That being said, we decided to stay two nights prior to embarkation day. We wanted to walk in, get settled after the 7 (=/-) hour drive and relax. The hotel had everything we needed - a full kitchen, a clean and perfectly running shower, clean and comfortable beds and a wonderful view. The proximity of the hotel to the port was perfect. All eight of us were able to get our belongings together and not stress on getting parking. The continental breakfast was great as well. The staff was beyond amazing and during one of our nights we were able to watch the UFC fight downstairs in the lobby with a crew of construction workers. One of the staff attendants gave my girls crayons and coloring paper. She sat down and helped them with their art and it was honestly precious.

All in all I'd stay here again, but have begun to notice that Hilton is not updating their properties very often. Although almost a "Diamond for Life" I'm gravitating more and more to Marriott properties after re-achieving Diamond status for the year. Marriotts have upped their game and have some gorgeous places to stay with modern accommodations which has now become a reason not to stay at Hilton properties...! This resort honestly belongs in Hilton's Curio collection. It's much like the old Embassy Suites in Port Hueneme, it didn't resemble another Embassy Suites on the planet so ultimately became a Curio collection named Zachari Dunes. This Double Tree will remind you of no other like it, but still a cool place to stay!

After checking into my first room, I noticed a faint smell of mildew, and the hallways being abnormally muggy and humid. As I started unpacking, I noticed several ants in the bathroom. Not a big deal usually - but they were sporadically all over the place which was annoying. After calling the office, they promptly got me another room on another floor. No big deal, right? As I walk in, there's a mold across the comforter and the AC unit had an error message. I called the front desk again and the person said "that's not mold on the comforter" it's just the liquid that dripped down from the AC unit onto the bed since it was just fixed (it wasn't fixed). Also, there were ants in this bathroom too! The office then put me in another room...guess what? Ants there too, along with the entry of the hotel carpet being lifted and frayed from use. At this point, I asked for a refund which they had no issues providing and I left and booked a nicer hotel. I don't like writing these type of reviews, but I've stayed here before in the past and had no issues. I'm wondering if there was a change in ownership. For a hotel to don the name Hilton, you expect something good and consistency. Unfortunately, this hotel missed the mark. I hope they figure out whatever it is they need to figure out to refresh this place because the location is great and it could be a pretty awesome hotel being so close to the port. For now, I'd recommend avoiding.

