The Wildflower no longer has indoor dining. Not due to COVID but due to septic issues. I wish this had been mentioned on their website. We got off our vacation route to go here and probably wouldn't have if I'd know about their issues. We waited outside on a chilly fall day over an hour for our food. The food was good but not hot or even warm. We dinned outside amongst many yellow jackets and a port a potty. I will not be back till the septic issues are resolved. read more

Love this place! We come here any time we're in the area camping at Cloudland Canyon (Ga) or Desoto State Park (Al). The place is eclectic to say the least. No two tables or chairs are the same, the floor is uneven, there is artwork and crafts for sale on every wall - and it's wonderful! Don't be in a hurry - their food is hand prepared and may take a few minutes - if you're on a 30 minute lunch this isn't your place. But if you want to kick back and enjoy some excellent food, service and atmosphere then this is your place. Anything made with their Tomato Pie is excellent. I mean, you could have just the Tomato Pie - but try the wrap with Chicken, bacon and tomato pie! We ate at this restaurant back in July. After reading reviews of this place online, we decided to eat here after a visit to a local cavern. Once we arrived we walked right in, and the host asked us if we had reservations, and we replied "no, we didn't know that you had to have reservations" and he looked at us with shock. It was our first time here, but we were seated anyway.. outside.. which we thought would be more romantic, although others were seated inside, so apparently if you come without reservations they throw you outside.. Our waitress lit a candle for us and took our orders etc as our visit progressed.. We both ordered the "special" for the day, the chicken eggplant parmesan (which I did post a picture of). And a carrot flower ring as an appetizer, which the menu had described very fancy.. just look at my picture for the actual flower of carrots.. very misleading.. anyway.. back to the eggplant.. the food looked delicious once delivered, and one of the staff even came by and told us that it was so much food that no one had finished this particular meal in months.. "Challenge accepted" I said.. and after eating a good bit of it I realized why no one could finish the eggplant parm.. It was horrible. As for desserts we ordered a peanut butter pie and a order of crepes. Now these on the other hand are the only reason this restaurant is getting a two star rating, and in my own opinion is the only reason that you should come here.. They were heavenly. My Experience in a nutshell.. Negatives: Outside = many mosquitoes and other flying insects (no netting or protection around you). Horrible, overpriced main course. Misleading descriptions on the menu. Cost Was near $80.00 before tip for 2 chicken eggplant parms (on special), a water, a diet drink and two desserts. Positives: Dessert. As much as I would like to enjoy coming here, I just don't. It's a tourist trap. The food is mediocre to poor at best. Very overpriced. Went for lunch, the first try wasn't great but I was willing to try again. That was worse. After spending the morning visiting the various waterfalls in the area, we stopped at the Wildflower Cafe for a late lunch. Luckily they serve lunch until 3 on Fridays. The lunch menu is not as extensive as their dinner menu, but it is also not as expensive. For lunch, I had the Brunch Sampler, which is a slice of quiche (I had the spinach), a "sampling" (small slice) of their famous tomato pie, fresh fruit, and a crepe (filled with cream cheese and covered with strawberry puree and whip cream). My wife ordered the Greek salad with grilled chicken. Both meals were quite tasty. The decor for this place is quite interesting. Lots to look at and art to critique. We were very lucky to get inside when we did as there were torrential rainstorms in the area. Unfortunately, this meant we could not enjoy the outside seating area or walk around and peruse the cute little shops. Guess that means we will just have to come back again. read more

Without any doubt, this is the worst place that I've dined in. We arrived 11/10/19 @ 4:15 PM for our reservation. We were seated at 4:30. The entire dining ordeal lasted until 6:30. Yes, two hours. For reference we had four in our dining party. We ordered: Smothered chicken Smothered chicken Angel haired pasta Shrimp scampi The shrimp scampi was absolutely the worst thing I've ever tasted. The shrimp were totally mushy, almost a Jello like consistency. The sauce was completely without flavor. My son ordered it, and asked me to verify how bad it was. The angel haired pasta was okay. The smothered chicken was also okay, but it was nothing special. The manager came around to ask if we were enjoying our meals. I mentioned to her that the shrimp scampi was not good. She told us it was made with frozen shrimp. She noted that my son, had barely touched the scampi. He had tasted it and said it was so bad he couldn't eat it. In his words, he told me it was disgusting. When the check came out, the manager had deducted a whopping $5 from the scampi. Please keep in mind that the scampi was a $25 menu item. Seriously, is $5 off the meal just compensation for a entree that was not fit for human consumption? Our check was $98 with the generous $5 discount. If this food had been properly prepared, it is at least two times overpriced. Only tourist stumble into this place, I bet they don't get a lot of repeat