Oh midway midway what am I going to do with you? It is a true struggle to find anything good at this airport. From the lack of Starbucks and chain restaurants I decided to give this place a try. What can possibly go wrong with a place that advertises American food? I got the burger with fries. It came out to be a whopping $20 of I'm never coming back. Did the cook lose the salt in the back? Along with the pepper? Oh and a recipe for a decent meal? Apparently. Honestly the food was mediocre. Not good or bad. At least edible right? I sincerely try to avoid this airport for the horrible food options. At least my service was good. I've seen this place packed to the T. If you see that, it's not worth the wait. Try elsewhere. What else are you going to do if you are about to catch a flight? Atmosphere was weak. Tables too close together so we were innocent bystanders to a silly marriage dispute between 2 baby boomers (No, I am not a millennial. Gen X.) Really crowded here which is good for business and bad for patrons. TVs had football going which was good but no sound for the games. My wife loved her kale salad. I got the Cubano sandwich that left a lot to be desired. They stacked the meat in the middle, poor quality cuts of meat. There was some mustard at the bottom that could not taste. Beers were okay. We've eaten at this place dozens of times when it was Harry Caray's and it was never better than mediocre. Our first visit to the new incarnation was much better. In the changeover they brightened up the walls and lighting, so its not the dank hole it once was. Big improvement. The attitudes of the employees are much brighter, too. The menu is more interesting, with items such as a banh mi sandwich. It was fairly authentic, except for the shredded pork, which is probably also used for a BBQ sandwich. But it was very good. The bacon cheeseburger was also decent. The kitchen is much faster than it used to be. During a busy lunch hour we were seated immediately and were in and out in under 30 minutes. One of the better options in Midway Airport. However, there isn't a lot of choices. Basic American food options including burgers, wings, onion rings, fries, etc. My wings and onion rings were tasty and cooked properly. I had a layover here last week around dinner time and came to White Sox Grill. The place was packed! I had about a 10 minute wait to be seated. My waitress was very attentive and fast in spite of the fact that she was waiting on multiple tables and it was a crowded restaurant. I ordered the spaghetti and meatballs with a side house salad. The salad was very fresh and my entree was very good. I will say the spaghetti did not fill the entire bowl and there was sauce splatter on the outer rim of the dish, so a point is taken off for presentation if you will. I was really impressed with the fact that my waitress could run my card and give my receipt right at the table when I asked for my check. I loved that! It was so efficient! In a busy airport, fast efficiency is a must, and WSG has it! read more

We stopped here for breakfast before our flight. Just don't. Skip it. When my breakfast came out and the "hash browns" were mashed up tater tots I was done. Service was slow and there is absolutely nothing special or good about this restaurant. They ran out of fruit and English muffins by 10:00am. I tried to think of something positive to add to this review, but I couldn't. Breakfast was $60 for four people and definitely not worth it. Multiple items on the menu were not available, but rather than letting you know about this they either picked a substitution without asking, or just didn't bring that person's food. And to top it off, when asked about the missing or incorrect items they had a horrible attitude and acted like we were in the wrong for asking a question. My visit to White Sox Grill was a pretty typical airport restaurant experience. I was traveling with a couple of co-workers on our way to Orlando when we had a layover in Chicago at the Chicago Midway International Airport. We hadn't had lunch, and it was around lunchtime, so we stopped into one of the first restaurants we saw - White Sox Grill. The restaurant is fairly small, and was almost full, but luckily we didn't have to wait to be seated. I never truly enjoy dining in airport restaurants, as I feel they're usually cramped and everyone is tired and/or cranky from traveling and everyone has luggage so it's even more cramped... and this experience wasn't out of the ordinary in any of these regards. But, our server was quick and friendly and the food was decent, so overall it was a fine experience, while not anything to brag about. As with most airport restaurants everything is overpriced, but our orders came out quickly and correctly. We were able to grab lunch and still have plenty of time to get to our gate for our next flight. This is the only restaurant I've experienced in this airport, so I can't really compare it to any others, but if you happen to be traveling and see this spot on your stop I'd say it's a fine place to stop for a quick bite. read more

Airport food is always hit or miss but I was impressed with the salmon salad here. Large. Included an array of veggies: beets, tomatoes, asparagus and pickled onions. Salmon was actually not overly dry. Loved the lemon vinaigrette dressing too!!! I would return for this salad for sure!!! read more

