Ok, ok. I figured it out. So our local Chinese language school in Northern New Jersey would frequently order mass delivery from a restaurant in Flushing called OK Canaan. Of course, we expect the school to choose only the highest quality restaurants to order delivery from, and yes, it was quite good, considering that it was delivery that was lugged all the way from Flushing and ultimately had to be reheated in the microwave. Come this past weekend, we decided to plan a whole day trip to Flushing to visit Flushing Meadows Corona Park and eat some good Taiwanese and Chinese food. We search Yelp and we come across this place, OK Ryan. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant is small and cozy, but packed a big bite.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We had Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup, Pork Chop lunchbox, Oyster Pancake, Pork Intestine Vermicelli, Taiwanese Sausage, and Golden Red Bean Pancake. Everything authentic and delicious. Oyster Pancake was probably the best I've had for a very long time - it was filled with oysters, not too doughy, not too saucy. Beef noodle soup had excellent depth of flavor and the meat was tender and delicious. We ordered way too much food and took a bunch of it home. Found out that the restaurant was cash or Venmo only. So I take out my phone and Venmo the bill. But wait, my Venmo app did not register OK Ryan as a new restaurant. In fact, it said I had paid this restaurant several... times.... before. Cue the freak out. Who hacked my Venmo account to buy Taiwanese food?? OK, so obviously, OK Ryan and OK Canaan are one and the same. Good for delivery, but now we know, much better in person. This place has been on my list of places to try for so long and I'm so glad I got to try it at last! We came on a weekend dinner and surprisingly there was a lot of people before 5:15pm and no one really afterwards. I think the braised pork was okay as there wasn't a lot of meat and it was a bit heavy on the fat. - Taiwanese Chicken Cutlet - I was a bit confused on first look of this chicken because they had some rick crackers stuck to the outside of it. I'm not sure if that's the way it's supposed to be but at least the flavors were spot on as it was ultimately crispy on the outside with a bit of spice and juicy on the inside. Probably the best dish of the night. - Pork Intestine Vermicelli - I've never had this dish before in the states so I was interested to see how this would turn out and it was actually a lot better than I thought. The flavors were pretty on point and the cleaned out the intestine well. OK Ryan serves authentic Taiwanese fare, notably crispy stinky (emphasis on stinky) tofu. When I ordered this dish for takeout, the stench was pervasive through the bag. Despite the smell which could fill an entire elevator lobby, the taste of the tofu was not overly sour or fermented, and the sweet soy based dipping sauce balanced each bite of tofu well. The pickled cabbage on the side was a nice, crisp palate cleanser! I also got the railroad lunch with soy braised chicken. While the rice box had a lot of food inside, the chicken was unfortunately overcooked and dehydrated. It was still enjoyable to eat all together, just a bit dry. Online ordering for the restaurant is pretty streamline. They made the food in less than the advertised 30 minutes. OK Ryan, nestled in Flushing, is a great choice if you're craving homey and delicious Taiwanese food. Our group of five went family style, which is a must since the menu has so many tempting options. My two favorites of the meal were the fly's head (a simple yet effective mix of ground pork, black bean, budding chives, and chilies) and cabbage in XO sauce (can this be my side dish for every meal?). FYI, they're both listed as spicy but there's barely a kick. As comfort dishes go, the pork with bamboo shoot was top-notch. I also liked the beef with water spinach in BBQ sauce (love myself some sacha sauce), which was a bit wetter than I expected, but tasty nonetheless. For other classic options, you can't go wrong with the Taiwanese style stinky tofu (personally the pickled veggies have always been my favorite part), Taiwanese three cup chicken, and braised pork rice with egg (my favorite of this group). While I liked the flavors of the oyster omelette, it was a little too goopy for me and wayyy too goopy for my friends. There were barely any oysters, but that didn't surprise me. I also tried ba-wan for the first time, and it was glutinous with a tasty sauce, but I