Hotel Royal exceeded our expectations…read more We stayed here for one night before our cruise. The service was excellent. Our room was super cute! Very comfy bed, great AC! Bathroom a little small but easy to work with. They had a fridge and coffee maker. In the lobby they have a small room in the back behind the receptionist that has tea, coffee, utensils and other things you may need on your trip! Plus it's a cute area to sit in the morning or while waiting for your Uber. They have plenty of water in the lobby. Bottled and ice water from a large glass dispenser. There are bikes available for use. It's a pretty great location - we were able to walk to really incredible restaurants, and it was super close to our cruise port!!! We highly recommend this place and would book it again on our next Long Beach stay!

The property itself is located in the heart and soul of downtown Long Beach. Our room was cute, cozy, and clean with beautiful hardwood floors. We had a comfy king sized bed and also a sitting area with a couch. Just to name a few of the amenities there was a microwave, mini refrigerator, coffee maker with Starbucks coffee. The bathroom had a shower and it also provided full sized bath and body essentials. They do not have an elevator but we managed to bring our stuff up a flight of stairs with no issues. The guy who was working in the lobby did offer to help us but we declined. Overall we had an amazing experience here and can't wait to return.

Self-parking is $25/night. Not too many spots since many are allocated for valet. Room is simple, included fridge, coffee machine for pods. Fluffy pillows. Our bathroom had a seat in the tub and handheld shower head. Never seen this before. WiFi is better than most hotels. Must sign up for IHG to get it. We saw lots of folks in the jacuzzi and pool. The jets in the jacuzzi are powerful. I got to try out the next day. Restaurant looked nice. There is also a market if you want to grab something quick. Staff are great. Drop keys in box for check-out. Not bad for one night stay.

From the moment I arrived, the entire team made me feel welcomed. The hotel is spotless, and you can tell the housekeeping staff takes incredible pride in what they do. Emma at the front desk was wonderful--kind, professional, and genuinely welcoming. The restaurant deserves 20 stars if Yelp would let me give them. Breakfast was hands-down one of the best hotel breakfasts I've ever had. A special shoutout to the gentleman who served me--I believe his name was Daniel (forgive me if I got that wrong)--who made every morning start with a smile. May health and wealth follow him wherever he goes. And then there was Genka--the sweetest little snack fairy floating through the hotel spreading joy. I wasn't even sure I deserved the surprise goodies, but she blessed me with a Sprite and some Scooby Snacks and somehow made my day brighter. Watching her happily take care of guests was enough to make anyone smile. Now let's talk about that pool area. Absolutely beautiful, especially at night. The pool is gorgeous, but the real star is the jacuzzi. Those jets don't play around--they hit like a luxury spa and practically massage every ache away. After a long day, sitting under the night sky with those powerful jets felt like a mini vacation inside my vacation. In a world where people are quick to complain, I wanted to take a moment to celebrate the people doing things right. Every single person I encountered here was kind, hardworking, and genuinely cared. Also, I would like to shout out Amanda, the tender of the bar for the beautiful service and for being so nice. To management: these people deserve a raise. They are the reason guests return. Thank you, Crowne Plaza San Pedro, for reminding me what real hospitality looks like. Between the amazing staff, the incredible breakfast, the sparkling clean property, and that heavenly spa-like jacuzzi, you've earned a lifelong fan. Room 933 James Toney and Richelle Olson. Our room was absolutely filthy. There was dust and grime buildup on all of the ledges, stains, crumbs, hair, dust, along the bed frame and in the crevices of the chair. just no attention to detail at all. we did contact the owner and opted to leave and were provided a full refund, but the kind of build up that was in that room was either from a long term stay that wasn't cleaned up properly or just terrible cleaning over and over. side note: wifi signal was not good, bedding was bare minimum and no hand towels or face cloths provided. I'm not looking to trash the owners, I just don't want anyone to be in the same situation we were, having to look for another place last minute after a long day of traveling, I was almost in tears, plus I had to pay way more to stay somewhere else because there weren't a lot of options.

So rather than pay an astronomical fee for the privilege of proximity, I did a quick search of the area. There are plenty of options, but many of them just seemed suspect. The I came across the Varden. Definitely a boutique hotel, but definitely worth checking out. The rooms are typically small with barely room for a bed, a partial desk and a small bathroom area. But the room was extremely clean, the fixtures and bed were new and cool and for one person, really perfect. Particularly since other than sleeping and checking emails, what else do you really need? Well, for starters you need to feel safe. And this place does a great job of securing the facility at night, but you don't feel you're in a bad neighborhood anyway. You also might like to enjoy a welcoming attitude, and the staff and place has plenty of that. The young staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. Being forewarned that the property has 3 levels and no elevator is important, but honestly, it's not a tough climb to floor 3. And as a testament at how great the staff are, they wouldn't take no, and they carried my bags to my 3rd floor room. Since I was there for meetings, I needed to press my clothes, so a call to the front desk resulted in a brand new Iron and Board appearing at my room within minutes. And being welcomed by a reception with snacks, wine and drinks between 5:00 - 7:00 everyday, is just super nice. They also do a continental breakfast from 6:00-9:00 daily. They have a hip space right behind the registration area for these treats so it's easy to walk through on your way in/out of the property. And best of all the price per night was less than 1/2 of what those big chain hotels were charging. And I was less than 4 blocks (and a very nice walk past lots of local stores/restaurants to give me a feel for the area) from the Convention Center. For all these reasons, if you're in Long Beach solo, I would highly recommend you check out the Varden.

The restaurants, bars and shops offer unique experiences that are quintessential to the Queen Mary and improvements continue to be made. Is everything perfect? No but that is the beauty of the unique Queen Mary Hotel. Time should be taken to take in all the available displays, self guided tour, films about her history as well as a meal at The Chelsea, or Promenade Cafe, cocktails at the Observation Bar. The daily breakfast buffet has all the breakfast offerings and an amazing view of downtown Long Beach across the water. A La Carte breakfast is also available. Now that the F&M Bank Amphitheatre in Long Beach is open, this is the perfect place to stay and then walk to the Amphitheatre for your concert. The location is "across the street" - but it feel so close that it seems like it's in the parking lot of the Queen Mary. Because the Queen Mary is a historic ship, the walls are thin, the hotel doesn't have all the traditional bells and whistles that are common in newer hotels but for me, that is part of the experience. There isn't central air or heat but you can request a fan or more blankets, if the room is too loud they do offer ear plugs. What the hotel does have is beautiful historic woodwork, Art Deco style in the staterooms, 1930s artwork, photos of the celebrities who have stayed on the Queen Mary, working portholes. It's a time capsule that you can enter. Explore their website, review the tours that are available and remember that you can do self guided exploration as well. Wander the deck and it feels like you're traveling back in history.
