It's more like a 3.5 stars but I had to round down since we can't do halves on Yelp. Good decent beer hall. Everything is ordered via app and QR codes per pandemic. Ordered the pitcher and beyond wurst. When it says add fries it means a side of fries so be careful in how many people do that since it's no extra charge and ends up being a lot of food. We do appreciate that they checked for proof of vaccination at the door (October 2021). RESERVATIONS Reservations made day-of, but it was not too busy, with plenty of open tables throughout the evening (a Tuesday). A wonderful place to go after work or a weekend to sit and chill with friends to drink draft beer and eat German bar food! You order at the front and find a seat inside - there's plenty of benches and tables, so even if you have a big group you'll all be able to find a table to sit at together. The staff is happy to answer any questions you may have about their drinks on tap. My favorite drink was the hard kombucha - the sour sweet taste is super refreshing and it's actually pretty strong too. The food plates were big and tasty. I loved the soft pretzels with mustard! There are lots of huge windows, so it's a bright happy mood. Even though there was no outdoor seating, I saw some dogs inside. They also have some trivia and events on some nights. They went through a new remodel with new staff and it's been fun coming in and seeing things evolve. It's definitely heading in the right direction! This has been a go to spot for sunny Sundays or weekday evenings for my partner and I. We love the vibe, the decor and the ciders on rotation are always delicious (get the guava cider when they have it! It's so delicious.) We went recently and didn't know the menu had changed, but since we like the spot we were open minded about the new options. Unfortunately my fave sausages (chicken habanero and chicken cherry) are no longer available! I don't eat pork or beef, so this was one of the places I liked to go to for a chicken option. Vegan dogs just don't have that same bite. The pretzel buns are ok, but I preferred the previous buns, which were a bit softer and not too much longer than the sausage. I hope this is just a transitional period in the menu while the staff figures out what direction they are taking with the new menu. The waffle fries were good, worth the $2 upgrade with your order. Sadly I'm downgrading the review. We would come here 1-2 x a week prior. They recently updated their menu and it's disappointing. There's nothing German about the food other than a schnitzel (which btw was not impressive. It was so dry and coated in (oats?!)). They now offer fish n chips and a shrimp dish (random) and they removed all of the sausages other than one pork bratwurst. They also changed their beer cheese - the flavor is ok but it's very sweet now and is not traditional beer cheese. Like the owner told me when I asked him about the new menu- "no one likes change...." Well, change is ok if it's a good change. San Francisco just lost the only place you can get some good, fast, affordable German food. read more

Every place has an off night. I just happened to hit that night. Trouble started when ordering. They were out of every item we asked for. It took awhile to put together a meal, as each time we made a request including beer was out, this was 7:15 on a Thursday night. When our hobbled together meal showed up, it included some very overcooked, mushy red cabbage and dry but over cheesy/greasy spaetze. Great simple German food. The menu is small but offers a basic sampler of German bar food. The service is fast and prices are reasonable. The atmosphere is very relaxing. Lots of board games to play while sampling their impressive variety of German beer. The menu changed, and not for the better. Wilkommen was our go-to happy place. The beer, the sausages (plated in multiple ways), the pickled veggies, the spätzle and/or pretzels. These things formed the foundation. The previous sausage platings are gone, replaced with a single choice and only 2 choices of sausage; we tried the pork sausage and it was ... fine. The spätzle is gone, the pickled veggies from the sausage plate are gone. The pretzel bites are there, but we didn't try them. New menu items we tried: 1. Fish n chips, sub slaw for kettle chips. It was mediocre. The kettle chips were stale and lacking in flavor. 2. Roasted gulf shrimp. The shrimp were *very* over cooked, and the purée thing they put it over was, well, fairly awful. This dish is unfocused and needs to be rethought. We sent it back :( 3. Waffle fries. Tasty, the sauces were good, but for $8 we got about 8 fries. That's just nuts. 4. Local radish & rye spice. This is *almost* a hit. The butter is extremely good, and the radishes are an inspired choice. However: they leave the stem on the radishes, but there is nowhere to discard them. All in all, we were *super* disappointed. So were the customers next to us. We reminisced together about how Wilkommen was a special place before this change, and they told us they had just finished similar conversations with customers who left before we arrived. It seems that *all* the regulars are extremely disappointed, just sort the reviews by date to find out for yourself. I don't know what the circumstances are behind the loss of Rosamunde sausages, but whoever is running this place needs to rethink their changes. This feels like someone tinkering with a good thing, and it does NOT work. The service was great, as usual. Honestly I feel for the staff having to field the steady barrage of complaints and spin the changes as a positive thing. The changes are decidedly negative. I really hope they reverse course. Until then, we won't be back :'( read more

5/5, really enjoyed both of my visits here! I love the casual, airy atmosphere that's welcoming and very simple. Always bonus points too for a live wall of plants :) I got a lemonade/black tea and was able to adjust the sweetness! I appreciate that it's not pre-mixed. For food, we got the Nuremberger on a bun with sauerkraut and onions and an all beef sausage Bavarian style with red cabbage and warm potato salad. Rosamunde did not disappoint! My only regret is not getting more food. Next time I'm definitely getting the pretzels with cheese and currywurst! read more

