The French Outpost is a decent dinner and drinks spot on the Island. In the summer of 2005, I spent…read morea couple of nights hanging out here after dinner, drinking it up and enjoying their raspberry-infused vodka. The real kind! Not that store-bought crap! A fun place with a big deck. The renovation a few years back really paid off--used to be a bit of a rustic lodge. They went upscale with the renovation and it really paid off.

First off, "The French Outpost" was bought by the Grand Hotel and is now called "The Gatehouse." This was my family's experience from last summer. First: We waited, no joke, twenty minutes for our drinks. Next: Our drink orders were messed up by the waitress... who turned out to be incredibly slow and completely inept... FYI I am VERY patient w/ servers as I have several years of serving experience. Next: We waited, again no joke, an HOUR AND A HALF for our food. Next: Not a single person who ordered meat received the correct temperature. Everything was overcooked. Two people (out of six) very politely, sent their meat entrees back for correction... my uncle switched his filet for a burger, which also was served incredibly overdone. My sister sent her overdone filet back and when it returned, it was a bloody mess. Next: When we spoke with the manager, he informed us that there was a history of problems with our waitress and we were certainly not the first to complain. He also told us that the kitchen had been "off" all night on the meat temperatures. No attempt was made at appeasing us, which was disappointing. We weren't trying to get a free meal or a big discount... it was the gesture that mattered to us. One free dessert for the ten of us to share would've made everyone happy, but all we got was reassurance that everyone else in the restaurant was suffering too. What the heck? In theory, the patio would be a nice place to sit on a sunny day and have some drinks... but out of principle, I I will never, ever go back to the Gatehouse. Instead you'll find me on the patios of The Pink Pony, Mary's Bistro, and The Icehouse!

I had to look at my photos in order to remember our meal. That's not to say it was bad. Not at all! Just that the only thing I remember is that the prices are slightly higher than I think they should be. (Although, that seems to be the case at every restaurant on Mackinac Island. They have you trapped, and they know it.) We started with the smoked whitefish dip, which is a popular thing in this part of Michigan. It came piping hot with melted cheese on it, and served with crispy pita chips and crostini. I'm glad I tried it! I love me a good meatloaf sandwich, so when I saw meatloaf sliders in the menu, I had to get them. These sliders are made with pretzel buns, which are not my favorite because I feel like they're never soft enough. A nice white bun would have been so much better. I got a side Caesar salad, and it was fine. We also ordered a chicken tenders basket, the Low Carb Platter (just a cheeseburger without a bun and a side of cottage cheese), and a kids' cheeseburger. They do have a kids menu here -- just ask. Millie's gets very busy! We had to wait almost 30 minutes for a table. But it's centrally located in the middle of downtown Mackinac, so I wouldn't expect anything less.

I was worried there would be a long wait, as it's a small spot, but Nate and I could grab a seat at the bar right away for a late lunch. The bartender was super friendly and we enjoyed chatting with her. I got a featured sangria with pear vodka which was delicious and refreshing. Their taps were out of order, but they have plenty of canned and bottled options. The fish and chips came with two large filets and plenty of fries. I even liked the coleslaw, which I normally don't really love. The batter was a bit thick for my taste but the fish was flaky and not dry. Nate got the waldorf salad, which was huge and had tons of toppings and a nice portion of grilled chicken. The space is quite small so I don't think this place would be great if you have a stroller or anyone in a wheelchair. I'm glad we checked it out and would come back - some of the other dishes I saw coming out of the kitchen looked great, like the fried mac and cheese and the Reuben!

The gravy is hot, the biscuits are soft, and if you get it with an egg on top, they're even better. But biscuits and gravy are just one of the items you'll find on the breakfast menu here. (They serve breakfast all day.) Of course, they have pancakes: buttermilk pancakes, blueberry pancakes, chocolate chip pancakes, and even red velvet pancakes. We got an order of the buttermilk pancakes, which are a la carte, and then you can add on an egg or bacon or sausage for an additional fee. We got bacon on the side. Another sweet thing we got for our breakfast: a cinnamon roll, which was large and perfectly swirled. Apparently, it had the perfect amount of icing on it. I got the mushroom and Swiss omelet, which was not my favorite. Swiss cheese has such a mild flavor, as do eggs, and mushrooms have zero taste unless you add something to make them soak up that flavor, so this omelet tasted like ... butter? Or whatever they used to grease the pan. I had to add a lot of Cholula hot sauce to my omelet just to taste something. And I don't even particularly like Cholula. Omelets come with your choice of toast. The coffee was great, though, and was replenished quickly. The service was super quick, too. You can tell that these guys are used to dealing with a crush of people during the busy season, because everyone was very efficient. Pancake House also shares the same location as Ryba's Fudge Shop. You're actually sitting and eating breakfast in a fudge shop. (Or maybe people are buying fudge from a breakfast joint. Same-same.)

To be fair, since it's on Mackinac Island, you're going to travel an hour just to get here anyway. But yeah, if I lived anywhere in the area I'd plan a night around coming here. The three things I look for in a brewery are an inviting outdoor space, accessibility to some good grub, and (of course) some quality beers. Big bonus if a place is dog friendly. Great Turtle easily accomplishes all three. Our waitress was great - they were fairly busy but she was super friendly and made sure we were taken care of without being up-in-your-face. The lunches we enjoyed were tasty and filling. We actually came here twice on the same day. The first time we got the 12-sample flight of all their beers. We then left for a walk around the town. After an hour of talking about Great Turtle we decided to go back for lunch and a pint of our favorite beer from the flight. Very rare for us to repeat a place, especially on the same day! Next time we venture into Northern Michigan I'll try to convince Mama to go back again, get a room nearby, and spend more time without the concern of driving later on. My rating scale: 1 - Just don't 2 - You'll survive, but there are better choices close by 3 - Good choice if you're in the area 4 - I'd drive 30 minutes out of my way just to come here 5 - I'd try to convince my wife to drive an hour just to come here
