White Flower Farm is the finest mail order nursery that I have come across. They ship healthy plants that are in good condition and arrive well hydrated and packed securely. They offer a one year (no questions asked) guarantee on all their perennials, shrubs and trees which is pretty incredible considering they have no idea what conditions you planted them in or if you ever watered the plants. This warranty is unheard of and while I have hardly ever had to put it to use considering how many things I've purchased from them, but it's nice to know that it's available. They offer some very unique plants that aren't available at your local nurseries let alone big box retailers. Their perennials are second to none! I am always amazed at how big the plants grow in their first year considering how small the pots are that they are shipped in. The key is the healthy root system that their plants have the pots are filled with mostly roots and not much soil so they need to be planted asap after they arrive. When it comes to shrubs and trees they ship young plants that require a few years before they get to the size you might find at your local nursery but like their perennials these will be shipped with a very healthy root system that is superior to anything you would find in your local nursery. Your patience with these young plants will be paid off in spades. My only complaint is their shipping cost seems pretty high to me but I suppose the packing materials cost a lot. That aside, I highly recommend WFF. I have turned on many of my friends and family members onto this treasure. You won't be disappointed. read more

I love their plants quality and the variety cannot be beat. I believe they could work harder on accessibility for people with mobility limitations. The actual handicap parking is very far - The equivalent of 2-3 city blocks from the cashier. I saw two people with walkers and was using a cane myself on the day I visited... I was told that the only way to purchase herb plants was to climb the hill and bring them down to the cashier. That was impossible for me and they lost the sale. I also don't appreciate that they did not return an email reply when I emailed them about the situation. read more

These people are confused. I called the store last week and asked when was a good time to visit as it is November. They said they would open on Sundays starting December 1st, for the holidays, but I could still come during the week until 5pm. It is Monday, and after having driven for over an hour I am staring at a shop with a sign that says their last day open was yesterday, Sunday, and that they are now closed for the season. I think this nursery is both very overpriced, not the most ecologically sound in their selection, and not the most informative in their catalogue, although they do do a few things well. I'm reviewing them for their mail-order catalogue (and I know a number of people who have ordered from them). I have never visited their physical location. I don't know the prices on all plants, but of the plants which I have experience comparison shopping for, many have astronomical prices in the catalogue here. For a particularly egregious example, I wanted to order Virginia Bluebell bulbs, and I see them being sold here for $17 for a single bulb! This is a ridiculous price for a plant that self-seeds and is relatively easy to grow. I can buy a whole plant at local nurseries here in PA for $8. This is just one example. The catalogue also provides precious little information about ideal growing conditions for most plants. Each listing does contain very brief information on sun requirements, but only in the form of a little icon that shows either full sun, part sun, or shade. A few plants mention soil or moisture requirements, but most do not. When I buy a plant, I want more info. I want to know the plant's native range, I want to know whether it prefers wet, mesic, or dry conditions. I want to know both the plant's ideal conditions, and what it can tolerate or survive in. I want to know if it likes loamy soil, or rocky/gravely soil, or clay soil. I want to know if it can tolerate flooding or standing water, or drought. And I want to know what plants it can grow around (for example, which flowers can be grown under black walnuts? Which can out-compete ivy and other aggressive groundcovers? Which tolerate crowding by other tall plants? etc.). And with sun I want more info. This catalogue provides barely any of this info. One thing that I think is a little better about the catalogue is that it does provide information about deer resistance, and plants that attract hummingbirds or butterflies. This info is useful, and from my experience, the information provided is pretty accurate. My last, and probably biggest complaint about this nursery is that their selection seems very deficient in native plants, and particularly, in pure / straight species. In many species (like Columbine, Wild Ginger, and many others) this place actually ONLY stocks the non-native, in spite of the native species being quite beautiful and easy to grow (I love the red-flowering Columbine native to E. North America). What few native plants they have, like black-eyed susans, asters, and trout lily, are hybrids and cultivars, which have little to no value for ecological restoration purposes. The hybrids and cultivars also lack genetic diversity, which I find can be problematic for establishing a population long-term in your garden. They may look showy at first, but I've found that they're less likely to naturalize the way I want. I like to garden in such a way that my garden is itself a nature preserve, providing a seed source for locally native plants that can then seed out into surrounding wild areas. This nursery is not a good choice for my needs because an overwhelming majority of their stock is non-native, and the few natives they have are mostly hybrids or cultivars. The few native plants that are straight species, the catalogue doesn't identify the source of the plants. This can be an issue for species with a big range. For example, they sell Asclepius tuberosa, Butterflyweed--which is a strikingly beautiful plant. But this plant has a huge range, from California to Maine and New Brunswick, south to Florida and Texas. If I'm ordering in Texas, I want to order from a local population because it'll be more adapted to local conditions, whereas if I'm ordering from, say, Connecticut, then, similarly, I'd want a population from somewhere in New England or nearby. I am surprised at how behind the times this place seems. But I would encourage them to update their catalogue. A few relatively easy changes could make a big difference. I would really love to see them: (a) offer native versions of plants, preferentially to non-native plants, in the cases like Columbine or Wild ginger, where there are both native and non-native versions (b) provide more detailed information about the growing requirements of each plant, in their catalogue (c) sell more straight species and fewer cultivars and hybrids (d) identify what geographic regions the plants in question have been taken from, which would be very useful for buyers, when buying plants that have a very large and diverse native range. Maybe then their high prices would be justified! read more

