It was my wife's birthday and I had requested to sit outside. When we arrived for our 7:45 pm reservations we had to wait 45 mins to be seated and we were told by the manager that the warmer for our table is not working. He said we can either sit in the cold or he can arrange something inside for us. With a 2 year old it was hard to sit outside so we decided to sit inside. The hostess at the door was not very welcoming and had an attitude for some reason. They were very busy but still not an excuse. I would have expected an apology or at least something to acknowledge the inconvenience. Not only did he or management not offer that but they made us feel like it was our fault somehow and that we were causing them an inconvenience. I came here for lunch yesterday and ordered the special which was supposed to be a Cobb Salad. It ranked up there as one of the worst meals i have ever had. There was a lot of lettuce, a little bacon, no egg and no tomatoes. The worst part was the hunks of turkey they put into it. Most of them were filled with gristle that you would usually throw away. It was like they put the discarded parts of the turkey into the salad. And to top it off there was supposed to be dressing on the side which was never delivered. And of course he waitress never stopped by until the end of the meal to see how things were going when i could finally ask her for the dressing; truly a sad experience. I want to like this place. I love it conceptually. Plus its pretty inside with a nice menu. The problems? It is way overpriced. The service is snooty. The food isn't consistent, and things come out wrong pretty regularly. (I've eaten in 3 times and taken out 4 or 5). But what really prompts me to write this bad review? I did a take out order for a burger, hold the bacon mayo. I'm not a bacon kind of girl. Ordered it medium well. When I got it home it had bacon mayo (super yuck) and was rare inside. I was sad. I immediately call up, spoke with a manager, and asked for a credit since I wasn't close enough to go back. They told me they were writing my information down and when I was back next time I could just let them know I had a credit and it would be honored. Interesting system I thought, but I went with it. Flash forward 2 months later when I tried again and ordered the burger to go. I went in to pick it up, and told them of the credit, and they looked at me like I was crazy. They sent a fancy manager in pin stripe suite over to handle me. Fancy manager guy looked me up and down, asked me some questions, decided he didn't believe my story, and offered to split the price of the $13 burger with me. Seriously? I was shocked and offended. If I wanted to lie and try to get free food, I wouldn't go for the $13 item on the menu. The whole thing was ridiculous. I told him he could keep his burger and that he lost a customer. This place is walking to distance from where I work so I decided get a nice lunch by myself. When I walked in, it was clear that this was definitely going to be a relatively expensive lunch given the decor and the crowd that was there on that particular day. I ended up sitting at the bar and ordering their Green Meadow Double Cheddar Burger ($17) which includes truffle parmesan fries. I ordered the burger medium-rare and after waiting 15 minutes, I realized that their service is either slow because of lunch or that the burger was overcooked. Unfortunately, it was the latter and I was left with a burger that was drier than I would have preferred. The truffle parmesan fries were honestly pathetic. I barley got a hint of umami-flavor that you would expect from something truffle and/or parmesan but it was left to be seen. In the end, this place is severely overpriced for what you get. The food would have been decent had it been cooked or seasoned correctly. The atmosphere and decor were definitely interesting but when I come to a restaurant, I come to eat delicious food and White Dog Cafe was a big miss for me. read more

Stopped by for brunch on Sunday afternoon and the place was packed. Thankfully, the attentive manager Paige pointed out a couple of bar stools opening up so we didn't have to wait. We had no problem finding an off street parking spot right out front. White Dog is tastefully decorated in an upscale pub format with a large bar. Our bartender Natasha took great care of us, and we were able to order everything from the menu. I went with Lancaster County three egg omelet, featuring goat cheese, spinach, dried tomato and artery challenging amounts of bacon (for the record you can never have enough bacon). Served with diced potatoes, the omelette hit the spot and, thankfully, the presence of spinach somewhat mitigated the cognitive dissonance I experienced eating such a delicious yet myocardial infarction inducing meal. To further tame the cholesterol now seeking a home on my artery walls, I washed down the omelette with a delicious grapefruit mimosa. For $12, if you have a meal, you can get all you can drink mimosas. I just went with one as there were home projects calling, but I could definitely see myself taking advantage of this offer in the future, and White Dog may well rue the day I walked in the door. If you are considering White Dog for brunch, be advised that there was about a 30 minute wait for a table on Sunday at about 1:30pm. To me, its always a good sign when a place is packed, rather than showing up and being the only ones there. There were still seats at the bar, and the full menu made this an easy choice rather than waiting. read more

