It's totally changed my impression about the airport foods/restaurant. We have ordered the crispy duck to give a try. It's really really good. It's hard to cook the duck right unless you are in the authentic French restaurant. But, surprisingly they did good job. Crispy outside and tender inside. Very flavorful ... It's an airport restaurant so I tried not to set the bar too high. I was one of two people in the place and service was pretty slow. It's a good thing I had a 2.5 hr layover or it probably would have been a little more irritating. I ordered the chopped salad with salmon and dressing on the side. It wasn't too long a wait. The salad came out with the dressing on it. It was relatively light dressing so it wasn't too bad. It was a pretty decent size piece of salmon for whatever that's worth. I won't make it a point to visit next time I'm in DFW but if I'm in the vicinity I might stop by for lunch. read more

It's so hard to find a place that serves good food in airports. Luckily I stumbled upon this gem which is a "trans fat free restaurant, who seeks out fresh, quality ingredients: grass fed hormone free beef; farm raised antibiotic free chicken; cage free eggs and local produce." After knowing this how could I resist! It's 9am so I opted for the ranch style breakfast with bacon and scrambled eggs. I only had an hour prior to departure, to my delight my food came in 15 mins. The first bite I immediately realized something was wrong. Everything but the eggs was cold. It was as if the food had been sitting out buffet style without heat in the kitchen. Cold ham, cold bacon, hot eggs, cold potatoes and warm biscuit. It's as if I siked my own self out by the quality of the ingredients. One must have a cook that knows how to properly prepare the ingredients and hopefully they will learn to cook to order. Great spot in Terminal D for healthy, higher-end fare in a casual atmosphere. From what I remember about the menu, ingredients are properly sourced with care, and the beef is grass-fed. I opted for the kale veggie sunflower seed salad with shallot vinaigrette. The salad was packed with fresh veggies like heirloom carrots and topped with some healthy-looking croutons (which I didn't eat). I added shrimp for $7 bringing the total cost of the salad to $22. A bit pricey considering the smaller portion size, but I'm choosing to believe it's because high quality ingredients are more expensive to source. My only real gripe is don't add ingredients like croutons into a dish without listing them on the menu--people have food sensitivities and need to know what's included in their order. Food aside, the atmosphere and service were great. The restaurant is spotless and my server (Alisha) was super friendly and attentive. Came here because apparently they removed the Einstein's by D18 and was desperately seeking breakfast. Lo and behold, the restaurant by my gate has 4 stars on yelp! I had to check it out... Asked the waiter for recommendations, and my server, Tia, strongly recommended the Breakfast Enchiladas, saying it was her hands down favorite thing on the menu. First of all, I love it when your server can provide a strong and meaningful recommendation, even if you're in an airport! When I ordered it with a side of bacon, she looked delightfully surprised and gave a huge thumbs up. You definitely get the vibe that folks here are willing to engage with you and be kind; I know working in an airport is no walk in the park, but everyone I interacted with went above and beyond to really make you feel like you were in a normal restaurant and not a few feet down from your standard airport fare. For what it's worth, their water is tasty and refreshing, not a hint of chlorine here. My food was absolutely delicious and I would get it again. Only reason I'm giving 4 instead of 5 is that you have to wait an awful long time before you get service (especially to get more coffee, water, the check, etc) read more

It is extremely rare that I give such a high review to an airport restaurant, but I think Whitetail Bistro deserves it. I came in for dinner one night during an extended flight delay and found this service to be friendly and helpful. I ordered the duck -- YES, I realize I ordered duck at an airport restaurant, but my spirit said it might not be terrible so I went with it -- and was floored at its perfect preparation. The skin was crispy without being hard, the duck itself was cooked at just the right temperature, and the lemon-thyme jus brought it all together beautifully. I even thought the braised kale was a prefect accompaniment, stewed in such a way as to not be soggy and to be a perfect partner to the duck. Y'all, it was grand. This place is honesty an oasis in the middle of DFW. They also have a nice bar and wine selection. The bad part, though, is that whenever I go somewhere else in the terminal, I'm going to feel underwhelmed. Long live Whitetail Bistro! read more

