Wow! First time visit & it won't be the last! The food is crazy good. Shared a grilled cheese with the boyfriend and it was one of the best I've ever had! No joke. The butter they use is clarified with herbs and just takes the flavor to a whole other level. I mean it's insane to me how good that sandwich was. Every bite and the drive is worth it! I went with the porchetta sandwich this time. The bits of Chicharron are that special piece. Originally I got the grilled cheese with porchetta but the simplicity of the OG is my fav. I tried the kale Cesar as we shared the sandwich and it was a good fresh addition. My favorite item from here will always be the tomato soup. That fresh pesto swirled inside is chefs kiss. I highly recommend taking the time to enjoy to ambiance around. I thought Meat & Bread was fantastic! I arrived at 11am, just as it was about to open. The friendly servers mentioned that they were finishing up baking the bread, which was like music to my ears. I stood in front of the counter and watched the cook chop the meat (I believe for the Porchetta sandwich) as pieces of pork sprayed about. It looked unbelievably delicious. What I love about Austin is that great food is ingrained in the culture. It was a tough choice, but I opted for the Italian Panino sandwich because I was in the mood for deli meat and also got the kale caesar. They packed it for me and I took off on my bike rental headed for any park bench I could find. It was a very hot late June day in Austin - I thought even hotter than where I live in south Florida. They were out of the aoli it came with but offered a basil one instead which offered a unique flavor to the sandwich. Meat & bread is one of my favourite sandwich restaurants here in Austin. Came here quite often during lunch break since it's very convenient for me. One big regret from my recent trip to SXSW in Austin was not finding Meat & Bread earlier. What a find. One of the best prime rib sandwiches I've ever had. I've been wanting to try meat & bread for awhile. They are located in downtown Austin and have also been recognized by michelin when they expanded to Texas. Since they are in downtown, parking is very difficult. I parked at Trader Joe's and bought something cheap to validate my parking for a couple hours and just walked over. I tried their most popular sandwich, the porchetta, as well as the grilled cheese. The porchetta includes crackling and salsa verde. This is my first time having porchetta and it is really similar to porkbelly. The sandwich was pretty solid but I felt like they shoudlve added more salsa verde. It kind of just tasted like meat and bread with the seasoning a little lacking. I actually really liked their grilled cheese much more. They use aged cheddar and sourdough bread. They also allow to add protein to it if you wish. We also asked for the truffle Parmesan dip and they were kind enough to give it to us on the house. The truffle and Parmesan flavors are both bold yet don't overpower each other. I recommend getting this to pair with your sandwiches. I've always wanted to try Meat & Bread, so when working downtown one day I had the perfect opportunity to pick it up for lunch - and I'm glad I did! I placed an order online for pick up and walked over to get it. The restaurant is quite small, positioned across from Intelligentsia, JuiceLand, and Hestia. Since it was my first time ordering, I went for their popular picks: the classic porchetta and the meatball. The sandwiches run from $10-$16 for the sandwich alone, and you can add sides, dips, and drinks. A bit pricy for some, but worth it in my opinion. Service was excellent, and you can watch them making the sandwiches through the glass. Flavor-wise, the sandwiches were fantastic. Generously filled with meat, excellent flavor all around, and finger-licking good. The porchetta is delightful, and I wasn't sure if I would enjoy it as much as I did. I usually don't like to share secrets but because they're so tucked away, and their (most literal) name makes them difficult to search, I feel like Meat and Bread often overlooked as one of the most legit sandwich spots in town. I had heard good things and really wanted to like it, and, man, was I disappointed when I opened it up at home. 1 - everything was smaller than expected - I included a fork for scale in my photo. For $36, I expected a little more food from a takeout place. If this is a large kale salad, I can't even fathom what the small is like! 2 - to say the the chicken salad was sparse is an understatement. For a $14 sandwich, I expected more than 2 oz of chicken in a pile of mayonnaise. I should have gotten the Italian or porchetta. 3 - not only was there a lack of chicken in the chicken salad, but the flavor or the chicken salad was highly unusual. I can be a fan of unusual but this was not a good unusual. I didn't eat the sandwich. I only eat carbs on special occasions and this sandwich did not meet the qualification for diverging from my typical diet. Working for the airline Yelp is a flight crew's best friend. Saw that Meat & Bread was highly rated and not too far from our layover hotel. Walked the half of a mile in an unusual blistering heat, even for Texas. But the walk and sweat were worth it. I was greeted by Ernesto the owner of Meat & Bread. Very personable gentleman with a big personality and makes one hell of a sandwich. I chose the Porchetta sandwich and it did not disappoint. I'm still craving the cracklings that were included with the Porchetta in my sandwich. It was delicious. Next time I'm in Austin I will be trying the meatball or the Italian sub. Oh yes. Yesterday was my second visit to Meat & Bread and let me tell you: the staff here were even more cheerful than last time. It means a lot to me when people working at an establishment are warm, engaging and even slightly curious, and I feel the folks here are 100% authentic. As a person that works mostly freelance and dines alone often, these interactions often make my day brighter. The sandwiches they are serving up here are wonderful as well. On my first visit I got the porchetta and it was remarkable. A strong offering to say the least & I highly recommend it. Yesterday it was pretty cold and I went with the suggestion of one of the owners and got the meatball sandwich but served "grilled cheese" style. Kind of like a very succulent and decadent panini style and my mouth is watering just thinking about it. The food is delectable and the enthusiasm of the owners and staff speaks for itself. When I die and go to heaven, I want God waiting for me at the pearly Gates with the meatball sandwich I had today. That is a memory I could spend eternity reliving. He asked me how I liked it, I just said "Tell the owner I said 'Bravo, Sir.'" I've had meatballs that came in first place in meatball competitions that weren't nearly as good as the ones here. They are not too breaded, meaty and very tender and deep richness and complexity of flavor. The sauce they use is perfectly seasoned and flavored to not cover the taste and quality of the meat, even though the sauce is also clearly very good and high quality. The bread is obviously fresh and more artisan style, though again kept simple to let the meatballs shine. Though there is a delicious seasoned melted cheese they put on it that really pops along with the other flavors. Also it was served with a somewhat strong mustard and mild hot sauce on the side that also really hit the spot; if you like those sauces (which I very much do) they are an excellent addition. Great choices of sauce to go with it. Awesome experience. I highly recommend it. I knew I found a great place because the place is called "Meat and Bread" and I walked in and saw that the menu was a total of about four things. Those are always the best places. We ordered their signature porchetta sandwich, kale caesar salad topped with chicken parm, and a meatball sub. Each sandwich had a good amount of meat and other toppings, and the salad was fresh and flavorful. Our favorite was the meatball sub with gremolata, kale, and Parmesan aioli. I only rate Meat & Bread 4 stars due to their confusing and potentially incorrect menu board - we were not sure why chicken parm was listed as out of stock when one of the employees suggested that it be added to the salad, which was then done, and the fact that none of the workers were wearing gloves, including the cashier who was also handling food, despite the boxes of gloves right in front of them.
