We are "regulars" and love the fact that we are greeted like family when we come to Willibrew. I feel compelled to post a response to a particularly "nasty" review that was put up a few days ago. There are always 2 sides to every story and oftentimes very separate realities. The post slammed a bartender who I have seen accommodate menu changes, tastes in beer, and welcome new customers with a sincere wish to help. Maybe the "horrendous day" had by that person posting colored her view but from my perspective (yes, I was there) I witnessed people being kind and accommodating to each other. We recently went to Wilimantic to visit our eldest daughter and her boyfriend. It was our pleasure to eat dinner at "Willibrew". We had the famous nacho platter and prime rib, cooked to perfection! We sampled beer and ate until our bellies were overfull. The atmosphere is busy. Service was outstanding. We were impressed that the owner had a table set for donations for a fallen state troopers family. Apparently this is common practice for him: that is to give back to his community. We hit up the brewery on the way home from a bike race, which meant we were also equipped with a 20% off coupon Willibrew gave to riders. We hadn't been before, though it was on our radar, we are always on the look out for good Connecticut beer. The building is awesome and they have a huge parking lot. We were hoping to sit outside, which is right on main street, but it was cold and rainy so we opted instead for the pub. Trey and Zac were our servers and we were so impressed with their service, that we decided to leave a Yelp review, not all that common for us. They were just friendly folks looking to help us have a great time at their brewery, can't top that. We shared a flight hoping to sample as many of their beers as we could without ruining an afternoon, and had 3 (3!) IPA's, a Pale Ale, and their lone Sour. I had a burger, K had Mac and Cheese. The food was really good, not over the top fancy, but solid. The beers were good. I'd say on the level with Thimble Islands and Two Roads, but maybe not quite as perfected as Beer'd, Relic, or Kent Falls. If by chance you wanted those other breweries, good news, they serve all types of beer in addition to their own. If we ever find ourselves in Willimantic again, we'd certainly have a drink or a bite to eat at the brewery. read more

Cool brew pub! Came here for lunch on a Wednesday. Got a flight and I enjoyed all of their beers but their Epic Boots Pale Ale stole the show. The service was perfect and I'm so glad my server recommended that pale ale. We got the Cajun chicken wings and they were perfectly fried and seasoned. We also got the stuffed chicken and it was juicy and flavorful. The fresh vegetables that came with it were excellent. I highly recommend this place! read more

I know, I know, I'm a 4 star reviewer. I can't help it. When you click 4 stars Yelp says "Yay! I'm a fan" and that's how I feel about Willimantic Brewing. First off they brew their own beer but they're not all full of themselves and offer a bounty of other beer (that they did not brew). Though I didn't order it, they had the much coveted Little Sip Of Sunshine on tap. I love IPA beer and I love strong ones at that but having lunch with my inlaws (the parents and siblings of my wife) I knew SoS wouldn't be the best choice. I opted for a WilliBrew offering of Paradigm Shift but alas they were out of it. Our affable waiter instead offered another house brew called Hopportunity Knocks (hell yes it does....bring me one of those!) and I enjoyed it so much I had 3 pints (hey, lunch with inlaws, you do what you've gotta, right?). My dear nephew informed me when I got there that Sundays are Stein-days and you can pretty much bring in any vessel, have them fill it up and pay the price for a regular pint. Hey kid, why didn't you tell your beer-loving-Aunt that BEFORE I drove there from Hartford, HUH? Next time. The menu is large (I love a large menu). I ordered two sets of sliders, Salisbury (a beef and herb burger thing) and the Putnam Pulled pork. Both were quite tasty but I preferred the pork. Two final notes: I love their pint glasses (which say 'I'm saving my carbs for beer' and have a little line about 2 inches from the bottom that indicate when you should order a refill. Note two, we were there for a birthday lunch and some folks in my family are (or claim to be, but I'm not sure I believe them) gluten free so the restaurant let them bring in homemade gluten free cupcakes and charged us just for plates. First time here after hearing about how good it is for years. We ate lunch in the pub, service was very good. Meghan was very nice, food came out hot and tasty. This place is pretty cool for being in a relatively drab area of Connecticut. It is an old post office renovated into a bar and the ambiance is incredible. They have tons of beer on tap and daily drink specials. They also have a selection of beers they brew themselves. So this should appease any beer snobs who find themselves in eastern CT. I happened to go on a "Martini Monday" when all martinis are $1 off. I ordered a drink named after a watermelon jolly rancher (I'm pretty sure) and it was very good. The menu has a diverse option of American food items, including pizza, burgers, pasta, and flatbreads. I ordered a flatbread with plain sauce and cheese and it was very good. The service was a little slow, at times, but our waitress was very nice. The only downside was that parking was hard to find. If it wasn't for my friend who happened to know about an open lot a few blocks down the street I would have been driving around downtown Willimantic looking for a meter. read more

