Flower Mound's River Walk may provide a picturesque backdrop for Whiskey & Smoke but this place is still more hidden than gem. In other words, you'd never catch a glimpse of it by simply driving through town (thank goodness for Google maps!) and even many of the locals are unaware of its existence. We did manage to find it though, with hopes that the food would be worth the effort it took to get there. My husband and I both started with caesar salads. Other than being a little heavy on the dressing, they tasted ok. The pecan crusted salmon and mac & cheese were next for me. The coating on the salmon tasted like the same stuff a Thanksgiving sweet potato casserole is topped with. Unfortunately, that's the one thing I never touch because I'm just not a fan of the flavors. Unlike the salmon and salad, there was nothing objectionable about the mac & cheese. My husband ordered a filet that arrived really cold and underdone. It was closer to mooing than medium rare like he requested! Even after they took it back to the kitchen to cook it some more, it came back pretty raw. The chocolate cake we had for dessert was probably the best part of the meal. It was so rich and decadent that we didn't even miss the raspberry sauce (I assumed they purposefully left it out since we got it to go). Considering that the management here has opened and closed so many different restaurants in this same spot, you would think that they would be experts by now at running a successful establishment. But for some reason, they continue to put out the kind of lackluster food that can be found for a lower price at a major chain. After wanting try this place for a while, the stars finally aligned. Whiskey & Smoke showed off fantastic service and a terrific Riverwalk vibe with their outdoor seating. The food here is not as expensive as I'd heard, and it was delicious. Try the smoked chicken and jalapeño cheddar sausage - nothing was dried out, all of it was fresh. The green beans were sautéed with garlic, and the elote was seasoned really well. The star of the plate was the smoky, rich flavor of the barbecue sauce. The bartender may have been having an off night; the martini was icy but oddly bland, and the old fashioned was OK but not great. read more

My husband and I went early one rainy Friday. The employees were busy setting up, but they welcomed us in. We sat at the bar. The bartender was very nice and we enjoyed talking to him about their bar selection and cocktails. The Southern Gentleman was one of the best cocktails I have ever had. Bless your Heart was also good. The manager/owner (?) asked if we would like to try their special (his) mother's meatloaf. We really enjoyed it. We also have the Burnt End sliders. I'm all about trying to support local small businesses! This led me to check out Whiskey & Smoke. I went during happy hour to grab a quick bite to eat and satisfy my occasional craving for BBQ. My server was the bartender named A.Z. She was great! I ordered an Elite Lite 8 beer on draft. She gave it to me about 90% full and said the keg was empty and there was no more left. I tasted the beer and it was NOT good at all. She gladly took it back and I ordered a Miller Lite bottle. For my dinner, I ordered the two meat platter with brisket (wet) and jalapeño cheddar sausage. My sides were refried beans, and elote (Mexican cream corn). Brisket: Dry and lean is all I can say. Not good. It lacked a smoky taste. If your brisket isn't on point in TX that's a big deal to me. It's like going to a Mexican restaurant and their salsa isn't good. If you can't get that right, I won't be back. Jalapeño cheddar sausage was great with lots of flavor! The sides were acceptable and great taste. Now for the atmosphere...the restaurant is decorated nicely with lots of spare room to grow. However, there was an overwhelming smell of sewage that I couldn't get past. I'm going to give them some time to get things worked out. This location is a tough one that has seen other restaurants fail. I hope they make it. Great atmosphere and hopping. Might be the new place to be on Thursday nights! They got some ribeyes from Clayton over at flurry's and came out fantastic. Best $25 steak in town. Salad, two sides, then a cobbler dessert. Heavenly! Mine came out great. You can order either filet for $20 or ribeye $25. They don't do happy hour Thursdays which makes sense to make up a little from the steak deal. But steaks for two and a couple drinks be right at $100. They make it sous vide and then flavor on the pan. Good stuff. I'd definitely try the cole slaw. Had an add-on of mushrooms and was a good addition for $3. read more

