Didn't actually get to try. We pulled up about an hour and 20 minutes before closing. Yelp said it was still open for food. The lady who was sweeping the ground started looking at us weirdly, almost in a rude way, and kept staring until we got out and quickly said that the food is closed for the night. Very strange concept for a hang out... inside a convenient store. But my husband and I frequent the Whistle Stop quite often. They have TVs to watch the game, pints of beer, even homemade sandwiches! What's not to like?! WS always has great beers on tap, and a variety of styles which can appeal to anyone! If you don't find a beer you like (which would be difficult) they have coolers full of single beers. If you drink them on site, they do charge a fee of $2 to open it for you. We always drink pints there, and then shop for some to take home. Always like to keep our beer fridge stocked with rare beers, or ones that are harder to get! Best local spot for a variety of beer- I really am into their selection they have tons of local brews. They also have a really great deli and lots of delicious sandwiches. The owners are in there often very kind people definitely a local business to keep on your radar and support. Came in here for some sandwiches after the park with the kids and wow is it a great find. Walking into the shop it reminds me of a convenience store but everywhere you look are beers and cigars. There is a little counter area for sandwiches and boy do they make a mean sandwich. They can do custom made sandwiches or you can opt for one of their menued ones. I opted for the turkey avocado and it was da bomb. Loaded with quality turkey (they use Boars Head which is good quality) and havarti with fresh lettuce, tomato and onions. The lettuce is green leafy Romain and not the cheap white iceberg variety. Do note the sandwich comes with mayo and a whole grain/Dijon mustard so let them know if you don't want sauce. You can order a half sandwich or a whole (whole is definitely sharable). It comes with a bag of chips. My wife and I each grabbed a whole sandwich and both came out to just over $17. That is a good deal! And the quality you get beats nice sit down joints. read more

I don't know that I would say this one stands out, but they DO have 24 taps and you can get growlers to go of different local and west coast beers. Think "Beer Drive-In" peeps. Pull up to the rarely-busy parking lot and you might expect to see the cashier roll out of the store with a tray of beer samples, roller derby style. They might not converse with you as they smash into your car window with the cork-topped tray, but that's okay because the selection will be phenomenal. So who cares if they don't ask you how your day is going? You're about to get your buzz on! I came up with this ridiculous visual because given its location, I'm guessing that most people will drive their vehicle to pick up that hard-to-find microbrew or to have a drink in the store. I guess you could walk there, which would be even better, but exercise caution when crossing in front of the two entrances to Applebees and Safeway. Most people leaving those establishments may have realized they got taken on beer selection and prices, and they might do a burnout and run you over. Back to the store. As you walk past the well-stocked cooler, you'll notice the "tap nook." Do you like these names I come up with? Sure you do. The Tap Nook is an area in the store where you can get a good beer for $3 or so, drink it right there, and NOT tip anyone. Did you copy that? They don't even have those receipts with "Tip ______" on them. I always feel guilty when I see those. Don't you? 3 stars right there. In summary, you can grab a bar stool seat and sit back and watch people buy crap they don't need. It's a good people-watching spot and folks will probably stare at you as you sip a big frothy beer in a convenience store, which is so non-PC. But don't expect to share life stories with the employees. They seem to be rather taciturn. The fourth star was earned by risk-taking on the part of the store owners to open a tap nook, the well-stocked beer cooler, and consideration of wearing roller skates in the future. read more

On a personal note, I live about 2 minutes from this establishment. Let me say...it is far from your standard Deli. I have been gladly visiting the Whistle Stop for nearly 15 years now... However...About 3 years ago, a Safeway opened-up right next door... Therefore, the Whistle Stop decided to choose a different business strategy in order to survive...BEER was their brilliant choice. They now offer an abundance of bottles at great prices; multiple, "Pick-ur-own-6-Pack" options...and most importantly...Nearly 30 Beers on Tap for Growler Fills. They offer everything from, "DOGFISH 90 Min. IPA"...to local..."Big 'E' Scotch Ale". Their prices are completely reasonable. They offer a "Request-Sheet" (which I've gladly used about a dozen times) in order to request new beers. (soon to come: "DOGFISH 120min. IPA", on-tap...awesome) All I can say is the 'Whistle Stop' is no longer a standard 'delicatessen'. I have been more than impressed in their commitment to Craft Beer over the past two years. Anyone who knows beer, also knows the amount of energy and cost to maintain nearly 30 taps from local, and rare micro-breweries. It also sells cigars so I can believe, at one time, that people would have enjoyed a beer and cigar here....They fill growlers and have a nice list of beer on tap. Before I get started, I read several 5 star reviews here and it really seems to be that most people will give 5 stars to any place that has alcohol. Dive bar, dirty, cheap beer, it doesn't matter, it has beer, so it is the best place ever! It just boggles my mind how many people will give a high rating as long as alcohol is served. I went here recently with a friend who knew about it. She told me it is just a convenience store that is largely beer, prices are just ok, it is mostly to sit down and have a beer. She is right. It's a nice dive at the most. Not filthy, not upper class, just a run of the mill store that is largely beer, many taps, and tables to sit at while drinking and eating. The bottled beer is definitely higher than many other places. But since so many people gave this place 5 stars, they clearly don't care about paying for overpriced beer. Service was fine. It wasn't great or stellar, but we had no problems. Plenty of samples, water, some snacks, employee was fine with us, answered questions, very attentive. Pint prices were anywhere from $5 to $7, most being $5. This is not a fancy place to take a date, just a convenience store that sells beer and has it on tap, stop in for a short time and have a few drinks, and maybe some deli food. read more

I live just around the corner and frequent this place weekly with my wife. Usually I'm happy with the service and atmoshphere. Not tonight. They committed the unforgivable sin - the illegal pint. They charged me pint prices for 12 ounce cups. I mentioned that these were not pint glasses but the was assured that the 12 ounce cups were the same as the pint glasses.
