    Fishing for a nickel...
    Joey M.

"Oh yeah, I've been known to drink a beer or two. But then again, I've been known to do a lot of things." - Cosmo Kramer, Seinfeld In true speakeasy style, entrance is via a door disguised as an Aloha Maid vending machine; nestled down a dark hallway, in Hawaiian Brian's pool hall. You must face the dragon guarding magic coins that allow the door to open... da Scene: Tried out a couple spots for post-dinner drinks while back home on Oahu, Lewers Lounge, Vintage Bookstore, Veranda, Green Lady, and now Wild Orange. Cool vibes walking in 9pm on a Sat. nite, crowd was a good mix of locals and visitors. Looked like 5-6 4 tops and we took up 4 of about 10 seats at the bar. A great wall of vintage pinball machines helps set the stage; but 1st thing that hits me is the scent of the place, it smelled somehow like a speakeasy should... smoldering & sultry, yet had a distinctive welcoming island vibe. I was immediately transported to a comfortable space in my head, ready for what the nite had in store. da Libations: We just came from a great dinner @ Merrimans, so didn't do food this trip, but menu is interesting enough that I'd sample for sure next time. Drink menu is fairly deep, something for every palate; sweet, savory, fruit, bitter, wine, top shelf bottles, sake, beers... but speakeasy visit demands cocktails!! I'm a whiskey guy so go in for Miller Time and Santa's (sumptin, I forget) both executed well, pretty "boozey" - sip slow and drink lots of water! The girls all enjoyed theirs, oh they even had 4 "zero alcohol" options! Much appreciated by my wife, who loved the experience with a real, complex cocktail, sans alcohol. Usually she ends up with a juice or soda, so this was a treat. Really well thought out and I'm sure taste tested; well balanced flavor combos. da Service: All service staff were really nice. Attentive (but not intrusive), friendly (but authentic and genuine), plus FUN! Only got the name of our bartender, "Sam" if I heard right; she was on point all nite and made sitting at bar "performance art". It was plain she's seasoned behind the bar; at one point I think she had like 6 drinks going but STILL put on a show with short and long pour displays and shaking things up 2 at a time. Efficiency, meets skill, meets fun. Great to watch someone so good at their craft. Thanks Sam! We would've stayed for a 3rd round if didn't have to be in Waipio for my nephews soccer match @ 9am. Must visit spot, glad we peeked in, hope my sister starts girls nights here soon.

Wild Orange is a speakeasy bar located inside Hawaiian Brian's Social Club. It's a hidden bar and you'll have to find the entrance in order to get in. To find the door, go to the second floor of the parking garage and walk through the doors of HB Social Club. Walk half way down the hall and you'll see a dark hallway to your right. Go down the hallway until you see a "juice machine". Of course, it isn't actually a juice machine and is the door! To enter you'll need some nickels to put through the slot and the sound will let you know you have opened the door and can push through. If you don't have nickels, the bar has conveniently left some in a bowl next to the machine. They have a list of cocktails (both signature and seasonal), mocktails, and a list of shots that can be made into full-sized cocktails. The purple dragon is their most popular drink and had an ube and slight coconut flavor; it was sweet and easy to drink. The kohana tai was very strong and super spirit forward, almost too much even for me. The cafe colada was one of our favorites and not too sweet or coconut-y. The heat n up was very spicy and took us a while to finish because of the intense spice. For non-drink related items, all their food is plant-based. They allow reservations online and I recommend making them. If you do park they will validate. Our parking was $10 but with validation we only paid $2.

How have I not reviewed this place before? Well maybe because I wanted to keep it hush hush. Words been out for quite some time now and yet Wild Orange is still a favorite in terms of "speakeasy vibes" on island. Reservations strongly recommended. This place serves up impressive cocktails organized by taste, whether it be sweet, bitter, booze forward that you're into. The bites are yum! Yes, they are vegan only and no, I am not vegan myself. As long as you're not closed minded the bites serve up deliciousness! Many carnivore and omnivore friends agree! The vibe is dark, cozy and intimate. Okay for a party of 6 or less, better for small group outings or a date night. Now that you're intrigued, just need to find the entrance. Maybe grab a drink from the vending machine before? It'll only cost you a nickel!

