Took Dad out for breakfast today. Chose Whitey's Diner in Fremont. We went late in the morning (10:30 - 11), hoping it would be empty. Wrong! We got one of the few tables in the diner. Whitey's is not much to look at, but the food is amazing, portion size is quite generous, and the prices are very fair for the price paid. If you leave this establishment and you are still hungry, there's something wrong in your equation. Very friendly staff. We were warmly greeted when we walked in, and we were thanked on our way out. Good lord. My god. I wasn't a religious person until I ate here. I ordered the home fries, (extra egg), with sausage, and as a result, I believe in God again. There's no way food is this good and there isn't a higher power overseeing our day to day lives. Absolutely disgusting. As I'm eating I watch the cook grab raw bacon with his bare hands, then grab a to go container, then cheese,then his phone and talk on the phone, and then back to grabbing raw bacon. Any place with orange Formica tables is THE place for breakfast! Get coffee. They grind their own beans so it tastes really fresh. We both got 2 eggs with wheat toast and bacon, pretty standard breakfast fare. But don't plan on 2 little pieces of bacon with your over easies. We got like six slices each. Also DO NOT skip the home fries! Perfectly sliced, browned and one order is enough for 4 people. Service was great. We got there Saturday morning at 10 & got the last open seats. Pretty bad. Anytime a restaurant boasts about "not doing it your way" you know the experience is going to be pretty poor. Fair prices and good coffee...everything else is bad. Home fries and bacon were extremely undercooked. Even the eggs were so so and its really hard to mess up scrambled eggs. In addition to the food, this was the loudest restaurant I've ever been in. Smiling while masterfully managing every single food item as it sizzled on the seasoned steel. Deftly shuffling tender potatoes. Gently placing freshly soaked French toast. I shared the veggie omelette and it was more than enough. No sourdough toast but the wheat was amply buttered which is always a plus. Mom had pancakes which were nothing exceptional but more than acceptable for a pancake lover. We had a bit of a wait because there's only one chef and one small grill and the place was packed, which tells you something. The lady who served us was so sweet and very attentive, yet not an overbearing kind. Don't come here if you're on a diet and scared of little grease. Everyone seemed to know everyone and when they found out we were from out of town everyone got in on the action on asking where we were from and what we were doing out here. Mark, seemed to be the owner, introduced himself to both myself and my fiancée and made sure we signed their guest book.