business I believe that a lot of the positive reviews for this place are from people that convince themselves that a place that charges these prices must be good. They don't want to admit that they have been taken. As PT Barnum said, there's a sucker born every minute. Even hipsters eventually wise up. This place has left a permanent indelible stain on our visit to the otherwise charming Mentone community. I don't recommend anyone wasting their money and time on this place. Wildflower Cafe is my favorite restaurant in AL. The hippie-aesthetic vibe is so calming and charming. I take everyone I know there when I get the chance and it is well worth the hour drive! The pasta is good but the grilled cheese is better! I am vegetarian so I have limited opinions but everything I have eaten there is amazing. I would definitely recommend making reservations any time you go! If you don't get the parmesan cheese dip for your bread do you even experience Wildflower?? NOPE. I never post reviews on Yelp but felt I needed to warn anyone who thinks they would like to eat here DON'T!! We stopped because it looked so cute and had great reviews. Those people HAD TO BE PAID!! We got seated quick but outside under a tent. We thought ok it's a small place. We all got ice water to drink. Our waitress Martha was very sweet but she told us she was new. We ordered rolls with garlic dipping sauce for an appetizer. After 45 minutes they came out. This should've been our first clue. Then after all the tables around us that came after us got their salads and meals our salads FINALLY ARRIVED!! An hour and a half after we placed our orders!! Then after being told by our very frazzled waitress Martha they had 6 people call out sick and that our food would be coming in ten minutes three or four times our food arrived!! On paper plates!!! The food was gross and by that point after THREE HOURS of waiting we had to eat because we were STARVING!! Martha comes out and ask us if we were done and we said yes. She then tells us our food would be discounted because of the long wait. So we were like great. She brings us the check and not only did we not get a discount they OVER CHARGE us!!! My husband was beyond pissed. Please don't waist your money here!!! The manger came out to talk to my husband and gets an attitude with him!! We eat at local small businesses because we know they need the business but after this experience I'm scared to do that because this showed me some places don't need to be opened and this is one of them!!! When we walked in we were greeted with "Hi. Did you call ahead?" Call ahead to a rinky dink hippy hub in the woods? No we didn't. So we waited on the porch for about 10 min. Was nice with big rocking chairs. The seating inside was interesting. The menu was small but varied. But STUPID expensive. Prime rib was $42. The menu said it comes with 2 gourmet sides. There were only 6 to choose from. My wife & I each picked our 2. The bill came & they charged each of us an extra $3 for one of our sides. No warning. The menu said 2 included. Already charging too much, they tacked on an additional $6. Plus the to-go cup was an additional charge. Way. Too. Expensive. That being said, the food was amazing & there was lots of it. Don't make the mistake of eating too much bread. The shrimp & grits was a work of art. All in all, excellent food, weird atmosphere, way too pricey. We came to Mentone specifically to eat at this restaurant. The outside is beautiful and there is plenty of parking. Inside it's a little cramped, but very homey and rustic. You wouldn't feel out of place in a t-shirt and shorts or in formal attire - come as you are! Our server was very warm and friendly, but it was a busy night so our appetizer (shrimp & grits) didn't arrive until the entrees came. No big deal. I had the tomato pie and he had the prime rib. We were not disappointed! I think it's impossible to leave here hungry. Warm and inviting atmosphere. We were here Sunday afternoon and expected to wait. We were told the wait would be 15 minutes for our table of two and it ended up being 35. Awesome spot for lunch after hiking around Desoto State Park. We got there around 2pm on Saturday and waited about 20 minutes for a table of 4. The wait went quickly and we were easily entertained by the resident guitar player. The menu is slightly pricey for a lunch place but it is in the middle of nowhere and all the items were fresh and homemade. The tomato pie was a featured item: alone, on a salad, in a wrap, and dressed up. Our table shared the buffalo ranch wrap, the tomato pie brunch, the tomato pie wrap and also the brunch sampler. The crepe on the brunch sampler was a nice treat to balance out the heaviness of the tomato pie, crustless quiche and the other tomato pie options. The service is attentive and kind--the highlight being the gentleman playing the guitar and singing some of our favorite songs as he walked through the dining room. We had 5:15pm reservations last Saturday night. Being from out of state and not sure of directions we arrived 15 minutes early. We were greeted cheerily by the young girl at the register who acknowledged our reservation. The owner was also there and no one else spoke to us until 5:13 when I heard them say close enough and we were seated at our table that was empty when we arrived. If it is their policy to not seat you early this should have been shared with us when we arrived. Our server was Taylor who was friendly and sweet. The food was a disappointment. We ordered the Yeast rolls and Parmesan dipping sauce as an appetizer. The rolls were unremarkable frozen rolls and the dipping sauce gummy and flavorless with some shaved Parmesan on top. I ordered the Loaded Tomato Pie. The same gummy (think wallpaper paste) as on top of the angel hair pasta with a tomato pie plopped on top. The pie was cold on the bottom and room temperature on top. Added to the pasta was dried out bits of chicken. It had the appearance of food that was cooked hours before and then kept on a "warmer" to compose the dish later. All in all a disappointment served on a paper plate for $103 with tip-1 appetizer, 2 entrees and 2 deserts to go. read more