This is how it went down... Waiter handed over check for $12.95 BLT sandwich. I give him a $20. He then had the nerve to ask me if I'd be wanting change for that. I said yes. He then took his sweet time (over ten minutes) providing me with said change until finally I got up and walked over to him to ask for it. Abundantly clear that at least this staff member is abusing the fact that many airport customers are on a tight schedule. Sadly, my BLT was airport mediocre (a distinct category of blah). But it - for me - didn't pass the test for either really good food or a really good value. It is neither. At one point it appears it had innovative dishes - but now it's brisket or bratwurst or grilled cheese. For a restaurant owned by a renowned chef, it's truly pedestrian. My advice? Yelp is encouraging to not be too hard on reviews because we are living in unprecedented times and things are different, and I agree. Unfortunately, that doesn't take away from a bad attitude from a server. When we originally came to see what they offered he was just annoyed that we were there. After seeing their menu didn't have what the info center said it did, he recommended we go elsewhere, vehemently. Unfortunately someone in our party really wanted a quesadilla from here so we came back after everybody else ate. He ended up being our server and was rude waiting on us until it came time to payment. There were only 2 other people here so it wasn't busy and we weren't rude. I'm not understanding why his behavior was justifiable but if you were wanting to go somewhere to relax before or after a flight while enjoying some good food... I cannot recommend. Everyone in our party felt uncomfortable by this person's hostility. The host, Daniel, was pretty great though. Very kind both times we stopped by. Kinda sad, it's like going to the place that once was. I'm sure the food was fine, but I didn't have any. Why? Well it was very busy. There were 3 people in this bistro, and the pretty lady with the dog got all the attention. So, I was able to order the Smokey Ancho Manhattan, and it was good, very good, but that was the last I saw of the bartender/server, as she wanted to talk to the dog. I'd really give this place 3.5 stars if I could, but I opted to round up instead of down based on friendly servers and what I perceive as better quality relative to surrounding airport food here at DFW. Allow me to clarify regarding the servers: they were super friendly, but MY main server at least seemed to know very little about the menu. I expect 4-5 star establishments to have knowledgeable servers who can help a person choose appropriately from menu options, and I felt totally on my own here. My first course - or should I just say my salad, since my main course was brought out almost immediately following the salad presentation - was the chopped salad. I wish it had been slightly heavier on the dressing and the bacon, but I appreciated the variety of vegetables it contained. Lettuce, kale, maybe spinach, brussels, red cabbage at the least. I had the salmon entree for my main course, and I would give it a solid 5 stars. Perfectly cooked, super tender, with a tasty sauce. Complimented excellently by the cauliflower. I made the mistake of asking for a side of the potatoes that come with the steak - and these turned out to be super bland and unexciting - but that's my fault for ordering something that wasn't meant to be part of this meal. Maybe the bland potatoes are really good with the steak? Overall, I believe I would return here. Especially after walking around the airport quite a bit and coming away unimpressed by the competition. But I would put at least two or three places ahead of this one if it were at DEN! read more

