I got 2 orders of the Peking duck, 2 of the General Tso's chicken, and 2 of the pork and eggplant with garlic sauce. The duck was a bit sketch because I saw some yellow parts like egg or something and it was unlike any duck I have ever seen. The skin was super wrinkly and the half order looked like a quarter. I don't even know why they had this on their menu, it was quite sad. The redemption was the chicken and the pork was decent. My first time here. Ordered takeout. It was a pretty constant stream of take-out customers during the lunch hour. My order was ready in a little less than 30 minutes. One drawback: for some reason I didn't get an update that the restaurant had confirmed my order. Or when it was ready...they have a bunch of chairs in the lobby so you can wait...and watch the sushi being made. So it wasn't really an issue for me. The restaurant had a nice dinning room (and bar!!!) which I am going to enjoy the next time I am in Holland. I ordered the Volcano Roll. Great Food! My family loves coming here and there is always seating. They have plenty of room and spots for large parties. Their hot and soup is delicious. We were looking for some authentic food. We got a pick up, and then food was sub par. Egg rolls were greasy and overdone, the Crab Rangoon and dumplings we not completely cooked through. The Mu Shu Pork didn't have much flavor, neither did the Cashew Chicken or the Combination Fried rice. We felt like we wasted over $60.00 bucks and had to through it away. Very disappointing. The food is good here. We have eaten here before. This time we wanted to do the family dinner for two. After carefully checking the menu I couldn't find a single mention regarding substitutions so I requested Pad Thai Beef instead of chicken, a difference in price of .45. I was told no despite there being no mention. I pointed this out as well as the price difference but to no avail. I understand many places have this policy but it is always disclosed on the menu. The only conclusion I could reach is the perhaps the food isn't prepared as fresh as one would think with all menu items. I hope this isn't true. Based on this and the manager's attitude I took two stars off for customer service. Let's see how the rest of the meal goes. Well the food was good but the presentation wasn't anywhere near previous visits. The sushi rolls fell apart and were a little sloppy. I hope they return to their previous standards. read more

My friend and I tried the newest Chinese restaurant in Holland during their soft opening. Shanghai is fairly large, and while primary an American style Chinese restaurant, they also have a sushi bar. We came during lunch and ordered two entries to share. The lunch menu includes a main dish, rice (fried or steamed), and a choice of soup, salad or crab rangoons. My friend also wanted to try the sushi and somehow ordered five rolls for two of us (our server was able to box it for us to take a majority with us). The sushi came with miso soup and green salads. I did not care for the ginger dressing on the salad, it reminded me of a cross between ginger dressing and a cheap Italian one. The salad itself was lettuce. The miso soup was equally disappointing. My friend described it as watered down. It was not the warm, rich miso that I wanted. After this bad start the rest of the meal improved. The lunch portions were a reasonable size, there was more than enough food but a portion that was not overwhelming. A person with a large appetite could finish it. We shared Mongolian beef and general chicken, each with pork fried rice. The rice was fine, a bit dry. The beef and chicken were both better-than-average-good. The beef was not chewy or overwhelmed by sauce. The breading on the chicken was a good ratio and did not fall into the common fail of being overly breaded and fried. The sushi was average good. The sushi menu is fair, all of the basics are there as well as a list of more creative rolls. We had the pink lady roll (wrapped in salmon and pink seaweed) and a few basics including the California roll. I appreciated that the salmon we had was a good quality, easy to bite into. The service was very good and all of the items we ordered arrived at the table within a reasonable time period. Overall there is room for improvement, though that is what a soft opening is for. The waiter hasn't return to check on us or tell us why it's taking too long. We decide to to leave without eating or paying, due to these facts. read more

They have delicious food. I really enjoyed the sauce and shrimp in the Walnut Shrimp, BUT either the walnuts are rancid, or they are frying them in old oil; the walnuts are disgusting. I've tried it 3 times to allow redemption on the walnuts, but no luck. The coconut sauce is thick and sweet, which I love. The shrimp is HUGE and usually cooked perfectly. Unfortunately, I got a bad shrimp the last time I ordered it (tasted of ammonia and spit it right out...) and ate no more of it. So, with that being said, I'm giving up in the Walnut shrimp for a while. Their Mongolian Beef is SUPERB! The beef is so tender and the sauce is delicious with all it's green onions laced throughout. Could be a little more spicy though, imo. Would really like if they had a Mei Fun dish, rather than the Singapore rice noodles. The curry used isn't good; or is just overpowering. I prefer rice noodles over Lo Mein noodles. So that would be awesome. I would have given less stars due to the bad walnuts and the one bad shrimp, but everything else I had was good. Went with my family to try Shanghai Grill after my in-laws told us it was very good. We went on a Friday evening which is a sketchy time to go to a restaurant in Holland since nobody tends to cook on the weekends and restaurants are usually packed. We were seated immediately. We were surprised by how well the interior of the restaurant looked. It was well lit and very clean. The decor was more high end then what we were expecting. You could tell they spent some time and energy to make the place look really nice and they succeeded. We started out by ordering some Sushi. My wife and I had the Spicy Tuna Rolls and my daughter had the California Rolls. When they came out we couldn't believe how large of portions they were. Both the the rolls were very tasty and we all agreed it was some of the best sushi have have eaten. For our entrees we ordered Cashew Chicken, Mongolian Beef, Sweet and Sour Chicken, and the Crispy Honey Shrimp. What is nice is that you also get a choice of white, brown, or fried rice with your entree. We also got an order of Egg Rolls to split with everyone...just to try them out. The portion sizes were what you would expect with a Chinese dinner. All the food was hot when it came to the table and very tasty. The Mongolian Beef was more spicy than sweet like you get from other restaurants around town. It took a little bit to get use to but it was delicious. Everyone was happy with what they ordered and we ended up taking some of all the food home (except for my Cashew Chicken which I happily ate it all). We also observed several other plates of food that went by for other tables and you couldn't help but notice the exceptional presentation of their food. We still don't know what that boat of food that went by was or that big plate of sushi with some kind of volcano on the plate but it was very cool to see. As far as the service went, we didn't have any issues with our waitress. She was attentive yet non-obtrusive like you would want your waitperson to be. Lastly, the cost seemed to be in-line as other sit down Chinese Restaurants in town. The price on the sushi was pretty cheap especially for the quality (and quantity) that you got. I have gone here twice now. The sushi is Horrible. And not fresh. Scallop pieces were old and discolored. Pieces are not cut well and has no presentation. Quality of sushi is a step down from grocery store sushi. Miao soup was overloaded with seaweed for the quality of sushi they are over priced. Based on one visit, I thought this place was great. Decor is warm and tasteful. I sat in the bar, which was cozier than the big main dining room. Had egg drop soup (fresh, well-made) and the "house special double pan fried noodle," which came with lots of fresh, tender, flavorful beef, chicken, shrimp and broccoli in a tasty brown sauce (see pic). Bartender whipped up a decent "mai tai" (not truly a mai tai, but whatever, it's Michigan) made to order, not pre-mixed. Holland has needed a better, spiffier, somewhat more contemporary option for Chinese. Hope this place does well. read more
