We ordered the tasting menu with wine pairings to celebrate our anniversary. The service was excellent and the food was good, but it felt a bit like someone was trying to replicate "fine dining" without actually being fine dining. Don't get me wrong, the food was very good, but the presentation often felt like it was trying too hard for what it was. We were surprised that for having dress code there were a lot of people in jeans and shorts, making the experience feel less than actual fine dining.

From the moment we arrived, the service was impeccable--Lawrence, our server, was wonderfully attentive and made us feel so welcomed. We started with the brioche pull-apart bread and jumbo shrimp cocktail--both fresh and flavorful. The beetroot salad was an absolute standout--beautifully balanced and bursting with flavor. For entrees, I had the local lake trout, which was perfectly cooked and delicately seasoned. My husband declared the baked cod the best he's ever had, and my son devoured his chicken fricassée. Just when we thought it couldn't get any better, dessert arrived. The warm apple strudel and the Grand Pecan Ball were both over the top--a sweet, satisfying end to an exceptional meal. Take your time, relax, and savor every bite. The Woods is without a doubt a must-have dinner spot when visiting Mackinac Island.

This was my first time staying at the Grand Hotel and I was excited for the meals in the dining…read moreroom. The required dress code makes it an elevated experience, and the staff are all so attentive and on top of things. We opted for the dining package that includes breakfast and dinner, so we enjoyed several meals here. Each night features a different menu for the dinner: red, green, or yellow. The dinners are five courses and you are encouraged to choose an item for each course, but you don't have to (many of the kids in our party only ordered appetizers and mains). On the first night, I had shrimp cocktail, French onion soup, herb-crusted prime rib, and the German chocolate cake. The prime rib was my favorite although it was a bit too salty. The second night I opted for the butter poached lobster roll, tuscan sausage and kale soup, little gem Caesar, crab crusted walleye, and the famous pecan ball for dessert. My favorite was the lobster roll - it was a small portion, but so delicious and the lobster was perfectly cooked. Overall, the dinner food was all good to very good. Seasoned pretty well, cooked nicely, and super impressive with the mass quantities of food that they put out every single day. The dinners took two hours, but I never felt that the pacing was off and things moved along well. We also dined here for breakfast twice - they have a breakfast buffet as well as an a la carte menu which is included. I enjoyed the egg white bowl for breakfast one morning, and then the buffet the next day. I do wish there were some kind of vegetables/veggie dishes on the breakfast buffet but that's just me.

Once you start seeing the British Landing signs, you know that you are close to a treat and food refuel. This area on your stop is worth it. There is a small nature area that has bathrooms indoor. Nice views of the water and areas of history to read about. Ton of places to park your bike. Cannonball serves class American comfort foods such as fries, hamburgers, pretzels, corndogs, ice cream, and even fried pickles. My go-to is a corndog and fried pickles - biking 8 miles works up an appetite. Always been happy with my food. There is an order window to the right and pick-up window to the left. Staff are friendly and helpful. The time of waiting in line to getting food is efficient. Is it a little pricey? Of course, again, it is the only place to get food on that side of the Island. To the left and right of the Cannonball has a ton of picnic benches. Must-stop on your journey!

The pimento cheese bake app was really rich. Could feed a group of 6! The rib burger was one of the best thing we had the whole trip! The ahi tuna salad is a pass. But after a day of stress, our experience was very nice and relaxing, in comparison. Our server was probably the best part of the meal: He was attentive but not too much so. I felt like I needed some red meat, so it was the steak frites for me. The fries were good and the steak was good, too. I probably have steak like once a year, so I'm not the best person to tell you whether a steak is good or not. But I dug it. They have a kids menu here, with kid favorites like hot dogs, cheeseburger and chicken tenders. Since we were on an island and feeling fancy, we got the kids Shirley Temples, which was their first time having that beverage. I got wine. In the summer, they open up the doors and all the fresh lake air blows into the restaurant, and it's nice. They also have patio seating, too, if you want to sit outside.

Apparently, they have rifle and cannon firing demonstrations here, which are scheduled, so if you want to see one while you're visiting the fort, make sure to meet at the allotted time. This is a living history museum, and you'll learn a lot about American and British military history. I mean, you probably will, because you'll read the signs and information that's posted. I mostly looked around and admired the architecture and the view, and took photos of pretty or interesting things that I saw. So from my perspective, Fort Mackinac is a cool and visually interesting place to spend an hour or two. You are basically walking into and out of different houses and structures on what used to be a military outpost. Each building has something new to learn about military life, with exhibits that appeal to all ages. I was surprised by how many interactive and hands-on exhibits there were for kids. Keep in mind that some of the buildings are very airy, so if you visit on a cold day, it might be a little chilly. Plus, you're walking in and out a lot, so if you visit during the fall like I did, you might need a jacket. The gift shop is pretty big, with lots of souvenirs to remember your visit not just of Fort Mackinac, but Mackinac Island, as well.

Plus, your admission ticket includes all the other nearby exhibits.