Walked into the place and it is very nice, comfy and welcoming. We had never been to the River Walk area of Flower Mound so we thought we would give it a try. We ordered the brisket nachos. There was plenty! The smoke on the shaved brisket was outstanding! Very flavorful! The corn on the it threw me off. The actual chips are made in house and are light and lightly seasoned. The menu is limited right now due to a change in ownership. They are rebuilding the menu, but I must say that their fries are excellent. In spite of the limited menu, everything they do have on is very good and service is equally outstanding; great atmosphere right on the Riverwalk near other shops, bars, restaurants and good site seeing. This was such a good and then a little less good visit (not "bad"). First, the atmosphere has such great potential. Nice patio overlooking the Riverwalk, the inside is nicely appointed and has a good dance floor and stage for entertainment, and the bar is welcoming. It was a little odd to arrive on a weeknight at prime dinner time (6 PM) and to be only one of about three parties seated for dinner. Nathan, our server, couldn't have been nicer. Overall good energy, and very considerate and attentive. We ordered a couple drinks and I ordered the whiskey smoke which its description was a great rye whiskey, and a candied bacon and maple syrup infusion. There's some photos on their website, but when it arrived, it actually looked like a sad leftover piece of bacon (not candied) floating in my drink with a touch of bacon grease to stick it to the rim. Ewe. The whiskey itself was still good, but it wasn't not worth $15. The food was actually pretty darn good. I'd give it 4.5 to 5 stars if it was solely based on that... We ordered a pecan crusted salmon, some of their nachos and stuffed jalapeños and shared amongst the two of us. All of it was great. The jalapeños were big and had perfect kick to them. The fish had a great crust, was a good portion, and perfectly cooked. Wednesday night had line dancing lessons and it seemed from one second to the next, a decent amount of people turned out. The crowd of about 10 or so people was good and by the time we left, there were a little more people in the bar area, but not what I would still expect for an average weekday dinner time. Again, the venue is great and so hopefully it was an off night. We tried to ordered a dessert and were told that they were out of two of the desserts listed on the menu. Later another server came by and said they actually had the desserts, they were just "hidden" so there was just confusion originally. Kinda weird. We passed. So breaking it down: food, excellent. Bar, below average; service and atmosphere, great. Needs more customers to make it feel like a destination...definitely. Overall, despite a couple of the hiccups, I would say give it a try and tell your friends. read more

Well... it's beautiful - fancy barbecue atmosphere, but you receive the food on metal and butcher paper, which is odd. I know they re-used a fancier Tex-Mex space, but the atmosphere makes you feel under dressed in Jeans and a tee, but right at home with the served-meal presentation. The food is good. It's not the best ever, but it is tasty. It's expensive for what it is, though. The price matches the atmosphere, but not the execution. Service was great! We had a bit of a a hiccup with an Old Fashioned that was corrected right away. I know they're fairly new, so I'll give them another try soon to see how they're doing. read more