Willibrew is a gem in northeast Connecticut, most notably for their great microbrews, unique eating environment, cozy atmosphere, and super friendly and down-to-earth staff. Not being much of a drinker -- I like to taste beer more than drink it -- my server was more than willing to work with my ignorance about alcohol to help me choose the right beers to try. Helpful hint: Get the 5-beer sampler if you can; at less than $7 for (collectively) a pint of beer, it's a great deal. The food is fairly good, but nothing to necessarily rave about, and the prices...oh boy, they are a bit steep for what you get. Nonetheless, it's the eating atmosphere and the beer that make Willibrew what it is, right? Is this the greatest bar in the entire history of bars everywhere in the Universe? I'm not sure... but it's one of the best in Connecticut, and when your Universe is as small as mine, that's worth something. First of all, the place is absolutely gorgeous. The converted Post Office has this enormous vaulted ceilings with all of this old wood... it is a sight to behold. Then, of course, there is the beer. And boy do these guys know how to brew some beer. This isn't John Harvard's or Hops or any of those other chain restaurants with their adorable little takes on Budweiser. This is hardcore beer right here. And barleywine. And if that isn't all enough, the nachos will make even an atheist like me start believing in God... ok, not really, but c'mon. It's like two pounds of nacho goodness jammed straight into your face. It's not an appetizer, it's a shortcut to a coronary. And it's worth it. Maybe I'm biased because I grew up in that neck of the woods and Willibrew, as it's affectionately known, has virtually no competition in that part of the state, but in the end, I'd put this bar up against almost any other bar in the state of CT. The only downside of this level of awesomeosity, of course, is that it can get a little packed sometimes and you sometimes have to wait. But trust me... ... it's worth it. read more

What's rich with "Romantic Willimantic" glamour, and packed with families, retirees and everything in between? WilliBrew! I haven't been here since my days at college, and forget how charming the folks here can be. On my last visit, I got the chance to mingle with some locals. Aside from great conversations of eccentric plans and strange longings, I got a short history lesson on what makes this place so awesome. Housed in a historic granite and limestone post office, the cozy pub I learned was once the customer lobby. The dining room where the 7-barreled brewery lies was once the post office work area. Once you get past the New England charm, you realize that they brew over a dozen handcrafted styles of beer each month. And in addition to their own beers, they also have over 20 different craft micro-brews on tap, most from New England! 5, 4oz glasses of your choice for less than 7$, the flight of 5 is always a good starter. With many good IPA's, porters, and stouts on hand - it's easy to get lost in all of the flavors! With over 100 items on their menu, prices can be steep but the food ain't too shabby. As a creature of habit, I'm a fan of their 'First-Class Nachos'. Strangely crunchy through-out and a ginormous portion - try it with the pulled pork, you won't regret it! The 'Air-Mail' wings are just as awesome. With humble beginnings as a deli, their sandwiches are legit. And after the strong suggestion of a date, I can attest to the fact that their build-your-own veggie burger is crazy good. They serve up interesting daily specials but their 4-6pm happy hour and Wednesday's Pints for Pilsners, pay the price of a Pilsner (12 oz.) - get a Pint (16 oz.) are probably my favorite. The dining room gets packed fast for dinner and often runs out of reservations, but the tables in the pub/bar are first-come first-serve. I'd start this review off by stating that I've been meaning to come here for some time now. I've heard only good remarks about Willibrew, and they certainly didn't disappoint. I was completely overwhelmed by the abundance of beers available here. The environment in the bar area had so much character that I was almost lost just looking around. (Not a bad thing) I was there with a group of 4 others... 4 very hungry and thirsty others! We split up some apps and tried out a handful of brews and were generally impressed with our visit. The nachos were comprised of practically an entire back of chips, cheese, hot peppers, etc and they were layered perfectly so the bottom wasn't bare or soggy. The onion rings were fairly good, but nothing special. The baked onion ale soup was the clear highlight of the visit. I've had french onion soup elsewhere, but nothing compared to this bowl of happiness. From the first bite to the last, it had a great consistancy of flavors that were certain to please even those who may not like beer. It was definitely a great idea and I would ccertainly recommend it to anybody else who may visit Willibrew. We were certainly impressed with the food, beer, and bartender who was waiting on us. Needless to say, we will definitely be returning at soem point in the (hopefully) near future! read more

