This is a review for the Spa Salon at Wintergreen Resort.
While I have skied at Wintergreen before, I had never had the occasion to go to the Spa at the Aquatic and Fitness Center until this past weekend. I was a bridesmaid in a wedding, and the bride had made reservations for me as well as another bridesmaid to get a shampoo and blowout at noon the day of the wedding. The bride and three other bridesmaids were going to the salon earlier for styling--MORE than just a blowout. The reservations were made about a month before the wedding. She was told at the time of the booking that it would cost us $40. I thought that was expensive, but was willing to suck it up for a wedding and wanted my hair to have the extra oomph it gets when an experienced stylist does a blowout, rather than having to do it myself.
We arrived about 5 minutes late since the direction signs leave out the AFC once you past the first turn. However, I was promptly attended to. There were a number of employees there, but only 2 women doing hair (the rest seemed to be doing nail appointments). The other woman doing hair was still working on a different bridesmaid who had come earlier and was having her hair curled. The woman doing my hair looked at my messy ponytail and asked if I had already been shampooed and blow dried and what style I would like. I explained that I was there for a shampoo and blow dry. She then did, admittedly, give me a relaxing head massage during my shampoo. However, my relaxation ended when she said she was unfamiliar with the salon's product as she was selecting what to use on my hair. She explained that she was just there that day to help. So I realized she didn't actually work there. It became abundantly clear as she was drying my hair that she did not know what a blowout was, and had probably never given one before. When she was done drying my hair, it was just frizzy and hanging there, nothing like when my regular stylist does it after a haircut. She asked me how I got my ends smooth. Hoping to salvage my hair for the wedding, I explained that I would use a big 3 inch curling iron at home or a straightening iron, and then flip it out with one of those. So she chose to use a 1 inch barrel curling iron and curled my ends under. It looked awful. I already knew I would have to redo.
Meanwhile, the other bridesmaid who had an appointment for a blowout at noon had not yet been attended to. The woman who did my hair did her next. The other woman doing hair had finished the other bridesmaid, but then moved on to give a pedicure and not do the other bridesmaid's hair. The woman doing our hair asked the other bridesmaid what she should do with her hair--she seemed very unsure of what to do with unclean, straight hair of someone who was there for a blowout. She ended up doing the same thing as she did to mine, but finishing it with a straightening iron.
During that appointment, I was sitting and waiting and another woman came in who had a hair appointment at 1pm. No one was available to do her hair at that time, so I guess she had complained to an employee. The employee asked the other bridesmaid when we had to be done. The bridesmaid told her we had our next wedding event, pictures, at 2:30, but needed to eat lunch, get dressed, and do makeup before then. The employee suggested that she step aside so that the other woman could have her hair done since "we didn't need to be anywhere until 2:30." The employee also told the other woman that we were late, so that it was our fault that her hair wasn't being done on time. We EACH had an appointment at noon, so it was actually the salon's fault for not doing both of our appointments at noon, even if we were 5 minutes late. In addition, she neglected the fact that we had other things to do before 2:30, and thought we would be done by 1, which would have given us plenty of time to eat and get ready before the wedding festivities.
It gets worse. After the disappointing hair styling and rude treatment, the employees at the front desk attempted to overcharge us. The other bridesmaid paid first and was told her total was $65 which included an 18% gratuity. She was so annoyed that she didn't argue, and walked out the door, just to get out of there. Next, the employee told me my total was $90! I was shocked and asked why mine was so much more, since I had the same styling as the other bridesmaid who was charged $65. The employee told me I had special occasion hair. I explained that no, I just had a shampoo and blow dry, and that we had not booked the hair appointments as a wedding party or as special occasion hair. It took them about 10 minutes, 4 employees, and the manager, but they were some how able to figure out my total was $47.50--$40 plus the forced 18% gratuity. Then the other bridesmaid came back in to have her total adjusted as well.
Extremely poor hair service and customer service. A warning to all area brides! read more
