Visiting Asheville and after a long day we were craving some delish pho. When we arrived the place was hopping; families, couples, people coming in and out for take out, but we were quickly seated and served. We had the ginger tea which was so yummy! We started with our favorite, spring rolls... and really there was no complaints there either. My mom and I each got B2 Pho (brisket and eye round) and it came out so quickly and nice and hot with all the fixings. We got the smalls but could have easily shared one small! The portions were huge but we don't mind left overs. As we sat and slurped our scrumptious pho people continued to flood into this place. Who would have thought?? It really wasn't much to look at from the outside or in, but it's clear that this is a neighborhood place where regulars are more like family. Once we were full to the brim, it took a while to get our check but it was clear they were extremely busy and we weren't in an hurry to leave. We are so glad we tried out this place!! read more

I should have written this review a long time ago. For several simple reasons which I will lay out for you. Firstly the quality of the food at this restaurant is superb, potentially the best bowl in America. When I found out about Pho I was a traveling salesman working all over the country I ate Pho in every city I went to and I had some amazing food but none of it tasted quite as good as the broth at Wild Ginger. Secondly I will admit that the wonderful staff at this restaurant are the people that politely taught me the correct way to say Pho when I first was told about the glories that this delicacy would bring to my life. The staff is so friendly and kind it really makes you feel at home and over the several years I've been eating there they have always made me feel at better when I come for a bowl of hot soup on a sick day. Anytime I have been home in bed and feeling sick as an adult, Wild Ginger has been there. Thirdly and most simply, sweet baby Jesus the new wings they added to the menu are tasty!!! Thank you so much to everyone at Wild Ginger and I look forward to many more delicious meals, thanks for making things gluten free friendly for me, and to those of you out there wondering whether or not to give them a try. Fresh Thai/Asian food with intense flavors. Don't come in here expecting Americanized mall Asian food. It's very authentic. They also dial up the heat of requested by adding Thai chillis. We had the chicken Pho bowls and the Yakisoba noodles. Big portions as well. read more

Whether I'm ordering take out or dining in, Wild Ginger never disappoints!! I can't get enough of this place! The menu may seem tiny, but each dish is so eloquently crafted so that they don't need a large menu to make an everlasting impression. I absolutely love their vegetarian pho and vegetarian stir fry. The stir fry is cooked in a light coconut milk sauce, making it sweet and savory at the same time. All the flavors work together wonderfully! Aside from the food, the staff at Wild Ginger is extremely friendly. Also, the owner is almost always walking around, talking with guests and making sure everyone is enjoying their meals. I have talked to the owner multiple times and unlike many restaurant owners she doesn't just focus on her restaurant. She wants to know about you, how you're doing and what you've been up to lately. She's very friendly and personable. If you can't tell, I love visiting Wild Ginger! Even when I order take out I love walking in and talking to the staff. After all the 5 Star reviews, I was super excited to go to Wild Ginger. I had to talk the boyfriend into it. He warned me. I should have listened. First off, this place is in a tiny shopping center, with a Thai place, Asian market, and couple other little stores. The parking is not a great situation. The restaurant itself is tiny. You probably do not want to visit with more than a handful of people because you won't fit. At 30 degrees outside, there is no where to wait inside unless you want to stand over people eating. Next, once seated, we told our waitress we were new to Vietnamese food, so idiotically thinking she would help us out on making suggestions or tell us about some of the dishes or anything, she said, "these are soups" and pointed to the menu and walked away. Ok. Thanks. She came back 10 mins later to get our order after we looked up pictures on Yelp of what we may like, not knowing what the flavors may be like, (spicy, sweet, etc). I ordered Pho with 3 types of steak, the BF ordered a Stir Fry dish, that was vegetarian but added chicken. Once we got it in front of us, his had 4 tiny pieces of chicken in it and a few more pieces of tofu and mine had 3 pieces of super thin steak, all the same type. Since I don't know how Pho is supposed to taste, I can only say mine tasted like dirty water and ramen. Maybe that's what it's supposed to taste like? The BFs stir fry was better. Not great. The worst thing about this place was the service. Even if I don't like what I am eating, I expect the service to be decent at least. Our waitress here was horrible. She did not need to be in customer service. She was not friendly, or helpful or personable at all. She left us unattended for long periods of time and was mainly answering to go orders on the phone. The whole experience was pretty bad. I left my Pho untouched after a few bites and would have preferred the $.50 Ramen noodles from the grocery store. Then at least I could have also picked up a steak to go with it too, not just 3 slices off of one tiny flank steak which is what I got in my bowl. Esh. read more