update: went last night for their restaurant week tasting menu, which is fabulous by the way. My family went last year and were so impressed we had to go again. HOWEVER, last night was such a disappointment. we arrived at 7:25 for our 7:30 reservation and did not get seated until 8:20... The staff was apologetic, the manager gave us two rounds of free drinks which was much appreciated... but it was the kind of wait that isn't because other people are just taking longer than expected. that was the kind of wait where they took on too many walk-ins without taking their reservations into consideration. I completely understand that restaurants are the kind of place where things happen minute by minute so I can't much fault them. I will be back for sure but they lost my dad as a customer, which is a shame since he's the one that picks up the big tabs. read more

I don't write reviews unless something is unquestionably bad, or remarkably good. This review is solely based off of service quality at the bar, so I cannot comment on table service, which may be very different, I hope. We arrived and were not greeted by the host/hostess. We proceeded to seat ourselves at the bar and waited two minutes to be "greeted" by one of the two bartenders, operating a basically empty bar. We were two of four people sitting at the bar. I wouldn't even really call it "greeted", more like "what do you want?". We asked for menus and got them. We then decided on what we wanted to order and had to literally stare at and flag down a bartender to place our order. We ordered cabernet and were served pinot noir, which we didn't even know until our second round was poured and we were informed that we had been drinking pinot noir. We then ordered cheese. I was asking questions about the cheeses, which the bartender was desperately unprepared to answer. The overall feeling was that he didn't want us there. The cheese came out, along with calamari that we ordered. The crostini were half soft, stale and a little soggy, as if they had been sitting under or to the side of a refrigeration unit, or that some liquid had dripped into the ramekin and sat there, maybe they don't dry their ramekins when they come out of dish. Food was decent otherwise. I'm not really concerned about the food at this point. Every time we needed something, the bartenders were fraternizing with servers in the service window, looking at checks, polishing glasses, etc. I realize that there is work that needs to be done, but when we are 2 out of four people at the bar, and no one really in the restaurant, I feel like the service should have been right on point. We felt that because we were not wearing blazers with pocket squares and shiny shoes that our service didn't matter. One of the bartenders was also OPENED MOUTH COUGHING on and around the food. After we paid the tab, we got up to leave. There were now 3 bartenders standing directly in front of us. I stood to put on my jacket. Paused. Looked at all 3 bartenders, waiting for a goodbye or a "have a good night", or a nod, or a wave, or eye contact, or anything... but nothing. I purposely stood there looking at them for 10 seconds and nothing. Really? I won't say I'll never go here again, because it's a cool little spot and I love the decor, but the bar really needs to step up their service game. So it's only been open a week, so I'm really hoping to be able to give the White Dog Cafe Wayne an updated, improved review in the future. As an active Penn alum, the University City location is a regular favorite, and my wife and I were so excited about the opening in our neighborhood. Unfortunately, our first visit (Friday 11/19) was, in summary, mostly disappointing. The "dog-and-country" decor is fun and novel, and one of our two dishes (the Spicy Lamb Bolognese) was very good - spot on! However, those two positives were strongly outweighed by a very chilly table, inattentive/slow and awkward service from several staffers (each of hostess, bar, and server), and a second entree (Prosciutto Wrapped Brook Trout) that was mediocre. The prosciutto was overcooked to a barely recognizable and somewhat tasteless point, around very flavorful and well-cooked fish, but then sitting atop rock-hard charred toast (near impossible to cut). Our appetizer - the Beef Tartare - was also less than satisfying: dense, dark beef, and the quail egg would not easily mix (it was like a rubber ball). Drinks took long to order, longer to arrive (10-15 mins), beer came with literally 2"+ of head, and all drinks (including water) ran empty at one point during the meal. The crowd is lively (even boisterous) in the bar, but the various dining rooms seem to have vastly different crowd/feel/vibe, which means that the "atmosphere" for your experience is very unpredictable. We commented that it would be easy to love one room, but really dislike another. Will they offer you a choice in reservations/seating?? Tough issue. We'll probably give it another try in a month or two... hope to have a better experience once they "work out the kinks"! read more

