I've always received great care here, but this time is exceptional. I got horrible tooth pain this weekend & finally broke down & called all the emergency numbers listed on the voicemail. I ended up getting a hold of Dr. Alfeleder (sp?). She figured out I had a tooth infection. She called a prescription in for me for antibiotics which I picked up that night. Then, later that evening, Dr. Van Dyk called me back to check up on me even though he was on vacation! And in the morning, Dr. Castro called me too! Today I went in & discovered I hadn't been to the office in 4 years! (II didn't have dental insurance, so I kept putting it off. Super smart.) Anyway, Dr. A saw me today. She removed the dead part of my tooth & put medicine & a numbing agent in it. I'm still in a bit of pain, but it s so much better already! And she just called a little while ago to see how I was doing. I feel like my teeth are in good hands The office staff was really helpful too. They printed out the estimated expenses for my next appointment for a root canal & were helpful & understanding about my situation. I'm so glad I called this office & didn't try my luck elsewhere. read more

I am writing this review SOLELY for my experience with the front office. I have been going to this office for years and have always had pleasant experiences. Before I continue I would like to say this is in no way a reflection of their patient care which is always exceptional. I was told that I was covered by my insurance for my visit. The office then sent a bill to not me, but my mother. Turns out they never removed me from her account when I switched insurance companies...2 years ago. They were quoting my coverage based on her insurance. But I am told that it is my fault that I should have known my own coverage. Well, that's why I ASKED to double check I was covered when I was there. Then when I called to speak to someone, they told me that checking insurance is just a courtesy. Since when!? I'm not even concerned about actually paying, it's the fact that they are telling people incorrect information. Horrible customer service by the front desk. I called at 10:04pm on a Friday night, not expecting anyone to answer. I actually spoke with the answering service. The doctor called me back at 10:13pm. I explained what my husband had been experiencing (for months!) and he encouraged my husband to be at the practice at 8am on Saturday morning. They took him right in and did a temporary fix on him until they could schedule him a proper appointment. Overall the dental service is great. Doctor Castro is a chatty and friendly dentist. However, their administration could be better. I switched to Blue Cross some time ago and I called and told them I didn't think I could continue going because I switched to Blue Cross. The person I spoke to told me, "You can come here. We take Blue Cross." However, she failed to mention that Blue Cross would only cover 90% of the cost for an out-of-network dentist. Also, they don't send the check to them. They send it to me and I have to take it to them. I recommend you are well-informed about your insurance plan because there seems to be turn over at their front desk and only one person seems to know about insurance coverage. read more

But when you get talked through it calmly and with humor; when you walk in and feel like you're part of a family; when you leave and realize it didn't hurt at all - those are signs of a true professional. I've been going to Dr. Van Dyk for 25 years and I have to say, he and his team to a great job. For one thing, it has been the same staff for as long as I can remember. Everyone knows you by name, is very very friendly and takes care of you. Dr. Van Dyk has a great sense of humor and always has a joke or wonderful story to "distract" you with as he works away. About the only negative that I can say about this practice is that they are not in my insurance company's "network." I cannot imagine a better group of people for a practice. They are not just experienced, they are extremely good at what they do, they obviously enjoy what they do, and they are simply wonderful people. The root canal was textbook. Some folks have spent more time or had more discomfort having a simple teeth cleaning elsewhere. It was a good thing that they informed me to take it easy on the tooth for a while because there was absolutely *zero* pain during and after the procedure. I am convinced that Doctor Van Dyk could do a great job on his worst day. Now, if only they were in that one insurance network. Unless you have that problem or live a great distance away, I can imagine no reason to not go to this practice. read more

First off Ada, was amazing over the phone. Couldn't wait to help me out. Thank God, because my front tooth broke and no other dentist wanted to take me, they were either booked or I wasn't there patient. Recently referred to Dr. Van Dyk by my cousin and husband. Making this transition is the best decision I have made. The staff is amazing and greeted me with warmth and smiles. They are a fun group. I never liked going to the dentist until I read about this place! All the reviews are true and unbiased. Excellent customer service and Dr. Castro is extremely pleasant and welcoming. As a new patient my first visit took about an hour. Dr. Castro guided me through the whole cleaning and exam process. He found two cracked fillings and fixed it a few weeks later which took about fifty minutes and it went smooth. He tells plenty of jokes to pass time by! Sad I won't be coming back for another six months :( read more

I seldom write Yelp reviews but I feel compelled to tell others about how wonderful this office is. Prior to going to Van Dyk and Castro, all four members of my family were dentist-phobes. My previous dentist made me feel guilty and ashamed about my aging teeth, and the cleanings hurt. Both Dr. Van Dyk and Dr. Castro are kind, professional and gentle, and their office staff follow their bosses' lead. Everyone is just incredibly nice and no one makes you feel bad if you haven't been the greatest flosser! Dr. Van Dyk was calm and patient with my 7-year-old, who gets very nervous at any kind of appointment. My 10-year-old got a cavity filled in record time, with no pain. Again, they've previously been so wary of dentists... and these visits went off without a hitch. Marlene at the front desk is a total pro--just great. I am a very new client but felt the need to share my experience thus far, as this office thoroughly exceeded my expectations.... I found them thru google maps and of the 5 dentist near me, van dyke had the best reviews. Called on a Monday, got an appt Tuesday (exam & x rays), received my insurance info & treatment plan, by Wednesday afternoon my teeth were clean, several cavities filled and I was smiling again! All the staff that I had contact with were nice, patient, professional, patient, and extremely patient with me. I felt comfortable, not at all embarrassed and not once did I experience any pain....which was my biggest fear. I have a few more trips back, I'll update accordingly but I have a good feeling that all 5 stars will stay put!! read more

