My only criticism is that it's a single piece of toast, so at $16 it felt a bit pricey, even though the quality was outstanding. The tomato salad was another highlight. The tomatoes were fresh and flavorful, and the aioli brought everything together beautifully without overpowering the dish. Our favorite savory dish was the braised cabbage. It arrived as essentially half a cabbage--about the size of a brain--which made it a little awkward to eat. That said, the flavors more than made up for the presentation. The gochujang barbecue sauce was rich and slightly sweet with just the right amount of heat, and the roasted oyster mushrooms complemented the cabbage perfectly. Overall, Sombramesa delivered a fantastic meal with creative, high-quality food and excellent service. While a couple of dishes leaned toward the expensive side for their portion size, the quality of the ingredients and the execution made for a memorable experience. We'd happily return!

What really makes this place special, though is the owner. She is exceptionally friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable about the lines. We always feel genuinely welcomed when we walk through the door. I was honestly surprised and disappointed to see some of the recent negative comments because they don't reflect our experiences here at all. We dined later in the evening this time, and it was really special to see the staff, managers, and I believe even the owner all still there together. It felt less like coworkers and more like a family--which says a lot about a place. Food-wise, everything held up to our first visit (which is rare!). I couldn't resist and ordered the beef bourguignon again--still absolutely incredible. We also had escargot (note: it comes with béchamel unless you ask otherwise), and that amazing cassoulet loaded with different meats from the evening--it was spectacular. It didn't seem that busy so I'm not sure why reservations are required, but it's a really pretty space upstairs. It's a limited snack menu and they do have nice drinks, but my husband wanted a pour of bourbon and they really didn't have an extensive selection as far as that goes. It was more of craft cocktails mixed and some beers. The downstairs restaurant and bar looked really nice so we'll probably just check that out next time instead for more selection of bourbon and food.

On my last visit: a friend's band was playing and bestie wanted to go so one last shot. I ordered the whipped goat cheese and pepper jelly bc I figured it didn't need any cooking so it would be fine, and it was! But I asked for baguette instead of a corn waffle and got the latter. When I reminded her that I asked for a baguette I got an eye roll, heavy sigh, and didn't see her again until about 30 minutes later when she silently and without eye contact dropped the check on her way to another table without even breaking stride. I was going to order another drink for the end of the set! But whatever, all for the best. Thank goodness I had cash so I didn't have to wait another hour for her to run my card. Never again. Too many great options close by...where the same local bands also play.
