I highly recommend you stay away from this company. We spent several thousands of dollars having our chimney overhauled 2 years ago. We started having smoke back up so we wanted someone to come and look at it. we could not find the receipt for the company that had done the previous work, so we called Winstons. It took 5 days for them to be able to come. Once here, they "diagnosed" major problems, and they were issues that had been done just two years ago (broken damper, deteriorating crown, etc). With that, we seached the house till we found the receipt from the company that did the work previously. we called them and they came IMMEDIATELY. what was wrong? The chimney needed swept. and the killer is - Winstons quoted $249 for that. This company swept it for $129. Chimney is perfect, and we have a wonderful roaring fire going. Not to mention, they did inspect all issues that Winstons cited (without us tellling them of that diagnosis) and put in writing that all was good and in working order with their guarantee. I have used Winstons since I moved here 4-5 years ago. I have never had a problem with them. I had received a coupon in the mail saying if I had the chimney cleaned before 30 Sep it would be $179 and after, $229. I called towards the end of Sep to make an appointment and Mr. Hall said even though it would be past the end of Sep I would still get the coupon price. I got a four hour window, They arrived about one hour into the window. Once again my technician was Lenny. He has been the primary tech since I moved here. He has always been super -- professional, knowledgeable, careful with my property and personable. Lenny and his assistant set to work. I wanted the chimney cleaned since we had the earthquake and it had not been cleaned since 2000 though it had been inspected. They cleaned it, used the "chimney cam" to inspect it. Found some cracks near the collar. He was very thorough in explaining the work performed, the damage he found and made several recommendations as to how to repair it. As a tenant I do not make the decisions so it wb passed to the landlord. It was a positive experience, I am very satisfied with their work and would recommend them! read more

Chimney technicians Daniel Calderon and Oscar repaired our home's chimney, specifically installing a new chimney sleeve while also correcting a potentially dangerous situation involving the venting of our furnace's exhaust. In addition to making our home safer and improving the operational efficiency of our furnace, Mr. Calderon and Oscar treated our residence as if it were their own homes. As part of the installation, Mr. Calderon had to remove part of the wall paneling and trim. After the install Mr. Calderon did his best to replace the cut pieces and re-align them so that I could repair and paint them, instead of merely leaving the pieces on the floor for me to deal with on my own. Additionally, a few days after the install, I had a couple of questions that I had forgotten to ask Mr. Calderon. After contacting the office, Mr. Calderon promptly returned my call and fielded my questions. This is our third time having Winston's Chimney Service address chimney issues. Excellent work by Fernando. We called for chimney cleaning and he advised us that we should add a stainless steel flue liner for our gas furnace in our masonry chimney . We looked at csia.org noted that Fernando is highly qualified. After some research and conversation elsewhere, installing a flue liner seemed like a sound proposal, so we had Fernando install one. The Winston crews relined my chimney and fixed the top of the chimneys' brick etc last July. It was quite expensive and I, of course, have no way of knowing whether that much work was necessary. The people seemed professional and honest so I believed them. I write this review now because only now have I had a fire and so know whether things work properly. They do. The work itself was done on time as promised and efficiently. The chief of the crew, Mr. Daniel Lopez, set the standard in professionalism for the job. Then, when I had trouble operating the flu due to a stiff spring, the mechanism was replaced with a lever that I could operate more easily at no extra cost. I hope I never have to have further work done on my fireplaces or chimneys. But if I do, I will call Winston and ask for Mr. Lopez. read more

I am giving Winston Chimney a zero star rating. The only reason one star is selected is because Yelp insists I pick one. My husband and I were planning to attend a wedding together for a close friend which required far distance driving. when my husband finally got a return call from Winston they scheduled him for the exact date of the friends wedding, because of the crack in our chimney and the weather getting colder, we decided he needed to be there to get that fixed and I would attend the wedding alone. Not ideal, but we felt one of should represent. So, I leave after a long day at work on a Friday to drive 6 hours alone!!! My husband called me the morning of the wedding to tell me Winston canceled, last minute! The reason.... "scheduling" wtf!!! You clearly knew he was on the schedule for 6 weeks!!! And you waited! So now he could have come with me and Winston wasted his time and took way our time together to celebrate friends nuptials. NEVER AGAIN WINSTON! YOU OWE ME TIME! read more

