I'm not a big cheesecake person, but I had the pleasure of enjoying a Whistle Stop cheesecake after having dinner with BF's parents (ok, it was a day long eating extravaganza). I heard the stories before of these fabulous cheesecakes, and they did live up to my expectations!! His mom picked up a plain cheesecake with cherries on top. The texture was perfect - smooth and creamy, but not too heavy. The cherries gave just the right amount of tartness. Every bite was bliss. Purchased two half tray crumb cakes and brownies today to delivery directly to two departments. I called the order in about one hour before picking up. We were not told the cakes were frozen cakes and not completely thawed. When we delivered the cakes my coworker received a call that the cakes were ice cold and very difficult to cut through. Normally I would not make a complaint since I know things do happen. However when I made a call to clarify if the cakes were frozen prior to purchase I received an accusatory attitude from the staff. They explained it was my fault for calling order in too late. It was also my fault for not clarify if the cake was frozen. I just received a call from the owner Dan. He was arrogant and explained that he has too much to worry about and can not "hold hands" with people. I asked him to explain what he meant by "holding hands". He explained that I should have known calling in a order an hour before at a bakery that manufacturers so many baked good that the product would be frozen and need thawing. He continued to explain that my story was "far fetched" and asking "what do I want?" I was blown away by the lack of customer service and accusatory statements towards a customer that just spent a good amount of money on a large order. Needless to say I would never return back. If that is how an owner speaks to a customer then I will find a different bakery that can provide the same product with less of a headache. read more

Admittedly, I was pretty skeptical about the whole "best cheesecake on Long Island" thing, and I'm a die- hard lover of my local bakery- but wow, they aren't kidding! I finally stopped in after work one day and was super impressed by their reasonable prices and incredibly helpful and friendly staff. I tried the peanut butre chocolate cake and got a small sized plain cheesecake. I love that they have different size offerings, so I can tailor my needs to each situation. Cakes ready to buy are quite delicious. Have been purchasing cakes for holidays for years. However......be aware if you are wanting to order a "specialty cake." Went in on a Saturday morning to order a sheet cake for a baby shower 4 weeks in advance. 4 weeks! I wanted only a baby shower cake without writing. Nothing very complicated. Was met by a nice girl who informed me that although there were samples on-line, sample photos were not longer available . She called out a woman who was evidently a manager, who acted like Whistle Stop was doing me a BIG FAVOR by entertaining my request of a simple baby shower sheet cake without writing. WOW! I moved out of Long Beach in 1984 when I got married but still have family in Merrick. I was visiting my sister and was very happy to discover that the legendary Whistle Stop was still around. We brought a multi topped cheesecake and a box of assorted rugelach to her home. Do you know how frequently when you go back to a place you remember as special the actual product doesn't live up to the memory? Not the case here. Then someone gave me the Chocolate Swirl Cheesecake as a holiday gift and my life was changed forever!!! Only issue was the woman helping me at the counter. She was a little ditzy to say the least and had to ask me how to spell his name three times before finally bringing his cake out, his name is three letters and NOT difficult to spell. Unfortunately after years of being a steady customer of Whistle Stop, I am now a dissatisfied customer and will never shop there again. I purchased a cheese cake with a chocolate top. When I went to serve it, most of the chocolate top was on the side of the box. When I went back in for a refund, the worker who put the topping on, first tried to deny that it was her work. She then went on to make excuses about why it slid off. She was dismissive and did not offer a refund or replacement cake. She was not concerned about how bad it looked that the cake was a mess! my friend talked about this place for months, saying how the cheesecake was amazing, so my expectations were very high. he was finally able to buy one for me along with 2 cupcakes. my verdict? the cheesecake was solid, but not mind blowingly amazing like these reviews are stating. i've tasted homemade cheesecakes before and they were better than this, not to the point that they blew the whistle stop cheesecake out of the water, but they were marginally better than the whistle stop's in almost every category. i don't exactly understand what qualifies the whistle stop cheesecake as "the best". everything about it was tight, professional, and was obviously a refined product, but what exactly about it stood out? nothing in my book. now, i do feel like i am being slightly overly harsh, as i'm not saying i disliked the cheesecake, and there's only so much a plain cheesecake can strive to become, but I just kept eating it, trying to taste something that would elevate it from "a really solid effort" to "omg this is something special" and i just couldn't taste anything that would justify that upgrade. i also go back to my previous point that i've tasted plenty of homemade cheesecakes that were BETTER than this one. trust me and try making one at home. they are not that difficult to make. if you make it properly, I assure you you will realize in a few bites that the whistle stop cheesecake is really nothing special and that you yourself can create one just as good if not noticeably better. the cupcakes were generic and 1 grade above entenmann's quality. if i wasn't convinced that this place was overrated by the cheesecake, the cupcakes comfortably confirmed that my judgement was warranted. to be honest, if this place had a 3.5-4 star rating, i would probably give the whistle stop 3-4 stars, but this 5 star, "BEST CHEESECAKE EVER" rating is completely overblown and i had to give it 1 star to try and make people aware that this place is not as amazing as everyone says. i mean, i guess relative to the barren wasteland of good food on long island, this is a 4 star bakery. but people, if you really think this place is THAT great, you really need to bake something yourself at home and see just how "basic" this bakery is. read more

I have been going heres since I was young. This place is absolutely amazing. The cakes are out of this world, so is everything else. Its all home made and they make it right there in the shop. The prices are pretty high too but no complaints on that end. This place where it goes horribly wrong is the staff. I walked in to get a cake and some cookies and when i took a bouquet of cookie the woman charged me more money than it was displayed for. I kindly asked and a little confused with a smile laughing why she charged me more. She told me the prices changed starting today, I kindly once again explained being in Sales all my life that they can't do that. You can't display a price and tell me that day you changed it and now its this amount more. Thats one of the most horrible things you can do in a business. She told me so rudely to take it or leave it and this is what it is they can do whatever they want. I literally have spent over a grand in this place and I have never gone back since. I was so disappointed and upset by this because little did she know I recommended this place to every one I knew for cakes , etc and was so loyal to them. Now I tell every one not to go there. Ill go to stop n shop and get a cake before I ever come here again which is sad because its not the product its the staff but who would ever wanted to be treated that way.