It's built into an old post office... and I mean an old, Corinthian-columned, stone-and-mortar post office. How could you not LOVE that? This is one of the best brew pubs in the state of Connecticut (screw SBC), inside and out. I always loved "Stein night," where you could bring your own receptacle, and they'd fill it up for $5. Just to be a douche, I once brought the largest vase I could find in my mother's house, and brought that. That poor waitress. Food's amazing, beer selection is great, atmosphere simply cannot be replicated. The food is good, and the service has always been solid. In this area of the world, I'd still rather go to Bidwell's in Coventry, but Willi Brew remains a very, very worthy choice. read more

I seriously love this place. I will forever have warm, fuzzy memories of coming here with my very best college friends, boyfriends, dates, visiting friends, etc. This place is what makes Willimantic so damn great, honestly. I love the decor, it's a gorgeous old building, and I especially love the beer. I would never come here and drink anything other than the beer that they brew at Willybrew. I love all of their IPAs--cloudy, bitter and unfiltered, just how I like them. Their beer tastes like how beer should taste, with full on, punch-you-in-the-face flavor! I also love how their beer changes constantly, it keeps you coming back for more. I wish I lived closer now, haven't been back in over a year or so but I plan on checking it out again soon! It's SO worth the drive. Their food is good as well, I've had many different things here: beer butter (delicious) with bread and chili; their build-your-own veggie burgers are gigantic, hearty and delicious; bulk mail burrito; buffalo chicken wrap (still doesn't beat Red Rock's over in Mansfield, which is the best I've ever had and I'm a freak for buffalo chix wraps, but this will do), etc. I normally went with any IPA and their veggie burger or normal burger (hot sauce, bermuda onions, sometimes portabellas, and blue cheese or cheddar). Just a couple of minor updates, nothing that changes my overall opinion of the place (one of my favorites!); I mentioned the tv trivia game, Buzztime (ha ha, pretty funny). There is an app that allows you to use your iPhone as the controller, via wifi. Pretty cool...better than hauling out the big control panels, and it sure helps to kill time while you're polishing off a pint and posting food selfies on FB. Next, which I didn't see in the other reviews; there is a big patio out front for a little al fresco action. You'll get a good city vibe, as the pub is on a busy intersection. It's raised several feet above street level, but still, expect it to be a bit noisy. But the people-watching is good, and if you don't mind the occasional waft of diesel fumes with your fresh air, it quite nice. Other than that, my review is unchanged, as is the good, reliable food and service at the Willi Brew Pub. I noticed I've checked in 14 times...and those were only the times I remembered to check in. I come here a lot, because it's such a treat to have a gem like this so close to home. But it's still not a "five start" joint. It is, however, a great local watering hole with great beer, good food and a menu with something to please everyone. read more