Their team arrives on time when scheduled and protects the interior of the rooms from dirt and dust from the work. Winston's installed a new flue in each chimney; after the new flue was installed we no longer experience smoke infiltration into the house. I had two scheduled appointments for an inspection & cleaning and no one showed up for either appointment. After calling Winston's for more information, they could not provide an explanation as to why no one showed up for the first appointment and they claimed that someone did show up for the second appointment, but no one was home at the house or answered the phone. The second explanation doesn't add up, considering I was at home the entire day, waiting for them to show up, and I have no record of missed calls from the company. Very poor customer service, in my opinion, considering they missed two appointments and made no effort to reconcile with the customer, given the circumstances. read more

After doing research online, I called Winston's and scheduled an appointment for our rental and our home chimneys to be inspected. Both of the technicians, Sam and Jeff, were polite, professional, and a pleasure to work with. Ryan, Daniel, and Jonathan removed and replaced a defective 30 year old pre-fab fireplace for me this week. This included installing new pipe in a forty foot high chimney as I am in a condo on the lowest level of a 4 story building. Unfortunately, I didn't get the names of the young men that did the finish work - - including removing the existing slate around the fireplace and the mantel - - and replacing them after the installation. All of these men were on-time, courteous, and professional every step of the way. They also were very sure to make sure that there was no dirt or dust on ANYTHING in my condo during and after the job. They all went above and beyond in making sure that I was happy with their work. What a great company! They schedule appointments with a 2-hour window which means you aren't sitting around for hours waiting and hoping for the technician to appear. Lenny and Darryl are the best! I want them cleaning my chimney every year! They arrived on time, were cheerful, thoughtful, and explained everything as they went along. The cleaning was more thorough than I've witness in my home before and included a camera inspection. They even went up on the roof to check the chimney cap and vent. In spite of the review written on 9/12/2011, I decided to still give Winston's a try. When I first called I left a voice mail message for someone to contact me. They responded the next day which was great. I returned the persons call and was able to schedule an appointment in two days. My husband took off work to meet the works for a Chimney Inspection and Sweeping. About 30 minutes after two hour window when the workers were supposed to show up, my husband called the office and was told that somehow they forgot to send someone to our house and the next appointment would be in two weeks. THEY FORGOT! A manager was supposed to call us to discuss this mishap (our customer service experience) and future appointment but we never received a call. Now I know that waiting an additional two weeks for another possible mistake was out of the question. How does a company 1) schedule you for an appointment and then forget and 2) promise a return phone call and then don't follow through with that either. We ended up contacting another company and received an appointment two days later. The workers came out on time, at the start of their estimated time, and did an excellent job. If you try Winston's then I hope you have a better experience. read more

We have been using Winston's for cleanings of our chimney for years. On the last cleaning Jeff called our chimney "unsafe" and a few days later we received via email a proposal with pictures showing the problems with our chimney. When the proposal was approved and I called the company to schedule the work, they were quick to give us the first possible dates. Three guys showed up on Columbus day for a full day of work. They came back the following Friday and in one day managed to get our chimney back in shape. The team included Elmer, Ever and Oslim all three from El Salvador. The professionalism and courtesy exhibited by these guys was amazing. They explained what they found every step of the way and provided evidence of how badly our chimney needed work. I highly recommend this company! Lenny and his helper were fantastic to work with. They came out twice, once for the initial inspection and estimate, the second time for the actual work. Both times they were happy, respectful, considerate, and friendly. They explained everything they saw, provided pictures of the inside of our chimney, and answered all our questions. They made suggestions that were helpful and were not pushy. They provided options for immediate work and let us know what could wait until a later date. Today, during the repair, my children all sat on the couch and watched them work. Both men interacted wonderfully with the kids and explained what they were doing. They even laughed at my three year old's jokes. I felt completely comfortable having them in my home and around my family. We will definitely be calling them again. read more

