Stopped by for lunch while on a business trip today. I thought that the sushi was decent but a little strange. I had the spicy crab roll which VERY tasty, but it wasn't spicy and it had strange crunch bits in it. The yellowfin roll was spot on. It was a little hard to find in the maze of a shopping-stripmall that never seemed to end. The staff was friendly but not very attentive. I did feel that the selection of sushi for lunch was very limited, but still a solid choice. Better than a chain which was our second choice. read more

This place has a nice variety of Japanese cuisine and the flavors of everything I tasted from the regular menu, was delightful. The hibachi was also flavorful, we had fun with the Chef and the portions are large, so be aware! The only reason I give 4 out of 5, is the fact that the decor and the way it looks when you first come in, needs a bit of modification, to go a pair with the quality of the food and the service that the staff provides. read more

With much sushi experience, I was very surprised by this little place in Holland. I came out to visit some family and they took my sister and I here for our sushi cravings. Though it is in the middle of this small mid-western town, their rolls were very original and the fish was fresh! Who knows how far it had to travel to be served on the plate in front of us. We love coming here, a gem in the midst of a little strip mall. The food is great, I've always done hibachi when coming here, so I can't speak for anything else like the sushi, but if it's anything like the hibachi I'm sure it's great. The chefs are always entertaining and have a great time cooking and joking around with the table members. We love the show they put on. I really enjoy the chicken and filet, my family loves the scallops and shrimp. The drinks are strong and the food is good. I would not come back to this place, I'd go get Mc Donald's over this place. At first I thought the food was great and so was the service, however, the place was extremely dirty. It was dusty everywhere and the hibachi grills had crusty food all around them. Also, I'm no health inspector but I thought raw and cooked product were supposed to be separated and the hibachi chefs didn't do that. This was supposed to be a fun last youth group night for our seniors but pretty much our whole group of 12 ALL got sick here! It's a different kind of memorable that's for sure! Other people have gotten sick here too other than our group of seniors! Sorry Wild Chef but I can find better food and health standards for Japanese cuisine at my grocery store! Not bad for Holland. A great takeout option. In holland visiting family, I thought I'd be adventurous and try the sushi place. I've eaten a lot of sushi, from several Nobu restaurants, two trips to japan, and all over South Florida. My "test" is always the tuna sashimi. I came in on a Monday evening to order. There is nothing impressive about the restaurant. It looks like it was built out by the owner, not by a restaurant builder. Choppy spaces, amateur finishes. I wouldn't enjoy eating in, except maybe at the hibachi with a group. Three tables were occupied about 7:30. I ordered a tuna Tataki, which was very good but different from any I've seen before. I was expecting slightly seared and extremely thin tuna. What came was actually better. Thick slices of raw tuna dusted with something quite spicy (reminded me of a Thai preparation), on a bed of cucumber slices. Very good, but spicy for most local palates. I asked for kani Su off the menu; a riceless roll of krab and roe wrapped in cucumber, in a vinegar sauce. Although they do a riceless roll wrapped in cucumber, they could not accommodate my request. I ordered seaweed salad, and was asked if I wanted deluxe. Of course I do. It came with some added fish and was super crunchy and dressed nicely. I could eat that all day. I ordered the sashimi appetizer to test the raw fish. When I got home, I realized they gave me the sushi appetizer by mistake. The tuna, salmon, shrimp and another fish were all very fresh. The sushi rice was nicely seasoned. The fish, however, all felt warm. I'm used to warm sushi rice with a cold fish on top. I had hot edamame in the bag, but my drive home was only 5 minutes. I suspect they may leave the fish out of the refrigerator as they use it. Edamame was nice and plump, but totally unsalted. Over all, I think its a nice, healthy option for takeout in Holland. I have eaten at the Wild Chef many times over the years. It has expanded its size and offers some nice specials for the patrons. I do think the quality has declined. The sushi is often excellent but one roll I like, "Holland Roll", includes a couple pieces of tempura shrimp. They have stopped making the shrimp fresh for the roll, and must make it just once or twice a day. So when it arrives to the table, the tempura coating is cold and hard. SO much better fresh. I hope they are at least making fresh for the people ordering only the tempura as a meal. If you stick to california rolls and other sushi you will probably be pleased. I would say they are very quick with service, so probably a good place pop in if you are in a hurry. They will grab away a dish you are not finished with, so be on alert if you want to keep it and finish the food. read more