Quality food but inattentive, slow service. EATER suggested this was the best restaurant in Terminal D at DFW, so I bit. The restaurant and bar was about half full, but for some reason the bartender and servers seemed rather manic. I guess everyone was ordering drinks. I sat at a just-vacated seat. The bartender took away the signed check and the napkins but two dirty drink glasses stayed the entire time I dined. Right away I noticed my seat mate with a hot plate of food in front of him, but no silverware. He desperately tried to get the attention of the bartender, then any server, and it was finally brought to him after about five minutes. It happened again to the guy who replaced him; hot food, no flatware. Five minutes pass after asking and then it was finally brought to him. I ordered the "Sweet Pepper Lacquered Duck." Excellent choice; the skin was crispy and flavorful--not sweet but savory, to my pleasant surprise. The two legs and thighs rested on a bed of sautéed spinach (which the bartender had described as kale--wrong) that had steeped in a vinegary sauce somewhat reminiscent of Worcestershire. The whole thing worked well. Of course, no silverware. Bartender had left the bar again so I flagged down a manager who brought me some (after another five minute wait) from the kitchen. The knife had a piece of old napkin shellacked on the handle. I said "screw it" and used it anyway. Overall, good food, good beer, inattentive and frantic service with energy seeming to go...who knows where. For airport food it was delicious. For weak service, deducted a star. read more

I'm always a fan of anything by Kent Rathbun, so I was excited to try another restaurant of his. Being in the airport, I already expected the food to be less in quality than it would be at an actual sit down restaurant. I started with a beer, which came in an incredibly tall glass. It probably was only a pints worth, but the glass was almost as long as my forearm. That on its own makes the experience a little more fun. I ordered the meat and cheese plate to start, which was a little disappointing. I'm not a goat or blue cheese kind of person, and I'm not sure what was sprinkled across the plate, but I was disappointed overall in the plate. Next, I ordered the grilled cheese and tomato soup, which was pretty tasty. As good as it was, the price of it was not worth it. Of course, what can you expect from a Kent Rathbun restaurant? All in all, it was a nice way to pass the time while waiting for my flight, but I may go somewhere else next time I'm at DFW. read more

Let's face it--airport restaurants are generally a disappointment. Other than One Flew South at ATL, the hope is just to have something that doesn't feel like a complete rip-off. With a bit of time to kill before my flight back to LA, after considering all of my options, I opted for Whitetail Bistro. The prices vary depending on whether you order a sandwich or a larger entree, and I opted for a larger entree. But after ordering the sweet pepper lacquered crispy duck, I have to admit to being quite satisfied. It was a substantial portion of tender duck, with bacon and braised kale hanging out in the dish as well, all of it awash in a lemon-thyme jus. Yes, it was $22, but when you consider that for a few dollars less you can get a downright crappy meal at many (most?) airport spots, I felt that it was fair value for money. I was quite hungry, so I ended up adding a side salad, which was merely OK. It was sort of chopped, and I would have liked a more flavorful dressing, but it was adequate. Still, the duck, the friendly service and the comfortable environment are definitely enough for four stars. I'd certainly come back here, as I think it's one of the stronger contenders in this part of DFW. read more

Such a wonderful place to have a meal at the airport. It is very inviting with the menu available at the front podium and a "seat yourself please" sign. But I was still greeted as I read the menu before deciding to come in. Here are outlets along the wall near almost every table and big flatscreen along all walls. The meal was DELIGHTFUL! I had the open tri tip with the roasted tomato soup. The soup was SO good! You can definitely taste the roasted tomatoes. The customer service was excellent and the ambiance was equally wonderful. Great airport restaurant by Gate 23 of Terminal D. Modern feel inside and all fresh made ingredients and meals. I had the smokey tomato soup which was delicious--soooo good. Had the crispy duck for meal with a flavorful butter sauce that was to die for. Macaroons for dessert which weren't anything special. Overall, this place is a knock out as far as airport food goes. It was slow and had a nice vibe, so we popped in an hour and a half before we were supposed to board. Our waters took 15 minutes to come out. Then our drink orders were messed up--this took another 15 minutes to fix (bourbon on the rocks and champagne--nothing complicated). The food was pretty good, but then our check came. There was a $5 charge for beer. They said it was for ice and then removed it. There were only 2 other diners in the restaurant, yet the service was bad and slow. Mixed with the bountiful mistakes, it was a pretty sketchy establishment. Apparently the owner lives in France which may contribute to these issues. However, you'd think after a couple of mishaps they would have been more attentive. I would never come here again--even for a drink. read more