What a breath of fresh air among the drab of main line wannabes. I am really sorry if I come off sounding like a snob, because as my Yelp tagline says "I'm a fatty, not a foodie." I truly believe this. I am NO foodie. I am not the person who takes a bite and breaks it down into excruciating detail before deciding whether I like something or not. No, it either tastes good to me or it doesn't. Okay, so to reiterate- I am NO foodie, BUT restaurants/food out on the main line are pretty weak-sauce. I am really happy to say that I have *finally* found a place worth taking my friends and family when they come visit me from Cali. Before trying White Dog, if anyone wanted to come eat around my area, it was impossible to come up with any decent suggestions. White Dog is now my go-to recommendation for everything. We stopped in on a Saturday night for drinks & apps and they had a great beer selection (I think, I don't really drink, but my friends seemed impressed), and I got the truffle fries and ahi tuna tartare. the tuna was great, truffle fries were mediocre, but the ambiance was perfect. was so happy with my overall white dog experience that i went back the next day for Sunday brunch. we got chicken + waffles and pumpkin pancakes. so freaking delicious, omg, i have dreams of the fried chicken here. second to none in philly other than the fried chicken at cochon byob's brunch (when they have it!). (actually, i don't really know if these are the 2 best fried chx places in philly, but they're the only ones i've had and i've been blown away both times. maybe philly just has amazing fried chicken??) we got to sit in their beautiful back room for brunch- white, wood, rustic luxury. perfect for a brunch, and being the crazy female that i am, i am already dreaming of having a private family brunch there if i were to get engaged and still lived in this area. hahahah... that's how perfect that back room is! ok, i'm done rambling. i love this spot. read more

For a fall / winter dining experience in the suburbs, I'm struggling to think of a better choice than White Dog. From atmosphere to food, it strikes a perfect balance of homey and high end. Hot toddies and hardy additions of country staples like cubed ham and beans fortify against winter chill. Fortunately, there's no tradeoff in flavor as a well chosen assortment of local ingredients marry into subtly complex dishes. The interior is exactly what I expected; a newer, "Main Line"-ified version of the University City location. A little less character, a little more Pottery Barn, but it's very well decorated and maintains the spirit of the original by segmenting the large space into several cozy rooms. We arrived right at our reservation time and were seated immediately. So the food then. We started off with smoked salmon flatbread, which pairs the not so local Scottish salmon (*gasp*) with delightfully non-xenophobic bedfellows of tomato confit, capers, goat cheese, and a delicious charmoula sauce. Wife loved the rainbow trout. Served with sweet potato hash, pancetta, braised greens, and crab with a truffle butter, she said it was the best trout she's ever had. My chicken was excellent in its own right. Moist with a flavorful skin, it came with braised escarole, cannellini beans, finely cubed smoked ham with a garlic chicken jus. Excellent flavor made to be taken in with a fine toddy. Dessert of birthday cake, which is a dark chocolate cake cylinder iced in fudge and topped with finely chopped citrus. Why is it called birthday cake you ask? Well, proudly affixed next to the cake is a birthday candle so that everyone knows you're special and that it may or may not be your birthday. Duh. Maybe we just hit it at a good time, but it was an exceptional meal during a packed Saturday night. I think I have found my newest Main Line muse. read more

After dining here 3 times, I'd like to write a great review, but I can't. While the food is 3.5 to 4 stars, the service is so God awful, the tables so cramped, and the complete lack of caring when they are 30-45 minutes late in seating a reservation so glaring, the White Dog only gets 2 stars from me. If I have an 8PM reservation, I can understand 8:15 or so, but when it's 8:40 and you seat us at the smallest deuce, in a corner, next to a door, I cannot forgive. read more

