This restaurant is the epitome of flushing. The food is very affordable and among the best I've had in New York City. The spicy shrimp dumplings are to die for. They are tender, flavorful, and have the perfect amount of spice, all for a very affordable price. The service is fast and efficient, however, you might see some long lines. While you can't dine in at the restaurant, you do get a very authentic experience and great service out the window.
as someone who always finishes my food no matter how full i am, i still couldnt eat more than 3 of these wontons. the filling is tasteless, the chili oil is tasteless, and the street this is on is the worst smelling and most uncomfortable street in all of flushing. its weird that they have indoor seating but its barricaded except the small window you order out of. not sure if quality has dropped over the years but the price is not a good deal either. not a place id recommend to even my worst enemy.
Haven't visited White Bear in years. It's takeout only now, but still cash only. Went on a Sunday afternoon and there was one couple in front of us. The person at the window took their order and didn't come back to take our order until she came out with the couple's order. Didn't have to wait too long, though. Got 2 orders of the #6 (wonton with hot sauce) and 1 order of the #17 (dan dan noodles - comes with or without pork, but we got the pork). It came out to $30 total, with each dish being $10. The #6 comes with a dozen wontons. Despite the red color, the chili oil isn't spicy at all. The wontons had a thin skin and were filled with plenty of meat, with most of the flavor coming from the chili oil crisps and the pickled mustard bits. The dan dan noodles were tasty, and came with a sauce very similar to the wontons. You really can't go wrong by ordering #6 and/or #17.
White Bear is my FAV mom and pop staple in Flushing ~ they've been around for yearssss! Like back when it was still styrofoam containers, bless her. I can agree that quality went down a bit a few years ago but it's slowly been picking back up ~ the flavors are still the same homey traditional flavors I grew up eating. Chili Wontons + Dan Dan Noodles, can't go wrong with the best choice. Cash only and sometimes they'll close early if they sell out on weekends. There's no more sit down, it's just takeout from their ordering window.
We came here to try this place after hearing so many good things about it! Run by the sweetest elderly couple, they make their wontons fresh and they are deliciouss. 10/10 - $10 for 12 wontons is not bad at all considering it is made fresh! It is a hole in the wall place that has amazing food. I would definitely come back!
Got their famous hot chili oil wontons. The hot oil is relatively mild, but umami. Not as spicy as I would like. The filling is plentiful. These aren't the best spicy wontons I've had, but good to stop by on a food crawl. I definitely prefer a lighter wonton skin, and a more concentrated filling. They used to allow indoor dining, but stopped after COVID. It is takeout only. This is a cash only spot, an I would say the wontons are good to share between 2 people (especially if you're going for more food later.) worth stopping by (￣^￣)ゞ
A very nonchalant dumpling place! We almost missed this when we were walking since there were no clear signs. You order from a window and there is no seating. The lady who runs the place comes to the window, takes your order, and gives you the food. Everything is cash only. I ordered the #6 Wontons in Hot Chilli Sauce and it was delicious! The wrapper is very thin and they are generous with the filling. Everything came hot and fresh. $10 for 10 wontons. I would come again! Great if you want something fast and to take home.
*TAKE-OUT & CASH ONLY* Like most other folks here, I had to come because SO many recommended their #6 Wontons with Hot Sauce. I have to say, these wontons didn't disappoint. They were decently sized and generously packed with meat filling. The chili sauce looked spicy but surprisingly didn't taste too hot. Very balanced and delicious. The pricing is steep for about 10 wontons, but guess that's to be expected with how viral they are. Would definitely come back.
Finally made it here for a late lunch on a weekday. It's very close to the subway & not too hard to find. Passed by a few times & never realized that this was the place that's all over social media. It's on a quieter block across from a housing complex and around the corner from a small children's park. There's an "unhoused encampment" two storefronts over, but those locals seem to stick to themselves. It's also at a busy commercial intersection with lots business development across the street (bakeries, boba shops, Spot Dessert Bar) & people walking to Sky View Mall. The interesting co-habitants of NYC. There was no line & the friendly worker was on her phone/break inside and I got her attention. She spoke Mandarin & communicated in English fine. It's now a window to order from, so you need to find a seat at the park or head to Golden Shopping Mall Food Court or New York Food Court. $10 for #6 Spicy Wontons. WHICH PROVINCE is this dish from? I always wonder WHICH Chinese cuisine are these viral dumpling places from (are they all Fujianese-owned?), or are they a mash-up of different provinces, to appeal to customers? It's hard to know if this is a good representative dish of the flavors that I'm supposed to be eating. And what am I supposed to taste. NOTE: My dish came out fast and wasn't very warm. Since it was after lunch hours, it seemed like everything was premade and tossed together. Or are you supposed to eat the wontons cooler / lukewarm? Maybe make sure to ask them to heat it up. I actually took this home for dinner & reheated it. Even though the container is on the smaller side, the amount was pretty filling, maybe about 10 small wontons. The quality of the ingredients were very fresh and each wonton had a lot of scallion packed in with pork. The skins are kind of medium - thin, I'm still not a fan of dumplings and medium - thick skins. Grew up on Cantonese-style Wontons. The topping / sauce is finely chopped pickles (maybe pickled radish), scallion, ginger, sesame seeds & chili oil. The Chili Oil had NO HEAT. And I'm a person that can't eat too spicy. The dumpling filling didn't have much seasoning either overall it was fine but one note and the most pronounced flavor were the pickles. I wonder if the flavor has been dumbed down over the years because of tourism. OR is this the style of this province? Can someone clarify. Glad to support this business, but not something I'd come back for. At least for the way they made my dish, it seems kid-friendly too.
Heard that this was a great place to get good dumplings at a cheap price. Super easy to miss since it's just a window with no seating but there were other people waiting around the storefront which helped us spot it. Seemed like it was one lady manning the entire operation - taking orders, making the dumplings, everything. So it took a while but indeed they were good well-priced dumplings. They give you chili oil too which isn't spicy at all (as someone who likes spice) but it's pretty unwieldy to eat standing up so I'd come with a plan for somewhere else to eat bc eating standing up is not it
I've been coming here over the past couple decades and it's changed hands a couple times and even though I still like coming here for the classic red oil wontons although it's not what it used to be. This was my most recent visit and I found the wontons tasted like they had more dough than filling. I asked for light sauce but the flavor was still good. I think the service is not as good as it used to be. they closed indoor area and is only doing take out but it's classic hole in a wall ambience and a staple in Flushing for sure. read more
All you need to know is "one order of the #6," also known as wontons with hot sauce. It's kind of a deceitful name because they're not actually that spicy, but no matter, I'm addicted to these delicious little wonton bundles of joy. The wontons are rubbed with chili powder and other spices, drizzled with chili oil, and topped with pickled veggies, and they make such a great base for all these toppings. The combination is very flavorful and satisfying. The #6 always hits the spot whenever I'm in Flushing. Haven't tried anything else on the menu and I'm okay with that. During COVID-19 times, you can only order via their makeshift takeout window. If you're looking for a seat, you can head over to the nearby park. Or you can just stand outside and greedily scarf these down like I did. read more

