Restaurants specializing in barbeque are not as widespread in the north as they are down South. There are chains up here, like Famous Dave's, as well as more "upscale" ones like Red Hot & Blue. But, once you've eaten at Whole Hog Cafe, those "other places" won't even register on your scale! My wife and I have eaten here 3 times already, and each time just gets better and better. I've had their beef brisket on 2 of the 3 visits, and while not a big beef eater, I found it to be the best, most tender, least fatty brisket I've ever tasted! She and I have also both had the barbequed chicken, while only I have had the delight of their pulled pork! All of the meats we have dined upon were lean, very flavorful, as well as more than adequate portion-wise! As for their sides, I recommend their chili (good lord, it packs a punch, so make sure you have that cornbread!), as well as their beans and cheesy corn! Like I said, once you've tried Whole Hog Cafe, you won't need to go anywhere else for barbeque! read more

I have been there twice since opening. On first visit i had the Beef Brisket with the number 6 mustard sauce. Both were very good. Today i had the Rib platter with slaw and beans. The ribs were tender and meaty, the beans were off the hook as well as the slaw. tried the different sauces on the Ribs and the sauce choices are all different and a plus to any meat. They let me try Wings that they were trialing to maybe add to the menu. No fryer here, they were smoked, tender and crispy. They need to be added to the menu and will be a big seller. Fantastic place. All the meats are perfectly cooked and the sides are to die for (make sure you try the cheesy corn and cornbread). I have also ordered the family sized dishes for larger events before and it's a ton of food. I highly recommend the place. read more

Yummy yum yum yum. I love good BBQ but it seems like something that most cannot achieve 'round these parts. Red Hot & Blue is an embarrassment to BBQ and why most people south of the Dixie line make fun of us Yankees. Dave's Famous is disgusting and sugary and salty and over seasoned and fake. I am concerned that this restaurant is in a high turnover location and not frequently busy. I would hate for it to close, now that I've found it. I've been twice now, one order we ate in and one to go. Both times the portions looked somewhat small, but no worries - when finished every last drop I was stuffed, so they know how to serve appropriately. Good pricing too. The pulled pork is awesome, dry, with the option to add sauce. I love sauce #2 and for a spicier version the BF loved #3. For a few more dollars you can add a "taste" of another meat with any platter: I tasted the chicken and BF tasted the ribs. His ribs were super small without much meat, he was disappointed. However a coworker swears by their ribs. We'll just have to try again, I suppose, to really decide! I liked the taste of both of my meats, but oddly all our meats were served cold. I guess I'd rather them be cold after cooling from cooking, rather than be reheated up and dried out, but still not a good experience for our sit down meal. My pork when I got the togo platter was nice and hot, not sure why the difference. Baked beans were great, nice slow working spice and delicious pieces of brisket ends in there. My friend told me that Whole Hog was the best BBQ in the greater Philadelphia area and just opened. I finally went tonight and got ribs, brisket, chicken and pulled pork - and beans - and quite literally everything was the best I've had since I moved to Philadelphia 3+ years ago. We finally got around to trying out Whole Hog today on a whim. A one hour drive kind of whim. Our 8 year old daughter tried ribs today for the first time and she was showing off a saucy approving smile. Surprisingly the cornbread was just okay. I think it would have been very good warm. The baked beans and potato salad were different, but a good different that leaves you wanting more. Our son was the only one who liked the cheesy corn. The chicken was average, but the brisket and pulled pork were very good. The only thing that would have improved the protein is if it were served hotter. We really enjoyed sampling all of the delicious sauces as a family and meant to buy some to take home but forgot :( The dining area was very clean and Lauren is a great person to have at the front desk. Not only was she friendly but very helpful answering our questions. We'll be back next time we're in the area. read more

Went to Whole Hog last week and it really blows away any competition... better than Jimmy's, Tommy Gunns or any other Philly-based BBQ joint I have tried. Family -oriented with great prices and quick service and open clean location, it is my new go-to for BBQ. Sauces are excellent and applied by you not the restaurant which is a really good sign IMO. Sides are very good as well. I had the brisket, ribs and pork and sides so feel like I really got a great sense for all the offerings. read more

The food here is without a doubt the best BBQ you will find in Jersey, and perhaps the entire US. Any of the meat options are flavorful, tender, and satisfying one their own. Add one of their signature BBQ sauce options and it's the icing on the cake. The cole slaw is perfection, not too much mayo and never soggy. The fries are drizzled with ranch and cheese sauce so that they all are topped but never sopped and mushy. Cheesy corn, delicious. If do decide to go a healthy route here, the salads are surprisingly good and topped chicken, devine. The ribs, tender as anything. One bite and youre transported to a picnic table in the deep south where you're eating a perfect family recipe passed down for generations. As for the the actual restaurant, it's clean, spacious, and filled with lots of trophies and posters to provide visual interest. I've gotten take out and it's always been quick and spot on. They walk you through the order before they bag it, so you don't have to worry you'll get home and be missing one of your precious items. Something more places should make a habit of. This has become one of our family favorites, and made all other BBQ pale in comparison. read more

