I respectfully told him that businesses are not allowed to require documentation for a service dog. His response was, "How am I supposed to know it's a service dog?" At that point, I ended up showing my personal medical paperwork, something I should never have felt pressured to do. I also explained that as a business owner, he should know the laws regarding service animals. We decided to leave without eating because the entire experience made us feel unwelcome, embarrassed, and we completely lost our appetite. I hope this serves as a reminder that businesses should educate themselves about the rights of people with disabilities and the laws protecting service dog handlers. No one should have to disclose private medical information just to be treated with respect.