Well, I went to Willi Brew since my friends are beer snobs. I couldn't tell the difference until afterwards. There is even one type of beer than has a hint of chocolate. Well, we had lunch and I had a chicken wrap. There was outside seating and also checked indoors which was converted from the old post office. This place has been one of my favorite "regular" spots all my years at UConn. The other spot being the Bidwell Tavern for wings and beers. Anyway...their food is great. They have standard pub fare, but they also have great dinners. On Fridays they have prime rib, which is fabulous. If you get in early enough to get some of their specials (they do go fast) they are usually pretty good. The beer selection is fabulous. They brew their own, and usually have 5 or 6 of them on tap. Their stouts are good. If they don't have a dark beer (they usually do) I'll opt for one of their IPAs which is almost always a safe bet. I also love to have whatever cask aged stuff they have. Sometimes it's a stout that's been sitting in there, sometimes it's a barleywine. It's always good though. They also have tons of guest beers on tap. They even have mead on tap!! Who does that?! I'm not a mead drinker, but I think it's cool. They also have a great martini and coffee drink list. They'll have something for everyone to drink. The place is an old post office. It's really big and pretty cool inside. Despite being large though Friday and Saturday night for dinner...very hard to get a table anywhere (restaurant side or bar side) between 6-9. They do have a patio outside too for nice nights. They also have events too. I haven't been to any, but they always sound like fun. For example, they'll have dinner and beer pairings - a five course meal with beers for each course, lobster bakes, steamers and suds night, etc. Definitely the best place in the area. read more

Willimantic Brewing Co., "Willibrew" to the regulars has recently been voted the best brewpub in CT, and the best beer bar in America by Nightclub and Bar magazine. They're not wrong. Dave Wollner, owner and brewmaster has turned the old post office on Main St into a beer destination. The taplist of house beers rotates regularly, with a focus on IPAs. If one of Dave's beers doesn't suit you, there are 20+ taps of guest beers to choose from which also rotate fairly frequently. As far as beer is concerned, this place is the epicenter of brew in CT. The food is a little subpar however. They have a massive menu, which makes putting out quality food difficult. i wish they would pare back the menu and focus on what they do well, which includes an incredible stuffed chicken. By no means is this bar food, the menu is full of restaurant quality plates, it's just the execution of those plates that falls a little short. Parking is a bit of an issue too, but that's par for the course on Main St, Willimantic. read more

Known affectionately by UConn students as "Willibrew," the Willimantic Brewing Co. has a nice mix of classic pub grub and upscale seafood and steak dishes. Their appetizers are just as good, especially the Canterbury Three Bean Chili, a spicy vegetarian dish with lime cilantro sour cream, green onions, and tortilla chips. It goes perfectly with one of the many beers brewed right on-site, changing each month: like "Smokey the Beer" (cherry wood-smoked beer), "Broaters" (oatmeal porter), or "Flowers Infusion" (chamomile, lavender, and honey beer). If you can't decide which beer to have (an understandable dilemma), try the Beer Sampler of five 4-oz. glasses. From the outside, the building looks like a bank or town hall. That's because the restaurant is housed in the historic granite 1909 U.S. Postal Office Building on Main Street, Willimantic. On the inside, you can choose to sit in either the pub or dining room. For a quieter atmosphere, choose the dining room; if you can find a seat in the busy pub, it's a fun environment. The restaurant is impressively furnished with deep mahogany wood furniture, memorabilia, and a large wall mural. Even better, you can see where the beer is made. Although on the pricier side, there are some deals to be found here. There's a different special every night of the week: Martini Monday, Stein Day Sunday, etc. There are food specials as well, and once I got a steak with vegetables and mashed potatoes for only a little over $10. Micro-brew pub at it's best. Pub food is an excellent choice, nacho's need to be shared with the table (it's a mountain of goodness). I'm not a huge fan of the dinner menu, the food is good enough but I'm always left thinking "I should have have a beertap beef sandwich and another beer instead". The pub is always busy (first come first serve seating) and the dining room generally needs reservations anytime on the weekends. Don't worry the staff and service is always prompt. Larger groups can request a separate room that accommodates 30ish people. Beer dinners and special events are always worthwhile. Halloween is complete with a costume contest that would rival hollywood makeup artists. read more

You can't go wrong with Willibrew. There's something for everyone on the menu and everything is done quite well. The beer list is phenomenal and the Nachos hit the spot every time. Portions are rather large so come hungry. The service is always prompt and you can tell the employees really care about the reputation of the restaurant. There can sometimes be a wait, especially on busy weekend ms for the universities, but they give you a buzzer and you can go to the bar and have a beer. And if it's nice out you can take that beer out to the well lit patio. I would always suggest Willibrew to anyone coming into town looking for good food, great beer and a nice atmosphere. read more