I came here with a team after an arduous business trip. I wasn't expecting to have a meal, just sticking with the group. We were seated right away and within a few minutes of relaxing at the table I became very hungry. Their menu isn't huge, but it is varied. I opted for the BLT and home made chips. This was exactly what my body was craving. The bacon was prepared perfectly, just the right amount of crispiness. The bread was a flavorful whole grain bread. There was just a little mayo, perfect amount in my opinion. It had a hint of horse radish, I think. Just enough to enhance the flavor - not hot or over powering. Another nice thing was paying - they brought portable credit card machines to the table instead of taking the cards to the machine. We had time kill before our delayed flight and White Sox grill seemed like the best sit down restaurant option. The space is a bit tight and we were able to get a table immediately. I got the grilled salmon salad and my husband got the hot wings and a cup of chili. My salad was surprisingly good. The mix of ingredients were very flavorful and the salmon was cooked nicely and moist. The hot wings were decent and not overly breaded. And I didn't hear any complaints about the chili. The prices are what is expected at an airport, a bit inflated. But I actually think the salmon salad was a fair price. Decent food if you have the time to sit down and eat. I usually don't do this and judge restaurants but I feel like I have to say something about this really bad experience. It's bothering me. This is a very busy bar inside of Midway airport but today it was not busy at all and I came in to get some lunch along with a beer or two The service is very nice and they took my order which was a simple chicken Caesar salad but when it came, the bartender brought it to me to go container and told me this is what the kitchen gave me I was freaking floored and told him to take it off of my bill and I was not gonna pay for it cause I'm not gonna eat something in a paper box at the bar I usually don't say things about this kind of stuff, but this was just really weird. This restaurant at Midway is super cramped. It's impossible to maneuver around the space. Menu was lackluster. I got the hotcakes and they didn't even come with the powdered sugar like it said on the menu. Hotcakes were a bit dry. Bacon was not crispy and was extremely thin. I never have high hopes when having a meal at an airport. I ended up checking it out for lunch with a group of seven other people. We ended up picking White Sox Grill because it was the largest restaurant we could find to accommodate a large group. It took them too long to take our order but I went with the teriyaki chicken wings appetizer. What's interesting is that their appetizers are the same price as their sandwiches. Overpriced if you're paying the same amount for eight wings as you are for a sandwich with fries. The wings weren't terrible but they barely had any sauce. While they did have two TVs at the bar, they were low-quality TVs. Their satellite connection even went out for more than ten minutes while I was there. So, when I first walked by, there was a 15 minute wait. Okay, no biggie, I'll find something else. I stopped by again, having not settled on anything, and craving an Italian beef. I was seated immediately, but the place was packed to the gills. There is no room for baggage, so it's a very uncomfortable setting. I would love to tell you about the food and beverages, but after 15 minutes without seeing a server stop by, I finally left. I was not sure I would have the time required to order, wait for my food, devour it, pay my check, and still make my flight. I got the scoop from our super friendly, not overbearing waitress Nina: White Sox Grill's physical space inside Chicago Midway use to house Harry Carey's, an independently owned restaurant chain. Somehow or another, Harry Carey closed shop and sold the space to a corporate business, and they did a complete overhaul opening the current White Sox Grill. New staff, new menu, etc. This all happened within the last 10-11ish months. Nina explained the first few months of business were quite stressful and rather awful. Discombobulated service, training the new kitchen staff, well on the crazy side of things. So thus is the reasoning for the negative reviews. People expected it to be the same service from the previous restaurant, and were quite intolerant to the change. However, since then, WSG has worked out the kinks, learned from the mistakes, and come out on top. We had a great experience, getting to this joint just after 4:30p. It was not overly crowded. No obnoxious yelling come the Super Bowl kickoff. Relaxing space. No pressures but to enjoy the evening. I had their Mushroom Swiss Burger medium well. Very good patty. Juicy! The bun was one of those buttery kind. Thick slab of Swiss cheese. I'm a sucker for caramelized onions. The side of fries were very good. Lightly seasoned. Crisp edges, hot and soft insides. Seeing as Midway has less options for food due to its smaller size to O'Hara, I'll definitely keep White Sox Grill in mind, next time I'm passing thru. read more

I don't generally expect great food at an airport but this place did not even meet my low expectations. I was in a wheel chair due to knee surgery and had to get up and walk to the back of the restaurant to finally get someone to seat us. The server pointed to a table in front of the kitchen doors although half of the restaurant was vacant. I refused to sit there and he seat us somewhere quieter. The chairs were peeled and uncomfortable. The restaurant does not look like anyone cares about it. I ordered chili and 1/2 of a BLT. It came out very quickly, the BLT too cold, the chili too hot. Located inside the Chicago Midway Airport, with a three hour layover, I opted to sit down and have lunch at the White Sox Grill. Chicago Midway used to be my favorite place to have a layover and grab a bite to eat between Potbelly's, the best chicken quesadilla at a random Mexican spot, and ice cream from Ben and Jerry's. Sadly, all three of those places are gone and have been replaced with other spots. So I decided to give the White Sox Grill a try. I sat at the bar (first come, first serve) and opted to try the Mushroom Burger: burger, grilled onions, sautéed mushrooms, mayo, cheese, and bun. The burger was cooked well but the onions and mushrooms were cold and slimy. I ended up scrapping everything off the burger and just eating the meat. The fries were decent but being on a "cleanse" didn't want my entire meal to just be solely starches; that's what ended up happening. Perhaps some of the other items on the menu are better but from others reviews, I doubt it. read more