Hmmmm okay I'm from Los Angeles where organically sourced restaurant are a dime a dozen and I've never seen a bug walking on my salad having a nibble on the plated greens. Yet again, another fine meal from White Dog, with exceptional service to match. I was greeted very warmly and politely by the hostess. She was very kind and seemed to be holding down the fort well. Matt took care of my dining today. He was quick, professional, and welcoming. Onto the food: the salad is always my go-to. Smooth, creamy goat cheese, light but bold creme fraiche, and salty/crunchy/chewy polenta croutons balanced the fresh tang of the balsamic. All those flavors line up magnificently with the earthiness of the fresh gold and purple beets; finished with a bit of a palate cleanser (the watermelon radishes). Then came the Soup and Sandwich combo. As usual, the KSM Soup was delicious. Earthy and mellow, it paired well with the bite of the Chives, as well as the Truffle Creme Fraiche. Finally for the sandwich, I ordered the Green Meadow Farm Smoked Ham sandwich. Important to note, Onion Poppy Seed buns have always been a favorite, so this just fell right in line. Briny and smoky, the ham was a perfect partner for the Celery Root & Apple Slaw; an even chew with a nice crunch. It was okay... came here for a birthday brunch on a Sunday. I made reservations and i did confirm the reservation... we still waited 45 mins for our table...One of the hostess was so rude and obnoxious. Never once appologized and was just so rude. Thank God the other girl was good- i think she was a manager. When the bill came she took off our drinks and dessert. The brunch selection wasn't all that good.. i was expecting more. This cafe loves dogs. There are also a lot of white people. I guess the name is apt. This place also is very reservation heavy. If you don't get one, you'll be hard-pressed to find a seat within due time. It probably speaks to the overall pleasant ambiance and high quality of food offered here. Our waiter was also a nice mang. I can't remember what I got but I remember that it was very good. Their menu is also seasonal so I honestly don't recognize any of the items from when I went which was some months ago. Either way, the prices were very reasonable and I didn't remember it being too expensive. Also, my girlfriend's brother-in-law paid for everything so I suppose I am biased. There is also an Anthropologie nearby which doomed me. My fat legs couldn't run away after eating at White Dog's. It was my girlfriend's plan all along! Girls are conniving. White Dog is complicit. I'm giving this place 5 stars because the food is really really delicious and the atmosphere is awesome - and that's really what matters. However, I do have a minor complaint. I came here with my sister for the happy hour specials after work one day and were told that we could only order off the happy hour menu while sitting at the (pretty small) bar, even though the entire front area of the restaurant was completely empty. It was only 5PM on a random rainy wednesday, and it was pretty evident that the small 2 person tables next to the bar were not going to fill up. Needless to say we stood around waiting for bar stools to open up before we were able to sit and enjoy a couple drinks and apps... I did not think that spoke well of their customer service. Most importantly, the food and decor is just fantastic. I've been a few times - sometimes for brunch, sometimes for happy hour, and never gotten anything I didn't like. The breakfast burrito, bloody marys, calamari, veggie burger, sangria, etc etc is all so good. Prices are pretty high, but that's okay because it's a high end restaurant and you pay for the whole experience. I highly recommend! read more