preferred the other dishes. The sesame oil pork kidney was also a little too soft for my taste, but take that with a grain of salt, as I'm usually not big on kidneys unless they're grilled and smoky. My kidney-loving friend really enjoyed it. I was also glad to snag the last grass jelly drink of the night. It was excellent and so refreshing! The wait staff was really friendly and helpful, and I really appreciated that. I've heard about it from many people, but I was actually impressed and really enjoyed my meal here. My friends and I went on a freezing Wednesday evening and you gotta go family style to try everything The Fly's Head 蒼蠅頭, 3 Cup Chicken 三杯雞, and the XO Cabbage XO 炒高麗菜 (Taiwanese cabbage hits diff cause it's naturally sweeter!) were amazing! Can't go wrong with classics like their Beef Noodle Soup 紅燒牛肉麵 or Braised Pork Over Rice 滷肉飯 either! The Dong Po Rou 東坡肉 was very juicy and they even asked if we wanted the chef to cut it up or do it ourselves (fun experience to do it yourself ;)). Came here for breakfast when we were in NYC a few weeks ago - I haven't had Taiwanese breakfast since 2017, and I have missed it desperately. We ordered the 燒餅油條 (Clay Oven Roll with Twisted Cruller), 肉鬆蛋餅 (Egg Baked Cake w Dry Pork), 熊貓飯糰 (Panda's Rice Roll), and 蘿蔔糕 (Radish Cake). The servers were efficient, the food was served quickly, and it was casual and comfortable, which made it all the more heartwarming. The 燒餅油條 was unwieldy and not as aromatic as I hoped, but still tasty. The 肉鬆蛋餅 was a little heavy on the 肉鬆 and a bit salty, but the 蛋餅 itself was perfect. The 蘿蔔糕 (not pictured) was tender, albeit a bit bland. The best dish was the 熊貓飯糰 (not pictured) was simply delightful, full of stuff with a combo of purple and white rice for a fun look. Surprisingly pretty big interior. Cozy feeling since they've decorated for the holidays. People's food arrived around us and it smelled so good! We ordered the ba-man, oyster pancake, and cumin lamb. We've never had the ba-man before so this was interesting. It's a semi-clear potato dough with meat and mushroom filling and a sauce. The filling and sauce work really well and the dough has a nice bouncy texture. I believe the oyster pancake uses the same dough but it has eggs, oysters, and vegetables. IT was delicious! The oysters were so sweet and the vegetables gave the pancake an extra crunch. The sauce tastes a little like ketchup/tomato based with some spiciness and was so addicting. We asked for the cumin lamb to be less spicy because we can't handle our heat and it literally tastes like Xi'an famous food's cumin lamb burger which is one of our favorite things. Decided to make our way to Flushing on Christmas Day cause we discovered in a prior year that Christmas Day in Flushing is just another day of the year. Pretty much everything is open, which is a big contrast from the burbs where pretty much everything is closed. Wife wanted to try out OK Ryan cause she had read online that their mutton hot pot was good and she always craves soup during cold winter days. Plus they serve Taiwanese cuisine & we were still looking for a replacement for our old standby in the area: Ku Shain (故鄉台菜). We arrived around 3pm and the waitress seemed a little hesitant to seat us cause she said they actually close for an hour between 3:30-4:30 to rest. After getting reassurance that they wouldn't kick us out at 3:30 we told them we'd just order quick and pay up front and they were perfectly fine with that. She also asked me to move our car cause they only have the 2 spots (#4 & 5) that are directly in front of the store. I was parked in a spot a few stores down which apparently is a no no. So if you do drive here be prepared to park elsewhere and walk or be very, very lucky. We wound up ordering 6 different dishes: Taiwanese sticky rice, braised pork rice w/egg, Taiwanese chicken cutlet, steamed stinky tofu, the aforementioned mutton hot pot, and taro in hot syrup. For the most part they were all pretty good. The chicken cutlet was interesting cause the breading looked like it was made of rice. Never seen anything like it before but quite good. Gave it a lighter, air-ier type crunch which was nice. The steamed stinky tofu was also interesting cause it looked & tasted like Cantonese style steamed fish w/ginger & spring onion but w/stinky tofu instead of fish. It wasn't really all that stinky but I love Cantonese steamed fish w/ginger & spring onion so I was happy w/it anyway. I think I'd probably go for the Taiwanese style deep-fried version next time though. The