I genuinely used to love this place since 2011. I went there with my coworkers recently and had a great time; however, one of the employees ripped a drink out from my hand saying there was a limit. We paid for the drink, they eventually reimbursed us after my friends said something because I was in tears and was absolutely embarrassed. It breaks my heart because I loved this place. I love that this is a building that was a fancy old school Post Office. The insides are cherrywood and and high ceilings. The inner square is where they actually brew their beers. We opted to eat at the bar. The bartender was very knowledgeable about the beers that they had on tap and in bottles. I had the chili salad dish. It was delicous. This place is a favorite of Eastern Connecticut State University. I enjoy the photo collages on the walls and the years dating them. Stopped for late lunch after several fellow craft beer lovers recommended it. Food was very good. We had burgers (build your own), shaved steak sandwich, and a buffalo chicken wrap. Found the best sides to be the potato salad and cajun fries. Great beer selection served in proper glassware. We opted for some CT IPAs we dont see in our area too often (Beer'd, Ice Cream Man, and Stubborn Beauty). Stan was our waiter and he gets 5 stars for service and personality. I used to come here often several years ago. The food was always just average but the great beer, the service and ambiance were always worth it. Well, I'm sorry to say that my experience yesterday did not compare to days gone by. What a disappointment! The food was only border line edible, and no one at our table was satisfied with their dishes. Mine was particularly awful. I ordered the taco salad with vegetarian chili which used to be my go-to meal. The chili was bland and everything tasted stale or old. By the time I got home I was quite ill and am still feeling queasy. As for service, our waitress seemed annoyed that we were there and that we hadn't decided on our orders right away. She also kept stopping at our table asking if we needed anything else, not in a helpful manner but as if she was trying to move us along. This was particularly annoying since there were maybe 10 people in the bar area at lunch time. I'll start by saying Tim M. and I arrived here around 4:30pm on a Saturday, and it was mad packed. I'm not sure I get the flow of the space, but we came in through the main door from the parking lot, and somehow we meandered to the bar area. Literally every table was packed except one in the corner. We were joining a much larger party that had been here a little bit longer, so I snagged the beer list. Definitely a long list, but why are there no prices on it? That bothers me to no end. Also, there were no descriptions of the beers on the list, so I asked the waitress for the best IPA. She recommended the Frog Brigade, which was ok, pretty average. There was some issue at the table where our nachos never showed up, so we ended up getting them to go. I love the space, and clearly this spot is popular, but there's something about the free-for-all nature of the bar area that I do not like, and overall there just seems to be a hectic buzz. The location is so cool - it's in an old bank. Loved the re-purposing of that location into a very busy brewery! There's parking outside and even on a Saturday there was plenty of parking along the street. We sat inside close to the bar so we could watch the television. Our server was nice but not very attentive. He left during our meal and the woman (Dee, I think) we had after was so nice. Very friendly and actually checked on us. The menu is huge. Drink menu was huge too. For drinks, we tried their beers (thumbs way up from my dining partner) while my mother tried the rum tiki special drink (powerful) and I tried first the root beer float drink. So delicious. Then I tried the banana bread - very strong and nice but not as tasty as the root beer. We shared the poutine dish. Best dish we had. Amazing steak on top. Not much gravy but the french fries and cheese tasted great. For mains, my mother got the beer battered fish and chips. She liked it but felt like it gave her a stomach ache after. I ordered the jumbalaya, figured it'd be New England spicy but no, it was New Orleans spicy and I had to trade after one bite with my partner. Alas, it smelled and looked great and he loved it but I couldn't take the spice. His cat fish sandwich was just okay. Not really something I'd order and I'm not a fan of fried fish. The french fries were good. The wait time was a bit much. A lot of time passed between sitting and getting drinks and until Dee came along we felt pretty ignored by our waiter. Would have liked to have it served hot. Bratwurst sandwich: Giant bun, toasted, cold brat surrounded with cold kraut. Good flavors, but cold Garlic onion rings:. Cold. Didn't even taste them So yeah. This is a repeat visit of many. The decor of the main seating area - inside a grand old post office building - is wonderful! The painted ceiling is unique. I alway sit at the long mahogany bar though and try a draft with my meal. I'm very fond of the stouts served here. I like the hearty food (except for the nachos), and when Jake is on the bar and not too busy it's a pleasure to chat with him. The other bartenders are attentive and knowledgeable and I appreciate the good service at the host desk as well. I've been going to Willibrew for over 10 years now, I started when I went to UCONN and then continued to head to this "beer mecca" from wherever I lived in the state, sometimes traveling up to an hour just to enjoy an afternoon of tasty