Wild Orange is a true speakeasy experience -- so much so that finding it felt like an adventure in itself. We actually had to pull up a few TikToks just to figure out where the entrance was. Once we stepped inside, we were completely transported. The ambiance is incredible: retro, moody, and effortlessly cool, with a curated vibe that makes the whole space feel special. The drink menu has great variety, and everything we tried felt intentional and well-crafted. I ordered the Easy Squeezy, which features fresh orange juice -- and you can absolutely taste the difference. Bright, refreshing, and perfectly balanced. If you're in want a memorable, hidden-gem cocktail experience, Wild Orange is absolutely worth the hunt

My friends found this speakeasy through social media and we decided to come check it out. They offer reservations on their website and luckily we came on a Wednesday so they pretty much had full availability up until the day of although it does fill up as the day passes. One tip would be to put your entire party on one reservation so you can be seated together. We didn't know and made 4 separate reservations per group and we had to be seated separately. The hosts are also pretty strict about not getting up from your table to walk around. Eventually a table had left and they were able to move my party next to the rest of our friends so I really appreciated that. They offer cocktails, mocktails, and a good variety of food. All their drinks are tasty so any one you get would not miss. They have small cocktail shots for $10 and their regular cocktails are $17. You can also make any of the cocktail shots into a regular cocktail and just pay the $17 price. Overall it was a cool experience and would highly recommend checking it out!

Wild Orange is hands down one of the most unique and memorable bars I've ever visited in Honolulu. From the moment we dropped that nickel into the Aloha Maid vending machine and heard "Welcome to Wild Orange. Access granted," we knew we were in for something special (then found out you don't need to actualldrop a nickel... lol). The atmosphere is absolutely one-of-a-kind. The Japanese-inspired décor with the glowing orange tree centerpiece, vintage Bally pinball machine backglasses covering the walls, and ambient lighting creates an otherworldly vibe that feels both intimate and enchanting. Every detail has been thoughtfully curated to transport you somewhere completely different. Every single drink we tried was perfectly crafted with delicate, balanced flavors that showcased true mixology artistry. The branded clear ice cubes were a nice touch that showed their attention to detail. What really impressed my lady (and me!) was how smoothly the alcohol was integrated - the flavors were so well-masked and harmonious that each sip was just pure enjoyment without any harshness. These aren't just drinks; they're liquid art. The service deserves special mention too. Our bartenders were incredibly friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable without being overbearing. They made us feel welcome and took the time to explain the cocktails and make recommendations based on our preferences. Wild Orange is an absolute must-visit, if you can find the bar, that is.

Fantastic speakeasy. Definitely make a reservation online. Attached to a parking structure, bring your ticket in to get validated. I did not try the food but it looked delicious. Food menu consisted of pupus that were vegan. Drinks were fantastic! I solely drink gin and was very impressed with the cocktails. Service was fantastic & a big part of the reason we're coming back. The bartenders on Saturday night were attentive, knowledgeable, and super friendly! The ambiance is perfect for either just a girls night or a date! Thanks you guys!

So make reservations!!! They are small and popular for the fact that they are so good, the vibe is vibing and the drinks are amazing! Best part they are so reasonably priced. I loved both of my drinks, they were prefect! The grass-hapa tasted like a mint chip ice cream. But not overly sweet! I loved it. I also had the Heat-n-up that tasted like an upscale jalapeño marg We are going back for sure. Although this time we will be tasting some of the whiskey/bourbons they are the best price around to get a neat pour. ***hint when you make reservations you will get a text that will help you find the secret entrance.****

Came here for a welcome party and it was such a cool vibe! The outside of the place was very unassuming but once you figure out how to get inside, the ambiance and decorations really set the mood. I wish I took more pictures inside but there's a tree in the middle and plenty of seating. There is a bar seating, sofas, and small chairs. I loved the wall of what looked like stain glass with all the different cities. If you like drinks that are more sweet, I would opt for the purple dragon and hold the boba! The purple dragon is non alcoholic but they can make it alcoholic! I think they used sake.

