If I could give them 0 stars, I would. I booked a room at this hotel this past weekend, 2/1/20, and checked in at about 11:00am. Immediately after going to the room to put my things down, I ran right back out to run errands, and didn't get back to the room until 5:30pm. (I left back out at 7:00 pm) I return to my room around 2:30am the next day and found a nasty bug crawling on the wall--it appeared to be a bed bug. I could NOT pack my things fast enough--I was disgusted. I probably spent no more than 4 hrs total in the room and was told at checkout that I would have to come back the next day because the manager wasn't "in". (The worker had no clue what to do...BS) Long story short, I called later on that day and the manager told me that I was just trying to get my money back--very absurd. Mind you, I live about 50 mins away from the hotel, why would I want to drive home that early...please let me know? I legit started itching and could not function...I had to go. Anyways, he told that me I would only receive 50% of the cost of the room back, which was baffling because I did not spend the night. He began to argue with me and told me that the hotel had been renovated and there was no way I could have found that bug--I am the one who brought it there. (Renovations doesn't mean cleanliness smh) Moral of the story- if it looks like a motel, RUN! They advertise themselves as a hotel, has nice pictures of the rooms on the web, but the place smells awful and looks very identical to a motel. Sure, it's $76 a night, but do yourself a favor and stay at a hotel that is far more credible. (Marriott, Red Roof Inn,etc.) Needless to say, I will NEVER stay here again and will be contacting BOOKING.com to get ALL of my money back. P.S- I killed the bug and put it in a plastic bag and gave it to the worker at the desk, she didn't look surprised at all. read more

Doesn't look like much when you're driving by or walking up to it. In fact, the exterior kind of gives off murder house vibes to me. Didn't snap any photos of the outside, I don't need any bad juju! The lady at the front desk seemed harmless. Didn't talk to her other than to check in. She was dressed in pajamas which I mean-- based off the looks of this hotel I suppose that's fine, but maybe at least try a little when you're working a business? The narrow, steep, 70s styled stairway up to the room absolutely reeked of cigarette smoke the whole time we were here. The room we were in was smoke free, but I'm not sure about the rest of the building. Wasn't too thrilled about the smell, especially because of my toddler. All of this being said, the room we stayed in (201) was definitely a surprise to us all when opening the door! It was actually nice and SUPER spacious (which was great to allow my 2 year old to run crazy), two beds, two couches and the regular things a hotel room includes. The room itself when we first arrived was absolutely freezing cold we had to crank the heat up to about 85! We left soon after however and when we got back the room was incredibly toasty. My guess is they don't bother using heat in a room when no guests are there. The doorway to the bathroom was SO narrow. If a heavier set person would have needed to go in, I hate to say this but I honestly don't think they would have fit. You definitely couldn't have more than one person going through the door at the same time, even sude shuffling. And there was also a weird step/mishap of flooring both entering and exiting the bathroom, so if you didn't notice it, you very well could have landed on your behind. Along comes the morning and the free breakfast....Or lack thereof... We went down at 9am, anticipating a few or a least one person to be there. Empty. They had two cereals (Raisin Bran and Cheerios), a gallon of whole milk, a few bananas, a few mini muffins that looked like they came from a bag, and a broken coffee AND broken orange juice dispensers. We skipped this place and opted for Dunkin' next door....thank God it was there!! Overall I mean yeah, the stay wasn't bad. But I definitely wouldn't recommend it to anyone or look into staying here again....sorry!! read more

The only good thing about our stay was that they still had a room when we arrived at 9:00pm. We spent more than $100.00 for the night and even though it said no smoking, the room smelled of cigar smoke and mold. Two sets of clean but threadbare towels. A screw on the shower head to act as the handle and the water saving shower head barely allowed water out. No soap, lotion etc in the bathroom at all. Find someplace else. read more

The free breakfast advertised on Expedia is no longer being served. The TV was small and reception was poor. It was 21 degrees F outside.....the room was about 40 degrees and the heat was not keeping up. 45 mins in I still needed a winter coat and had resorted to running the hair drier to pump out some more heat. At that point I left. On the positive side: the room was spacious and clean. The gentleman on the front desk was professional and issued a full refund without friction. Kudos to him for dealing calmly with a disgruntled customer. He represented the company well. That said; I won't be back and was glad I did not have my wife and kids with me. read more

There are rooms that do not face the street, they seemed to be even bigger than the front-facing rooms and were obviously quieter. The traffic in front of the hotel is loud. If you're a light sleeper this is not the place for you. Also, our daughter left her prescription glasses in the room. She didn't realize it until we were an hour away. She called several times to have them look in the room. We were told they weren't in there. We are assuming the cleaning folks found them and kept them. We never left the room from the time we checked in until we left and they are no where to be found in our luggage. read more