I have tried hard to deal with these people for so many years, and it always ends up in pain and sorrow. Take my advice, go elsewhere. If you want to know the details... 1) they ship inferior merchandise poorly handled (which is SO important for flowers and plants!) so stuff arrives old, dead, over the hill, over-sprouted, etc. 2) their customer service is the absolute pits. They can't find your order. They never heard of you. They never heard of your order. You don't exist. They don't exist. You know the kind of conversation... death by interminable customer hold minutes.... 3) they also don't ship what they are supposed to in the packages they are supposed to so it begs getting sucked into the vampire deadly so called customer service death spiral... the latest issue was shipping me all the bulbs but not the planter pots that were part of the set. Days pass. bulbs sprout. no pots. bulbs rot. I still don't exist as far as customer service is concerned... the order is a figment of my flower imagination... save yourself the angst. read more

Insufficient and / or inaccurate labeling on plants - no favor to a beginning gardener. I'd seen White Flower Farm catalogs occasionally, and after moving to CT, to a home w lots of gardening room, eagerly anticipated my first trip to WFF. An inexperienced gardener, I detected no warning signs, no labeling that made me hesitate to buy gooseneck loosestrife. 1st year; great. 2nd year; way too much. 3rd year; recruit husband to uproot. 4th and subsequent years, rue the day I ever stopped at WFF and vow never to go there again. Site after site describe it as invasive, vigorous. But this gem from Penn State is my favorite: "this rhizomatous perennial primrose family member can spread as quickly as bamboo to dominate the site!" I think selling this is irresponsible. Back to the garden - again - to try to get rid of this year's crop. Final issue: I find that for some reason I can't post a one star review directly on their web site - the review is rejected... Don't waste your precious (gardening) time and dollars with this company. Lots of website and catalogue hype.........with products that don't meet expectations. I ordered 4 South African amaryllis bulbs which are supposed to be premium bulbs with blooms in time for Christmas. The bulbs arrived in mid- October....they appeared very undersized and one was moldy/rotten..... A big surprise and huge disappointment.....given that these bulbs were $18+ each and a FORTUNE to ship. I called White Flower Farm customer service and was told the bulbs from South Africa are smaller but will produce the same large blooms as advertised. (my thoughts as she spoke: "THEY BETTER........ .I've picked up better looking amaryllis bulbs on the clearance shelves at Home Depot') Customer Service sent out a replacement for the moldy bulb immediately. I placed all 4 of the bulbs in the brown paper and card board packaging materials they were sent in and put them in our dark basement....intending to plant them on Nov. 1st.........about 7 weeks before Christmas When I retrieved the bulbs from the basement, 3 of the 4 were in bloom......on 3 inch stalks! I called customer service again. After complaining to customer service....I was transferred to a manager who offered to send 4 MORE bulbs......or give me a refund for all 4...which I took. I planted the four blooming bulbs (from the basement) anyway....the second stalk they sent out when in planting medium and daylight were undersized and totally underwhelming......the worst holiday display of amaryllis I've ever had..... during about 20 years of planting these bulbs. I've had glorious displays of blooms whether I purchased the unplanted bulbs from local nurseries or big box stores. Although White Flower Farm customer service tried to be helpful and stood behind their product......I wouldn't buy from this company ever again. I purchased 6 peonies tubers online 2 months prior to receiving them. When they recently arrived I was extremely disappointed. Approx. half the order had unacceptable tubers with only 2 eyes (advertised as having 3-5 eyes). Customer service went out of their way to try to rectify the situation. Because they were sold out of the tubers I had ordered, they did give me a 50% refund. I was still in need of replacements and didn't want to wait 5 years to get a flower, so I ordered tubers (same variety) from a competitor, Adelman Peony Farms. They were here 3 days later. Prices were a bit higher on some varieties, but lower on others. The difference between the quality and size was enormous (see pics). APF was far superior. Now I realize how unacceptable ALL the tubers were from White Flower Farms in comparison and should've gotten a full refund. The quality and selection are both great. The staff working the grounds are very friendly. Unfortunately the woman running the cash register today...not only unfriendly, but very I'll mannered. I grew up tagging along with my parents on their many trips to WFF. When my husband and purchased our first, and later our second home, White Flower Farm was our go-to destination for landscaping needs. I have a very long history with this business. Sadly, our last two trips of last season, and on this, our first trip of the 2015 season, left us feeling very disatisfied with our experience. So this was our last trip to the farm. While I will cherish the roses and other plants that we purchased today; when we're paying a premium for our plants, we expect premium cystomer service as well. I live in California but I mail order my heirloom tomatoes from White Flower Farm and I love this company. I was tuned on to them by America's Test Kitchen which mentions this farm as their go-to destination for veggie plants and the like. The people are so helpful, I had several questions that I asked by email that they were happy to answer and explain for me. Also- I get spring fever and order my tomatoes early (late January) and WFF will hold my plants until it is the appropriate planting time for my zone. This is the first company I have dealt with that has this type of policy and it is great. This way I cant kill it before it has a chance to flourish. read more