Open Air Homes was caught dismantling and cleaning out a clandestine fentanyl lab in my home on check out day. Midway through the rental, my neighbors contacted me alarmed about "druggies". Open Air Homes assured me that they were in the home and everything was great, and that my neighbors must be seeing them ordering a lot of food deliveries. When I returned earlier than Open Air Homes anticipated (on the renter's check out day), I walked in on my house packed with Open Air Homes employees-- my ceiling was collapsed, holes in the walls, heat dismantled, windows blacked out, almost everything stolen or destroyed, and blood stains on the walls. The cleaners told me that the house had been full of addicts the entire rental, and that Open Air Homes allowed it. There were money counting machines and duffel bags in the garage that LAPD told me not to touch. The neighbors had photos of a car that was parked at the house during the rental-- that car was registered to a man in Wisconsin who was killed in a standoff with police in Wisconsin two days before his car was at my house in LA. The neighbors also said there were tall blonde drag queens in the house partying. Evidence left behind was connected to drag queen celebrities in LA and Palm Springs. When I emailed for help, Open Air Homes CEO sent me an email back saying that it's impossible that drugs were made in my house because "the neighbors would have smelled it", which he backed up with a copy and paste from ChatGPT. He pushed me off on Airbnb, who happened to be the portal Open Air Homes used for that particular renter. I was left to beg Airbnb for help for months, who delayed and denied. Due to confusion over what crimes may have taken place in the house + a constant stream of homeless addicts to the house, leaving threatening notes etc, authorities told me I should stay away from my house and LA for a while for my safety. Surreal. And when I returned to my vacant, destroyed house TWO MONTHS LATER-- I caught Open Air Homes employees in my home! They claimed they were accidentally "cleaning" it, but the house had a collapsed ceiling, holes and blood stains on the walls, flooded second level, etc. At least one Open Air business partner was partying in my house during the rental, and a reality "celebrity" business partner was the top story on Palm Springs TV news a couple months later while he was running for Palm Springs city council, because of a video showing him beating a defenseless man in a Palm Springs rental home that apparently connected to the CEO. And remember there were also reality show and drag queen celebrity drug parties at my house, which was discovered thanks to evidence left behind in the house and Ring cameras. I lost hundreds of thousands of dollars from my first ever experience renting out my home while I was away on an overseas trip. Open Air Homes criminal negligence cost me hundreds of thousands of dollars, and they never helped me or gave me a penny. A year later, after I spent my own money to rebuild the house and I sold it and left LA, I received a call from a USPIS federal agent, who told me that the people who left the house at the end of the rental were quickly arrested, and they were operating a massive clandestine fentanyl lab. They also were convicted after a months long trial, which Airbnb and Open Air Homes knew all about and kept from me while I begged for help for months from the destroyed house. And then recently (two years after this happened, and a year since I sold the house and fled LA), I stumbled across a news report from major Mexican News outlet Milenio about how US government documents reveal that my house was a massive fentanyl production lab during the 5-week rental, the first confirmed major fentanyl production lab in the US, and how it was the only lab in the network that authorities couldn't get to before it was dismantled-- because Open Air Homes dismantled and cleaned it out on check out day, and then Airbnb spent months defending Open Air Homes and covering up the clandestine fentanyl lab from me, my neighborhood, and authorities. I assume the feds are closing in on whatever criminals are associated or a part of Open Air Homes, but until then I do NOT recommend allowing this company anywhere near your home. Hiring them to manage my home cost me hundreds of thousands of dollars, and a hellish experience living in the destroyed house for months defending it from addicts and begging for help from Airbnb when Open Air was clearly involved somehow. Also if you ask why I haven't sued them-- it's because multiple lawyers told me it's too dangerous to pursue legal action against them with their apparent cartel connections. Let that sink in lol. Open Air Homes turned my life into a nightmare.

There was dust and grime buildup on all of the ledges, stains, crumbs, hair, dust, along the bed frame and in the crevices of the chair. just no attention to detail at all. we did contact the owner and opted to leave and were provided a full refund, but the kind of build up that was in that room was either from a long term stay that wasn't cleaned up properly or just terrible cleaning over and over. side note: wifi signal was not good, bedding was bare minimum and no hand towels or face cloths provided. I'm not looking to trash the owners, I just don't want anyone to be in the same situation we were, having to look for another place last minute after a long day of traveling, I was almost in tears, plus I had to pay way more to stay somewhere else because there weren't a lot of options.

So rather than pay an astronomical fee for the privilege of proximity, I did a quick search of the area. There are plenty of options, but many of them just seemed suspect. The I came across the Varden. Definitely a boutique hotel, but definitely worth checking out. The rooms are typically small with barely room for a bed, a partial desk and a small bathroom area. But the room was extremely clean, the fixtures and bed were new and cool and for one person, really perfect. Particularly since other than sleeping and checking emails, what else do you really need? Well, for starters you need to feel safe. And this place does a great job of securing the facility at night, but you don't feel you're in a bad neighborhood anyway. You also might like to enjoy a welcoming attitude, and the staff and place has plenty of that. The young staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. Being forewarned that the property has 3 levels and no elevator is important, but honestly, it's not a tough climb to floor 3. And as a testament at how great the staff are, they wouldn't take no, and they carried my bags to my 3rd floor room. Since I was there for meetings, I needed to press my clothes, so a call to the front desk resulted in a brand new Iron and Board appearing at my room within minutes. And being welcomed by a reception with snacks, wine and drinks between 5:00 - 7:00 everyday, is just super nice. They also do a continental breakfast from 6:00-9:00 daily. They have a hip space right behind the registration area for these treats so it's easy to walk through on your way in/out of the property. And best of all the price per night was less than 1/2 of what those big chain hotels were charging. And I was less than 4 blocks (and a very nice walk past lots of local stores/restaurants to give me a feel for the area) from the Convention Center. For all these reasons, if you're in Long Beach solo, I would highly recommend you check out the Varden.

