Can someone explain why they are called "wisdom teeth"? I mean, they don't make you smarter than you already are, right? We should call them "crowding teeth" or "too far away to brush teeth" or my personal fave, "two teeth that will mess up the thousands your parents paid in dental work unless you get them yanked teeth." God I'm brilliant. That'll catch on like wildfire. Anyway, I had to get my two upper wisdom teeth pulled and was not looking forward to the experience with all this "you'll look like a chipmunk" talk I kept hearing. Nonetheless, I didn't want the thousands I had invested in my veneers to be wasted, so before those bad boys pushed my other teeth too much, I called Dr. Tanabe for an appointment and had my consultation. Despite the pleasantness of the consultation, I was afraid, I was petrified. I made the appointment, stocked up on soft foods and prepared for the agony of what would be, no doubt, a horrific experience. I walked into Dr. T's office ready for battle. iPod set to "upbeat" tunes to make me feel better, mom ready to pick me up after my surgery, I was sweatin' yo. I sat down, got my shots to numb me up. The doctor walked in, greeted me, and went to work. No more than 2 minutes later, I was less two wisdom teeth. The song I had picked to start the endeavor wasn't even over yet!! Seriously, it was no big deal. He is a gifted extractor. I was given my custom ice packs, gauze, painkillers and told that the doc would check in on me in a few hours. Later that evening, not a service, not a nurse, but Dr. Tanabe himself called me to see if I was ok. Now THAT is personal service! Overall, it was a pretty cool experience! I only wish I had more wisdom teeth to be pulled...and that is quite the testimony for Dr. Tanabe right there. read more

Dr Tanabe explains everything very clearly and his skill as an oral surgeon is as good as it gets. I have experienced very little pain after the procedures I have had. As a young adult I had many oral surgeries and I remember all the difficult recoveries. Now as an "older" man, I wish Dr Tanabe had been there instead! I was sitting in the waiting room when Carlos B came in ..... his side of the story is not quite what happened. He was more than 25 minutes late, he never apologized at all and was really short with the front office girls. He never said anything about a train, only that his daughter got out of school late. He then stormed out when they asked for his paperwork . The office is wonderful, the office staff is super friendly and Dr Tanabe is so patient and explains everything and is so nice. I had all 3 (yes, I only had 3) wisdom teeth removed a week ago. Despite being petrified of the surgery and being put under anesthesia, Dr Tanabe made me feel nothing but the utmost comfort and assurance about what I was about to go through. In the blink of an eye, It was over. He sent me home with ice packs and detailed instructions on post-surgery home care. I was feeling only minimal pain, as expected. Very pleased. Like all the others who wrote reviews, he gave me a personal phone call that night to make sure I was doing okay. About two evenings later, I developed an infection with a lot of pain in one of my gaps (probably due to my own negligence). I called the next morning right when they opened and the receptionist told me to come in as soon as possible. I'm sure he had other patients, yet he took the time to thoroughly assess me. He flushed and suctioned out the infected hole and promptly prescribed antibiotics and offered more pain medicine if I needed it. By that very evening, I felt SO much better and I was back on track with recovery. I had a follow up appt yesterday and he said everything was looking fine. I feel great. And let me just add that the ambiance in the office is so peaceful... beautiful large colorful prints of ocean waves and soothing Hawaiian music helped ease my nerves so much. Hats off to Dr. Tanabe for his attentiveness and genuine care for his patients. I would recommend him to anybody within a day's drive from the office. If I could give 10 stars I would not think twice about it!! read more