Over the last five years this place has gone from one of my favorites in town to I likely will finally be giving up on it and not returning. The pho has continually gotten more and more bland, it's very clear they are significantly skimping on ingredients and watering the broth down compared to traditional pho. The other dishes have gone the same direction and have just been so disappointing the last three years. The service really started to suffer about five years ago and then the pandemic hit and it took a nose dive. Between the food and the service we have visited less and less the last few years. The last time we went everything was so disappointing it had been about six months since we went back. We figured we'd give it another shot today. We arrived for a late lunch and it was not super busy looking. We checked in and they told us it would be just a few minutes and they would seat us. We stood outside for 45 minutes and they never sat another table. We finally went in and told the guy we would be happy to sit outside if that speed things up, he said yes that would work great and got us menus and sat us outside. And we sat there for about 20 minutes and no one came outside, we went inside and reminded them that they had sat us outside and we were waiting on a server, they apologized and said somebody would be right out. We sat for another 15 minutes and still nobody came out. We are super easy-going and we understand things slip your mind, you get busy, etc. but this was just ridiculous and it falls in line with how the service has been the last few years. We ended up just getting up and leaving today. We walked over to the Thai restaurant in the same plaza and it was fantastic and the service was actually great. I think we can finally say we're done with this place. Don't support a business that doesn't care about their loyal customers and have thrown food quality out the window. read more

I highly encourage taking everything out of the bag to see that you have everything that you ordered. I'm sorry to post this but three times missing something. The first time there was no bean sprouts. When I called back they said they were out but failed to tell us that when we ordered at picked up. I would not order Pho without them. This last time I asked if they had sprouts and they said yes. I got home and there were none in the bag. I called and they told me I could come back 20 minutes and get them. Three times the order was wrong. No apology. No offer to make it right next time. For any of the three times. Curbside service is terrible! They act like they don't want to be there. read more

Asheville Vietnamese food favors quality over quantity. In a "normal" metropolitan area, you might have 15-20 different pho joints that serve noodle soup by the gallon-sized bowl. Asheville only has one Vietnamese sit-down place to speak of (1.5 if you count the restaurant that moonlights upstairs at Broadways downtown sometimes). They serve little bowls of pho. Pho by the quart. But damn, son, it's good pho. I went there full of trepidation without having heard anything about the place, good or bad. I ordered the house special pho, natch. Made a mental note that none of the clientele, wait, or cook staff looked Vietnamese. There were plenty of Asians of various flavors (the about page on their website says the head chef is Filipina of Chinese extraction), but nobody struck me as particularly Vietnamese, and there's halo halo on the menu, so if you're one of those folks who thinks that certain food establishments must feature cooks and customers of a specific ethnicity in order to be "authentic", you're gonna be sad. I fancy myself to be more open-minded than that. I think you should be, too. I was withholding judgment, but of course I was worried. I didn't want to be disappointed by a bowl of nasty pho. (NB: I should mention that I'm a lifelong devotee of Vietnamese food, spent many months in-country, happily all-you-can-eating every food cart from the Mekong Delta to Sapa, attended cooking school in Vietnam at one point, etc, etc. I'm as much of a Vietnamese food curmudgeon as you're likely to find anywhere. I fancy myself to be an armchair expert.) I didn't have a long time to worry, though. Scarcely 90 seconds after my fella and I placed our orders (two house special pho's), we got our order on the table. Pho served Saigon style (with beansprouts). Bowls only come in one size: small. So about a quart of soup and noodles, enough to satisfy a relatively hungry person, but no leftovers. Before I love all over these people, a few minor notes on areas for improvement because there's no such thing as perfect pho: 1) The dia rau song (side plate of fresh herbs) is relatively weak. Sliced jalapenos, thai basil (one stalk), and a lion's share of beansprouts. A better herb plate would include birdseye chilis and cilanto (or culantro!), thai mint (hung cay), rice paddy herb (ngo om), etc. I solved this the next time I went by hitting up the Asian grocer next door and bringing in my own herbs. 2) The rare beef isn't rare (raw). If you like cook-your-own eye of round, ask for yours on the side and they'll cheerfully deliver it raw on a side plate. 3) The tripe is the weakest link. I can't describe what exactly I don't like about it or how I'd fix it, it just sort of reminds me of menudo tripe, which is weird in pho. I fixed this by ordering no tripe, sub tendon next time I ordered. No problem! Now what's good about the pho. 1) The broth. The broth is absolutely perfect and requires basically no doctoring, other than a few herbs scattered on top, and the one corner of the bowl I like to call my "chili ghetto" where I stick a few slices of hot pepper. No hoisin, no sriracha required. Broth is deeply umami and fragrant, neither over- nor under-salted. Basically perfection. 2) Brisket and flank. Hard to fuck up, yes, but these weren't fucked up. 3) Tendon. Easy to fuck up. So easy that I rarely order it, unless I'm doing it for science. Too many experiences where the tendon resembles shoe leather in taste or texture. Wild Ginger slices their tendon razor thin and cooks it perfect. No complaints. 4) Exactly the right ratio between noodles, broth, herbs and meat. Never too much or too little of anything. 5) Price/portion size. Totally acceptable. A cheap and delightful place to get a filling meal. 6) Service. Outstanding. 7) Speed. Lightning fast. 8) Non-pho items on the menu. Found out taking nibbles off of other people's place that Wild Ginger is not a pho-only establishment by any means. They also make a fantastic banh mi (my fella says that sticklers might not like how good the bread is, since actual banh mi bread is supposed to be sorta dry and gum-cutting and Wild Ginger's is more like a french roll). Also had a spectacular banh xieu (vietnames crispy coconut/shrimp/pork crepe) special that my mom and dad loved. Basically I think you can order anything off the menu at Wild Ginger and be perfectly happy. I trust them 100% at this point. Go get 'em!!!! read more

