall and hang over you while you eat - put up some plexi glass! Also bar patrons sit at a stool at the bar or go wait somewhere else for a seat. The wait staff should be using that isle! Food is excellent never had a bad meal. What a gem! Hole in the wall, old school place. The prices are great and the food is simple but on point. We ordered the chicken tenders for an app. Fresh and not the flat frozen kind a lot of places serve. Big portion. Salad with a great dressing, special of the day chicken kabob and a cheeseburger.
