This place really used to be something special. I remember the days when I'd walk in and Scott would greet me with a large smile and call out my name. If not Scott, his staff was wonderful. They made me love everything about New York flavor, while keeping the southern charm. Even when they were swamped the love would somehow bleed through. Recently I was in there and my entire experience was horrifying. I cam in late for a Wholy Bagel day, around 11:30 a.m. Though I was only one of two people in line and clearly in no rush there was no usual attempt at conversation. That was all well and good until I heard one Lady cal the other a bitch and subsequently swear at her often repeating the word bitch as well as the F bomb well infront of customers. Though the tall white woman at the register sometimes responded in kind I was shocked and at first was about to protest asking the seemingly abrasive Mexican woman if she was the manager, inn protest to how she was treating her employee, the white woman at the register. Upon asking this question I was so shocked when the, "employee," at the register turned out to be the owner and respond t my query. At such a loss for words I think I mumbled off some irrelevant question about the cost of pies or something. I was shocked. Not only was the language simply offensive, I was shocked that any owner would tolerate an employee speaking to them that way, let alone in front of two different customers. Furthermore, what's tat say about the staff working the place. I've seen a lot of new faces since Scott left, and along with the cold indifferent service, so too has the seemingly great taste of Wholy Bagel slackened. If you get your bagel toasted you get a variety from a burnt sandwich to a lukewarm bagel. There seems to be a bitchy attitude when you ask the new staff to not make an error you were used t them NOT making, (we miss you so much Scott) and god forbid they make a mistake they are more concerned about getting the exact change you owe them prior to fixing any mistakes they ma have made. It's a very cheap touch. My recent experiences have left me simply shocked and devastated. Hands down this used to be a jewel and true gem of Austin. Now with so many things that get turned into a money first ti heck with everything that made this place every bit as much Austin Texas, as it was New York New York last, it's no longer an Austin staple and has left a bad flavor and worse memory on m tongue and in my stomach. Just like all the disappearing innovations like the constant new items on the ever evolving menu to the smiling faces of staff that either new me or at least made an effort to, I feel a desperate longing for the bagelry I fell in love with. It is with a profound sadness I see you fade into mediocrity. read more

We gave this spot a shot on Sunday 3/14/2021 at 11:30 AM and encountered the worst costumer service. Women late 30's light blue eyes took FOREVER to take our order and then it took FOREVER to receive our order. We finally get our order after waiting 30 mins, and our order was wrong. When we mentioned to her that we ordered the #5, she rolled her eyes, rudely grabbed the bag back and told us we didn't order the correct bagel. Umm, what? My friend literally said the bagel spinach asiago bagel. How do you confuse that with anything else? She obviously didn't like working there, and she said as much to us while we waited.. and waited and waited for our bagels to finally be finished. It was awkward. Just an overall bad experience. I can't support a business that allows their employees to be rude to their customers and talk bad about their employer to their customer making it uncomfortable for everyone standing there. Took 45 mins to grab a few bagels, that were average at best. They also weren't toasted enough. read more

Sad to have to leave a negative review but... I have been a customer of wholly bagels for years as they were the best bagels around by far. I had not been in in several months, But I ventured in this weekend. I ordered a dozen bagels and several other items. Couldn't wait to get home to enjoy these little yummies. Sad to report the bagels were not enjoyable. They were very hard, to the consistence of day or 2 day old bagels. (While I am not saying they were old, as I don't know if they were or not, they did not taste fresh). 3 members of my family said the exact same thing... so we tossed our bagels in the trash :-( When I called to share my negative experience owner with the new owner Nicole, She was less than pleasant...sadly. Long story short, I was firmly told there is nothing wrong with her bagels. Hopefully my experience with her poor customer service and very hard bagels was a fluke. While I will never be a customer again I hope they can rectify the issues. read more

