I guess I expected better at the infamous DC Wharf, directly next to a concert venue. This is your standard quick eats pub. Didn't have time to try the drinks but ordered nachos. Wednesdays are burgers and whiskey special. I ordered the $10 burger with fries . The food was delivered quickly but half the burger was bit soggy 2.5/5 The service was disappointing. I waited for 15 mins at the bar before I was greeted . I expected at least a " I'll be right with you" or something. I probably would've left if it wasn't so hot. Love coming here for trivia and Hh and have fun events and pretty solid service. So why three stars? I am basing solely on food. Even for bar food and taking expectations down a bit, I can't say there is anything I have tried here that I thought was good. I think the price point is also a bit of a detriment cause seems over priced for quality and taste. Last time I was there gave the nachos a go and while a good size for the cost, can't say they were particularly tasty or something I would get again. Also got the pigs in blanket things and they were beyond just covered in oil and not good at all. Whitlow's has Friday happy hour deals until 8pm - this is a good spot to swing past after the majority of other happy hours in the area have ended (at 7). The climb up to the rooftop is a long one, but it's worth it - the rooftop has good views of U st and lots of hightop seating. There are technically two bars on the rooftop, the first you'll see as soon as you get up there - it was busy and awfully crowded. Though, the bartenders did a good job of working through the crowd to get drinks out. The second bar is tucked towards the back corner of the rooftop as was extremely empty - had we known it existed, we would've gotten drinks there! Happy hour is really solid: 4-8pm Mon-Fri with daily specials on select days on the week for food. Friday was just drinks - we were happy to sip on $5-6 well drinks. Each of the three floors seemed to have a bit of a different buzz - the rooftop was definitely the social area. Lots of friend groups crowded around high top tables enjoying drinks and apps. There was a Love Island watch party (with it's own deals) happening in the middle floor. And the ground floor was much lower key - a few groups seated around dinner tables enjoying the evening. Good spot to come to have a quick bite with the nightlife. We were looking for a place to have a bite on a Thursday Night, during Howard University Homecoming Week. Whitlow's was open there was a visible rooftop. Also, it was listed on Yelp as an option above 3 stars. We arrived and the ground floor is a diner-like U-shaped dining area of booths and dining counter seating. There was a man doing trivia trivia and some music was automatically playing on a speaker. We ventured upstairs and the rooftop has bar-height tables for 2-4 people. There was a crowd enjoying the Thursday Night Football Game, there are about 5 TVs mounted high. There was a game of cornhole happening right in the middle of the walkway in front of the bar and DJ. The DJ was good. The view from the rooftop is grand. There is a 270 degree view of U Street, the U Street Corridor, Shaw, and a bit of Howard University. You order food across the room with the bartender. We were puzzled because there are 3 men in server uniforms (complete with aprons, Whitlow's shirts, apron towels, and all) that were bussing tables and bringing food and drinks out. We thought that they would come to take our orders. I asked one of them if I could order food (he was socializing with some customers) and he said to order at the har. We walked over and I ordered the Wedge Salad but the bartender said that he was out of those so I changed to a Cobb Salad with Chicken and a red wine. My cousin also placed her food order with white wine. We did not like that the wine was in a plastic cup...BOOOOO! Food was decent, wine was good, view was amazing, and game was nice to have. It's a shame to give this place a low rating because my friend and I were having such an amazing time until we were falsely accused of throwing things off the rooftop and aggressively pushed and thrown out by security and the manager Michelle. She claimed to have saw us on camera when we had nothing in our hands besides our jackets and purses. I came here with a group of co-workers for a Happy Hour for a departing colleague. Keep in mind that this was on a Tuesday evening for Happy Hour, and we wound up staying for several hours. There were 3 levels, and we stayed on the rooftop the whole time. The good: We went straight up to the rooftop, and at the time we got there, it was pretty empty. It was pretty hot outside, and I often am not a fan of rooftops when the temps are high, but theirs was