I stopped by this Ace Hardware to pick up a few items. I really want to support local businesses and this "Ace" Hardware seemed like a good place to go. The guy behind the counter was pleasant enough and showed me the aisles where I could find my supplies. He also assisted me in weighing some nails by the pound and packaging them for me. Overall, a decent store. Other customers were there as well, and they all seemed to know each other. Parking was a little hard to find, so I parked around the corner. I'm building something and needed a lamp cord. Rather than run to Lowe's, I figured I'd support a local business and went to Whitaker's Hardware on High Street. The guy helping me wasn't wearing a mask. I figured he forgot to put it on since there wasn't anyone else in the store at that moment. He pointed out what I needed and turned to help a customer who just walked in. I said "Don't forget your mask." He said "What about it?" I said, "You need to have a mask." He sarcastically responded, "Why?" Come on! Hundreds of people are dying every day in California and that's your attitude? You will NEVER have my business again! Just left this store , they closed 1/2 hour early. I was a little upset as I checked their hours before I left home. I could see their hours posted on the front door as well which was puzzling. Was leaving but some sloppy looking bald guy came and opened the front door and said "What's your f@#$ing problem" and proceed to tell me off , flipped me off and said "I have never seen you here before and your not even supposed to be out right now" I guess he thinks he is in charge of my life and what I need. My wife went here the other day to ask for help and told me she was received with a very hostile attitude. I went back today. I have lived here about 10 years and try to support local business. Have been here a good number of times for small items. Each time have experienced mild attitude but never minded it. Today I go on and greeted by very sarcastic demeanor and rudeness by young guy. Owner ambles over and tells me he has never seen me in the store and essentially inviting me to leave. I was asking the store for a favor but young guy seemed uninterested in helping. I was very frustrated by the attitude and expressed same at which point the younger guy completely changed his demeanor and was super helpful and kind. But really. This place seems to have a business model that says "greet customer rudely, with disdain and hostility". Irony is that the store is almost always empty. An old time Ace Hardware store where the receipt you receive says, "Since 1926". I love going to old fashioned hardware stores, and this one is a fairly well organized store unlike its nearby cousin in Somis which is charming in its disorganization. The men at Whitaker are knowledgeable about their products so that if you explain your problem, they can figure out what tools or materials you will need to fix a hardware problem or to help actualize a home project. They even have an old fashioned cookery section where you can buy candy thermometers, cast iron skillets, etc. This place is much more interesting and helpful than going to Home Depot where many of the sales clerks only know how to stock their own section, but sometimes do have not clear ideas about how to use the product. Going into a dark room in back, there are 11 antlered head of deer hanging on the wall acting as though they are the silent, perpetual guards of this vintage hardware store. Definitely a good local store to patronize since you want to circulate money in the community to keep it vibrant unlike Walmart's where the money goes straight to headquarters in Arkansas. High Street is a charming little street full of the buildings of Old Town Moorpark, and it would be a shame if all the businesses shut down due to lack of local customer support since it is in the interest of the townspeople to have vibrant centers of local commerce. read more

I am amazed at the inventory at this little store. I would say that they have exactly what I need at least 9 out of 10 times. And since they offer assistance within 10 seconds of entering the store, I am in and out with 5 minutes. It takes at least four times as long at the larger stores. And since I live in Moorpark, I can make a round trip to the store and get what I need in 15 minutes compared to well over an hour going to Simi to the larger stores This level of knowledgable service is a rarity anymore. I also believe in supporting our local small businesses but I will no longer spend my hard earned money at this store. When I built my house in Moorpark, this was the go-to hardware store for sure. But back then, it was run by the kind father, who ultimately went blind and passed away years ago. We miss him. The sons took over the store, and judging by their attitudes, hate working there. Since then, I thought maybe I did something wrong to have been treated like I was, but other people tell me the same - and the reviews here confirm it. They're just plain rude, "Customer no-service" defined! When they made a duplicate key for me - and it didn't work - I had to go back and ask for a do-over. The counter guy complained like it was my fault their machine was out of adjustment. Then he literally threw the new key across the counter at me. I'm not sure how the good reviews got here, perhaps friends or family. However the owner or whoever the guy that runs the register is not very friendly and rude. I'm sorry I had to ask you where something was located in your store. Nope. Brought in a screw to try and size match the screwdriver head I needed. They were wrapped so I brought up a 1 and asked. Guy at the counter tried to tell me they'll all work, just some are narrower. I know dude. That's why I brought the screw. Got home, needed a 2. Went back. Second, older guy helped me this time with the exchange. Tried to talk me into buying two long screwdriver heads instead of the 2-pack of short because "the short ones are for drywall". Ummm no. I think these will work just fine. For anything I use that tool for. I gave it an "oh darn, I wish my strong husband were here to tell me what's right. But I think these will be just fine." -.- He tried to tell me I'd be coming back soon, to dissuade me from the sale item. If these screwdriver heads magically reject projects other than drywall, I'll be back for sure. I don't see how a $3 difference is worth ruining your cred with the ladies. read more