(1/2) This is the first part of my review, I walked into the office, looked around and thought it was clean and very spacious. No one was there, aside from two ladies behind the desk. There was a lady at the front desk and another lady sitting behind her in a smaller room (private office) both were staring at me strangely, but I brushed it off. I told the lady at the front desk I had an appointment but I was running slightly late (5min), she asked for filled out paperwork, I told her I didn't have any. She proceeded to grab paperwork for me to fill out, she started to speak quickly and said that I'd have to pay $120 for X-rays, and another fee of about $60.. I interrupted her and asked her if she had gotten the X-rays from my dentist and she said "yes but they don't show all the roots and nerves of your teeth." So I said ok to the fees but we'd have to reschedule because I don't have that kind of money on me and I wasn't aware that I needed to pay for that. She smiled &said that the office tried calling me the Thursday&Friday before which was about 4days before the visit but my phone just said "unavailable." I was puzzled. My phone has been getting calls from my boss, parents, friends and other businesses with no problem. So I told her that's weird what number do you have? At this point I see the lady behind her start swaying in her chair and she looked annoyed. The girl in front of me repeated my number perfectly and I made a point to look at my phone in front of them because maybe I did miss their call. But nope. No missed calls. I told her wow that's weird I have absolutely no missed calls, at this point I'm frowning at my phone thinking wow it's probably my carrier. While I'm still looking at it and looking through the settings the girl behind her starts to speak and says "all your phone said was unavailable, didn't even give me an option to leave a message," I look at her & tell her "well my phones working and I'm getting calls and I clear out my voicemail regularly-" she then cut me off and repeated "well we didn't leave a voicemail because all it said was unavailable," I nodded at her kind of frowning because at that point she was already foreshadowing attitude. So I respond telling her "yes I understand but then again it is kind of weird that I got nothin what so ever." This seemed to agitate her (Maybe she thought I was calling her a liar that she didn't call me but that's not at all what I was trying to communicate) and she quickly picked up a tone & again repeated herself "your phone was unavailable and there was no way to get a hold of you," I gave her an annoyed tone in response and told her " I understand that, what could I have done about that though?" She then put her hands up and said "well I'm just letting you know!" She said it in way that made it sound like I was the one being rude or overreacting. I responded saying " I understood the first first couple of times I was told." She then got up and walked away. I turned my attention to the girl in front of me again & asked if there was still time to be seen, but the girl apologized &said we'd have to reschedule. Which was really their fault, why take up so much of my time like that? I'm thinking they just didn't wanna see me or tell the Dr. about the situation. I told them I'd call back with a date&left. So I called the office back to set the date the same day & I expressed that I wanted to speak to either a manager or the Dr about what had happened. The girl that answered (Ivette) then told me I could talk to the office manager which is the girl that was talking to me earlier (the one that had rudely talked to me) she said her name & I didn't catch it. So I ended up saying never mind & hung up with her. I told my parents about the situation, they demanded I call again to speak to someone. So I call the office again & I explained that I need to talk to someone about the situation. So I asked if I could speak to the doctor and they told me he wasn't there, I asked for the office managers name & the girl nervously says she can't disclose that information. This girl literally gives her name every time she answers & she had given me the office managers name before so why couldn't she do so again? So I ask her when will the doctor be there? She said she can't say. Then I ask her so id have to make an appointment 2months away from now and talk to him then and get that girls name too two months from now? And she smartly said "yes, I guess so." My insurance will only cover me for the next two months or so for this procedure, scheduling an appointment takes a couple of months so if I do go back I'd have to pay out of pocket now. They took too much time repeating themselves that they couldn't get a hold of me to tell me about the hidden fees (ironic) & thus refused to see me my scheduled day. I'm sure they're great here but make no mistake if they have an off day you're gonna have an off couple of months. read more

I got my botton two wistom teth pulled out at my general dentist. They took a very long time and was extremely painful. I left the office looking like a tough girl who just escaped from a fight. When i needed my top tooth pulled out, I decided to go to Dr. Tanabe, the specialist my friend told me about. I went to Dr. Tanabe to get my wisdom tooth pulled out. I was so nervous when I first went in for consultation. Dr. Tanabe walked into the room and explained in detail what he would be doing. He is very professional and answered all my questions before I went into surgery. **Note: My wisdom tooth grew horizontally instead of vertically, so he had to cut open to dig out my toth** I was still skeptical when after he explained everything. I mean, how can pulling out my wisdom tooth be so easy (it is.. after all.. full of wisdom). I have to admit i was wrong. The procedure was just as simple and fast as he said it would be. The anesthetic hurt a little (like always). The actual procedure only took 2minutes! He even pulled my tooth out in whole. I got to keep in as a present! The surgery over all was quick and painless. He gave me an ice pack for the night and told me to take pain killed if i needed to. There wasn't The surgery was very quick and painless. I had minimal bleeding and swelling. The night after my surgery, Dr. Tanabe himself called to make sure I was doing fine. I was doing great and was munching on ice cream at the time. He is awesome. read more