Yahoo! Thank God Wholy Bagel is open now! I have been waiting for a long time! Well, it was a hard decision what to get because there were so many choices: Poppy, Cinnamon Raisin, Blueberry, Sesame, Salted, and Jalapeno Cheddar were some bagel choices. I got the Sesame. Then it came to deciding which cream cheese I wanted: Walnut Raisin, Scallion, Blueberry, Strawberry, or Veggie. Walnut Raisin looked and sounded good, so I got that. I guess I looked tired because the guy offered me some coffee, and I accepted. The bagel was excellent, fresh, soft, but still firm, and the coffee was to die for, I really needed that. They had so many more different things to get as well, I will have to try them next time I go in. The breakfast bagels sounded really good. These are the best bagels in the region by far. The texture is perfect - when I've been to New York, I've always tried to remember the real good stuff, and the ones at Wholy Bagel, I dare say, may be better. You won't find such cream cheeses up in New England; jalapeno cheddar, loaded Texan, roasted tomato... these people are creative beyond a doubt. I value spicy food, but if you don't then you won't find this place to be all that radical. Combining amazing bagels with spicy cream cheese turns out to be incredible, and something uniquely Texan that you won't find anywhere else in the world. Wholy Bagel has been named Austin's best bagel place for a long time, and it's even gone to the leaderboard on the national scale, and for good reason. I had a great experience at this café that specializes in breakfast, bagels, and sandwiches. The location is convenient, and the outdoor seating area is perfect for enjoying a meal. Even though there was quite a line, the staff worked efficiently, and we were served surprisingly fast. We opted for the bagels and loved the concept of building our own. There was a wide variety of options to choose from, and the result was absolutely delicious. The bagels themselves were fresh and flavorful, and the ingredients were of high quality. They make the BEST bagels....but today at 10:30 am they were very busy and every employee looked harried and overwhelmed let alone grumpy. Long wait as no one seemed to want to get to the waiting folks at register. I had ordered a dozen bagels (that means 14 to Wholy Bagel)...but got home (they staple the bag) and there were only 13. Then the man who does ring me up has that look when I don't add a tip. Well you didn't say "sorry about the wait" or "thanks". GREAT bagels are super important....but customer service counts. In the late 80s Hot Jumbo Bagel was the best bagel in Austin! Now, Nervous Charlie's on north Lamar has the best bagels, but not the atmosphere or lentil soup of HJB on 5th St. Surprisingly, some of the Randall's bagels were (not are) pretty good. Wholy Bagel is okay. Rock Star is okay, too, but only if you get them hot out of the oven. I recently had Rock Star from a convenience store. They were so dry and stale, I took them back. Forget, Central Market (their other baked goods are great) and Whole Foods. read more

After a decade in Texas I thought I would never find a quality bagel shop like back home (New York & New Jersey)... WHOLLY BAGEL is BETTER than home! Hands down the best bagels in town. Only place anything near us Rock Star Bagels. Love regular bagels but the lox bagel sandwich is off the chain. The regular breakfast sandwiches are good but not really my deal. I really wanna try their Taylor ham sandwich but always forget since I like the lox so much. Always busy but worth the wait. Not to mention the nano scopic particles on the inside of the mask that is sprayed with Etheline oxide, and known carcinogen. She did not even offer to take my order and deliver it to me outside. Love these bagels!! Now these are real bagels!! Boiled then baked and have the chewy texture you want from a bagel. I had a last minute party and they helped me out with about 18 bagels, sliced them up and handed them to me in about 5 minutes. The people that work here were also very nice and helpful. After leaving, I checked my account and saw I was charged $10.49 even though my total was $8.47. I usually tip, but didn't this time because of the service, so I was confused about the extra charge. We went back to the shop calmly to ask about it. Instead of trying to help, the staff were dismissive and defensive. One employee insisted the charge wasn't on their end and told me to contact my bank, even though I was just looking for clarification. There was no effort to solve the confusion or apology for how we were treated. This isn't the first time I've experienced rude service from the same employee--she often rushes customers and is unfriendly. I understand mistakes happen, and the charge itself wasn't a big deal. What bothered me was how poorly the situation was handled. Customer service matters, especially when someone comes in with a concern.

My last visit, I ordered two Chorizo, Egg, and Cheese Tacos which really hit the spot. I also love their Croissant Sausage, Egg, and Cheese sandwiches and when I want to overindulge, I'll get an Apple Fritter or Cinnamon Roll which are beyond measure. The owners are very friendly, and you're always greeted with a genuine smile and if you wish to enjoy your snacks inside, there is ample space.

The lady owner who worked there was super sweet and gave my daughters free lollipops. We just got a few donuts and she threw in some free donut holes for us which I thought was so thoughtful.