How great is this place? Wish I was in Mentone more often! I'm in love with all things Mentone. I love the people, the fun shops, the beautiful surroundings, just about everything. Okay, well, maybe everything. And this restaurant sums up everything about Mentone that makes it so great--the food was yummy, the service outstanding, and the atmosphere is unique and relaxing. I had the Wildflower brunch/lunch sampler... it came with steak, tomato pie, ham & cheese quiche, fresh fruit, smashed potatoes, roasted veggies and a strawberry crepe. Quite a mixture. But quite delicious. My boyfriend had the shaved prime rib and loved every bit of it. And please, oh please, get the Derby Pie....fantastic. It was obvious that everything was homemade and that the chef actually cared about what he was doing. We completed our meal with two cups of coffee to-go (to enjoy as we walked around downtown Mentone), which was their own organic roast, and incredibly good. The service was fantastic as well... all of the employees were so personal and genuinely interested in how you were doing. They seemed to enjoy their job and happy to be at work. This was a charming and delicious stop between Atlanta and Huntsville. In our ever continuing quest for great food we try to avoid chains, and a weekend eating in Atlanta left us wanting something better and lighter than Hardees or Burger King. We had every intention of having salad, but the menu had so many more delicious options. We ordered the small spinach quiche for an appetizer because the restaurant has a warm glow about it that leads you to believe that they are fully capable of making delicious food and, as I said, we were pretty full. When it came to the final bite we each got as much as we could and lamented not ordering the large portion. We were almost positive we had ordered wrong by not getting the quiche meal, but based on the appetizer we were fully confident in the chef's abilities and stuck with the daily special. For those who don't know about Conecuh sausage, by all means, please research it. And by research, of course I mean "try". It's perhaps the best sausage of all time, and they had a slider of Conecuh sausage with stir fried onions and green peppers. I was so glad when my wife asked what type of sausage it was and she said "something that starts with K or C" and then identified it when I said Conecuh. It was further confirmation that this was a great place for food. We actually ordered one sausage and one shrimp slider meal. The shrimp were okay. I like shrimp, but I tend to prefer them closer to their point of origin both for freshness and for skill of preparation. Compared to processed parts of pig with a tasty blend of spices, the bottom feeding crustacean had a pretty tough fight for best slider to begin with, but it did definitely put up a good fight. The pickles that came with it were actually pretty good. I don't normally eat pickles. In fact, I can't recall a single time I've purposefully bitten into one, but this was pretty good for the bite I had. My wife assured me it balanced out the sliders quite well as she ate some of mine. The chips that came with the meal were good, but nothing about which to rave. I'm not sure if they were store-bought or made in-house, but either way not the talk of the meal. We wanted to try the crepes, really, we did. Sadly, a weekend of good eating prevented us from trying them, but the one I saw on a neighbor's plate looked amazing. We're re-routing an upcoming trip to north Georgia to go through Mentone with my grandmother-in-law soon so she can experience the food. I'm not sure how a non-English-speaking Korean grandmother will find the experience, but needless to say I may have an update in a month or so. The ambiance was quaint and entertaining. There was indeed lots of merchandise for sale, mostly of the artsy sort. There was also an older man playing guitar, which added a whole different dimension of charm, apart from his often unanswered insistence that we all sing along. I want to love this place, I really do. I went to summer camp on the mountain for a number of years, and this was a go-to weekend lunch spot for counselors and families picking up their kids. Everyone remembers the charming, folky atmosphere, with some local crafts and goods for sale in the front. The food itself is pretty good, especially their famous sweet potato biscuits. I went here over the weekend one last time, and was reminded of all the things I didn't like about it, however. Their kitchen is so slow. Normally I would say the service is slow, but waiters are average to attentive, but food always takes FOREVER. Lastly, there was live music this time--a man walking around the restaurant with a guitar, serenading unsuspecting tables. It's one of those things that's kind of funny, if you're in the mood for it, but everyone would live without it. read more
