Their prices on bermuda and alfalfa pellets are very competitive compared to other tack shops in town, and the location is super convenient to my barn. While some items in the store can feel a little on the higher side, I think it's worth it for the selection, convenience, and the peace of mind of knowing they've got what I need most of the time. The store itself is packed with a huge variety of items--not only for horses, livestock, and pets, but also some fun things for humans too. They also carry new and used saddles (mostly western, with some English), and if your horse ever needs something for health or injuries, chances are you'll find it here. I took my 10-month-old Bernedoodle, Penelope, to PETCO Grooming on June 14 at 7am with Bella. This…read morewasn't her first grooming--she usually goes to Prickly Pup Grooming, where she's always well-behaved and treated with care, though their full-day schedule (8am-4pm) can feel a bit long. Hoping for a shorter appointment and maybe a lower price, I gave PETCO a try. Unfortunately, I ended up paying $30 more than usual and left feeling disappointed. Around 10am--June 14, I received a call from the groomer, Bella saying Penelope was agitated, barking, and even biting/snipping. This was shocking to hear--Penelope is a sweet, friendly pup who has never barked at a stranger, or been the least bit aggressive, even with my three young boys (10, 8 and 4) who aren't always gentle with her. I figured she might have been overstimulated in a new environment, so I came to pick her up, even though she was only half groomed. I was told I still had to pay but could return the next morning (June 15) for the salon manager, Jackie to finish the job. The next day's appointment went much smoother. Penelope looked great, smelled fresh, and even got a little bag of treats. She seemed happier and back to her usual self. But when we got home, my boys pointed out that there were small blood stains on her--initially, I assumed she was starting her first heat cycle and used dog diapers, but after a few days of seeing more blood (and none on the diapers), I finally did a full inspection and found a cut on her ear. It wasn't healing on its own, and after trying spray-on animal wound glue with no luck, we ended up needing a vet visit, a few stitches, and a cone to let it heal properly. I now believe the ear injury happened during that initial appointment with Bella, which might also explain her distressed behavior that day. What's most disappointing is that no one mentioned it to me--whether they missed it or just didn't want to admit it, I'll never know. I would have appreciated transparency, even if it was just an accident. Instead, I was left to figure it out myself after spending extra on products and a vet bill. The staff at PETCO were polite and professional, but unfortunately, the overall experience left me feeling let down. I'll be returning to Prickly Pup for future grooming--longer appointments or not, I know Penelope is treated with care and consistency there.

I picked out some herbs, a sun gold tomato plant and a large Mexican oregano which I haven't found anywhere else in town. The selection is never ending and you can find many native plants that are difficult to find, elsewhere, and impossible to find at the large chain nurseries. I've ended up taking so many plants back to larger places (that I won't name, but we all know) because, even when buying them at whatever price, at the time, I already know that they won't last the year that they are guaranteed for. It always seems like such a waste. Built from the ground up, it's nice to go somewhere that you know isn't just a gear in the big box monster machine. Gardening was one of the things that got me through a cancer journey, and yesterday, as I put my hands in sand and soil, I watched a hummingbird light on one of my favorite flowering bushes, that Jared, the owner, helped me pick out, near the beginning. It was little when I chose it, but now is almost five feet high. I don't remember it's name, but if I were to show anyone who works at Spadefoot, they would know what plant it is, where it can thrive, what care it will require, and when it will bloom. With some thought and planning, one can literally have a rotating buffet of blossoming food for all the critters, without adding any dyes, sugars, or plastic feeders. Nature does it all. I think of this nursery, every single morning, when I see this particular bush, which feeds the bees, hummers... Offers shade and shelter to those without wings, and other wonders, and remember how all things are connected. If you want a peaceful, lovely way to spend some time, skip the bustle and take a stroll, through this unpretentious garden space, and take a bit of that home, with you. Also, the name made me curious. So, look it up. It's hecka cool.