The inside of this place is like Anthropologie-meets-Cigar Bar-meets-Cracker Barrel. That makes sense, right? It's pretty cool, but it's like ONE too many rusted or "shabby chic" giant bird cages adorning the place, making it seem a bit crowded. But, I got the idea, which overall was cute. We went over here about four weeks into its opening, and we were (naturally) pretty excited, as Wayne hasn't had any notable new restaurant activity in a while. Then I noticed most of the people around us were older than time, BUT well-heeled and with really fun costume jewelry on. Maybe that's why - they've all been okay with hanging out at Georges'? Not sure. At any rate, onto what matters... . First, our table. Was miniature and crowded.. The menus are on these wooden blocks, so it makes for limited real-estate on the table btw the wine and water glasses, bread, etc. We kept trying to move the wine list to create room, but then waiters kept taking it from us, so that was mildly comical. Like, "is it gone again?" "No, it can't be." "OMG it is." Borderline sitcom humor material. You know. The food. The tuna tartare appetizer.. Or was it a tuna carpaccio... Hmm.. was amazing. There was this fabulous wasabi-ish mousse that brought everything together, and it my husband said it was one of the best tuna dishes he's had, which is totes saying a lot. I had the roasted beet salad, which was your typical beets/goat cheese/candied something-nuts dish, but it was done really well. For dinner, we both ordered fish specials, and both were cooked quite nicely. I'm trying to remember what it was that I had... But it was flakey and properly seared and very "nom." All of the specials in general sounded divine and I'd absolutely go back to try more of the fish dishes. The only issue for me was the service. The guy waiting on the table next to us was like WAY INTENSE and loud, and our guy was like friendly hippie kinda dude with low energy. I don't know which I prefer. I guess friendly hippie dude. But.. Both of them were reading the specials. And forgetting stuff, and the issue with taking the wine list away sort of haunted the whole dinner. So, my thought process is - dude. If you have stuff on the menu that's $34 a plate, then you should have a wait staff that can remember the specials, and even recite them eloquently without errant page-flipping and "uhh... let me see what the sauce is on that..." Na mean? I'm not a hater, and I'm totally okay with mediocre service when prices are in an equally medium range, but... When you spend $200 for two people, then hire people who know what they're serving. We did traipse over to the bar for an after-dinner drink, and the service there was fabulous, AND the coffee drinks were super yum and cutely named "El Perro Muy Malo," I think was one... Very cute. Dog theme aplenty. My only criticism here is that the bartender was carefully pouring amaretto into my coffee into this clear goblet of a glass, saying she was worried it was going to break, as that had happened before.. So it's like.. Why are they not using heat-proof glassware for these drinks? Totally unsafe and just crummy for a bartender to have to feel like she's taunting science every time you pour a coffee drink for her customer! I'm looking forward to going back and trying White Dog Wayne after they've ironed out what I'm sure are some newly-opened-restaurant kinks. Suburban dining can be hit or miss all too often. I avoid chains, which has led me to some really great places, and to some equally awful ones. White Dog falls squarely into that "great" column. The bar area is big enough to comfortably accommodate a great cocktail scene, as well as a great choice for solo dining. The rest of the place unfolds - the only way to really describe it - in a series of rooms with markedly different decor, but all tied together with great art and objet that work within each room, and create an overall feel of high-end Americana. Food was glorious - had a grilled rainbow trout that was perfectly cooked. My dining partner had drum with polenta that must have been pretty damn good, 'cause I didn't manage to snake any. Service was top notch across the board. I'm not in this neck of the woods too often, but if I come back this way, the White Dog is on my list for a return visit. read more

A very unique restaurant of the Main Line. Definitely make reservations which are hard to come by especially on the weekend. The decor was great! But it was difficult parking and very loud inside the restaurant. It seems like they were trying to fit as many people inside the place as possible. It felt kind of cramped at least at the table where we were seated. Make sure you try and get a table away from the bar as it seemed a bit on the loud side. Our server was great and very attentive. The food was pretty good - a tad overpriced but definitely better than some restaurants in the vicinity. Definitely try the caramel apple bread pudding for dessert. What a terrible experience. We wanted to try something new in the area, being new here, and I saw this restaurant with glowing reviews on opentable and yelp. We reserved a table on opentable. I indicated it was our anniversary and we'd like something a bit more private. At 7 pm we realized we weren't going to be 5 minutes late for our 7:45 reservation so went on opentable and saw that every 15 minute increment was available, so we changed it to 8 pm. We arrived at 8 pm and the restaurant immediately smelled like fish. It reeked. Not a good sign. We indicated our name and reservation time were told by the hostess that "it may take a while" to be seated. We indicated again we had reservations for 8 and she told us that doesn't guarantee seating. Wait, what? Another hostess came and quickly told her a table was available. The other hostess said "Oh" and brought us to the very open, shared booth table. The guy at the other table would've been closer to me than my own husband. We indicated that this table was not good, we'd like another. The hostess then stated "Well you're going to have to wait a long time for that". I said that I don't understand if it was so packed why opentable allowed us to change reservations so easily. She said "Again, reservation doesn't guarantee seating". Obviously this hostess lacked soft skills. She could have said "Yes, we're getting very packed. Let me see what I can do for you. Do you mind waiting a few minutes until I can get this sorted out?" There are better ways to say the same thing. We said "Cancel our reservation" and went to a tried-and-true place and had a great meal. If they were so packed, I fail to understand why they had so many reservation slots available on opentable. Most restaurants have slots that fill up and only show you what is actually available. They showed every slot open for every 15 minute increment. So I suspect they're allowing all reservations in, regardless if they can accommodate or not. It seems like a bait-and-switch situation, and the hostess' attitude and delivery was beyond deplorable. Although I am kind of glad this happened. That fish smell would've made me too sick to enjoy what I suspect would have been an overhyped meal anyhow. read more

