Tommy and I drove up to Pacific Grove to check out some antique shops, and ended up finding Wild Fish restaurant right after they closed for lunch at 2 PM. I checked out their menu and saw they offered a vegan entree that sounded really nice. They didn't open back up for dinner until 5PM. We went to the Monterey Aquarium and drove back to Pacific Grove about 4 PM. I shopped a few more stores and finally at 5 PM went and opened the door to an amazing restaurant experience, The owners, Liz and Kelvin Jacobs, were as awesome as the food. Loved hearing about their move from near Ft. Bragg, CA where they had a restaurant, to Pacific Grove after visiting the Monterey Jazz Festival. Liz is from New Orleans, and Kelvin is from England. The restaurant is cute, and we loved the chandelier near the front door that reminded us of Chihuly. They commissioned a new art glass artist to make it. Beautiful My vegan dish was inspired, and Tommy's rock cod was as good, according to him. It's a cute little restaurant tucked on a busy Monterey street, but was quite empty on a Thursday afternoon. The service was excellent. We made reservations for 12:30 and arrived at noon, but they seated us right away. For entrees I got the shrimp boil, which was excellent. The broth was especially good. We have been coming to Wild Fish every few months for the past 3 years. Their fish and chips WERE the best. We felt like a splurge today and we were horribly disappointed. It was disclosed that the chef left. The cevice was old fish and the fish and chips were soggy. They used to be amazingly crispy. Just disappointed. Our server was nice. Feeling sad. We're local and used to recommend this place all the time but unless they go back to the old fish and chips we won't be back. read more

The food was horrible. First, everything was over salted to the point of almost being inedible. My plate, the Petrale sole, was literally rubbery. The puree of whatever was cloyingly sweet. The beans mediocre, cold and overly salted. Lemonade is on the menu, there was none. They're trying to be something they are not, with a supposedly "elegant" small portion presentation for exorbitant money. Go to The Fish Market in Monterey or Passion Fish in Pacific Grove and have a WAY better meal for same or less money. The appetizers, like the baked potatoes were unceremoniously dumped in a bowl ... the Focaccia was terrible ... stale. You get two popovers ... they were cold and almost stale, not moist and tasty. The baked whole carrots were small, cold, over salted and hard - tiny portions for big money. The garden salad was drenched in too much salty "buttermilk" dressing that tasted like Tahini with a clump of stale parmesan dumped on it. The bouillabaisse was less than meager with practically no seafood in it and, again way too salty. The Ahi Tuna -- yuch ... my partner didn't even finish it ... One good thing ... the fried calamari rings were just ok, yet, still oversalted ... the sauces bland and uninteresting ... we put ketchup on everything. Don't trust the menu either ... the Strawberry Rhubarb desert really has peaches in it -- the menu says apple (?) The waiter has no idea. The service is good though. No excuses. Business dinner. Excellent outdoor parking. Wonderfully attentive service. Prompt to fill water glass, asked if we need extra drinks and plates which requires paying attention. This was greatly appreciated so we can enjoy our meal and discussion without interruption by looking for help. The meal itself was wonderfully prepared (ahi tuna), presented and was delicious. Oysters were fresh and very enjoyable - great balance of sea and natural oyster flavor. Good variety in dessert options - bread pudding, chocolate cake, cheesecake and sorbet. I ordered fish and chips. You get 2 good size pieces of fish along with a small amount of soggy chips. The fish was really fresh and tasted great. The batter was extra crispy but there was a spice in it that didn't taste quite right. It tasted a little like cumin. I'm not a fan of cumin and it seemed odd to have it on English fish and chips. I felt the price of $27 is a little too high. I had the Sticky Toffee Pudding for dessert. It was fantastic but too pricey- $20. Service was good. One of the worst meals I've ever been served. The halibut was tough and unseasoned, the corn coulis could have been interesting but was just not well executed. There was an inch thick slice of undercooked onion taking up space on the plate, very confusing as to what it was supposed to contribute. The popovers were dense and cold in the middle. The grits were cold, and the collard greens were ok but a little bland. The swordfish was moist, but there was very little of the blackening seasoning on it. We now know all the good press this restaurant receives. We went in for lunch. It seems pricey however we have spent more and gotten a lot less in other restaurants. Kudos to Arturo our waiter!! He was perfect! My husband and I shared delicious brussel sprouts - a huge portion. Then we shared the bouillabaisse. Very fresh and the sauce was to die for. If I were of the moneyed class in the Central Coast, I'd have a weekly standing table at Wild Fish. It feels like the classic & comfy neighborhood joint you're a regular at, but with very high-level food. We came here a little later (8pm) on a Thursday night pre-Labor Day weekend and had the entire front patio to ourselves. The service was warm and attentive, and the mussels steamers was hands down one of the greatest shellfish dishes of my life. The briny freshness of the mussels and the burst of citrus in the broth was crazy addictive. I'd make the drive back up to Pacific Grove just for this dish alone. Wish we had enough room for the sticky toffee pudding, but alas it's a great reason to return. This is the restaurant you're hoping for when planning that romantic Monterey weekend getway. read more