The employees were every friendly and their attention your detail is great. The hotel is great for being a 93 year ship. Only thing I can say that was never was the bed in the room. Mattress was horrible. They really need to replace or change out the mattress. Other than this, the stay was excellent. They did have a concert the weekend of my stay so they had to accommodate parking. But they did this very well.

We had heard concert parking was horrible and decided to make it easier. We booked the room over a month in advance and there was no warning given about on-site Queen Mary parking. A day or two before our trip, we received an email saying that there would be no on-site parking for hotel guests and we'd have to be shuttled to and fro an off-site location a little over a mile away. This was pretty irritating since the entire point of booking this and spending money on a hotel room was to make parking easier. We wrote back and expressed our discontent only to be met with a "sorry but it is what it is"...just more professionally worded. We got there to park and were able to get on a shuttle. Check in was fairly smooth although we were informed we could not control the AC and so if we needed a fan to call.As soon as we got there I called for a fan because it was 90 degrees and I knew I'd need one--the fan came quickly, but I don't like that you have zero AC control...that is a hotel room perk. The room itself was larger than you'd expect from a boat, and it didn't feel dirty, but it is is desperate need of upgrades. The walls were scuffed, the tile grout brown, toilets and sinks very outdated, etc. The bed itself was very firm, but sleepable and the pillows were fine. However, the walls, or maybe the door area was paper thin and we were woken up the next morning several times starting at 6:45AM with other guests who were so loud that it felt like they were in the bed next to us...and not in a sexy way. About 90 mins before the concert, we went to the Observation Bar for drinks and food. We were seated with the manager saying their "world class service would be with us shortly"...The service was horrendous and he and I are certainly not living in the same world if what we got is world class. She took forever and never checked on us. The drink options were limited, but when we finally got them, they were OK. I also ordered the baked brie that came out cold and the sliders were only OK. We never got to have another round of drinks because it took over an hour to get the first round of drinks and 2 food items. We finally had to get up and ask for the check so as not to be late to the concert and when they asked how everything was and we told them the truth, the manager essentially just looked at us and walked away. Super helpful! I saw many other servers scurrying around and looking helpful, so I think our waitress was just terrible...and living in her own little world...probably the same one the manager is living in. Later after we had left to the concert, my husband left the concert line to run back to the hotel and put stuff in the room that we bought and his key didn't work. So we had to wait for them to fix that which made him late getting back and we missed part of the early entry we had paid extra for. We called for a late checkout the next morning because we had the Royal Brunch booked for 11am (which is check out time) and we had all of our stuff, plus our concert stuff that we had planned on running out to the car, but couldn't do because they wouldn't let us park there. We were told they had no late checkouts left and to check it with the bell service. We went down at about 10:45 to drop off our stuff with the bell service and the line was ridiculously long and not moving whatsoever. There is no way we weren't going to miss our reservation if we waited in it, so we went to the brunch with all of our bags and asked if they could give us a table where we could lay out our posters, etc. A manager of some kind, Andy, overheard this and offered to lock up our items in a closet right there--he was truly one of the only helpful people in the Queen Mary. The brunch itself was delightful. The food and service were excellent and while I would never stay over at the Queen Mary again, I would certainly attend the brunch again if we could park onsite. Finally we went out to the front to get back on the shuttle in the blazing sun and the line was in the direct sunlight and there was no shuttle in site. I asked people who had been there how long they had been waiting and they said over 20 minutes. I'm sorry, that's unacceptable. You didn't give appropriate notice that we couldn't park onsite, the line is in the sun, and now people have to wait over 20 minutes in 90 degree heat to get back to our cars? I asked the person working the little podium where the shuttle was and he said they were coming every 15 minutes. I told him that was clearly untrue and he radioed them and one showed up about 6 minutes later. I would never stay here again. Too many things went wrong to waste the money. Stay somewhere else, and just eat at the royal brunch. Also, we were offered nothing but "free parking"...