covered and they had lots of fans, so it actually felt pretty good. We ordered several appetizers (nachos, mozzarella sticks, shishito peppers, potato skins, fries, and fried pickles). All of them were really good and had good portions. In particular, the mozzarella sticks were really tasty. They were fairly large, had a good amount of cheese, and they had really good flavor. The nachos were absolutely loaded with toppings (in a good way) and all of the flavors blended nicely. And the fried pickles had a really light fried coating which I liked much better than other places I've had them at. Additionally, the drinks *tasted* really good. I had the dragon fruit margarita, the green line tea, the passion fruit paloma, and a long Island. All of them had good flavor. The bar tenders were also quick, so it didnt take long to get drinks. Why I deducted a star: The drinks tasted good, but they didn't seem to have much alcohol in them. I'm not sure if it's because I had several of the draft cocktails (maybe those aren't as strong), but it took 6ish drinks (and ordering a non-menu Long Island Iced Tea) for me to feel any sort of buzz. Otherwise, it sort of felt like I was just drinking juice. Additionally, they automatically add 20% gratuity. Is this on the menu in small print? Yes. But several of us did not see it and wound up tipping an additional 20% on top. After looking at other reviews, it seems we are not the only ones. Frankly, I think the automatic gratuity/added percentage is getting out of hand in the DMV. If an establishment chooses to do this, it should be made very clear. Otherwise, build the upcharges into your prices for business costs and let people choose their tip. I say this as a person who absolutely appreciates service staff and who often tips my bartenders 30% anyway. It's just a bad practice to force a certain percentage tip, in my opinion. That said, I will likely come back because I did enjoy the environment, the food was really solid, and the bartenders/food runners were quick and friendly. read more

Went to Whitlows on a Friday night after 10p.m. with a group of about 11 friends. We had just finished renting a hot tub yacht and were in need of some food. Since the boat with BYOB we had unopened bottles in our luggage. A female bartender with locs said she would put them up and we could collect when we were ready to leave. Thinking nothing of it we ended up sitting at a table outside on the deck and pushed three tables together. They were only allowing ordering from their late night menu and all orders had to take place at the bar. Not a problem. While outside we had a direct vision to the bouncer as we were also sitting outside. There was a male that was assisting with running food but appeared to be more of a manager, he was so nice they brought out 4 burgers versus 3 and a pulled pork and he quickly went in and edited the ticket to reflect my accurate meal. When it was time to leave we proceeded back to the bouncer who had checked our id's for all of our bottles and were told they had been stolen. She was extremely nonchalant about this and even smirked. We asked how this could have happened when we were watching the entire time. She seemed disinterested and we came to the conclusion that she actually took our bottles of wine. I was thinking of patronizing this establishment again due to their views and lively patrons, however we cannot stand a thief especially an employee that is a thief. read more

Happy hour options are kinda limited, no wine on happy hour although the regular wine prices are not bad at $9 a glass and rails are $5 at HH, which is a steal nowadays. I had soba noodles with tofu. I had fries, that were well seasoned and a burger that was decent, but nothing special. I also tried the wings, which were a little dry and felt like they may have been a day old. What I really wanted to share about is the incredible music I experienced. There is a jam session that happens every Tuesday night and the mix of people that attended was very eclectic and inspiring. As someone visiting the area, I feel like I got a great sense of the community that supports events like this. cool and very large hangout bar on u street! it's massive and they have some kind of deal going on every day (trivia on mondays at 7pm, djs on the weekend, and bucket nights on tuesdays). the rooftop is very fun and there's games like pong and darts and stuff on the inside. the beer selection is great and honestly the food isn't bad at all either (the chicken wrap and burgers are the best). it's a bit on the younger side when it comes to the crowd (arlington takes dc) and lots of college kids but still a great time as the bartenders are super chill and there's always lots to do! read more