The good: The "Marine Tonic," their take on a gin and tonic garnished with kelp -- seemed like it could be weird, but I enjoyed it. The half dozen oysters were good and nicely dressed with a pomegranate mignonette. The bad: We ordered two appetizers: harissa carrots, which were seriously undercooked, and fried fingerling potatoes, which were more or less unseasoned -- basically (no salt or anything else) on them at all. My entree was the bouillabaisse, which was flavorless -- I didn't eat much of it. Supposedly all the seafood was fresh, but I have my suspicions about the shrimp and mussels in the bouillabaisse. Even the focaccia that came with it was disappointing. The meh: My gf got the seared tuna, which needed some acidity, but over all she thought it was fine. She liked the mushrooms that came with it. Other stuff: Ryan the waiter was nice. The guy who brought out my entree seemed perplexed that I needed a spoon for it. And there was no tiny fork for the mussels in it. There is supposedly a jazz quartet every Saturday night, but there was not one the Saturday we went, which was a minor bummer. read more

Both indoor and outdoor dining were available with an option for covered outdoor dining. Wild Fish appears to be an organic farm to table restaurant. Staff wore masks sometimes. Started off with the fried calamari and it was decent. The calamari was lightly fried over a bed of grilled peppers, aioli, and topped with some raw green onions. There were a few prices of calamari stuck together though. The fish and chips were mediocre at best. The batter was extremely thick despite using fresh and flaky fish. The potato wedges were delicious though. Service throughout the meal was cordial. ~$60/head after tax and gratuity for lunch. read more

Wild Fish is a delightful restaurant with a large interior space as well as a nice outdoor dining area. This review is a bit dated, but still stands true. The hubby and I spend time in central California each year and love Monterey and Pacific Grove. We drove by Wild Fish one night and knew we had to eat there while we were visiting. We sat outside where there was a cool breeze, the cafe lights were strung and the heaters were lit and going. It created such a romantic ambiance. We decided to share a bowl of the smoked fish chowder which was unctuous, creamy and had chunks of potato, leek, onions, pieces of delicate sablefish and topped with bits of chive. It's like nothing I've ever had and was delicious. For dinner, I'm a sucker for sea bass so I ordered the special which was sea bass from San Diego (SD represent!) that was nestled inside a parchment pouch with vegetables and steamed. It was served with a rich sauce on the side and a risotto that looked like regular white rice cooked in broth but was so much more. Looks can be deceiving and glad they were. My husband ordered the crispy skin salmon from Monterey which was served with a zucchini and corn succotash. The vegetables were fresh, fish perfectly cooked and seasoned. The stars is for our waitress/hostess/bartender/on the night of 1/31. We really liked this place although bummed that they sold out on a lot of items. Our server/waitress/hostess/bartender was very nice. The place is small but busy so I can tell it's a lot for 2 people to service the restaurant especially if there is a big party and a full house. I hope the next time I come back we see our waitress again and the restaurant gets more help. If you care enough about our customers, you should care more about the people who work for you. The server neglected to tell hubby that the small bowl of mushroom soup was $22 or that they had just been harvested that day. That was a shocker, all in all! Exploring PG Downtown around dinner time and lots of restaurants to choose from. We were looking for something light, like fish, and came across Wild Fish. Menu was exactly what we were in the mood for so decided to check it out. We didn't have reservations but we arrived early enough to snag a table indoors. Plenty of outdoor seats as well. Letty was our server and she was excellent. Very friendly, provided recommendations, and checked on us often. We decided on: 1) Chowder - big bowl! Plenty to share. Full of fish and could definitely taste the smokiness of the fish. Unfortunately, it kinda lacked flavor. Maybe could've used some salt? 2) Calamari - so light, crispy and flavorful. Careful, though, as that aioli has a kick to it. 3) Sablefish - very buttery. Loved the texture of the buttery fish with the crispy skin. Those roasted radishes were also a great complement to the dish. 4) Sea bass - drizzle the tamari over the fish and it's perfect. Meaty fish. 5) Sticky toffee pudding - before we could even ask for a recommendation, Letty jumped in and said that was the one to order. We've never had sticky toffee pudding and the description didn't sound very interesting but we went with her recommendation and so glad we did! Served hot w/ vanilla iced cream - flavors of caramel. Small, but we were so stuffed so it was the perfect amount for us to share to end a great meal. If I hadn't eaten so much, I'd want one just for myself. Not often does a restaurant beckon me like this. Our first night was dinner with Fried Calamari, Bouillabaisse, and Whole Cod. Everything was fantastic. The calamari was hand cut and breaded then served with a creamy aioli. The bouillabaisse was done from slow simmered stock and you could tell it was lovingly made. The whole cod was cooked to perfection and accompanied by a wonderful herb sauce. Dinner was so good, but our waiter said the fish and chips at brunch was better, so next day we come back and had the fish and chips plus a tuna melt. Seriously life changing. Batter was super light and crispy with no hint of greasiness. Fish was flavorful and succulent. The chips were ethereal. Soft and tender in the outside then fried to perfection. I'm thinking they double fry these bad boys with the crunch. Partner and I are determined to eat through the menu now. read more

I rarely share about a bad experience, but this was one of the worst dining experiences. There were floaters in the water, which the server gave attitude about replacing. The service was awful-- hostess ended up taking care of our check. The patio music (apparently every Friday and Saturday) is so loud that I couldn't hear the person at my table. The ceviche had so much vinegar. The seared ahi was decent, but the portion was so incredibly small, even for a "fancy" dish. I should've taken a picture of it.