3.5 Stars. I know, rah rah rah- I bring the house down, but in all fairness, I did NOT drink the beer! (Do I look like I drink beer?) So this review is for the food I had: the nachos. (Could it be, my shortest Yelp review year to date? Haha). I will preface by saying that I came here with my bf, who is central CT native. This place is well known by the locals and definitely has that nice homemade ambiance. It's quite busy though. You would need to wait an hour (or make a res) to sit in the middle, "formal" dining room. We came around 7pm or so Fri night and had no wait or problems sitting on the outer parameter, the "bar" area. (Note: this was mere minutes after eating wings at Bidwell Tavern, which I forgot to say, has no wait either... not at happy hour time at least...yes we are gross). Our server was still nice and jolly; he didn't look at me crazy when I said I was down with just water. My bf got some kind of IPA on draft and said it was banging. I did have a few sips and will attest to its strong flavor- lots of bitterness, carbonation and well beery-ness....a darker beer for sure, and one that suits true beer affecionados (ain't nothing watery about it). After stuffing our faces with wings, we only had room for the appetizers, so we went with the famed nachos, accompanied by the veggie chili (total $12). Wow, this nacho plate is super big. Fried, then baked again with melted cheese, jarred jalapenos (on top or on the side- your choice), pico de gallo...the usual. Accompanied with some sour cream, salsa and chili (on the side is the way to go otherwise you would have had soggy nachos). There was nothing soggy about them, even when drenched with cheese. It was all very delicious. I think the best part was their carefully fried tortillas, as they had so much favor on their own. The jalapenos were a nice touch, but the cheese made the chips a little too soggy on some areas. The chili had a nice kick to it; very strong in the beans:everything else ratio, so beware that it's filling. We barely touched it. All in all, I have to give it a 3.5 starts because well they were just nachos. Good, but nothing stunning. I might even argue though the chips were very good, they might have been a bit TOO oily in retrospect. However, as you may know- this brewery/pub is located in an old post office, so that's pretty cool for you history buffs out there. It seems like they have otherwise pretty standard American classic fare, at some $15. An enjoyable experience with pleasant service, and pretty good nachos. read more

I'm a beer-lover and like a kid in a candy store at a brewery. But, I may have picked the wrong week to try "Willy Brew". Our visit was poorly timed around the epic power-outage in CT. The wait for a table was and hour and a quarter. We were fortunate enough to find a seat at the packed bar and not have to wait it out. Our bartender was excellent but his ability to impress me was diminished by the fact several of their advertised house brews were out... again, I blame the power-outages and the, likely intensely busy lunch and dinner shifts they were dealing with. I had a beer sampler and tried the few house brews available combined with a couple draft beers I could have had anywhere. The beers I had were good. I was a big fan of the Rye and the Stout they were offering. We had the calamari appetizer, which wasn't bad for bar food. Our dinners were both tasty. The lady had a Reuben, I believe and I had their enormous cobb salad. I will definitely have to go back and give them another shot sometime when their taps are full and, perhaps, reassess my 3-star review. read more

One of the best things about this place is every Sunday, they have "Stein Night." I have never enjoyed going somewhere as much as I enjoy going to Willibrew. I have never had a bad meal and have never had anything but great and attentive service. The beer list is incredible and the nachos are even better. This place is the restaurant to go to in the area. I make the 15 minute drive from Storrs way more often than I'd like to admit during the school year and blow what little cash I have here. The vibe is wonderful and I've never run into anyone less than friendly here. The biggest testament to the greatness of Willibrew is how diverse the clientele is. There really isn't a "crowd" here. The restaurant is filled with children, college students, 20 somethings, 30 somethings, 40 somethings, older folks and everyone in between. There really is something for everyone here. With that comes a need to be patient. They usually have a wait to be seated in the restaurant, but the bar is first come first served. Whether you want to eat a full dinner with your family, or grab a table at the bar for some beer and nachos with your buddies, Willibrew can accommodate you. I love this restaurant so much!! The food is so good I never expected it to be so good. Most of the staff is extremely friendly besides this one lady that seems a little racist and doesn't take care of us as good as she does the other customers. Other than that the place is good!! read more

Willimantic is pretty creepy but the brewery is a nice reno on the old Post Office. The one star off is the town...there is a college here but they aren't rocket scientists. Looks like 70 years of deindustrialization. read more