White Dog is a satellite of the longtime restaurant by the same name in West Philly, but so much more pretentious and upscale. Don't get me wrong, but as Wayne has a dearth of good upscale eateries that are accessible to most palates, it is a nice addition. The food and bar are good, the service is great for the most part. The downside is that a reservation on most days is essential-even at lunch, and there will still be a wait. Is the food that good? No, it's good, with a nice variety, but the food is not exceptional. In general everything is a bit over-priced. But if you want the upscale setting yet familiar food, you'd be hard pressed to find something else nearby. Warning: the parking lot for the White Dog is insanity. There are too few spots for what's needed. You can circle for more than 30 minutes waiting for a spot to open. Now to the management's credit they have valet parking available. However as I've seen the valets bang up more than a few cars as they try to enter and exit the lot via Lancaster Blvd (Route 30). I would not feel comfortable handing my keys to one of these young valets. read more

A big "thank you!" to the White Dog for being open -- and more than adequately staffed -- for Christmas Eve this year. We'd heard great things from friends, and decided to give it a whirl. What a great experience! The atmosphere is gorgeous. We dined in the Library room wtih its rich wood paneling and large, comfortable chairs and tables. The bar area is large and was lively. We didn't visit the other dining areas or restrooms. My husband had the mushroom ravioli appetizer and the pork chop entree with collard greens. My husband would've gnawed on the bone (he swears it was that good) had we not been in such a lovely environment. My father alos had the ravioli. I chose the spinach bacon salad with egg and blue cheese vinaigrette. The salad was deee-lish!! Both of us had the scallops with roasted cauliflower and pureed parsnips. The scallops were the most tender and juicy I think I've ever had. Perfectly seasoned and prepared. My husband loved the local beer selection and the desserts were tasty! My husband got the donuts...he favored Nectar's over White Dog's but in the end down the hatch they went so they couldn't be that bad! I had the caramel apple bread pudding and all I can say is OMG!!! So awesome and I'm not really a bread pudding fan. Our waitress Paige was friendly and attentive, and knew the menu inside and out. Last Saturday, I went out for a mother's day lunch with my family and my grandmother. White Dog Cafe didn't open until noon (they don't do brunch on Saturday, but their lunch has some brunchy-type items), so we had a reservation for noon. The decor is amusing- lots of dogs everywhere, including a whole wall of just dog portraits. But it was done in a fun way, and we liked it. We ordered a round of mimosa's in honor of (the day before) mother's day, and the waiter informed us that it was unlimited mimosa's for $12 on Saturdays. LOVE. The menu had so many options that all sounded fantastic, that I had a lot of trouble deciding on what to order. I eventually decided on the Kennett Square Mushroom Soup ($9) as an appetizer and the Green Meadow Smoked Ham Sandwich ($12) for my entree. My mom and sister also ordered the mushroom soup as their appetizer, but my grandmother ordered the Maryland Lump Crab Salad ($14), which she said was good. The mushroom soup was really tasty. It was a little bit rich (it had creme fraiche in it) but I could have eaten a whole second bowl. The ham sandwich was served warm, with apples, melted brie, apples, and greens. I had to take off about 1/3 of the ham and some of the greens, but then the sandwich was perfect. It was served with a side of truffle Parmesan fries, which didn't quite live up to my expectations (I've had a lot of amazing truffle Parmesan fries), but they were fairly good. Everybody else at the table loved their food as well. For dessert, my mom, my sister, and I shared a chocolate dessert for two, and my grandmother ordered ice cream. The ice cream was made by hand, and came in vanilla, chocolate, or chocolate chip cookie. So good!! The chocolate dessert was rich but also amazing- it had a few different items like chocolate macaroons, chocolate ice cream, and a chocolate mousse cake. The service was great the whole time- there was perfect spacing between courses, and my mimosa drink was kept full (which is pretty much mandatory for me to enjoy spending 2 hours straight with my family! haha). Our waiter was friendly and had a great sense of humor- he was really awesome. When it was time to leave, the restaurant had gotten fairly crowded. Our table was near the bar and it was getting a bit loud- I can't imagine what it sounds like when the bar is packed after work! Overall, I'd definitely be back- there are so many more things on the menu that I want to try! We ended up spending about $190 for 4 people, but we had three courses, and 2-3 cocktails each, and I thought the price was fairly reasonable... we left so full that none of us ate dinner that night! I hardly ever give stars because nothing is perfect, right? But, we go to White Dog at least once a month for brunch and it is the only "mid priced" restaurant that I have never felt rushed in and the service is incredible. Especially when you've got kids, time with friends is difficult to schedule, so when our schedules allow us to meet, we always come to White Dog as it never disappoints with service and atmosphere. The food is good- I've had some yummy Benedicts and, not sure if it's still on the menu, but they had a fabulous ricotta appetizer at one point. But let's be honest, cocktails are the highlight of a good girls' brunch, right? White dog always has an updated menu of fancy cocktails- I think I had a kombucha Bloody Mary once. Fun stuff! There are lots of vegetarian options, local ingredients and mushrooms from Kennet Square. Their desserts aren't very impressive and are often a strange mix of flavors (bread pudding raspberry sauce and pumpkin sorbet?) but they're cute :) If you are looking to spend some time, appreciate atmosphere and attention to detail, I highly recommend White Dog. read more