Wild Orange is a speakeasy that kept underground for a year, not appearing in any media before going public about its existence, as if prohibition was recently repealed. We took a few visiting friends out as they wanted to try a speakeasy and luckily for us, both Wild Orange and my friends' idle Wednesday made for easy reservations. We were the only people for the first thirty minutes at opening, so if you like your speakeasies quiet, consider off days. All the food is vegan, so take that into mind. We got several orders of the steamed char Sui Bao and spvm (presumably the v is for vegan) musubi. They both appear to be soy based but the vegan spam was exceedingly close to the real thing. Wondering if they press, marinate, and then smoke the presumably tofu or tempeh to get that spam like flavor and texture. The bao had something similar, but in a classic Chinese style white bao. I prefer baked bao overall, but not a bad choice to soak up the booze. As for alcohol, Wild Orange offers a number of shots that can also be turned into a cocktail. We got the Honey Tai and Purple dragon as shots, along with Purple Dragon, Fuu, Sargent Pepper, Easy Squeezy, Kohana Tai, Broken Record and hold the boba in cocktail form. The Purple Dragon, Hold the Boba, and Broken Record were my favorite. Both the Purple Dragon and Hold the Boba was very creamy and smooth, where the Broken Record was flavorful without any burn. You don't need a nickel anymore to unlock the vending machine door, but it does make cool sounds if you do put a nickel in. The speakeasy is dark inside, but cutely decorated. Staff are polite, fast, and efficient. Bathroom is shared with the rest of HB Social Club. They partially validate parking in the attached lot. If you're walking to Wild Orange, enter via the 24-Hour Fitness at the ground floor and walk up the internal staircase of the building

Wild Orange speakeasy is a great experience from the secret door to access, to the delicious cocktails and food and topped off with the amazing service from Fern and Sam! Finding the location can be tricky for first timers, but here are some secret instructions: To find the door, go to the second floor of the parking garage. If you're being dropped by Uber, the stairs to access the parking garage are through the 24 Hour Fitness. Just walk in those doors and head to the check in desk, and walk past the desk into the parking garage. After you're in the parking garage, walk into Hawaiian Brian's Social Club. Walk halfway down the hall and you'll see a dark hallway to your right. Go down the hallway until you see a "Aloha Natural Fruit Drinks" machine. It isn't actually a juice machine and is actually the door. To enter you'll need a nickel to put through the slot on the upper right and the sound will let you know you have opened the door and can PUSH through. If you don't have a nickel, there should be a bowl of nickels next to the machine ready for the taking. Once inside, you're in for a treat! I first enjoyed a spin on the traditional manhattan but twisted for the holiday, with a burnt crème brûlée finish (thanks Sam!) Along with this delicious concoction I had the miso garlic caesar salad and the crunchy Asian slaw. Both were delicious but definitely get the caesar salad-definite winner! I also enjoyed the Smoked Roots cocktail, which was nice and Smokey with citrus undertones. Overall fabulous night in a cool retro vibe. Thanks for the hospitality Wild Orange!

Love the concept of the bar and how you have to put in a nickel to enter the vending machine! If you don't have a nickel, you can always ask the bartender in Hawaiian Brian's for a nickel and they'll give you one. It does get pretty crowded, so make sure to get a reservation in if you want a guaranteed seating. You'll have 2 hours for each reservation. The drinks were fantastic! It was a bit pricey, but the drinks were tasty and delicious. Definitely one of the best bars with the best drinks! Will come back for sure to try out their other drinks!