Found this place based on a Facebook sponsored ad saying they had comedy night every Tuesday so went to check it out. Well, turns out the staff said it was their first Tuesday open in a long time. Everything around it was closed so guessing the area is only opened on weekends. I did not get to try the food but hoping I do go back for steak night on Thursdays I believe. More to come on the food I guess. lol. The place itself seemed very spacious and very nice. This place truly has potential but as of right now it did not stand out but I am willing to give it another try as I do believe there is some true potential. Been here twice now. The steak night I went to was OK - probably 3 stars. This recent visit - 2 stars. Had the BBQ plate - ribs and brisket - both bad. Whatever came with it was bad too. I really like the atmosphere, and I love that it's not as pretentious as some other Flower Mound restaurants. We were invited by friends who made a reservation at Underdogs celebrating retirement. Ironically, the restaurant was closed (despite being able to make a reservation on line) but a man directed us to Whiskey and Smoke and said it was basically the same because they are under the same management. (Spoiler alert, it's not). Whiskey and Smoke had a 'kitchens closed but the bar is open' sign and directed customers to the next place which had 'Lone Star Prime' as their logo but I cannot seem to find any reference to them on any search engine. To be honest, I have no idea if we were at Whiskey and Smoke or Lone Star Prime as they seemed to interchange them because they apparently all have the same management. The place was busy but enjoyable. Until the service began. Our waitress was out of her league and had no idea what was going on. We ordered mainly waters, 2 teas and 2 Pinot Noir's for drinks. I've never seen a waitress bring out drinks 2 at a time. Most places have trays. Apparently not here. She brought us white wine. When we told her we ordered Pinot noir, she said, 'Oh no, you ordered Pinot'. It wasn't a Pinot Grigio and in fact was a Sauvignon blanc which leaves me wondering if she up-charged us. The menu was small and basic with tons of errors on it. Like literally listing 'Crispy Chicken Sandwich' then 'Crispy Chicken Sandwich' as the next entry. Despite the limited menu, she messed up our orders and delivered food late. The tea tasted chemical, not brewed. The French onion soup was cool and basically Lipton onion soup mix with a piece of bread and some cheese on top. The mozzarella sticks were bland. I will say that the french fries are actually quite good. The Cobb salad was good too but you have to work hard to screw up salad. They also had live music and the singer was actually pretty good until he started talking about how he was the one with the microphone so he could say whatever he wanted. Of course he informed us that he was the best thing since sliced bread and all that. To be honest, I really stopped listening to him talking and only made mental notes of whose cover songs he was singing. But it was hard to miss it when he started making derogatory comments about women and their periods as well as a comment about "Negroes' and again passed this off as it was his right to say anything offensive that he wanted to. He then said something very confusing about Jeffrey Epstein and the number 99. We honestly have no idea what he was talking about and were discussing amongst ourselves as to what the reference meant. We were close enough to the singer so he could've overheard our discussion about what does Jeffrey Epstein and 99 mean. He then stated that the next song was "going to trigger people' which we were happy to leave at that point. When we got home and my wife looked at the bill and she informed me that we ended up paying for things ordered but not delivered including a salad that the waitress blew off when she was asked about it. So my rating is overall a 1. The atmosphere and sitting outside was nice, but the limited menu with multiple errors in it, the waitress not knowing the menu, messing up the order, having to ask repeatedly for ordered items, not delivering items that were ordered, telling us that a restaurant does not have a Pinot Noir, so, basically lying to us as if we're stupid and the singer, who apparently felt like he could say anything offensive thing he wanted, regardless of context, as though his objective was too offended as many people as possible. This restaurant apparently is new and does not have a full up and running kitchen yet. I would be interested to see if it can do better but the overall experience really left a sour taste in our mouths. As for the singer, I wish I knew his name but it's probably better not to. If you go, expect inexperienced staff who don't know their menu, don't expect to get what you ordered, expect to pay for things you did not order and if it's music night, you may end up hearing someone's opinion whether you want to or not. For all the hype that the Cross Timbers Gazette made for this place, it was really disappointing. If this place doesn't shape up, I can see why the River Walk is struggling to attract customers and new businesses. read more

Wanted to try this place out. It was okay. I am giving them a four because of their service. We really felt taken care of and our server has friendly, attentive, and hospitable. The food was average. We had the following: Brisket - okay. The bark had a charred flavor. While fatty, the meat was dry. Turkey - did not have much of a smoked flavor. Tasted like roasted turkey. Was a little on the dry side Chicken - was moist and tender, but skin had a peculiar flavor. Potato salad - very liquid. Like a little more solidity, but my preference. Flavor too bitter and not balanced. Mexican street corn - very small portion. Other sides were sharable, the corn was too small for a shared side. Over priced for the quantity. Collard greens - they were average. Like my greens a little warmer. Served in cast iron bowl, just need to heat bowl more. Wile the decor and dining experience were nice for the area, do not think it fit with the cuisine being served. Will try them again and will try a different selection of meats to see if our selections missed the mark. While our server was friendly, no other engagement from other staff that was on the floor. Had dinner here with another couple last night. First and last time for all of us. This was a really unpleasant experience. The service was non-existent. Server took our orders and she brought the bill over an hour later; no opportunity for drink orders. The guy bringing the food out brought the appetizer salads and entrees at the same time. After a very long wait. It didn't all fit on the table. The little salad dressing container wasn't even half full. The steaks were room temperature and the sides were cold and dry. Seemed like it had all been sitting for a while. The medium-rare steaks were well-done. There wasn't anybody to tell that we didn't like the food or experience. I took my dinner home and warmed it up; two stars because it was good when it was hot. It wasn't busy at all; this place is just awful, really wish we hadn't gone. read more