We have an old house, and I'm finding that companies fall into two groups: those that charge more than they bid and deliver less, and those that stick to the bid and make an extra effort to do the best possible job. Winston's is a shining example of that second category. Fernando and his assistant relined our chimney, as expected, but they also repointed some bricks and replaced aging ductwork. Did I mention the vacuuming and their eagerness to return all the living room furniture to its place? And the email reminder a day or two in advance of each visit? I have used Winston's for a couple of years now, and my impression is that their service can be uneven. My recent service call went well--I had the chimney inspected, and was told it needed to be swept, which he did for $179. He asked when was the last time I had someone look at it, and couldn't believe it was just last year. When he asked who did it and I said Winston's, he shook his head. I got the impression the guy who came last year should have swept the chimney, but that guy said it was all clean. It's hard to tell which one of them is doing a good job--someone who said I didn't need the chimney swept because it was clean, or someone who said I did! The second guy showed me a pile of soot, however, so I think it needed to be swept this year in any case. Both showed me photos of cracks in the crown, which looks pretty serious. I plan on having Winston's replace the crown. Second guy suggests waterproofing, too. So, overall, I plan to continue using Winston's since they are certified and get good reviews, but I can't give them five stars because their service is uneven/ hit or miss. read more

I have had three poor experiences with this company. They are unreliable. It shouldn't take 7 - 12 weeks to have gutters cleaned. I would call and ask if they were coming and they would say they would be there at the end of the week and they would not show up. I think they aren't interested in cleaning gutters at all but they advertise that gutter cleaning is part of their business. My quote in June 2015 was $170 and they showed up at the end of August 2015 and my recent quote was for $300 and they never showed up. I wish they had just said they weren't interested because I could have had it done by now. I called two other companies who quoted far less than $300 and I am choosing one who is coming next Tuesday. read more

Winston's Chimney service came to repair a damper on my chimney. The person that came in was very rude and unprofessional. He knocked at the door and when I answered he didn't announce who he was, the only reason I knew was because of the name on the truck. He walked in went to the chimney and then walked back out the door without saying a word, all the while leaving my front door wide open. He took the old damper out, he didn't use anything to cover the floor dropping dirt all the way out through the front door. He then proceeded to put together, what I later figured out was the damper at the end of my drive way and then proceeded to pull out a ladder to go to the roof of the house. He then came back in all the while tracking mud and dirt from my yard onto my carpet to finish installing the equipment. Never explaining to me or my brother in-law what was being done. My brother in-law finally said "can you explain to us what you are doing" he then stated "I'm installing a damper..." He laid his dirt tools on my white carpet staining them without apology. He then showed us how to use the damper and gathered his items to leave. I asked him can we use the fireplace? He stated "No it's unsafe to use". I was perplexed then, I stated I don't understand, he then looked at us and exhaled loudly, I guess for some reason we were bothering him, I not sure, he then went on to explain to us why we couldn't use the fireplace. When he finished I asked for an estimate and he then stated that I had 22 ft. fireplace and and it would cost $150.00 per foot to fix. I asked him if he could provide me with a written estimate to show my husband and he told me to multiply 22 times 150 and then I would have my estimate, all while he was walking toward the front door, still tracking dirt mind you. When he got to the door I asked him was he done, he stated yes and walked out the door leaving the door open again. I was completely shock!!!! We are first time home buyers, and use the internet to hire companies for most of the repairs we need done. Even though this company was hired by the selling realtor to complete the work I thought the guy was completely unprofessional and I will never use this company or recommend this company to anyone, EVER!!!!!!! My experience with Winston Chimney was excellent. Jeff worked to explain how to best rework my 1940s chimney to make it safe and reliable. He even reworked my old damper because I wanted to keep the old school charm of the original fireplace surround. Winston ended up installing heat shield in our chimney which was a easy process. They conducted a vent inspection and chimney sweep for me recently. They did a great job. They were here right when the service window started. We have never had our dryer vents checked or cleaned since we bought our home, and I wasn't sure what to expect. Turns out our vent was clean and good to go, so they didn't charge us for vent services. We really appreciated their fairness and not being "nickel and dimed." The chimney cleaning was also done well. They explained everything to me and what their standards are. While the price of cleaning a chimney is a bit steep, I think that is normal for the service, especially in the northern Virginia area. They did a great job and I will remember them for future chimney/vent services. read more