OK, the catalogue and pictures are a knock-out. But those are pictures. I used to live up in Litchfield County and went over there to see what I thought would be the catalogue in real life. Not a chance. I've ordered from them and 75% of the plants did not emerge about the tiny root stock that was sent. That's what you'll get. Root stock. You are not getting the gorgeous flowers as pictured. They do consider themselves the Holy Grail of flowerland. But check out their shipping prices -- almost 50% of the cost of the order. In my experience, the annual subscription plants are beautiful and healthy. But they are shipped at random times each month, with no email to notify me that they have shipped and no estimated delivery or tracking number. It is the only business I know that ships to me without telling me what's going on, and shipping a beautiful plant to me is kind of a waste if I am not home to receive and don't know I should arrange for a neighbor to watch for it. White Flower Farm is a slice of heaven. We make the trip at least once per year as a family and wander the grounds and greenhouses for hours before heading to the retail store. If you don't do that, you are missing 3/4 of the experience. Take along a camera because there are many opportunities to get great gardening ideas every way you look. If you don't step into the Begonia greenhouse, you have missed the opportunity of a lifetime. And then there is the retail store with many beautiful opportunities to open your wallet, and not just for plants. It is an adventure! read more

The Nature Hill Nursery is the worst customer experience I ever had . I purchased a bunch of plants from them . They sent me a dead butterfly bush which I called and emailed about numerous times with concern that it appeared to be dead upon arrival. The customer service didn't get back to me and when I finally got someone on the phone they said yes we can replace it at 50% cost plus shipping . Yeah you read it right . I wish I could attach an email they sent . I always order all my plants from nurseries and have a great comparison on how situation like this should and are typically handled. it's not the case with this nursery . Beware of this place order from other nursery . I was very pleased with Fast Growing Tree nursery as they are very attentive and send great healthy plants and stand by their product if plant dies .White Flower Farm is great too . I cannot count how many times this place has sent me the wrong items. The sad thing is that often, you won't know it's wrong until you've planted and nurtured it. The latest fiasco involves a peony. I ordered a Henry Bockstoce from them which is a beautiful, very large double peony and is shipped as a root. That means you have to plant it with care and attention, and nurture it for three years before it flowers. I did and can you imagine my surprise when the flowers are totally different from what I ordered? I contacted them explaining that I have no more room in my garden for additional plants, and that I'm unwilling to dig up something I've nurtured for three years and plant the replacement and nurture it for another three years before getting flowers. I requested that they provide a solution other than sending a replacement. Today, I got an email stating that they're sending a replacement root. Stay away from this place if you want to get what you ordered. If you want to end up with multiple, free, unidentifiable plants, purchase from them. read more