I've stopped by Willkommen once for a beer and have been meaning to come back to try the food. Willkommen has both indoor and outdoor seating. Outdoor seating is super popular on sunny days, but the indoor seating is spaced out and the venue has such high ceilings that makes it very spacious indoors. They have COVID-19 precautions in place including sanitation and proof of vaccination. Staff is attentive, nice, and fast. I ordered the Hella Sexy 32oz along with the Schnitzel Sandwich. I also got to try a Stout (forgot the name). The Hella Sexy was refreshing! The Stout was very good too. The Schnitzel Sandwich was delicious! Loved the flavors, appreciated the quality. Definitely makes me curious to try the other items on the menu. Overall, great experience. Looking forward to my next visit! read more

We stumbled upon Willkommen on a Sunday afternoon walk around Castro. Wow, this place was perfect for a light lunch after a bit of exercise. You order at the counter, and the staff are super friendly and efficient. We only had to wait a minute or two. There are also menus posted everywhere - a huge one on the wall, small ones at eye level, one by the door. It was very easy to select what we wanted. When we picked a table, we found there were QR codes, so you could also order directly from your phone to your table, if you wanted. Food was delicious! Highly suggest the potato salad. It comes warm, and delicious! For sausages, first you pick a style - we went with SF style, with grilled onions and sauerkraut. Then you pic the sausage - I don't know if you could go wrong with any of the sausages. The guava cider was delicious and something I'd never had before. Last thing I want to mention is the ambience. Very nice interior design. They did a great job creating an open space, that felt lively, without being loud. Two-story windows let in tons of sunlight. And on nice days, there's ample outdoor seating, too. I saw lots of delicious looking items at other tables, like a plate of crispy fried schnitzel. My party of 2 was seated at our own picnic table; not sure if we'd have to share had it been busier. The tables were spaced well apart and the servers were properly wearing masks. Drinks: extensive selection of draft beers. I was able to sample the pumpkin sour but decided to skip an entire pour. Their Hazy IPA was great. My friend got a canned rose for $12 which was a good deal considering it's 12 ounces (about 2-3 glasses). Food: we ordered the pretzel sticks and salads with sausage. The pretzel sticks were nice and soft, warm, and salty. They came with a white melty cheese and a delicious grainy mustard. The salads were very large and interesting. I would have appreciated a little more mixing of the ingredients or a chopped cheese. I will definitely be back to try more sausages and sandwiches and will update! This is my new favorite place! I came in with family on a Friday night at 6:30. The KINDEST gentleman was at the register. He was super patient as this was our first time. He answered every question we had. As a vegan, I was worried they didn't have anything for me....THEY DID. Beyond Hot Sausage SF style! When we sat down they had an amazing playlist flowing through the speakers. When he brought our food he remembered who ordered what. He pointed us to some sauces they had at the condiment bar. I do not give very many five point reviews. But this restaurant definitely deserves it. The food was amazing. I had the chicken and black cherry wurst with sauerkraut. I asked for no grilled onions, and I'm glad I did. The sauerkraut together with there outstanding mustard could not be beat. I'm afraid onions would have ruined the experience. The fries were some of the best I've had. I am a french fry connoisseur. These fries were freshly cooked, ultra crispy and brown on the outside, and cooked to perfection on the inside. The dining room simply makes you happy. It's bright with large windows, and it's filled with greenery. I'm not a beer drinker, but I think you would classify this as a beer garden. my only negative turned into a positive at the end of my meal. They didn't have any diet Coke. I ended up drinking black tea at 9:42 pm. That wasn't my plan. But the manager came over and asked me how my meal was, and he apologized for not having diet Coke. He said getting soft drinks was one of their top priorities. he promised the situation would be resolved soon. This place is an example of a well-run operation. Was really excited to try Wilkommen. We did have quite a long wait (over an hour) so I would recommend making a reservation before you come. The sausages were all super flavourful and unique. The potatoes and cabbage with the Bavarian really made for a good meal. I was a little disappointed by the potato pancakes. Love the no hassle ordering vibe so you're not beholden to harried waitstaff to take your order and then can just up and leave when you're done. Food is pretty solid for a beer hall. Pretzel Sticks w/ Beer Cheese: This is the perfect snack for me. I love pretzels and I love melty dipping cheese. Their pretzel sticks solves the issue of having to unwind twisted pretzels to get pieces suitable for dipping. Plus it had more surface area with that nice malted brown area since there were no overlapping intersections. The cheese was way better that orange movie theater crap. It definitely tasted like beer was in there but also had a nice funky cheese aroma, making it seem more complex than simple cheddar. Berliner w/ Weisswurst & Slovenian Klobase: Reminded me a bit of salchipapas. The combination of fries and sausage slices and curried ketchup was a lot of fun, albeit quite rich. The weisswurst looked cool since it was so pale, but it was a tad bland. The Slovenian klobase, however, had a lot of nice smoky personality. read more
