Overall I can say that this is a solid choice for a no frills burger, staff was over the top friendly. The place did have some vibes of White Castle/in n out, but that's not a bad thing. Not a terrible burger but lacking seasoning. It did come out piping hot which was a plus. Wanted to try the cheeseburg with fried onions with no condiments. A properly seasoned burger and onions shouldn't even need ketchup. I ended up adding ketchup. The buns were regular white buns, I prefer potato buns which make a world of a difference. Never been before, service was good, place was clean, restroom was clean. Ordered double hamburg (no 'er) and cheeseburg (no 'er). Both burgers were pretty greasy, and the Wonder Bread buns are too flimsy to hold up... they were soggy shreds pretty quick. But.... The onion rings were good. Since I came to West Springfield Massachusetts I kept passing this restaurant. The name and the shape of the building intrigued me. So today I had the opportunity to go in and I purchased two hamburgers and a cup of coffee, my friend had two hotdogs. They have extras like Bacon, whiz cheese, and cooked onions. The burgers are relatively small and there is nothing special about them. I am grateful that I ordered two because that was filling. I will say that they had the best coffee I had in a while At a restaurant. They add the condiments, though there are ketchup at the bar facing the cooks and service area. It's very old school Americana -- and I liked that. If they were truly authentic then the burgers would be flat (but what do I know). The service isn't that great as they have no patience for answering questions or you not paying attention when your order is ready. In fact the older woman who seem to be running the line had such a terrible attitude, she even looked as though she was frustrated to refill our coffee. White Hut is a long time local establishment that has been a fixture in the greater Springfield area. My wife and I stopped here today for a quick bite. While the burgers were on a bit on the greasy side (due to their famous grilled onions) and under cooked, they were packed with flavor. The French fries and onion rings did not disappoint. They were out of chocolate shake so my wife opted for a strawberry shake which she enjoyed immensely. I had a bottle of Stewart's Black Cherry soda which was very refreshing. On March 3, Yahoo ran an article listing the "Best Burger" in every state. I was very surprised to see that White Hut won the title of "Best Burger in Massachusetts". I worked in West Springfield for a while, and must have driven past it a hundred times. Truth is, I never stopped here because it looked like a dump. But that was in my pre-Yelp days. One thing Yelp has done for me is to get me out of my comfort zone and venture into some places I might not have set foot in otherwise. So today, I set foot into the White Hut. It's not much to look at on the inside either - eleven counter stools and a U-shaped counter for 7 or 8 standees. I ordered a single cheeseburger with grilled onions, onion rings and a soft drink from a super sweet woman at the counter. The food ran about 8 and a half bucks. I sat at the counter and soaked in the 1950'ish atmosphere. The burger was pressed on the grill, so the roll was squished into English muffin proportions. This was hamburger simplicity and deliciousness at its pinnacle. Nice and juicy with great flavor. The grilled onions added a nice touch, as did the fresh lettuce and tomato. The rings were very good too, a generous portion of well cooked real onion rings. I take a lot of these "Best of" lists with a grain of salt. I mean seriously, in a state with over 21,000 restaurants, how can anyone possibly select the "best" hamburger. But these lists are fun to look at and argue over. Price: The prices are very reasonable, figure on spending around $10-12 for an average person. The person taking your order is the person most likely making the food (right in front of you), so payment is given to someone else on your way out in order to keep things efficient/clean. Insider Info: As you'll immediately realize upon entering, this isn't a sit down type place. When it's busy that's sometimes not even an option. Be prepared to order by just yelling out, possibly over the top of people sitting at the bar. I was excited to be walking in the door of a decades reliable spot for a quick burger or dog. the ambiance was slightly different. the seating area has been expanded. I ordered a cheese burger and a dog the way I had for 40 plus years. When I bit in, there was something about the food that was completely wrong with the signature ingredient that made the White Hut Burger what it is. The onions were sweated with zero hint of caramelization or seasoning. it was very disappointing. if you want to capture the essence of the White Hut you have to take the time to cook the onions properly. Take the time to carmelized them and build the flavor. Admittedly I was not really paying attention to the preparation of the food as i was noticing the aesthetic changes in the dining area. it is good to see the White Hit open again. if you don't get that ingredient right the signature flavor of the establishment will be lost. Goodwill can take a business far, but if you don't make the nostalgic connection between how the food tastes and the expectation of how it is supposed to taste, you are just another burger joint read more

We have been coming her for over 20 years. This place still amazes the business they bring in. If you are ever in the area it's so worth it to try a cheeseburger and hotdog here! The burgers are tiny and thin so you could order a hotdog or fries or onion rings to go with it. Make sure to add the fried onions to the burger. They have a couple tables inside to eat or bar area with stools to watch them cook. Looks like they also serve beer on tap now plus sodas. It breaks my heart to give this review. Sadly, it feels like another classic has been lost. The decline with the current owners is very noticeable. I applaud the restoration of the outside to the more traditional look. However, the quality of the food, service, and atmosphere inside has gone down substantially and prices have gone up far more than what anybody should pay for the quality of food that is now being served. Gone are the days where the staff interacted with the customers. The burgers taste like grocery store frozen Pattie's instead of fresh meat. The Sautéed onions used to be kept on the grill top, now they are kept in the food waste catch bin of the grill where they scrape all the grill's burnt remains. The grill used to be always spotlessly maintained, even when it was in full use. While we were there, it looked like a charred wreck. There was never more than 5 orders in the queue while we were there yet the staff of six people continually seemed overwhelmed and unable to comprehend what they were reading off of the computer monitors. It used to be quite the show when people were standing three deep in line placing orders, the waitresses taking those orders and shouting them to the grill cook, and the cook, just listening and never losing focus on the grill kept at least 15 and more orders in their head simultaneously. Never once did I hear an order repeated or see an order get served incorrectly. Now it is the same type of restaurant and food you can find anywhere. Nothing special here. read more

I give it five not because it's the best burger I've ever eaten, but it's the best burger joint I've ever sat in. You won't find a menu for anything other than shakes and floats, so allow me to explain.... 2 cheese wit fried, inside = 2 cheeseburgers with fried onions for here (not to-go) wit a side = with a side order of fries The staff is awesome. Each one of them stood out to me as being friendly, helpful and happy. I almost wanna write a book about what it's like to work here. Ladies' burgers are cut in half... how nice! I never really thought about how nice that would be. The burgers are pretty tasty: the cheese is nice and melty, the bun is toasted and they are just the right size. The hot dogs are good, I don't know how you could mess up a hot dog. You can add cheese and fried onions to dogs, too. Standard condiments of ketchup, mustard, relish and raw onions are available, too. The first visit, I tried a shake. It was.... ok. Nothing special. They use soft-serve ice cream (they have chocolate and vanilla) and it tasted like they didn't add any extra chocolate to the shake. I tried a black cherry float the next time, and YUM! I would get one of those again. Prices are whatever. You pay about $1.50 for a cheese wit fried and $1.75 for a side, I think. They'll get you on the shakes and floats, for almost $4 a piece. It's worth it, in my opinion. You're paying for the speed, the freshly made piping hot food, and above all, the nostalgia. This place is great. Sawdust on the floors, pay at the register after you've eaten (they trust you to tell them what you had.) The pile of onions on the griddle being cooked just tell you what you should ask for on yours. I get a couple of cheeseburgers with grilled onions, salt & pepper, that's it. The buns are toasted on the grill, too. And a grape soda or root beer. Kind of perfect. No, it's not a hipster, gourmet burger, it's just better than all the rest.