I ordered a Blue Billow Hydrangea online on Monday 5/18. They charged my credit card the $50 immediately then sent me an email notifying me that it was out of stock and they would send me one in the fall. Uhhhh.... NO. They should have noted online that it was out of stock (they did not) so I could buy it elsewhere (which I did) but they took my money for an item they have no intention of sending me until October. I live in CT about 2 hours on the other side of the state from WFF. I have been ordering from them for 15 years-usually because 1. I'm lazy and 2. I get sucked into their catalog of rare-ish plants that in person have no basis in reality. Two things are true. The amount they charge for shipping is OUTRAGEOUS. I just paid close to 30 dollars to ship 2 boxes across state. The second thing-their plants are small, sickly or in this case DEAD. Don't order from White Flower Farm online. I made that mistake, and I've been really disappointed with their customer service. At every step, it was terrible. I placed an order with them a while ago and still haven't received all of the plants I ordered although they charged my card for the full amount right away. When I placed the order, I specifically requested in the comments section: "If you don't ship the plants right away, please let me know when you will ship them. Thank you." White Flower Farm's staff ignored that request and did not get back to me and tell me that they wouldn't be sending all of the items right away. Next, I emailed their customer service to ask when the items would ship. I received a reply only six days later. The reply said that the plant I ordered would ship the next day and arrive a day after that, but according to the USPS tracking information my order still hasn't shipped yet. I'm going away for the holidays (that's why I asked, twice, when the plants would arrive), so if the plants get here while I'm away, they won't survive. After 2 weeks, I finally called them to ask where my $500 worth of perennials were. i phoned and was told that they're in "process" status, so they may go that day or the next. Three days later, I called and was told the same thing. I asked if they could ask someone to fill the order that day instead of promise some vague time in the future, and was told that the phone folks dont interact with the processing folks. I asked to talk to a manager and was hung up on in the process. What angers me the most (besides their slow motion work ethic) is that WFF took my payment immediately but its been two weeks and there is still no sign of the flowers being sent. My mother-in-law purchased the goodwin grey lavender for $45.95 for me as a Christmas gift. In less than three weeks; it appeared to be dying. I sent a picture of the plant asking White Flower Farm if they honored their warranty on plants and their response was they did not think it was dying. Gave me some plant advise and patted me on the back basically. Sent them a follow-up picture approximately a week ago again obviously now beyond hospice plant care and no response. This was very disappointing as I had even used them for a gift to my Dad's wife. Not anymore though if your going to treat customers like that and not honor any sort of warranty on your plants. I can go locally with Meadow Farms and get a year warranty for some really nice plants. read more

Don't throw your money away! Every year, someone sends me a Christmas amaryllis and almost every year, the bulb arrives frozen and dead. Maybe they should reconsider shipping UPS ground in the middle of winter. At their prices, they shouldn't be skimping on shipping costs when it kills the plants. Previously, at least, their customer service would send a replacement. This year they said they would -- and then didn't. And still have not, after repeated requests. I am very, very disappointed in White Flower Farm. I ordered plants in mid April for shipment in early May. When I hadn't received them (and the order was still in "processing" status) on May 7, I called their customer service group. After getting a run-around from the regular representative, I spoke to a manager. She said that they were very backed up because of Mother's Day, but she assured me that my order would go out on Monday, May11. She agreed to send it express and then gave me "her word" that she would take care of it and I would receive the plants no later than Wednesday, May 13. By Thursday, the 14th, the plants *STILL* had not shipped. I called and canceled my order. Fortunately, I was able to find the plants at my local garden center. I will never order from White Flower Farm again. I suggest that if you don't want this kind of aggravation and run-around, you stay well away from this firm. They are not honorable. read more

I used to love white flower farm. But this year I became very disappointed. I bought some hostas. The picture showed a large leave, voluminous hosta, and the price was high. I ordered two, and they sent me small sections of a hosta plant, what you will get if you divide a single hosta into 4 or 5 sections. A bit disappointing. I had heard rave reviews of this place from NPRs Faith Middleton show. We arrived just try opened and couldn't find anyone to help except to point us toward the vegetable greenhouse. We weren't sure which kinds of tomatoes were best suited for our needs. Everything was picked over and mixed up. Finally my husband found an employee and said "we're having trouble finding the cherry tomatoes" and he made a circle with his thumb and forefinger as if to say "they're small and circular, you dope".