My experience with Dr. Theodore Tanabe and his associates was absolute pleasant, enjoyable, and easy. I had scheduled to get all four of my wisdom teeth to be pulled in his office, and I must say I am very happy I decided to have this surgery at Dr. Tanabe's office. Leading up to my surgery, the office secretaries and dental assistants gave me at least two phone calls of reminding me of my surgery date and went through a checklist of what I should to prepare for having my wisdom teeth pulled (such as what to wear, to not eat, and to have someone ready to drive me home). They were very kind and I thought that was great because I was really busy the week prior to my surgery date so it was greatly appreciated that they called. I had decided to be put under for the surgery. Dr. Tanabe and his dental assistant were SO professional and went slow to make sure I was totally conformable before they proceeded. The surgery went great and everything went as planned. I had a normal amount of pain as the sedatives were wearing off, and nothing felt abnormal. So my mother drove me home and for the rest of the night I felt fine. I was expecting to be in horrible pain for days but my previous perception was quite wrong. I just did as what I was instructed to do and the next few days were easy to manage. I might I add, my cheeks were hardly chubby from swelling! My friends had warned me of chubby checks but I was spared from that! :) I returned to classes and work in 3 days which was going fine, but unfortunately I had tried to eat a burrito (after being on a soup and mashed potato diet) and I ate it too fast and a rough part of the tortilla had tugged at my stitches. I was profusely bleeding all night (literally for about 5 hours). I called the office as soon as they opened the following day and had me come in. I know Dr. Tanabe was fully booked at that time but he still fit me in. He restitched my burrito wound and made sure that sort of bleeding wouldn't occur again. He absolutely checked everything out and made sure everything was going well. Dr. Tanabe even called my cellphone later that night to make sure I was feeling better. He definitely cares on your wellbeing and takes all the precautions. One thing I learned about him is that you can call him at any hour of the day or night if you experiencing a problem, which I think is awesome. Its been almost 3 weeks since my surgery and everything worked out great! Like I said: very professional staff/assistants, very comfortable, great job on surgery, and very easy and manageable to have this surgery done! read more

It's only been a few hours since I had my molars pulled and I feel great. Dr. Tanabe's skill and precision left my mouth with little bleeding and feeling better then the last time I had this similar procedure done. Customer service by staff was the best I had in a while. Like many others, I have been debating whether or not to have my wisdom teeth pulled due to my orthodontist's recommendation. None of them was causing any pain or trouble, but my orthodontist said its always better to take wisdom teeth out, so I began my research on wisdom teeth extraction. One of my friends took out his wisdom teeth at Dr. Tanabe's office, and he said there wasn't any swelling and the process went seamlessly. After hearing his positive experience, I decided to book a consultation there as well. Today was my consultation and I came out a happy person! I brought my X-Ray (taken at my orthodontist's office) with me, and Dr. Tanabe gave me his honest opinion about whether or not to do the surgery. Turns out I didn't even have to pull out my wisdom teeth as of this moment! I was pleasantly surprised because all I've been hearing from doctors are "you should pull them out" without really understanding why. Thank you Dr. Tanabe for being honest and so easy to talk to. I highly recommend Dr. Tanabe. The office has a nice calm relaxing vibe with a tasteful Hawaiian theme to it. I'm 37 and finally decided to have all four wisdom teeth taken out. I had heard nothing but horror stories about getting your wisdom teeth out, especially being older. I was very nervous and frightened about having the surgery done. Needless to say I was frightened for nothing. All I remember was asking the nurse questions one minute and waking up from the surgery the next minute. It was over in a blink of an eye. My cheeks didn't even swell up that badly. As long as I stayed on my pain medication I didn't feel any pain. I would almost forget that I just had my teeth taken out. I scheduled an appointment for my daughter to see Dr. Tanabe based on a recommendation from her orthodontist. After waiting almost 2 months to see the doctor. (that was the soonest they had available) we showed up 15 minutes late due to a long train that was stopped on the tracks. When we arrived, I apologized for being late and was rudely interrupted by the receptionist at the front desk telling me that we were late and she would have to check with the doctor to see if he was still willing to see us. It is amazing how they are OK making patients wait for way more than 15 minutes after a scheduled appointment to see the doctor but become rude when someone is a bit late. I definitely do not recommend this office due to the rudeness from the front office staff. We will never know if the doctor is good or not since we have decided to take our business elsewhere. read more