You get what you pay for! The room had an odor, at least that's what my friend said, to be honest couldn't tell, had a bad head cold. You could tell that management made an effort to update because there was newer dressers, desk and night table. The walls are paper thin so I had a choice between listening to a couple having sex on one side or listening to what ever the other guy was watching on tv on the other side. The bed was comfortable. The hotel is right on Whitney Ave so you have to deal with the traffic noises. The heating/ac unit worked fine, I actually liked it because it helped to drown out all the noises! The room has a smaller room where the closet is ((no door). It was dark, there was no light , ended up using the light on my iPhone to light up my belonging in my suit case. Now to the bathroom. The toilet was so low to the ground, reminds me of the toilets in an elementary schools. Twice I had to lift off the top of the toilet to stop it from running. The shower had pressure but never really got hot. There was no vent but there is a heat lamp. Hope you are sharing the room with someone your close with because you need the bathroom door open. WiFi is good. If you are not to picky about where to lye your head and you don't want to spend more then $100 dollars, then this is for you. As for me, I can't wait to pack up and leave. This appears to be a family run place. The man at the front desk was extremely nice, helpful, and accommodating. The room was pleasant and clean. The rate was very good. Rooms facing the street are noisy, but we got a room facing the back and it was quiet and comfortable. read more

What a disappointment. ... reminds me of the psycho house from the time we walked into the reception area with an unwelcoming woman behind the desk to our room with broken bathroom window. I certainly had my doubts about the cleanliness of our room. Not a good choice. read more

We stopped early to let them know we would be coming back later past supper time and showed our printed confirmation of a room with "2" beds that I did online 2 months before we got there and he saw the confirmation and was looking it up on the his computer shaking his head yes and was very hard to understand talking through the plexiglass so that is why I kept pointing to the printed confirmation with all the information then he said yes and something else I couldn't under stand what he said after but kept typing something and didn't give me anything that he was typing that so we said we would be back later to properly check in per the confirmation I had from 2 months ago that I showed him. It was the day just before the hurricane and one of us was helping a relative that lives alone cleaning out the basement and getting supplies before the storm while I was with a very good friend in another town have an annual picnic for the end of the season outside who I haven't seen some of his family for a very long time. We got back to this hotel and kept saying I agreed to "1" bed and THEY CHANGED MY ROOM. I showed them on confirmation that I had again but he kept saying I agreed to and I DID NOT. They did not honor my confirmation that I did online and said they only had the 1 bed room. He then showed me a very small room with 2 beds but someone's things were still in the room and hadn't come back and by this time it was just about 8PM. We looked around and this was very creepy and unprofessional and didn't want what he was proposing to remove this mans things in the room and leave them in the front office (we recognized some of the medical equipment in the room and this really was a bad idea). I discussed this with my niece who was driving and we were both tired and said what I was feeling but left it up to her because she was driving. My niece said she just wanted to go home and would stop at the Dunkin Donuts to get a Coke Soda to wake her up for the 2 hours and 35+ minutes trip back home out of Connecticut. read more

Wish I could give this less than one star. The check in lobby smelled like they just had a sewage leak. Our room was on a side of the hotel they appeared to be renovating- roaches in the hallway, open windows with no screens allowed a zoo of flying bugs in, all the other rooms around us had construction equipment in them. The room itself smelled moldy and within 20 minutes we noticed another couple roaches crawl out from behind the air conditioning unit. We opened the curtains and our room looked out over literal trash. Empty plastic drums, hunks of metal/wood/garbage, it definitely looked like they were doing construction around us. I was honestly ready to find a new hotel for the night. Under no circumstances should any people be staying in the room we were given. The woman at the lobby was quick to give us another room (they excused the roaches because "it's hot, it's summer") but I was wary because it was nearby the room we were given first. Based on how many roaches we saw, wouldn't an infestation affect other rooms? We decided to give the new room a shot and had to walk through a labrynth of dingy, smelly hallways. The replacement room was incomparable to what we were given when we first checked in! It was like we were staying in a completely different hotel, if we had been given this room first I doubt I'd be writing a review at all. I was under no pretense of quality when I booked this hotel, but cleanliness should absolutely be standard for all hotels. Once we were settled in the new room, around 9 PM we hear a sound and a stranger walks into our room! This poor guy was so confused and we stared at each other for a few seconds - he apologized profusely. Apparently the front desk gave him our room because they didn't make note that we had to move because of the roaches. I then had to go down to the lobby at 9:30 PM and get our keys reprovisioned because the staff had given our room to another guest. I appreciate that the staff were flexible in giving us a different room but the fact is that we should have never been given that room in the first place. And then having a stranger walk in because the staff didn't make note that we had to switch rooms?! Don't ever stay here. read more

I'm writing this review of the Whitney Inn and Suites at 3400 Whitney ave in Hamden Ct because of the continued pleasurable experience that I have when staying here. As a traveling business executive , it is very difficult to find accommodations where you feel safe , always welcome and comfortable , and where they understand your needs. At the Whitney Inn in Hamden , I not only have these things but even much more. The location is great , easy access to major highway's , extremely clean , and always treated with respect and an " whatever I can do for you attitude ". I attribute this treatment to Sandy , the manager , and her entire staff ! It is an Inn that I would not only highly recommend , but be extremely comfortable in bringing my family to stay !! read more

This is the filthiest room I have ever stayed in. I thought it was like a residence inn or marriot. I am here right now sitting on the bed and had to throw a pillow off of it because it had hair and cigarette ashes on it. I do not think I will be getting under the covers. I could give a laundry list of things that are wrong but I will spare you the details. Do not stay here unless it is a complete emergency.