Had to try out their number 6 spicy wontons after hearing so much about it. The wonton was filled with juicy pork and veggies, topped with chilis, chili oil, and green onions. It was a great value as you got 12 wontons for $8.50. Maybe I am used to Sichuan-style hong you chao shou as while I did find the wontons good, I felt that they were lacking "something" that I couldn't quite put my finger on. Nonetheless, it's definitely a must-visit if you find your way to Flushing. read more

Try: No. 6 Spicy Wontons! Why: Delicious and packed with flavor wontons! I randomly stumbled upon this hole in the wall and I'm so glad I did! I love the chili oil and crunch of the pickled veggies/scallions with each bite. The wontons were not spicy, which surprised me because of chili oil and redness. The wontons also were not super hot (temperature) where you'd burn your mouth but warm enough to savor each bite. There were probably 10-12 wontons in the bowl and was a perfect pre-lunch snack! Notes: I came on a Sunday around 11am and there were only two people in front of me. I ordered at take out counter window and wontons were done in less than 5 minutes. No outdoor seating available so I walked across the street to the park to enjoy my bowl of spicy wontons. Great cheap and quick eats in Flushing! read more
I made my second visit to this place last Saturday for a quick meal. Since the shop is very tiny, they taped the menu to the door entrance and made patrons order right at the door, so nobody has to step inside. I wanted to try their dumplings this time, but they said they don't have dumplings, so I settled for two orders of number 6 (wontons with veggies and hot sauce) again. One staff took my order and another handled the money. I don't think there was anyone else working in the front of the store. Maybe there was another worker in the kitchen because they gave me my food within minutes! I thought they would package the food in a foam box since they used to serve it in on foam plates, but they used plastic containers so it was very sturdy and easy to eat from in the car. There's a little park across the street that might have seats and tables for you to eat at. The wontons tasted just like I remembered. It wasn't very spicy... just a little hint of it. And it's pretty bland unless u eat it with the toppings, which gives a nice salty and sour taste. My boyfriend has been craving it since eating it on Saturday. read more