My co-workers and I had a rather lengthy layover at Midway so we went on the search for a sit down place to have a late lunch and kill some time. This was one of the few places in the surrounding terminals that had enough space for table service. The place was rather busy when we got there but as we spent about 1.5 hours here the crowd thinned out. Service was pretty atrocious as it took a rather lengthy amount of time from being seated to putting in drink and subsequent food orders. Food for the four of us was served at different times and the BLT I ordered came out about 15 minutes after the first person got their order. The BLT was subpar but rather in portion. They have the typical breakfast options as well as boozy breakfast beverages to select from. the drinks can be rather expensive but that's Chicago. Not a bad option. I can say that they now have competition with Hubbard Inn and Home-run Pizza opening. I made a stop here during my layover because they seemed to have a great breakfast selection. It was 645am on a Saturday morning and the bar was pretty busy. The bartender however, wasn't very friendly at all. She was working harder, not smarter. She was running laps and when someone finally stepped back there to help her, they were snappy and not helpful. Oh, btw this was at 7:10am BEFORE ANYONE EVEN TALKED TO ME.. She didn't greet me, she didn't smile, she simply said, "What you want?" I wanted a mimosa and some breakfast so I ordered my mimosa. I have never been to a bar where they serve them in a regular glass, not a flute. I am 100% certain I wasn't even served the correct amount.. I used to be a bartender, I can tell. But for $16.50, I want my drink right. I asked a few questions and ordered pancakes with bacon. She never asked if I wanted another drink, she plopped my plate down at 7:30am and walked away. Didn't bring me any syrup, didn't ask if I needed anything. NOTHING. They did not talk to me the rest of the time I was there. I had to wave down someone else to get some syrup, and even she scoffed at the bartenders not doing their job correctly. I had all but lost my appetite at this point, so I tried to get their attention to just pay my bill. Again, no questions asked, nothing... Just handed me some machine to put my card in and walked away. I even waited 5 mins to hand it back and gave up at that point. I left it on the bar and walked out. I always feel bad tipping nothing, even if there was a problem. I still left the standard 10% but I will make sure to never come here again while I am stopping through Chicago. Really impressed with this place after reading the reviews I was skeptical and didn't know where to go in Midway, but my breakfast is amazing it's prepared correctly they have multigrain grain wheat toast and hashbrowns were so so yummy. To top it off, the service was impeccable. Oh and the coffee is really good, I suggest you try! For those booties out there I'm extremely selective and critical about my breakfast preparation. The hostess was a mess, yelling that she didn't know how long the wait was because tables needed to be cleared off, yet we all could see at least six clean, empty tables over her shoulder. I had the Margherita Pizza. It was ok at best. I had to put hot sauce on it (who the hell does that to a true Margherita pizza)? It was edible. My wife had the mushroom and caramelized onion burger. The bun was soggy, so she asked for a newly toasted one. It was mediocre, but edible. Fries were ok, but nothing special. The server was good, but she was way too busy to be as attentive as we would have liked. At the end of the day, the place is grossly mismanaged and the cooks either are bad or have mediocre ingredients to work with. Either way, management is clearly the problem. read more

I had a delayed flight and needed to kill some time and eat something. It was pretty busy around 7pm on a Monday night, but my party of 2 was seated immediately. The tables are very close together and the restaurant was pretty busy (typical of any airport bar) so there wasn't much room for luggage. Our server was super efficient. Our waters were always filled. Our food came out pretty fast too. The menu looks small, but there is still a decent variety: a few salads, pastas, burgers, ect. I opted for the Chi-Town combo which was a cup of the soup of the day and 1/2 of a BLT sandwich. I was able to sub out the soup of the day for the trip tip chili for no extra charge. The chili was hearty and had a lot of flavor. I'd come back again if I was in the same situation, but this isn't a place that I'd be dying to come back to either. I didn't think the food was bad, and the service we had was very good. We ordered the chicken lettuce wrap, which was mainly messy more than anything else, and a burger with fries (ran out of chips). The sauces were good, but the weird part about the lettuce wrap was that the chicken gets served cold (which I was also warned about by the waiter ahead of time as this is how they normally prepare it). I heard some grumbles from two around me about the wait (it didn't take long all things considered), but we were sitting in the sit-in area and not the bar, so I chalk that up to poor decision making... No one buses the tables, they just shift dirty dishes and glasses to other tables that are empty. Host was awful and rude. Server was very friendly but clearly this place needs some attention. I had the grilled chicken entree. It was Fantastic! Juicy and tender with great flavor. I got the chicken noodle soup which was very flavorful. And, the steamed broccoli was actually steamed.