Dr. Tanabe's staff are the rudest most unprofessional people I've ever had to deal with. When making an appointment I asked if they could find out from my insurance if they cover the consultation. Their response was "we'll if they don't then it's just around hundred dollars, so you should be able to cover it since it isn't that much money". I told them that spending $100 every time I have a consultation isn't something I'm interested in doing or can afford. Also, how rude is it to say that to someone and just assume they have money lying around?! Anyways, after trying to convince this woman to make the call, she did and called me back 30 minutes later. She said that she was able to confirm with my insurance that they would cover everything and I wouldn't have to pay anything. Getting to the office was okay, there was hand sanitizer and things seemed safe (fyi this is during covid times). I sat in the chair and Dr. Tanabe came in but he took off his mask during the exam and to talk to me. It made me pretty uncomfortable that a Dr. that specifically works on people's mouths was standing over and next to me without a mask on. He looked in my mouth, we talked, took a scan, and I was out of there in 20 minutes. A month later I get a bill in the mail from their office for $115...even after I was told that I wouldn't have to pay by their own staff. I called them to try to figure out why I'm getting this bill after I was told before I made the appointment that I wouldn't have to pay for a consultation. The woman (Lannette) literally told me that "it isn't their job to spoon feed me". They took zero responsibility for receiving false information and passing it on to me. I asked if they could call the person back from my insurance company (they had the name of the insurance person they talked to) and figure out why all of a sudden my insurance isn't covering it and she said "we would never be able to get ahold of the same person". So basically when she said they did everything they could it meant doing literally the absolutely bare minimum. My insurance was out of their network and so they tried to use that as an excuse for relaying to me false information. I knew it was out of network, which is specifically why I had them confirm with me BEFORE I made the appointment. I just can't believe how rude both people I talked to on the phone were to me and how they did absolutely nothing to help me out. They honestly only care about getting paid and don't care at all who does it. Just an fyi, I did pay the bill. I'm writing this review to hopefully save someone future struggle. If they are out of your network don't go to them. You're basically a second class citizen to them and will be treated as such. read more

Dr. Tanabe is truly an ANGEL! He is so sweet after having my wisdom teeth removed he called to check up on me and when I left a voicemail he returned my call quickly. He has removed some of my grandma's teeth and done an implant on my uncle and removed my sister's wisdom teeth and all have been happy and turned out well. Even when my daughter had an accident and damaged her baby teeth; I was frazzled and didn't know where to turn he gave me an excellent pediatric Dentist referral and told me what to do which reassured me. Today is the second day of my wisdom teeth removal, I am currently 6 months pregnant, and the right bottom of the wisdom is impacted and infected as well, it started to swelling & bothering me, so I wanted to get it done no matter how scare I was. I found Dr. Tanabe on yelp, and I am glad I did, I see people were commenting how not painful with their procedures so I decided to give it a try, also the dental office that I went told me that they had to put me to sleep to remove it and I can't do it when I am pregnant. So the bottom wisdom teeth is twice the size of the back of my teeth, I was expecting that has to hurt at some point, the procedure went smothly and quick, and until today, the pain was very minimal, i didn't need any pain killer and there is no swelling at all, also, everyone in the office are very nice!!