This place fits the hole in the wall, what a GEM! The hot oil/chili Wonton (#5 in the menu) was delicious and packed with flavors. Burst of deliciousness with every bite. A lot of popular food content creators raved about this place as a must-try and so I had to pay a visit there when I was in NYC. Honestly, it was very disappointingly salty! The texture of the wontons and the dan dan noodles were there, but the taste was not it. I had anticipated a spicy with sweet and salty flavor but what I got was pure saltiness. My friend and I had to drink water multiple times to get rid of the salt in our mouth. Not sure if we caught them at a bad day or something because I was really looking forward to this place. It wasn't even busy the day we went and we went early, like probably an hour after they opened. We even saw them making it and was super hyped to try it. I was recommended this place for must try wontons in Flushing and was very underwhelmed. Their famous wontons in hot chili sauce almost tasted like there was no filling at all and like a dough ball of layers of wrapping. I didn't care for it and probably won't be coming back with all the other amazing eats throughout flushing. Heard this spot was popular for their spicy chili wontons so we came to order some. They come with 12 pieces and for the $10 price it is pretty good. The wontons were a little bit smaller when what I'm used to, but they were pretty good! Not too spicy which is perfect! Mambo No. 6 If you're in Flushing and hungry for authentic Chinese food but not looking for a sit down. Wonton maybe? Go visit White Bear on Roosevelt by Main St Flushing. Shown in multiple YouTube influencers and TV shows. They rarely say a word. You will be ordering from a magical glory-hole-like window. I always come here. Few pro tips: 1. Bring cash 2. Look at menu prior to stepping up to glory hole. 3. Order with confidence! You'll enjoy this food. Prices has gone up a lot but still worth it. Remember you will not have seating. A bit conflicted with this place. Probably one of the most expensive wontons I ever had. The location, product nor experience can justify charging $1 a wonton. It was definitely good and chili oil was mild. Just a normal product when comparing to other places in manhattan and brooklyn chinatown. Went here for the hype. Left yearning for more. read more

Number 6 is the most popular so no. 6 what we tried - wonton with hot sauce (no soup). $9 cash only. This dish is not hot/spicy at all!!! The wontons were okay. Not much filling to them. I liked the onions on top; they gave them some flavor. It is a sizable portion. read more

Came here based on reviews and ordered #6 based on reviews. Average tasting wontons quantity for price is ok. This is an eat on the sidewalk or take to go kinda place . Given that this is in the middle of Flushing China Town and I only saw American customers I should have skipped and followed the Chinese around. Definitely obsessed with the taste of the wontons from here. I always order #6, the "Wontons W. Hot Sauce (Hot, no soup) that comes in 12 pieces of wontons. This isusually enough to make me full. I absolutely love the taste and texture of the wontons. The skin is smooth and perfect thickness for my liking. The hot sauce is probably what makes it taste that much more delicious! For 12 wontons, it costed me $6.50 before. I believe they upped the price to $7 now! It's also cash only! The place itself is extremely small and tight. 4/5 tables total with 2 seats each table. Pretty cramped I'd say so I usually order wontons to go. It doesn't exactly look appealing to stay there and I'm not exactly sure how sanitary things are there, but I rather not know than know! Regardless, the 4 stars is for the delicious taste of the wontons. If there was enough space and the appearance was more appealing, I would give it the full 5 star rating. read more