Stopped in on this place on our way back from our weekend getaway in Pigeon forge. Place is a bit ways from the freeway but wanted to grab dinner before it got too late. Located in a small strip mall with other Asian restaurants. Clean, modern and a bit pricey for pho. I don't know if it's just the east coast but the price of pho seems to be much higher on this side of the world. We ordered the combination pho and spring rolls or some call it summer rolls. Pho was decent and the summer rolls was ok too. Food did taste fresh and we both loved that they had satay sauce (hot chili oil but not just oil!). We like our pho spicy so it worked out perfectly. Overall it was a pleasant experience. Staff was attentive and place was busy. We will stop by again is we're ever in town. read more

My new favorite place! The Bahn Mi pork belly was seriously the best sandwich I've run across!! Tender pork, magic sauce, sprinkled with carrots, cilantro and a few jalapeños on soft crusty roll. This is my favorite go to Vietnamese. However, I have been here 3 times in the last week and half and had same moody waitress. She won't listen to our requests before cutting us off and telling us it's not possible. I tried to switch my grilled chicken to boiled chicken on my dish and she would not give us the time to finish our sentence. Even though, the reasoning is for health reasons as I just had gallbladder surgery and I have restrictions. I can't wait to be back and have a different waiter. Although, I love this place and the food is great. I will have to think twice before coming back because let's be honest the service you get is just as important. Update: been back a couple More times and the waiters have been fantastic and the food has been great. Changed stars to reflect this. Update: I'm a regular and i really think they are in over their heads. Tonight I got the worst service we have probably ever gotten. It took 40 minutes to get a table and once seated 20 min to get a menu. I'm so embarrassed I took a couple who had never had Vietnamese food before and everything that could have gone wrong did go wrong. They took everyone's order that sat after us before us and it took 40 min to simply get our appetizers after ordering. We had a baby who needed to get home to go to sleep as we were not expecting a simple Sunday night dinner endeavor to take 2.5 hours. The Wild Ginger Pho is truly "as good as it gets". The broths are delicious and the ingredients ample and fresh. We've tried the chicken, seafood, and beef Phos and enjoyed they all. I've tried all the pho places in town (I believe) and I would definitely say this is the best in town. I often just get the pho broth on its own.