beers, yummy nosh and trivia... HOWEVER, about 2 years ago I ended up purchasing a house in Lebanon, and lo and behold... I live about 2 miles away from Willibrew now. Pretty much the best day ever when I found that out. Anyhow, enough about me... let's get on with the establishment. This brew pub is located in the old post office and the bar area is absolutely gorgeous. They have retained as much of the post office as possible, and you can clearly see the mailboxes and the walk up windows behind the bar. The other half of the building houses sit-down table dining, however the bar area also has at least 20 tables for patrons. For what it's worth, the bar area is where it's at. I will wait for an open table just because I like it better there. In the summer there is outdoor seating right on Main Street and you can enjoy the Willimantic Spice as you dine. The food? Amazing. Really, I'm not lying. The menu is fairly large and all the dishes have cute names of local towns to keep up with the "post office" theme. They have sandwiches, burgers, salads, pizzas, full on entrees... In July every year they have Lobsters & Steamers every weekend. They have specials daily... All of the soups are amazing. The apps? Amazing. Nachos are freaking huge, do not attempt to eat them alone. They also have wings, my favorite are the Oy Vey! (I'm sure you guessed, I like spicy!) The Beer? Do you even have to ask? Ahhhhhmazing! Huge selection of both their house brewed beers and guest taps. They are known for their hoppy IPA's, however I am a Saison lover, and Dave brews some of the best Saison's I've ever had. I was in last night and enjoyed the Blanche de Willi (IPA/Saison), Saison Noir (Dark Saison) and Salacious Saison. I wished they had Saison's year round... but the IPA's are equally as good. If you find a brew you like, you can take it home in a 64 oz. growler. Tired of drinking their house brews? Pick one of the 20 or so guest beers they have on tap. There is no BMC on tap here, only the best craft beers that you can find in the state. Your choices are endless, and if you can't make up your mind you can get a 5 beer sampler with any of the taps they have. Atmosphere? A+. It definitely get's super noisy in the pub, but it's fun. They have tv's throughout the pub where you can play trivia. The people are diverse, families, couples, college kids, everyone mingles. There are so many locals that come here on a regular basis, it's definitely the "Cheers" of the North East corner. They host different events throughout the year that you can purchase tickets for -- from Oyster & Beer pairings to Beer tastings and full 4 or 5 course meals paired with beers. Depending on the event, it can sell out super quick. Oktoberfest is sold out in days every year. On your way out you can pick up Willibrew shirts, mugs, glasses or growler coozies. I think they even make dog treats now! So, overall summary? If you love beer, and you love food, you definitely need to head over to Willibrew. When deciding upon which homemade draft beer he asked me a few questions then brought me two samples, both very good. I ended up with one called "Holiday Mail". Liz had the Vegetarian Chili while I had the homemade bread and a salad. I chose the Fish & Chips. The fish was excellent, and the steak fries were hot and crispy. For her entree Liz selected the Spinach Salad which was also very good. For dessert we had Carrot Cake and Coffee. There was absolutely nothing to complain about. Willibrew as locals call it fondly is probably the best dining option in the utter food wasteland that is Willimantic. In addition to their extensive microbrewed beer selection and featured drinks, the menu has a great selection of pub food and hearty American meals. I've tried just about everything and strongly recommend the poutine fries with steak, the chicken pot pie, and the baked stuffed chicken. Their burgers are all right, and I'd avoid the pasta primavera- it's very light on vegetables and lacks flavor. Oh - I'd be remiss if I didn't mention their famous nachos, a heaping plate of cheese-smothered chips that even a party of four struggles to finish. Went tonight for dinner. My wife ordered a cocktail that was supposed to be served "on the rocks". It came without ice. Told our lovely waitress and she returned it to the bar. Just a great experience from beginning to end...every person from the hostess to the server was personable and courteous, but gave us our space... My lobster roll was beyond generous.. spilling over with chunks of tender, perfectly cooked lobster..the crab cakes were delicious with plenty of flavor and loved the panko bread crumbs! I got there at a very busy time, 630pm with a street festival going in right outside. I had a party of two and was seated within 10 min. I ordered a beer sampler and the waitress seemed very knowledgeable about her brews while giving me suggestions. Drinks came out quickly along with or two appetizers, stuffed mushrooms and fried calamari. The stuffed mushrooms where very good and very filling. Lots of good texture and flavors. There was enough for two or three people. The fried calamari was good. It didn't stand out or anything just the average calamari. The dipping sauce was better then expected tho. Main course was stuffed chicken over mashed potatoes and it was extremely good. There is a half portion our full portion option and I chose full. No way could I finish it all after the appetizers! Very creamy, the chicken was cooked perfectly and not dry. A+ work here. This was the fourth time coming here and I haven't been disappointed. Each time has been very busy and very loud.