I looked on yelp for a dentist that was near me and this one got a good review. Unfortunately I was never able to see the guy due to the receptionist, Carol, being EXTREMELY RUDE. As I was explaining my situation to her, she put me on hold for a very long time (over 4 minutes) and when she returned had me explain everything again. When I did, she put me on hold another time and when she returned tried to make an appointment for me. She asked me if that date would work and as I was answering, she began saying goodbye (very loudly into the phone) to some other people who were leaving the office. I couldn't believe how unprofessional she was! I didn't say anything but instead answered her original question that the appointment she offered was not going to work (over a month and a half away). She then angrily said, " Do you want the appointment or not!!??" My heart sank. I felt really bad and it felt like being bullied. I don't usually have these encounters with people and it was very shocking. I chose to let her know that I thought she was very unprofessional. She said, "Well I'm trying to help you. You're not our patient. Do you want this appointment or not?" Well, I would be crazy or a masochist to accept. So at that point I said no thank you. They must have plenty of business already since I got the impression they aren't trying very hard to court new patients. read more

After having a horrible experience at my previous dentist office (San Pablo Dental Care) I'm so HAPPY I found Dr. Van Dyk! At the other office, I kept getting "misdiagnosed" and after racking up thousands of dollars of dental bills and still having pain on a tooth that wasn't even a problem in the first place, I decide to come see Dr. Van Dyk. Annie the receptions called me after leaving a message, I was pretty resistant on making an appointment because of the awful and expensive experience I just had but Annie was SO knowledgeable. I told her what was going on and she gave me so many different reasons on what the problem could be. My other dentist just tapped my tooth and said I needed a root canal even though a week before he said I needed my old filling redone. Anywho Annie gave me the reassurance that this was the best place. She knew more then my old dentist. At my first visit Star and Dr. Van Dyk were great! Star put me at ease and distracted me. (I'm not a very good patient, I get very nervous) I told them about what was going on...I told them that I was told I need a root canal and but I wanted a second opinion. After examining my teeth, doing tests and taking x-rays, it turned out I DIDN'T NEED A ROOT CANAL! I was so relieved (also my wallet) but now the question was...why was my tooth hurting?! Dr. Van Dyk suggested I get my top wisdom tooth taken out because it was tapping my bottom tooth and causing the discomfort. This made me nervous...how much was this going to cost? How much was this going to hurt? And is this even going to work? Its weird getting one area of your mouth done and it not actually being the area thats the problem. I agreed, came back and I'm glad I did. It was super cheap, $225 (especially after spending $4,000 on a root canal and $400 on a filling that didn't work) the appointment was done in 20min but most importantly my tooth pain went away! I kept on waiting for it to come back but almost a month has passed and so far so good. So grateful for Dr. Van Dyk, Star and Annie. I HIGHLY recommend this place. read more

This was my first visit to the dentist in a long while, and I was so scared. When I walked in I was instantly greeted by the girls at the front desk who remembered me just by over the phone. She was so helpful and nice and so welcoming. I feel bad not to remember the assistants name but she put me at ease while getting my X-rays done. I came to this dentist after I had a terrible experience at another dentist where they told me I needed 2 crowns so I decided to get a second opinion at this dentist from reading great reviews. I was assured my teeth were in good condition and I didn't need crowns at all! Im so happy I came here this is the best dentist I have ever been too! The girls at the front Ada and Stephanie are so sweet they make you feel like you've known them forever! And Dr William Van Dyk is funny he keeps you laughing which takes away anxiety, he walks you through step by step on what's happening and he teaches you things about your teeth you would never know. Using my wife's dental records, Dr Van Dyk drilled down my molar until there was hardly any biting area left, never giving me the opportunity to speak or react during the procedure. It was a little past closing time and I could tell he was rushed, but GIVE ME A BREAK! Even Using the wrong dental records (my wife and I even have different last names), couldn't this idiot see what he was doing?? When I complained to him, he got angry at me and complained right back, telling me someone gave him the wrong records, that he had no control over who handed him what, and that it was not his fault. I am going to sue this man in a few months, because I had to get my good tooth replaced, and because others need to be warned. I am sure he was once a competent dentist. It is easy to give Dr. van Dyk and his staff 5 stars! His expertise and calming manner has always helped me feel calm and safe while in the dental chair for crowns, bonding, veneers, and cleanings. My veneers that he put on my teeth 20+ years ago are still going strong and they upgraded my smile tremendously! A few years ago Dr. van Dyk also examined and consulted on my 16 year old daughter's complicated case, helping her and us find the appropriate treatment for her. His help was invaluable. Dr. van Dyk has been our family dentist for three generations now. He is my Dad's dentist, then my dentist now my daughter ( 5 years old) sees him. Even though he has been practicing for years he is up to date on current innovations. I moved away from the area and have seen other dentists, but know that I am back in the Bay Area we are back home with Dr. van Dyk.