I love sushi. I'm not in love with their sushi. If I'm craving it and I don't want to spend the money I'll head here. They've got good deals and discounts. But if you're going for quality go to Mizu or just drive to Grand Rapids for AYCE. Like someone else had mentioned there's not much competition for sushi/asian cuisines in the area. However, I don't want to discredit Wild Chef in its entirety. The staff/customer is great. I've never had a bad experience. Even when it gets busy and I almost feel like I've been forgotten they come running in with other requests (usually asking for ponzu/spicy mayo sauce/more napkins). I've some of the other dishes like the chicken katsu and teriyaki. The presentation of the platter is something I would totally Instagram, but (again) not a big fan. Every time I come here I always end up getting something different though... Also everytime I'm here I hear a ton of requests for white sauce...decided to try some for myself...it's literally just Japanese mayo. For those of you who like spicy mayo on your sushi, it's exactly that, but without the spice. read more

The food here is impeccable, I really recommend trying the hibachi. The fried rice with the yum-yum sauce is scrumptious. Despite the food being delicious, the atmosphere could use a little help. For me personally, the hibachi experience is a little awkward while the chefs joke around with you, but for others, it could be a fun experience. Just right. If you've been to hibachi in the area before, it is exactly what you expect, but done well. Not as dark and salty as Ichiban, not are pretentious as Kobe. No wait to get seated, even though the lot looked full. Bonus at the end of the meal is shot of sake out of a squeeze bottle, makes sure everyone leaves with a smile and a bit of a buzz. I've never had Japanese before and I'm anxious to go back! The food was great and it was fun sitting there watching your food get made on the habachi (I didn't get sushi). Maybe some day I'll try my first sushi there. The only negative is that it isn't the most baby friendly place. It can take a while for the food to be prepared and if you aren't prepared to sit around the hibachi it can be difficult entertaining in that style of seating arrangement. read more

I use to live in chicago for many years and know my japanese in and out and i have to say this place is amazing. Their tempura is on top and the service is great. I love the atmosphere, it made me feel like i was back in the city again. My only complaint was that the seaweed on the sushi was a little chew the first time but that was a minor minor set back. I'm planning a mini-reunion with college buds in Holland and wanted to make sure all my favorite places were still open, when I realized that I haven't reviewed Wild Chef - and it's been 5 years since graduation. Whoa. We used to go here a few times a year during college and when we'd visit over the summers too. The hibachi is delicious. Everything is fresh and yummy, and the fish & ginger sauces are great. The lunch specials are fantastic, especially for broke college kids. I've also had their sushi, and it's really good. I really can't wait to go back next time I'm in Holland. read more

Everything was good with a beautiful presentation of the sushi. We got CA and wild chef rolls, veggie tempura appetizer, fried rice, and tea. The favorite dish was definitely the fried rice made only so much more delicious with the use of their white sauce. The seating area was clean, well lit, and simply decorated with unique light shades over the bar. For Holland this is possibly only choice for Japanese cuisine but it is noteworthy nonetheless. The one thing I would suggest is to make the tempura vegetables smaller for easier eating/ dipping. read more

The lunch specials are a great, fairly priced option and I almost always struggle to finish the plate and hibachi dinners are always fun! The servers are often quiet but very helpful. The hibachi chefs on the otherhand are always very friendly and eager to show you the tricks they have up their sleeve. The location isn't anything special, but the food it more than worth it. Tyler Cowen, an economist and foodie, posits that the best Asian food can be found in small strip malls like this because they have to rely on the quality of their food to attract customers (rather than foot traffic) and it definitely holds true here. I always order the Yakiniku, thinly cut steak with Japanese spices. Whatever you order make sure to use the white sauce on rice and brown sauce on beef. I often buy some extra to take home. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Holland and I would highly recommend it to anyone who's looking for a good meal. read more

First time visitors so I'll admit we had never had the hibachi, etc. We both ordered sushi. I got the combination spicy plate (spicy tuna, salmon and California) and my girlfriend got the New York roll. They came out quick, miso soup and salad came with mine and they were decent. Her New York roll was not bad. Mine had no flavor at all even with the soy sauce. I also realized my order was wrong-I ordered the spicy plate but they were the plain versions of these rolls. I told the waitress who was apologetic and brought out some spicy mayo. Then we got the bill and she didn't charge for mine which was $14. I might go back here, the hibachi looked pretty good.
