I'm far from an influencer. But I feel it is in the public interest to comment on the quality at Whole Hog on Guadalupe in Santa Fe, NM. What a disappointment. In the past I thought they had the best potato salad and coleslaw recipe ever. But recently they us served sides that IMO surely must have been purchased at the grocery store. Yesterday we purchased a pound of pulled pork, a quart of their ?potato salad? a pint of their ?coleslaw? all for $47.00, tax included, and no drinks. The pulled pork tasted like stuff I get at Costco, only drier. We chose to deep six the potato salad. Shame on you WHOLE HOG of Santa Fe. read more

Parking is limited, so the free parking attracted us. We checked reviews online, and the majority were excellent. As we entered, the heavenly smell wafted through the place. That clinched the deal. The gentleman who took our order was friendly and efficient. When he asked if we wanted to go cups or glasses for our drinks, we opted for to go cups. The drink machine was in the dining area, and refills were complimentary. We also got our sandwiches with the Coleslaw to the side, not on the meat, in the bun. By the time we got our drinks, and found a place to park our butts, we got our sandwiches. Husband had the pulled pork and I had the pulled chicken. Both were moist and tasty - even without sauce. Husband said the beans were spicy. They had a kick. The coleslaw was dry, sweet, and very good. We had 6 sauces from which to choose - our favorites were the sweet ones - #1 and #5. We savored every delicious bite. I ate half of mine without the bun, to get the full chicken flavor. It was pleasant eating inside. Frank Sinatra serenaded us over the sound system. Other diners were in our area, & we were all spread out. Note: If you are looking for a job, they're hiring as of 5/26/21. But you wouldn't know they were short staffed. Service was exceptional! This place is the real deal. All the meats are as good as the best I've ever had, and the sides are also excellent, not a dud in the bunch, all for very reasonable prices. Service is quick and to the point but pleasant and knowledgeable as needed. Dining room is pretty basic but this place is about the food, at least for me. You step up to the counter and place your order from the big board on the right. There are a variety of sandwiches and sides. You can buy the meats by the pound too. We each chose a brisket sandwich. One with the tastiest potato salad that I have ever had, except my own. The other was a great juicy coleslaw. We ordered a side of cucumber salad with red onion and a tangy dressing. We took our table to be served. Each table has a 6 pack of BBQ sauces to meet your own pallet. We like the thick molasses spicy #5 the best. They also had a volcano sauce, but we were chicken! You get your own soft drinks in the room on the other side, but can order a bottled beer out of the tall refrigerator. Manuel, is the cook, and he did a great job. The sandwiches were stacked with tons of meat. Z was the young helper gal who took our order. Everyone was very pleasant. We will be back. Came back after several years and tried the brisket and pulled pork. I strongly advise you skip the brisket. It is exceptionally tough and not smoky at all. The pulled pork was better, still not as smoky as I like but it was moist and tender which I appreciated. Still love the potato salad. The baked beans and Cole slaw are pretty standard. Like other BBQ places, you order your meal at the counter, and pay. We ordered the Whole Hog platter with a small side of mac and cheese. After paying, we sat and waited for our orders to be brought out. Our friends ordered cucumber salad, rotisserie chicken, brisket and mac and cheese. The dining area was filled with awards for 1st, 2nd, 4th place in BBQ competitions. Very impressive! The tables had a 6 pack of BBQ sauces for you to add to your meats. My favorite was #4 (tangy, sour and mildly spicy) and Volcano (burning spiciness). You just needed a dot of volcano sauce to open up your taste buds and the flavors. My favorites were the gooey creamy mac and cheese with pockets of spicy green chile, the juicy pulled pork covered in jus and the sweet saucy ribs. One customer liked the ribs so much, he ordered 2-3 racks of ribs as take-out and there were no ribs for the rest of the day! The only problem with the BBQ was the brisket. My Texan friend told me a true mark of the BBQ restaurant was their brisket. Well, if that's true, Whole Hog fell short of the mark because the brisket was soggy, missing a smoke ring and tasted of boiled beef. The sauces were interesting, although not too much variation; would have been nice to see a mustard-based Carolina-style sauce, but I understand that it's not popular in this area. Super underrated spot! Everyone seems to go for Cowgirl BBQ across the street which admittedly has a more lively atmosphere, but don't overlook Whole Hog! Big portion sizes, super high quality meats and great prices. You order at the counter to keep things simple and costs lower. Free refills on sodas too! Highly recommend the Mac and cheese which is actually pretty light (as far as Mac and cheese goes) yet very flavorful thanks to the chili's, as well as the chicken which is super juicy. Holy hog, this place is THE REASON to come to Santa Fe. I had the beef brisket sandwich, and it borders on gourmet, and surpasses sublime--perfect medium-rare on the inside, a light, flavorful char on the outside. Lean, tender, juicy. Six different varieties of barbecue sauce to choose from to adorn the star of the show, each well described to make a precise choice to fit one's mood. Even the side of coleslaw showed attention to detail and was both fresh, flavorful, and delicious. My wife had the baked potato with shredded chicken. Again, fantastic. Best we've ever had. She got through about half, so we packaged the rest to go--along with the kids' leftover slaw. On a whim I just before checkout I plucked two chocolate chip cookies and two brownies from the counter. The kids liked the slaw and would've eaten theirs were they not saving room for this desert. Smart move, kids--soft and rich. The best we've ever had. So much better than Cowgirl. Decided to try Whole Hog this visit and so glad we did. My husband and I decided to share the Whole Hog platter so we could try a little of everything. They also gave me an extra side of mac and cheese. The platter had pulled pork, ribs and brisket and all were delicious. Very moist and flavorful. I tried the potatoes salad which was really good and husband had the beans. He likes spice so he added some of the hot bbq to them and that made them. It's rare that a place qualifies as Best in the Nation. But the Whole Hog Café may warrant that status. I've eaten a lot of barbecue all over the US. And I certainly never expected to find this quality in New Mexico (sorry, Chamber of Commerce). But I did! On my recent visit, I had the pulled pork and sausage combo plate, with baked beans and potato salad as my two sides. The pork was absolutely succulent - I wish I had ordered a double order of the pork - not that I didn't like the sausage; it was great, too. Sauces were served in the traditional style - on the side. Each table was provided with a nice selection of six different choices. Plus, you can ask for the Volcano if you're looking for something really hot. I tried a couple of the sides, including a little bit of the Volcano, and enjoyed all of them. The Whole Hog has won numerous international awards. It's pretty easy to see why. read more

We stopped by here during the annual burning of Zozobra celebration (we weren't aware it was occurring so extra fun for some newbie visitors!) and were extremely satisfied with some last minute BBQ.