Stopped by here after hearing great things, we ordered the #6 on the menu! I had really high expectations, but was a bit underwhelmed. White Bear is a hole in the wall spot, and only does takeout. You have to place your order through a window, and they accept cash only. The #6 special comes doused with chili oil, but it did not make the wontons spicy at all. The wontons were bland, with mostly dumpling wrapper, and very little filling. The wonton tasted good, but I wished that the wonton had more filling. The portion was sizable, and it was a good snack for the 3 of us. The service was fast, and a great spot to get a good snack. But, it will probably be the one time visit for me. read more
I had really high expectations, but was underwhelmed. White Bear is literally a hole in the wall. It is only takeout. You place your order through a window. On a nice day, you can take your food to the park across the street which is exactly what I did. I ordered their signature Number 6 Special and Dan Dan Noodles. Number 6 Special: The wontons were bland. Although it's a relatively large portion, it's mostly dumpling wrapper and very little filling. The wontons are generously topped with chili pepper oil, but it wasn't spicy. Dan Dan Noodles: Just like the wontons, the noodles also tasted bland. The noodles are topped with the chili pepper oil, cucumber, and bean sprouts. Because of the chili oil in both dishes, this is all I tasted (extremely disappointing). For the same price, you can find a tasty noodle/dumpling meal at one of the many other Chinese food stalls/restaurants in Flushing. This place is seriously overrated. The staff is really friendly. They also only accept cash. As much as I wanted to like this place, I wouldn't come back. read more
Finding myself alone in downtown Flushing, slighty buzzed and feeling great after an excellent happy hour experience nearby I start considering my food options to soak up some of the alcohol in my system. After 5 years of wanting to try White Bear the stars have aligned... All the reviews are dead on about this dingy, hot, cramped space with furniture that has seen much better days decades ago. I order a #6 (Is there anything else worth while on the menu?) the man tells me to have a seat. Soon after I am handed a dense plate of 12 wontons covered in pickled vegetables, scallions, spicy power and chili oil.. I dive in.. The wontons have a nice, thin & silky wrapper around a tasty filling, but to my taste buds most of the flavor comes from the topping and chili oil. It has a nice balanced heat, but I add some of the red chili paste from the container on the table to give a bit more of kick. The spice and the warm summer night help me burn off the last of my slight buzz. Now sober, I walk back to my car ready for the ride home. I blast some Air Supply "Making Love Out of Nothing At All", singing at the top of my lungs as I enjoy a beautiful ride home on the last holiday weekend of the Summer of 2019. read more

First off - this isn't a sit down restaurant and accept cash only. Which is fine - the food was fantastic! The dumplings are what everyone wants to try and what they come for. They make them per order so it usually takes around 10 mins to prep on their end. We placed two orders and they didn't have enough so we saw the dumplings come from a packaged freezer bag to cook for our order. Overall had amazing flavor and was both satisfying and filling for me. read more
Spicy wontons here are very solid! It's $10 for 12, which is a little more expensive than other places in Flushing. It's just a window where you order, and the food came out almost instantly. The wontons are generously sized, and the skin is really nice and thin. I liked the flavor of the pork filling, as it was well seasoned and still pretty juicy. The sauce had good flavor, and was only slightly spicy. I wish there was a bit more of it though. Overall a little overhyped, but still solid. read more

LMAO at all the high ratings because I'm starting to wonder if they've ever had legitimate wontons before or whether I've just been spoiled by trips to China. Skin: white, noticeably thicker than the HK/Guangzhou styled plump wontons that you might have had. Different region, different skins. Personally, my favorite wontons are the kind where the skin becomes almost transparent after boiling. These were clearly not that. These wontons also don't have shrimp, which is fine, but their filling just sucked. Filling: bland and minimal. You can take a look below, but that's a dime sized piece of meat in there. That's not a wonton . . . place is skimping out due to popularity and that's a big no no. And fine, if the filling was good, I'd understand. But there was no taste. Toppings: here's the highlight. Keep in mind that these aren't spicy, but the crunchy bits and the pickled veggies slathered on top was really good. But good enough that I'd come back to eat another plate of wonton skin? White Bear is a one trick cheap pony. If you are here, you are eating dumplings and basically nothing else. I'm actually not a big fan of all the various versions of the dumplings here so I'm just here for the wontons. I find other versions they have to be too cabbage-y, too chive-y/onion-y, lacking in spices or flavor. I've tried buying the frozen ones to make at home and it's definitely not the same as having it made for you. The best part of these dumplings are the scallions, spicy oil, preserved veggie toppings that go on top when they are made in house. Aside from that, the dumplings are not really thin nor are they made with egg wrappers, which is what I prefer. If you visit, get the #6 and get it spicy. Restaurant seating redefines minimalistic and the in house tables are two tops, so don't bring a group expecting to sit inside. There aren't many of the two tops, in total there may be five or six. There really isn't anywhere to stand without bumping into someone else or standing on top of someone who is sitting down eating. Bare minimum also defines the service. Get your order to go and eat them quickly. read more

Worth the hype! Easy, convenient, and delicious meal that is pretty filling! And definitely get order #6 and #17! Super intense and delicious flavor! Wontons were so flavorful aswell as the noodles. read more

Yes, it's possible, but probable? Vegetable dumplings are on the menu. You could even buy a bag of frozen veggie dumplings to take home. That's if they actually have them, which never seems to be the case.
Can you get veggie wontons with the chilli oil? Also, do the workers speaks english (just want to be on the safe side)?