Upon walking into the White Dog Cafe, I knew immediately I was going to love it. It's the perfect winter brunch spot. It felt so festive, warm and cozy. I started with the bottomless mimosa which was a great deal. Only 12 dollars for as many as you wanted! I couldn't say no. I then started with the Kennett square mushroom bisque. Oh yes. It was delicious. I think I ate it in under 4 mins. Sometimes I find bisques have too much cream and drown out the flavors but this one packed a mushroom punch! Next, I tried the cauliflower salad with pinenuts, oranges and olives in a truffle vinaigrette. This was also fantastic. I wasn't sure how the flavors would go together but it worked really well. I will say, if you're someone who isn't into salt, don't get this. It was a bit salty but I love that and it had a lot of bold flavors which I'm also a fan of. I didn't try it but my mom really loved her avocado blt. The bread looked awesome and I will say their fries were great as well. A group of coworkers and I came for happy hour. We wanted to try something different and I was the one in charge of making plans. I suggested this place because of the reviews, menu and convenient parking. I appreciate White Dog having a lot and not having to depend on street parking in Wayne. They were a little skeeved with the dog paintings covering the walls, but we had fun with it. We tried to guess which breed was which and told stories about pet dogs (I only listened because I am a crazy cat lady). Our server was friendly and attentive. He explained that their menu contained local products (bonus points). My friends were a little concerned about the happy hour portions (which turned out to be filling), but they quickly learned that I made a good choice for our event. Everyone had one drink (I opted for the special: Rhubarb Breeze) and we shared most of the food. Truffle Fries with Aioli: these fries wouldn't be anything without the sauce! Spinach Raviloi: a lot of elements! It had the ravioli, mushrooms, asparagus, squash and served with tomato sauce. I think it would be better with a light sauce because there are SO many good tastes already going on with the dish; no need for the heavier tomato sauce. Crab Sliders: awesome. perfect. We were talking about these the next day. They were made with fresh crabs! The sliders were not filled with breading and/or cheap vegetables. Their buns were lighter toasted. Tuna Tartare: great flavor and clean presentation. It was raining the day we came and inside was a little chilly. Just stopped in for a quick lunch before having to go back to work. I ordered a lunch entree and received the wrong dish. No one came back to check on us until we were finished our meal, so I just wound up eating what I was served. No one came back to offer refills on our drinks until we were done, either. I finished my drink well before our entrees arrived and my water was also empty. We chose to sit outside, so maybe that's why. We are mostly disappointed because this is only our second time eating in a restaurant since before the pandemic started. No manager asked us how things were or acknowledged us when we left the restaurant. read more

