I've had Where Ya At Matt a handful of times. I first caught wind of the food truck after I saw coworkers carrying around white paper bags stuffed with powder-sugar coated pillows of goodness (beignets), so I decided to check it out.
The first time I went there I ordered a Peacemakers' Po Boy. The meat was crunchy and juicy, it was a very texture contrast to the bread that was soft and light. The flavors were good; however, there was a lot of mayonnaise and I loathe mayo, so I now know that Po Boys aren't for me. If you're looking for someone to give a good Po Boy review, I'm probably not your guy because I am not the biggest fan of mayo. That being said, it did taste good.
The beignets are really good. They're light, fluffy, and airy. There's a light crunchy to them (because they're fried dough), but it's like eating fried pillows. There is about a pound of powder sugar in the bag to accompany the beignets and it definitely provides the right about of sweetness for it. Without powdered sugar it's like eating a plain doughnut, but with powder sugar it's very, very good and addicting. Also, be prepared to get powder sugar everywhere because it's nearly impossible to eat these without making a mess - if you're eating them the right way (with lots of powdered sugar).
Because of the mayo and the revelation that Po Boys aren't for me, I was content on not going back unless I wanted beignets, that was until a dreary rainy day where I forgot my lunch.
I went out to the food trucks, saw that there was gumbo and decided to give it a try. Wow... and I mean wow! The gumbo is incredibly good.
I've had a lot of gumbo (granted only in Seattle) and I've not come across any that are as good as this (though Restaurant Roux is pretty good). I'm not 100 percent sure what's in the gumbo, but from what I can gather there's the "holy trinity" (onions, celery, and bell peppers), as well as chicken, andouille sausage, green onions, rice, and I'm not sure what other ingredients and spicers are in there. What do I do know is that it hits you in the mouth with such great bursts of flavor. (This gumbo provides me with such great joy). There's a nice soft kick of heat to it, maybe from cayenne, that adds really nice depth to the it. The sausage also has a little kick to it as well and the chicken balances it out by being a very mild flavor. The rice just soaks up the broth gumbo and is a nice texture addition. It's stupidly good. If I could fill up a bathtub with the gumbo and bathe in it I would. I would go on a game show, submerge myself, and eat my way out if I had to - it's that good. I'm not going to say it's my absolute favorite thing to eat, but I'm also not going to say it isn't.
The cornbread is good, taste like normal cornbread. Because it's nothing special, I probably wouldn't buy it again. I'd probably want twice the amount of corn bread at the price it's sold for.
I've also tried the jambalaya as well. It's pretty good. It's one of the better jambalaya's that I've had. It's got good flavor, similar to the gumbo, but it's less soupy and (If I remember correctly) has shrimp which is a nice addition/flavor change up.
Anyway - get the gumbo and if you don't mind mayo get a Po Boy too, because they are good. Where Ya At Matt is one of my favorite food trucks that I've had the pleasure of eating at. read more