Cute, little speakeasy hidden behind a drink machine. The decor was super cool and created some great photo ops. The drinks were unique in their ingredient combinations but nothing really stood out to me or blew me out of the water. The bartenders were all inviting and helpful. Although I was stuffed from dinner, a friend ordered a few pupus, all are vegan. Both buns were just ok, the mushrooms was the more flavorful of the two options but I really enjoyed the cucumbers the most in that bun. The dumplings were OK, nothing crazy but not bad. The "ahi" poke was super flavorful and delicious and really made me think I was eating fish. My partner and I were shocked it wasn't fish but actually tomatoes. Would definitely order that again! Overall, it was a neat experience but the drinks were just ok.

In fact, around 7:30 p.m. when we stopped by, there was actually a ton of seating available in the bar. Who would've guessed. If you're in the same boat as me and are unable to find a reservation for your upcoming visit, I would encourage you to stop by and try a walk-in. The first page of the menu lists a wide variety of whiskey based cocktails. Most -- if not all, of the cocktails are pre-fixed with BLA (Bar Leather Apron), and represent a collaboration with the named distillery. If you're fan of whiskey, you'll definitely have a difficult time picking only one. I ultimately ordered their "Take Warning" -- 2021 BLA Knob Creek BLA Single Barrel, Cynar, Carpano Antica, Mezcal, Bergamot Salt. Drinks here are not cheap -- averaging $20 to $25 per drink. Although my drink was very spirit forward, it still felt very well balanced. I appreciated the hint of smokiness from the mezcal that rounded out the end of a sip. Service here quick and friendly. When we received the check, a cute small chocolate snack was brought over as well, borrowed from the menu at Maze. Overall, I can see why Bar Leather Apron has earned so many accolades in its field. Definitely worth a stop by if you enjoy the art of mixology.

The neighborhood is vibrant, gritty, and alive--a mix of Chinese, Southeast Asian, and Native Hawaiian influences layered over historic buildings, glowing neon signs, art galleries, and hidden cocktail dens. It reminded me a bit of New Orleans: worn facades with stories to tell, creative energy around every corner, and the sense that the best experiences are often tucked behind an unassuming door. Which makes it the perfect home for EP Bar. "EP" stands for Extend Play, a fitting name for a place built around music. Long before listening bars became fashionable in Los Angeles, New York, and London, there were the jazz kissa of Japan--small cafés where people gathered not to drink or dance, but to listen. Records spun through carefully tuned sound systems while patrons sat immersed in the music. The music wasn't background noise. It was the main event. Walking into EP Bar, you can feel traces of that tradition. The room is intimate and inviting. Reservations are highly recommended because the place fills up quickly on weekend nights. Once inside, the atmosphere hits a sweet spot. The music is loud enough to create a mood and provide privacy for conversation, yet never so overpowering that it dominates the room. Loud enough to muffle the secrets being shared between old friends. Loud enough to drown out the office gossip that somehow followed everyone from the coffee machine into happy hour. The soundtrack isn't just playing--it's setting the tone. As an Old Fashioned guy, my choice was easy. I ordered a Oaxaca OF, which swaps traditional whiskey for mezcal. Smoky, balanced, and memorable, it felt like the kind of drink that rewards slow sipping between tracks. Another member of our group went with the Pho Us By Us. To nobody's surprise except perhaps her own, it tasted a little salty. Considering the ingredients--Green Chile Vodka, Sake, Pho Spice, Lemon, and Soda--it was probably the most honest cocktail description I've ever seen. The drink tasted exactly like its name suggested. That's part of the fun here. The menu doesn't hide behind clever marketing. Drinks like Thai Me Down and Candy Rain practically dare you to order them. Not every note landed perfectly. Service was a little off-beat during our visit. But like any live performance, sometimes the rhythm isn't flawless. Thankfully, the vibes, decor, music, and overall experience more than carried the set. What I appreciated most was that EP Bar doesn't feel like a gimmick. It feels like a genuine continuation of a tradition that began decades ago in Japan's listening cafés, traveled across oceans, and found a home in Honolulu's Chinatown. It's a place where music matters, conversation flows, and the pace of the evening slows down just enough to appreciate both. The place slaps for what it is--and for what it isn't. In a world increasingly filled with distractions, EP Bar invites you to do something refreshingly simple: sit down, have a great drink, listen to great music, and be present. I'll definitely be back. After all, every good record deserves another spin, and I'm curious to see how the needle lands next time.