braised pork rice was good but honestly it's kinda hard (although not impossible) to mess up braised pork and typically I can eat that all day, every day. I thought the sticky rice was just ok but my wife liked it. Conversely, she wasn't all that impressed with the mutton hot pot but I wolfed that down w/gusto. They had this dipping sauce for the lamb that was really good. And to finish it all off, the taro in hot syrup was pretty good too. I usually don't like taro but I suppose if you lightly fry and then glaze anything in a coating of pure sugar it'll taste good. You'll want to eat this quick though (or have them bring it out towards the end of your meal) cause once it cools down & the syrup starts congealing all the individual taro pieces clump together. Oh, and we also got a smoked duck to go. After having it as part of lunch the next day, it was also really good. Now for the only negative that I can pick on: the prices. This is not a cheap place. Almost every main dish hovers around the $20 mark to start which I would expect from Chinese restaurants in the suburbs but in Flushing? I guess inflation? I mean the braised pork rice was $12.50. That's a lil' high to put it mildly. However, their weekday lunchboxes and lunch specials are more reasonably priced so I guess you could save money by sticking to those. But besides that, we'll very likely visit again. There's a lot more items on their menu that I'd really like to try. Service was quite good, the waitress was actually very nice and chatted with us about their long distance delivery services. True to their word they closed down at 3:30 and basically everyone came out to the dining area, ate a little something or browsed their phone, then turned off the lights and took a nap. By the time we left around 4 I had to go root around behind the curtain for takeout containers and then we let ourselves out. This is my review from my visits on June 22 and 23. I visited here with my daughter Taiwanese breakfast. The food is very authentic, not overwhelmingly flavored and spiced, just the right amount for healthy food and ingredients. I returned for a lunch deal with 3 items and 1 deal the next day and very satisfied with their home cooking dishes. The staff is very friendly and kind. Food is simply marvelous! I love the fried pork liver which impossibly tender and yet slightly crispy on them outside. Also the sesame oil pork kidney is soaked with wine and so tender and flavorful. A good place to check out if you're looking for authentic Taiwanese food. They have a big menu so you have plenty of options to choose from. Agh, I can't tell if I'm more critical of Taiwanese food because I've had a lot when I go to Taiwan, but I thought that the food was ok but nothing outstanding. I had this place bookmarked because they have stinky tofu, which is one dish that I sometimes miss that is harder to find in the US. The stinky tofu here was frankly a bit disappointing - it was drier than the ones I get in Taiwan. We also ordered the Dongpo Pork, which was good but I thought could have been much more tender and more flavorful. I think the pork was a bit too chewy for me to really like it, but it wasn't bad. The final dish we got - the salt and pepper pork chop - was very good. It was the perfect crispiness - not too fatty and greasy - and had a lot of meat on the bones. If I were to come back, I'd probably get the salt and pepper pork chop and try some other dishes. I was craving some oyster pancake and so I looked around and this was the only place that was open at 8am on a Sunday. I decided to give it a try and showed up right when they opened and was the only one there. The service was great. The servers explained everything and was able to get what I wanted. Out of the dishes I had, I like the stinky tofu the best. At first you wouldn't even know the restaurant serves stinky tofu when you walk in, but right as you eat the first bite, the smell comes out and it was delicious. Casual comfort food that's really good, definitely more of a local spot! Written in order of favorites :) Smoked Duck: I love duck so unsurprisingly this was delicious to me. The smokiness is forreal, very fragrant and you can definitely taste it with each bite. Infused! The duck isn't too fatty like you'd normally get as a roast duck, the pieces meaty and very tender. Pumpkin Egg Tofu Veggie Casserole: normally I'm not too into pumpkin dishes but this was another gem! The soupy part is soo good I found myself spooning into my mouth long after everything else had been eaten.