The decor alone could put this place at 3 stars. I want to live in here. It's full of dog portraits, perfectly decorated, and just the most adorable place ever. Each room seemed to have a different theme too. We were promptly seated for Saturday brunch around 1PM. Service was downright amazing. Our waiter filled our water and brought refills quickly - we were never thirsty! This is usually my biggest issue with service is my drink is left untouched for far too long. Not here. Food was brought quickly and hot. The server was also knowledgable about the menu and very nice. We loved the little bread appetizer that came to us. The blueberry scones and banana bread were delicious. Due to nuts, we couldn't try the coffee cake, but it smelled amazing! My husband and I were at a debate about our meals. He ordered the double cheddar burger. He didn't like it. I loved it. Their patty was thin and cooked with some char on it, which I love personally, but he didn't. The red onions on the burger were cooked amazingly and the bread was fresh and delicious - we agreed on that. The truffle parmesan fries were the best thing of our meal hands down. Well cooked and truffle-y with nice parmesan, not the nasty crunchy Kraft stuff some places will use. I will admit, they didn't season things much at all - the burger just tasted like burger meat, the home fries on my dish had no seasoning, and the eggs in my omelette either. I chose the Lancaster Three Egg Omelet, which was filled with super yummy tomatoes, goat cheese, and spinach. My only complaint was that the spinach would have been better if sauteed beforehand. The yukon gold homefries were also not seasoned whatsoever, so super bland chunks of potato. :/ Overall, I would be back, though probably for dinner. Finally got to go to White Dog for dinner. LOVED IT! Went with my mom on a slow Tuesday evening and had excellent service that was friendly, informative and speedy. The Kennett Square Mushroom Soup is a must to start! So amazing! We shared some other small plants and by the time our entrees came my mom was so full I pretty much ate my entire filet and half of her pork chop that came with the creamiest most flavorful grits I have ever had. I've been here several times for dinner and once for lunch, and I've consistently had wonderful meals here. The atmosphere of the restaurant is classy, but casual, and the service has always been friendly and efficient. The best things I've had on the menu have been the Lancaster Beet Salad, the Spciy Lamb Bolognese, and the Pork Tenderloin. At lunch, their burger is really big and delicious. The main selling point of this place is everything is from local farms, and they use fresh ingredients and the menu changes seasonally. Yes, you should find those qualities in any quality restaurant, but White Dog executes those principles consistently. read more

After living around the Mainline for years, I finally tried this place out with a group of friends for dinner during Mainline restaurant week; the place was very packed for a Thursday night. My initial impression was that the decor and ambience were beautiful and unique... that probably explains why the place was hopping! I had the pappardelle that night, which was just OK. The waiter misheard me and thought I ordered the half portion when in fact I wanted the entree portion. The flavors were good but some parts of the pasta were overcooked, and it was a bit crunchy! Thankfully, I only had the half portion instead of the full one! My friends were also nice enough to let me try their dishes: I had a bite of the tuna tartare which my friend raved about, and it was delicious! The fried pickles were interesting, but I probably wouldn't order it again. I also had a bite of the artichokes, and they were good and flavorful. Overall, this is a nice place for dining on the Mainline. I think the ambience makes up for the slightly above average food options. If prices were a little bit cheaper, I think I would be inclined to dine here more often. I still have to try their highly rated brunch, so I definitely will be back though! read more

OK, so I might have to update my review and be nicer about White Dog Cafe this time. After a bad experience about a year ago, I finally found the courage to give it a try. I came here for Sunday brunch with a group of ladies. I came in through (what I consider to be) the front door. Little did I know that it was actually the side door, and I received blank stares from one of the staff until I asked where to check in. As if I was coming in to do something else. Anyway, our table wasn't ready yet and so we hung around the front entrance (or side entrance if you're like me). It was cramped, I was in the way... Things got a lot better once we were seated. Our server was incredibly nice and funny. I like sarcasm in case you hadn't noticed, and this guy had plenty. We received a complimentary bread basket and a cheese platter - I now realize it's not entirely clear to me why this was but no complaints! I ordered the pancakes with Gala apples. It was OK. Pancakes usually sound better than they taste to me. Also, and this may come across as arrogant, I always find farm to table menus rather uninteresting and I feel I could cook the menu myself. All in all, a pleasant experience thanks to the server. But nothing too special. read more