What surprised me most was how good the food was for the price. Usually spots with this kind of atmosphere rely on the drinks to carry the experience, but every dish actually delivered. The chicken karaage was crispy and packed with flavor, the beef takoyaki disappeared almost instantly, and the taro chips with mascarpone were such a unique combination. Between the cocktails, food, service, and atmosphere, everything just worked.

The owner is Steve Aoki, of Aoki Group, and son of daredevil and entrepreneur, Rocky Aoki. The staff were super nice. The brunette (Ellie?) working Sat, 4/25 was super friendly, and worked her ass off. The Azn fellow who also took care of us let us look at the bottles of special bourbon we drank: Four Roses & Blantons both tr the Aoki Collection. Regarding the ambiance its whimsical inside. I didn't look on the lanai, but I understand you can smoke cigars out there. The background music was jazz and the occasional Motown hit (Stylistics). My cuz who lives in Kaimukī has neva been to RM 38. I promised to add him to the res next time. Its a lot easier to get in vs another speakeasy in Chinatown, and its walking distance from where I always stay at the Moana.

Tucked on the second floor of a Piikoi Parkway building, it feels like stepping back in time, a true bespoke bar with vintage art, moody lighting, and comfy couches that make it perfect for couples or a night out with friends. We sat at the bar, which was a highlight, Michael and Tony were welcoming, easy to talk story with, and clearly know their craft. I went with the Barreled Old Man, a smooth, layered mix of bourbon, rye, and brandy that just worked, while my wife's Sesame Veil brought a nutty, balanced flavor that stood out. For round two, the Espressing My Love was a great take on an espresso martini, and Michael built my wife a custom drink off her favorite flavors and nailed it again. We paired it with the smoked mozzarella and salami grilled cheese and Ho Farms tomato soup, and this is where it really hit. The sandwich came out hot and crisp, and when you took a bite the cheese pulled away just right, that perfect melt, with the salami adding a savory kick. The tomato soup was fresh, bright, and made for dipping you didn't want to stop. We were welcomed with a table that had our name on it, a small touch that goes a long way. Prices are on point for the quality and experience you're getting. It's a bit of a hidden, hip spot, not for a quick drink but for when you want to sit, relax, and enjoy it. Parking is tight, but you can park at Ala Moana and walk over, and it's worth it. Next time we're coming back for Grandma's Old Fashioned and the pork belly bao buns. This isn't a bar you stumble into, it's one you come back to.

Thankfully, Michael and his team were able to accommodate us, which I really appreciated. From the moment we walked in, the place had a great vibe, the interior is beautiful. I had the expressing my love all night and even though the place was busy and there was a bit of a wait for food, it was honestly worth it. We had the crab dynamite, the ahi brioche, and the prosciutto and burrata. SO GOOD! My friends and I had such a great time and will definitely be back.

I made reservations for 5:45 PM however when I checked in at Pint and Jigger, I was notified that the reservations were for P&J and not the speakeasy which opens at 6 PM. Therefore I believe that there are still kinks to be made with their reservation system. We waited at the bar until it was sorted out. You walk through a whiskey wall and walk upstairs to the speakeasy. They used a lot of the decor from the former location known as Harry's Emporium. We were the only ones for about an hour so we were able to maximize the bartender's time. Max is an excellent bartender and informed us that they are only open on the weekends for now. He's the only bartender and they are still working out staffing issues. No food at the moment. The theme is New Orleans/French. The drinks and music all have that vibe. The room is dim but not too dark. We left around 7:30 PM when two other couples showed up. We will definitely be returning.