I had the half pound brisket that was just melting in your mouth, I had the sweet potato hash with extra maple syrup that is to die for, the potato salad is amazing, and the lollipop wings are absolutely amazing! We dined at Whiskey & Smoke on 8/2 and I have to say that we won't be back anytime soon. Portion size on the 3 meat platter was small, food was cold and the brisket was dry and like you were eating beef jerky. My sister in law ordered a chicken cesar and mentioned that the chicken tasted like it was from Costco. A few bites later, she was met with bones and cartridge from the chicken. They clearly had shredded a whole chicken and just thrown the salad together. It's sad as the place has potential, but unless changes are made....this business will continue to suffer read more

The old fashion was great, the atmosphere was good. The food was horrible. The green beans were served in a cold cast iron skillet but made to look like they were made in it. And they were way under cooked. The double bone pork chop had to be made from a new born pig it was so small. The sausage was cold and had no smoke at all. The corn on the cob for $5 was barely a half of a cob. The BBQ sauce was literally straight from the fridge. 3 drinks and 2 meals was $120 and was all cold except for the baby piglet. I'll go back to listen to music and drink an old fashion, but I will order pizza from Pie Hole next door. The bar tender was very nice and tipped well. read more

Went with a friend to have a couple drinks for my Birthday 09/22. The cocktails were good and the atmosphere at the restaurant is nice. They have a nice outdoor patio that overlooks the riverwalk. However, that is pretty much were it ends for this place. We decided to order some early dinner, my friend ordered the Brisket Nachos and I ordered a 2 meat BBQ plate (1/2 ribs and 1/2 brisket). During our 20 min wait for our food to arrive, buddy gets a call, and we had to leave. We then asked our waitress for our meals to go. Neither my friend or I looked at our orders until we got home an hour later. When I opened my order, I couldn't believe my eyes, the ribs were hard and crusty like if they'd been sitting in dehydrator, no joke. And though the brisket was tender, it was dry. Very disappointing for a first time visit and last. I wish I had taken photo, but I just threw the order in the trash. read more

Ya'll this place is the bomb diggity!!!!! So good omg I cannot tell you how amazing the steaks were. We came up from Wichita to go to a wedding and needed to find a place to eat for dinner. This place is right on the water right by our hotel ( Home 2 Suites ) so we walked here. Our waitress ( Stephanie) was awesome and she explained that they had just opened in September. We had the filet with a side of street corn, the baked beans and mashed potatoes oh and a salad lol, We also had a few drinks Skip had the Whisky and smoke it came with a piece of bacon that was like candy. It was like an Old Fashioned but better, I had the Paper Plane and it was delicious. The atmosphere here is so awesome. We are very very pleasantly pleased. Just moved to area and me and buddy wanted BarBQ. I'm used to Rudy's and this place failed in comparison . I will say maybe dining in would be a different experience but DEFINITELY don't pick up your order. Guy who took offer had zero clue how to put order in. It legitimately took 15 minutes and I had to tell him to give me lots of pickles and onions 3 seperate occasions. The food was very pricey. $65 for pound of sausage (they didn't even have regular, only black pepper and jalappeno) and pound of brisket with beans and potato o salad. Came out in the rain to see the dueling pianos tonight. Was excited to give Whiskey and Smoke a try. Couldn't get service from the bar. There were two bartenders. One was new. The experienced bar tender was too busy sitting and drinking with the band to help out to get drinks out to patrons. Asked to talk to the manager, the 2nd bartender came over who was NOT the manager to talk to us. Left before the piano guys even started. When we ask to speak to a manager, I would expect a restaurant to get the manager not the bartender. The manager was somewhere else. The couple beside us sent their coffee back because it was cold. Not a good look. Pretty frustrating. The riverwalk restaurants have not been the best and won't be going back. Too many great places to spend our money. read more