Wow, smelled wonderful and tasted even better! Chicken and brisket plates, #1 and #3 sauces. #3 was a little spicy but it balanced well with #1. Cheesy corn was to die for. Large portions. No liquor license, so didn't waste money on drinks, but maybe you could byob. We don't eat pork, but that's not a problem. People were welcoming. Can't wait to go back. Okay, so lets face it...part of being a great restaurant is the experience. Whole Hog Café is very typical of a authentic BBQ restaurant. No liquor license, so BYOB. The food is really very good. Now there are different types of BBQ, depending on where you are. This is Arkansas BBQ, and yes you can tell it is smoked for hours. The ribs pealed from the bone, the pulled pork was not salty, and the beans and potato salad were spot on. My son and I ate dinner with drinks for $24.00, and compared to pricing, I feel I got a good deal for the quantity and quality I expected. We have eaten at similar restaurants in the area, but they are too commercial, and frankly, the quality of BBQ I am used to, simply is not there. Best BBQ I've had in South Jersey without a doubt. The brisket isn't quite what I get in Texas, but it's still really good considering the location. The sausage is good. Went to Whole Hog Cafe today with my girlfriend. Left a little disappointed. I am an avid smoker myself and love this kind of BBQ. We ordered a platter to share. The brisket seemed dry and a little flavorless, the pulled pork was fine, and the ribs seemed to lack meat on the bone (seemed small for baby backs). The sides we got tasted good. Cheesy corn, volcano chili, and the beans were good, as was the corn bread. The sauces were ok. nothing that great. BBQ is only as good as the rub they use to flavor the meat, and It didn't come through very well for us. Would had liked to taste that more. One of those kind of places I could take it or leave it. Probably would put this chain on the same par as Famous Daves which happens to be right down the street. Leaving Whole Hog Cafe had me longing for Dinosaur BBQ. This was one of those places I can take it or leave. One of those I tried it once and don't have to wonder about it anymore. Probably wont be returning just for the simple fact that the BBQ didn't live up to par with all the trophy's that slap you in the face when you walk in. read more

The beef brisket was very good, tender and flavorful. The smoked sausage was also very good. My complaint was the portion size. I ordered the two meat plate and was told that you get 4 oz of one meat and 6 oz of the other meat. I have to question the portion size of brisket as being 4 oz. It looked much smaller. There seemed to be 6 oz of sausage. The cheesy corn and chili were good. The other order was a two meat plate with pulled pork and pulled chicken. The pork was dry dry dry. The corn bread was good. I really wanted to like this place, but, unfortunately, I didn't. I found the chicken on the chicken platter to be dry and not very tasty. It didn't seem like it just came out of the smoker. My husband's 1/2 rack rib platter was overpriced for the four or five ribs. They didn't have much meat or taste. The side salad was good, though, as was the roll. The baked beans were fine. I only liked three of the six sauces on the table. I did see that some sandwiches others had ordered looked good, but I don't know how they tasted. read more

My friend and I tried this place and found it to be terrible. The ribs were salty. All 6 of the sauces were poor. The corn bread was bad. The bun was doughy and stuck in my teeth. The cole slaw and baked beans were mediocre at best. The only acceptable item was the fountain soda. Go to The Pub or Famous Dave's, each of which is within 10 minutes. Or go to Red Hot and Blue, not my favorite but much better and literally one minute away. As my friend said, if you have any enemies, send them here! It was a complete waste of money! read more

Whole Hog Cafe fills a void in the Cherry Hill area. There are other bbq restaurants in the area, but The Whole Hog Cafe beats them all out. Unfortunately, by the time we arrived, the brisket was sold out, however another patron told me it was exceptional. I tried the sampler (substituting sausage for brisket) to try a little of everything. It was great the sides were exceptional. The short of the review is I couldn't recommend it highly enough. Certainly better than Famous Dave's or Red White and Blues. If the brisket was available, I may have given 5stars. Be aware it's byob. read more

My new favorite Barbeque spot. Just beat out Famous Daves since my last couple orders of ribs there were subpar. This place has Great smoked ribs that are as good as it gets. 3rd time there and ribs are never dry. Sauce is awesome. Not crazy about beans but my wifey likes. Cornbread has real corn kernels. I have NEVER written a review for a restaurant. But the Whole Hog Cafe definitely deserves a moment of my time to share my experience with you. There is a new BBQ master in town! The ribs are to DIE FOR! They FALL OF THE BONE and are SO meaty! My hubby got the two meat platter and declared the brisket and pulled pork were DELICIOUS! Our son got the nachos with chicken. The chicken was the most tender and flavorful chicken we have ever tasted. Although we did wish that they had used real cheese on the nachos instead of cheese-wiz (we are not fans of the fake cheese paired with that MELT IN YOUR MOUTH chicken, it just seems wrong.) They have 6 homemade BBQ sauces for you to try, we loved them all but our favorite was the Volcano sauce that you have to ask for at the register. The only thing missing from their menu is WINGS! Come on Whole Hog (Chris the owner, I know you're reading this)! Add them to the menu already! read more

Sorry but not feeling it! The entrance to the place is horrible! No signage telling you that you have to go down a side street to get there! The place smelled new and it was clean! I could smell the smoke! The set up was very odd! The menu on the wall was so small that you could barely read it. The cashier wasn't very friendly either and she didn't know much about the menu. A disappointment was they only offer 3 sides! They also have packaged chips!? Get rid of the chips and add more sides! The dining room area was clean and open. The ceiling was half opened and it looked like it wasn't completely finished which was odd. Now to the food. The ribs had no smoke flavor whatsoever and tasted like they were cooked in an oven. They were very salty too! Also they didn't taste fresh as dis anything in the platter. Pulled chicken was good but a little dry, pork was very mushy and again was tasteless and had no smoke flavor to it. The brisket was the biggest disappointment. It tasted like overcooked roast beef, had no smoke flavor and the most important thing no smoke ring! The potato salad had a strange taste to it. The slaw was ok and the beans were surprisingly good but a little too sweet for my taste. We ordered another set of ribs after which tasted completely 100% different then the first set we received (but still they weren't good). I like the options of sauces on the tables but they all tasted the same! When we left the line was out the door. I had to cut through 30 people to get out of the place. They should have made a separate exit area so you aren't walking though a crowd of people to get out of the place! I know the just opened but people this isn't BBQ! read more