Attempted to purchase several items on the shelf with price tags. Was told they were not for sale. Not sure how you can legally have items on the shelf but refuse to sell them. This may very well be racial bias on the part of the owner. Overheard them making fun of a different customer for calling them on the phone wanting to purchase something. "I'll bet they never show up to actually get it or if they do it will be in a Prius." Seriously? How is this a way to run a business. This Ace Hardware is basically a personal storage space for the owner. Nothing is for sale. They do not wish to actually assist customers. I've reported them to Ace corporate and the BBB. I almost never write reviews, but this place is so terrible that I had to. DO NOT GO HERE. I worked at a hardware store in my 20s, so I'm familiar with what it takes to run a good hardware business and have really positive associations with them, especially the mom and pop variety. This is quite literally the only exception. This place literally sucks the joy out of you. The store is a mess, the staff is standoffish and rude, and the management is even worse. On a recent trip they were even nasty to my mom, which as a decent son means I will never step through their door again. Every time I've gone in I've been treated like something on the bottom of their shoe, and their poor unkempt selection doesn't even make it worth it. Shopping here is like waiting 3 hours for a pompous waiter to bring you the steak you ordered, and then receiving a tiny piece of burnt hamburger meat instead- you go in with good expectations, but it's a terrible experience that leaves you totally unsatisfied. I actually wanted to like this place and give it a chance, but I've had enough- I don't expect smiles and rainbows all the time, but I'm not going to pay a mediocre store to treat me and my loved ones like trash. I chose to support a small business to buy a household product. Upon entering the store no employee was wearing a mask despite the fact it is a mandate in CA. I called the store back to ask him why they are not wearing masks and he stated,"We are so over masks!" Whitaker's is one of those old-time hardware stores which carries a little bit of everything. Part gardening store, part hardware, part mercantile... If the world fell into chaos tomorrow and I needed supplies to survive & defend myself from hordes of zombies - this is where I'd go. The eclectic inventory is as entertaining as it is useful. The staff, while being helpful and extremely knowledgeable can be direct and short with customers. Fair warning... I only ding this awesome old-school store one star because if you actually work for a living, their hours are horrendous. They are simply always closed whenever I drive by after work or on Sundays. I tend to feel very comfortable around tools and construction and find them to be less then helpful. However my wife went in and called them out on their behavior and now they are absolutely wonderful to her. We really want to support our Moopark High Street businesses, going out of our way to buy at our local Mom and Pop shops vs the Big Box stores. Unfortunately Whitaker Hardware just struck out on a third visit and is making it painful to support them. (Not to say that I hadn't had a successful visit prior, but going back and anticipating a good visit after three bad ones in a row, all separate in purpose, would be my stupidity). They repeatedly show little interest in customer experience or overall satisfaction. The younger staff are consistently rude/short in response, visibly ignore customers (ie. reading newspapers rather than inquiring about needs or helping), and the older gentleman acts as if there are no options to what he offers. In my last visit he stated that I couldn't buy an order elsewhere for less than advertised MSRP of $775. OK, so I asked him for details on the schedule etc for which he promised to call me back the next day. No follow up. I am not wasting any more time with him. I knew that I can buy elsewhere for less. The first alternate place I chose the next day provided much better service and is able to order/sell the same item for $600. The attitude at Whitaker seems to be arrogance and delusion that customers won't go elsewhere for some reason??? They don't realize that many customers are accommodating "them" to keep them in business. I've managed my schedule around their limited hours of operation, gone to them first even knowing there is a good chance they don't have what I need with their limited variety of supplies, and been willing to pay somewhat higher prices to keep their business alive. I have likely assumed wrongly that the "hardware" business is a struggle for Whitaker because of size and location. Now that I think about it, the only way they can get away with such poor attitudes and service is if they are making so much money, customer satisfaction isn't a factor. After the experience above, I had the opportunity to visit the new Tractor Supplies company in town, and although they didn't have every sprinkler item on my list, they were very pleasant and concerned about my wants and had better pricing than Whitaker. read more

I shop here because I want to support local stores. Depending on the day, the staff is very helpful. I would say it's the equivalent of asking your very formal uncle for advice. He's very busy and will make sure you know it. Everything you're asking him is a big inconvenience, but he'll still help you. This has been my experience with one of the older gentlemen at the store. The younger employee is helpful, but it's not like going to Home Depot where people are willing to help and troubleshoot your problem. It's true that I can get pretty much anything that I need from Amazon or another big box hardware store, but I'll keep coming back to get things quickly, without using up another Amazon box, and continue to invest in small businesses. read more

The best hardware store I have ever been to. This is the real deal. They are affiliated with ACE but are also their own entity. These guys actually know what they are talking about. If you have been to Home Depot or Lowes or Do it center, you know that 90% of the time they haven't got a clue. And their prices are also very reasonable, which honestly I was very surprised. I have always experienced great customer service here and I have been here multiple times due to remodeling my house. No they are not going to offer you a hot beverage and some crumpets but this is a hardware store. They give you honest friendly advice and a great selection of products you wouldn't even think they had. Great place. read more
